Valentine’s Day naturally brings thoughts of hearts, flowers, sweetness and love. But did you know that it also falls during American Heart Month? A perfecttime to start taking care of your heart and the heartsof the ones you love.

You might think that a heart-healthy diet is boring or flavorless.Actually, eating for your heart can add a lot of flavor, and some of it may come from surprising sources — such as watermelon.

Eating watermelon can help maintain cardiovascular health. That’sbecause the amino acid called citrulline in watermelon increasesfree arginine which helps maintain blood flow, the arteries, andoverall cardiovascular function.

Hollywood Beach resident Bob “Bikebob” Lieberman likes creating smiles — first as a toy company executive and most recently as the founder of Bikes 4 Kids, a volunteer organization that collects, fixes and redistributes used bicycles.

Lieberman, 58, served as the unofficial “Creator of Smiles” for Matchbox Toys before becoming a business life coach through his marketing company, It’s a Shore Thing, which assists professionals who want to grow their businesses. An avid bike rider and environmentalist, Lieberman launched Bike 4 Kids last September and has since delivered nearly 200 bicycles to wheel-less children and homeless adults.

Dozens of volunteers help out by putting up posters in storefront windows and handing out business cards. Collectively, they are known as Bikebob & Friends. It’s a simple premise: People call Lieberman to pick up their unwanted or unneeded bicycles, which ultimately get a “second life” with a new owner. Bikes needing repairs are delivered to the Bicycle Spot in Oakland Park, which does all the work for free.

But the vast majority of donated bikes are in good, even “pristine,” condition, according to Lieberman, who has collected bicycles valued as high as $400.

“They need a little air in the tires, need cleaning, a little TLC,” he said.

The idea for the donation program “grew out of a green interest,” said Lieberman, a member of Hollywood’s Green Team Advisory Committee for the past two years. Bikes 4 Kids’ first bicycle recipient was a 14-year-old local boy, the son of an unemployed single mother, who wanted to ride with Bikebob & Friends in the annual Candy Cane Parade on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk in December but didn’t own a bike.

“I gave him my $1,000 mountain bike, I gave him a helmet and I gave him a lock,” said Lieberman. “That was bike one, by me.”

Since then, Bikes 4 Kids has distributed “second-life” bikes not only to children but also to some homeless adults through the Jubilee Center in Hollywood. Some recipients are referred through organizations that assist the needy, while others call Lieberman after seeing one of his posters.

On one particular occasion, Lieberman delivered bicycles to four siblings.

“The looks on their faces — it was like we gave them cars,” he said. “I felt like Oprah.”

Bikes 4 Kids is for all kids — not just the disadvantaged.

“If a child asks for a bike, I don’t care who they are, they get one,” Lieberman said. “So it’s not just based on need; it’s based on want.”

To raise awareness for Bikes 4 Kids and celebrate Hollywood’s eco-friendly attitude, Lieberman has organized Hollywood Bike Day from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 20. The fourth annual informal gathering of bicycle enthusiasts will feature a bike parade along the Broadwalk, beginning at the south end near the Summit Towers Condos and ending at North Beach Park at Sheridan Street. Anyone is welcome to join the leisurely paced procession at any point along the route. Riders should wear a helmet and bring drinking water, sunscreen and “a smile or two,” Lieberman said. The slogan for the day, “Forever Young,” not only refers to the youthful exuberance experienced by bike riders of all ages but also recognizes Hollywood and founder Joseph Young, who purchased the first parcel of land that would evolve into the present-day city back in February 1921.

Not coincidently, February is also

Heart Healthy Month. In addition to the “empowerment to be free” that Bikes 4 Kids gives children in the community, Lieberman said he volunteers his time

to the project because he knows firsthand the healthy benefits of regular bike riding.

“I was very ill. The bicycle helped me recoup in saving my life,” he recalled.

These days, “Bikebob” can be seen in his yellow Bikes 4 Kids T-shirt pedaling along the Broadwalk, where he logs 10 to 15 miles a day, and spreading the word about Bikes 4 Kids and Hollywood along the way.

“Some people call me the Mayor of Hollywood Beach,” Lieberman said.

And like a true ambassador, the Brooklyn-born “Creator of Smiles” is inspiring other people in cities across the country to start their own Bikes 4 Kids program. He also has plans to organize an annual Bike Day in area elementary, middle and high schools that would allow older students to swap bicycles they’ve outgrown for bigger rides and pass along their too-small wheels to the younger children.

“It’s really grassroots. It’s little by little,” Lieberman said.

For more information on the Hollywood Beach Bike Parade or to donate or receive a bicycle, call Lieberman at 954-593-8501 or e-mail him at [email protected].

The City of Hollywood recognized eight Nativity Catholic School eighth-grade students at the Jan. 5 City Commission meeting for their participation in the Teen Council Interview Exercise.

In December, 72 students in Lynne Moore’s Grammar and Composition classes began a business writing unit by creating their resumes. They then wrote cover letters to Mayor Peter Bober and applied for a position on the Hollywood Teen Council, a group they thought was fictitious. However, a similar group exists. The City implemented the Youth Council Network to enlist feedback from the youth of the community on issues they see as

important and want the City to address. And while they were not actually applying to the position, Hollywood City Manager Cameron Benson still visited Nativity School to interview eight students with particularly well-crafted resumes and cover letters and to hear about issues they wanted Hollywood to look into.

“This assignment was part of a life skills writing assignment designed to teach the students about the importance of writing and interviewing skills,” Moore said. “The unit ran the gamut of the interview experience, while students constructed resumes they can build on for high school and beyond. The students really enjoyed this, and now so many students want to be a part of the Youth Council.”

Eight students – Kristoff Beauzil, Siena Benson, Nicholas Crawford, Jenna Herrera, Molly Matis, Gabriella Salemi, Marco Turturro and Julian Wood – dressed up in business attire and performed one-on-one mock-interviews with City Manager Benson in front of their entire class. Moore said that after City Manager Benson interviewed each student, he offered constructive criticism about his or her performance, and the rest of the class did as well. They evaluated each student’s performance on a scale of 1 to 5, basing the score on eye contact, responses, voice and enthusiasm.

“These students put a lot of hard work into this assignment,” City Manager Benson said. “I have to say, some of the

resumes and cover letters I received were better than some of the ones I receive from professionals.”

He added that after visiting Nativity, he wanted to include younger students in the Youth Council. High school students currently participate in the program, but after hearing the things these students said during the interviews, City Manager Benson thinks reaching out to middle school students will greatly benefit the City, too.

“We want to have an open process for everyone to give us the information on what they want done in the City,” he said. “I think we need to hear from younger people. This will be their community in the future, and they’re the future leaders of the City. They need to know what’s going on in the city government and actively participate in it.”

After the interview, students wrote letters thanking City Manager Benson for his time – just like they would after an

actual interview – and Mayor Bober and City Manager Benson presented the eight students interviewed with certificates at the City Commission meeting last month, commending them for their work on resume writing and interviewing skills.

“What was really nice was that all of the students could see the interviews going on,” Moore said. “Everyone learned a lot. I have about 30 students interviewing for jobs (in the near future) so this assignment was extremely important.”

For more information about the Youth Council Network, call Leander Hamilton at 954-921-3471 or call Gail Reinfeld at 954-921-3218.

Welcome to a new column called “IN THE LOOP” that will balance satire and topical news stories from Hollywood and beyond.

Having worked in the media, both in Hollywood, California and Hollywood, Florida, I’m convinced there is no monopoly on fruits and nuts among the populous.

To get the scoop on your hometown or sound smart at a party, just read my column every month.

PEOPLE & POLITICSTo start with my observations, I

recently attended a buffet breakfast sponsored by the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The keynote speaker was Mayor Peter Bober who gave the annual “State of the City” address. Throughout his speech, the Mayor spoke about the challenging economic times for Hollywood’s 143,000 residents.

Another issue the Mayor discussed was SR 441, in which he advocated infrastructure improvement. “The City Commission has worked to encourage property owners to form a

civic association,” he said. “There are many steps that need to be taken in the revitalization of SR 441.”

Have you seen those pawn shops on this commercial thoroughfare? I’ve hit buzzers on several locked iron doors just to get inside these unctuous businesses. The salesmen resemble Ted Nugent; it’s a shopping experience where one must have an attitude. Beautification might help to soften the image with daffodils or birds of paradise growing outside in brick planters.

Well its official – Hollywood has a “Red Light District!” I know what you’re thinking…streetwalkers and

traffic slowing down to have a look. However, that’s not the case. The City has joined the list of South Florida cities that have installed traffic cameras at key intersections to catch unsuspecting drivers who run red lights. Intended to curb traffic violations and promote motor safety, the City will also add new revenue to its coffers. This might help balance the budget. If you feel these cameras are controversial and believe Big Brother is expanding, heed the warning, and look at as another way

to get into the Hollywood film industry.

PLACESIf you’re searching for a place to

possibly shoot a scene for a movie, Hollywood has its own unique, movie-worthy hotspot. Have you been to the renowned Le Tub Saloon – a zany, outdoor, tropical hamburger place with porcelain bath tubs and toilets used as garden planters – on Hollywood Beach? The eatery has been around before the original “Miami Vice.”

And, when visiting Downtown Hollywood, come to expect a lively atmosphere as well. The international flavor of fine restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries will be especially busy Sunday, March 13 for the annual St. Patty’s Day Parade. And then on March 25 Downtown hosts Relay For Life at the ArtsPark on Young Circle. Participants have already raised

over $10K at press time. Call Lauren Welch to sign up today 954-200-7532. My prediction: this stretch of upbeat activity will be the next Las Olas Boulevard.

So you’ve visited the beach and Downtown Hollywood, but how many times have you driven along I-95 near Griffin Road and noticed that old fashioned wooden roller coaster on the eastside of the freeway? That is Boomers, and it is the only amusement park in our neck of the woods. Not since Pirates World has there been a place packed with more fun and excitement. For a $12 ticket, a rider gets four hours of unlimited rides on the roller coaster, and Boomers also has miniature golf, bowling, batting cages and go karts.

Exciting news! Hollywood has a new way to travel. You can now cruise to Hollywood’s hot spots by Water Taxi. An adult all day pass is only $20 (unlimited rides all day). Water you waiting for?!

And speaking being taken for a ride, what is going on at the Yellow Green Farmer’s Market on Taft Street? After all the red tape leading to it’s official opening, is it living up to all the initial hype? We’ll discuss that and much more next time - - - In the Loop.

Since the launching of the RecycleBank rewards program one year ago, the City of Hollywood has collected more than 6.8 million pounds of recyclable material, and residents have redeemed more than 16.5 million points at local, regional and national businesses, said Kee Eng, administrative services manager for the Public Works Department.

The benefits to Hollywood, Eng said, include saving the City money by avoiding landfill fees (it costs the City $98 to burn one ton of garbage), generating money since the City receives $58 per ton of recycled material and preserving the environment by reducing pollution from incinerations.

“The program has been extremely successful,” said Public Works Director Greg Turek. “It has removed a lot of tonnage from our waste stream.”

The program, which encourages residents to recycle by rewarding households with points for their efforts, has attracted around 15,000 residents to activate accounts with RecycleBank.

And although the City delivered more than 30,000, 95-gallon recycling containers to households last January, Eng said the residents who have not

activated accounts could still be recycling. Active participants receive points based on the amount they recycle – 2½ points per pound of recyclables – and they can redeem these points for coupons at national retailers, such as Publix and CVS, and 45 local businesses, such as Sage Oyster Bar and Ocean Alley. Residents redeem their points at Publix more than any other business partner, Turek said.

Each container contains a personalized identification tag or RFID chip. Recycling trucks read this tag, record the weight and convey the number to RecycleBank, which converts the amount to points and credits the resident’s account.

Eng said they have encountered several problems with the identification tag, including tags coming loose or falling off, preventing the scanner from identifying the homeowner. He encourages residents to periodically check the tag, located on the front of the container, to ensure it remains in place. Anyone with a loose or missing tag should call the Public Works Department.

Currently, only single-family homes that are Hollywood Sanitation customers

can sign up for the RecycleBank program, but Eng said RecycleBank is developing ways to track recycling for multi-unit homes like apartments and condominiums. They City might implement this feature if it becomes available.

In addition to redeeming points at national, regional and local businesses, RecycleBank participants can also donate their points to two Hollywood schools: The Quest Center and Hollywood

Hills High School. RecycleBank offers environmental grants to schools in communities it services, but the caveat is the students need to earn points in a true grassroots effort, encouraging friends and neighbors to donate points to their school.

“This program has received attention around the state and around the country for its success,” Eng said. “It has been recognized by several different agencies for its impact on the environment.”

He said Anderson Cooper featured

the program on his show AC360°, and the City received a 2010 Sustainable Government Best Practice Award from the Collins Center for Public Policy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the important social and economic public policy issues facing Florida and beyond and dedicated to finding meaningful solutions to their challenges, according to the organization’s website.

The award-winning program is a single-stream recycling program, meaning residents do not need to separate glass, paper, aluminum, etc.

“Everything goes into the same container,” Eng said. “We ask residents to be considerate of the fact that these carts are for recycling only, not household garbage.”

For information regarding problems with the collection of recycling carts, contact Waste Pro at 954-967-4200. For any problems with the recycling cart, contact the City’s Environmental Services Division at 954-967-4320. And for any questions or concerns with RecycleBank accounts, reward points, participating retailers or account activation, contact RecycleBank at 1-888-727-2978.

Florida Intercultural Academy, a Broward County Public Charter School, opened its doors in Hollywood in 2005. The school finished the first year with 59 students and offered a curriculum that encompassed world studies of different cultures. Now, the Hollywood campus has both elementary and middle school grade levels and enrolls nearly 300 students.

Because of the increase in its student body, Florida Intercultural Academy has purchased additional property in Davie at 3367 N. University Drive on the southeast corner of Stirling Road and University Drive to serve even more students. The school will incorporate a “World Wise” program modeled on the United States Peace Corps World Wise Schools curriculum.

“The Peace Corps World Wise Schools program, which is implemented within our middle school, is promoting cultural understanding through an appreciation of similarities and differences of world peoples,” said Wayne Williams, a board member and parent. “It’s important that middle school students understand and value opinions and cultures different from their own, making them global citizens.”

The school hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 28 to introduce the Davie campus, and Dr. Gwendolyn Purcell, founder and director of Florida Intercultural University and a Returned Peace Corp Volunteer (RPCV-Jamaica), said the school is unique in the fact that it offers a multicultural education that focuses on a specific country each month and implements that culture into each subject taught at the school, whether math, reading, social studies or even science.

“The students will have a global attitude and a global outlook,” she said. “Specifically, we aim to foster dialogue moreover than a general textbook by offering students experiences of what life is like in places around the globe through Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV), video DVDs, Peace Corps books, social studies lessons, Multicultural Food Fair and many other culminating lessons. Students

and parents enjoy the focus of a well-rounded education inclusive of world studies.”

Just seven to ten minutes away on University Drive and Griffin Road are by far some of the best-priced lunches and dinners in South Florida. I mean good food – real good food – and large portions. With appetizers to please the pallet and pasta cooked to order,

it’s no wonder all the tables around us were feasting on all three courses. “No table cloths here; I’d rather give my customers a greater value in quality and quantity,” said Tommy Fariello, owner and hands on manager. Evidently, he must be doing something right because this place is jumping. With a wine bottle on each and every table and a wine list that seems to be 50 percent less in price than most restaurants, I can’t see how people don’t buy a case or two from this restaurant to take home. In essence, we ate, we drank and we were happy …very happy.

Starters: Very exciting dishes like the Porcini Mushroom Ravioli ($10) in a brandy mushroom cream sauce was simply divine, and the Zuppa Di Mussels ($10) in a light tomato broth was purr-fect. The Pear and Cheese Pasta Purses with cinnamon ($9) was so sinful I wanted to kiss the chef (I kissed the owner).

We ordered the French Onion

Soup, Salad and more ….Wow, what an evening...I’m in Heaven. We expected nothing less than good food and good service, great plating and low prices, and that’s exactly what we got. The Chilean Sea Bass ($28) melted in our mouths, the Eggplant Rollantini ($15) was passed around the table for all to enjoy.

Low and behold, out came this triple-decker Filet Mignon ($32) packed with flavor, mashed potatoes, string beans and roasted sweet carrots, which is enough for two to share and which comes with soup or a salad (worth every fork-full). The Nature-fed Tomahawk Veal Chop ($28) is worth the trip from anywhere in South Florida.

The Parmigiana Combo (Veal, Chicken and Eggplant) with penne pasta on the side was plentiful and only costs $19. The wine kept flowing, each dinner plate was picture perfect and the flavor and quality

of everything we ordered was spot on. I asked for the chef to come to our table to congratulate him on a job over and above our expectations.

Thanks again Chef Fernando and Chef Juan for an evening that was another Dining Adventure. We had no room whatsoever for dessert…next time for sure.

To add more excitement at the restaurant, between 3 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Tommy gives away a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink with every meal purchased at the restaurant. (Now that’s a deal.) Offer is only good until April 1. You just gotta love this place!!!

There is also catering from A to Z – that’s Antipasto to Zuppa Di Mussels and everything in between. Enjoy and have a very delicious Valentine’s Day.

Here’s to good food...good friends...good times… and here’s to you.

Princess Reads-a-Lot Kali Rosendo, a sophomore at the University School and an ambassador of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ educational programs, recently visited Sheridan Park Elementary School in Hollywood to kick off the delivery of the Broward Center’s gift of more than 1,500 books to 550 local Head Start students.

Sheridan Park Elementary School is one of 12 area schools that participate in the Broward Center’s Reading Readiness Through the Theater program, which fosters early reading for all children. Throughout the year, students in the Head Start classes at all of these schools receive books to begin a home library; receive free admission to live performances of these titles at the Broward Center’s theaters, which they are invited to attend with their parents, siblings or caregivers; and receive activity sheets, which add a new dimension to learning, before and after the show.

“The Reading Readiness program enables students to practice their

reading skills at home with their families and fosters connections between learning and the arts,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley. “The Broward Center is proud to be a literacy partner in this vital program that impacts so many of

the underserved children in our community at an early age.”

The Broward Center team also distributed books to the other schools that participate in the Reading Readiness program: Bennett Elementary, Bethune Elementary, Charles Drew Family Resource

Center, Deerfield Beach Elementary, Tradewinds Elementary, Peters Elementary, Broadview Elementary, Collins Elementary, Fairway Elementary, Davie Elementary and Stephen Foster Elementary.

The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) is excited to kick off 2011 with the organization’s newly elected

President, Donna Dickey of The Miami Herald Media Company.

This year’s theme is “innovation,” and with this in mind, Dickey, the vice president/Broward business manager for The Miami Herald, stated, “We know that in order to thrive and to help our members thrive, we must be INNOVATIVE! The key to running a Chamber that continues to be a good investment for our members is to stay

ahead of the curve, so we will continue to invent and create new services, programs, events and value to help our members succeed in 2011.”

Along with this year’s theme, Dickey also feels it is imperative that the Chamber keeps the new mission on the mind to ensure the GHCC stays laser-focused on the goals and objectives that mean the most to its members.

Mission: To be the organization that fosters a business climate that promotes success, excellence and resources for our members and the greater Hollywood community.

Dickey, 36-year veteran of The Miami Herald, spent the first 22 years of her career in circulation. She worked in all Miami Herald markets and in various positions on the marketing side of the newspaper business, including: Director

of Circulation Marketing, Dade Sales & Marketing Manager, Subscriber Service Manager, Broward Palm Beach Sales & Marketing Manager, Palm Beach Circulation Manager and Retention Manager.

Dickey’s community involvement includes holding leadership positions on several Chamber boards. She currently serves on The Hollywood Art & Culture Center and The Common Wealth Institute Boards of Directors.

Some of her accolades and recognitions include: “Broward Volunteer of the Year Award,” 2003-2004; “The Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award,” 2007; “Knight Ridder Excellence Award for Marketing,” 1997; and “Miami Herald’s Herald Hero,” 2002. She was also nominated for the “South Florida Business Journal’s

Business Woman of the Year” in 2003. For more information, please contact

DR. SCOTT HEDRICK

After hearing about a 9-year-old child’s battle with Lymphoma cancer from a friend, Hollywood resident Kristi Huddleston felt compelled to help in any way she could. She helped raise money for the family and wrote the “little warrior” a song that delivered a message of hope, strength and faith, and in the process, she founded Music 4 Miracles, a nonprofit organization that aims to raise financial support for children battling cancer and provides music education to lift their spirits and give them hope.

“Music is very inspiring,” said Huddleston, a mother of twin sons. “There have been dozens of studies that prove music therapy helps heal all kinds of patients. It’s soothing, and this is a great way to help children battling cancer.”

Huddleston began Music 4 Miracles in 2009, and she is now taking her Hollywood-based nonprofit organization one step further. She initiated Harmony Hope, a music education program specifically created

for children battling cancer. Each child enrolled in the program will receive private music lessons for one year in his or her home to learn an instrument of his or her choice. The children will then have the opportunity to showcase their musical talents at the organization’s annual benefit concert and other events throughout the year.

Huddleston said one Harmony Hope

participant, 6-year-old Mackenzie Gonzalez – who is fighting a very rare and aggressive cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma and who recently underwent brain surgery – wants to learn how to play the piano. They will make her dream come true.

“We believe that bringing music into the child’s home will give them a positive focus, while at the same time, inspire hope and provide a music education that can last a lifetime,” Huddleston said.

Music 4 Miracles will host a fundraising event for the Harmony Hope program on March 4 at the Passion Nightclub at the Hollywood Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The event, which begins at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7:30 p.m., will

feature an open bar for one hour (8 to 9 p.m.); performances by Music 4 Miracles singers and musicians who will perform Huddleston’s self-written song that launched the nonprofit organization; raffles; and a silent auction for a $20 donation.

It will cost $2,400 for each child enrolled in the program, and while

Huddleston has applied for a grant that would put 30 children through Harmony Hope if she receives it, she still needs members of the community to help in any way they can.

“I believe everyone should give back to the community, and we should all do the best we can,” Huddleston said. “This event will be good entertainment and a good night out for a great cause.”

In addition to the Harmony Hope event, Huddleston and Music 4 Miracles will visit the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s oncology ward on Valentine’s Day to bring the gift of music to the children fighting for their lives. Huddleston said they will play games like musical chairs and Name That Tune.

“For me, children are precious little angles,” she said. “I find a lot of joy in helping these children. It’s a great thing to see a child with cancer smile, and (this endeavor) has been extremely spiritually rewarding for me.”

The Hollywood City Commission unanimously approved the Margaritaville Land Lease at the Jan. 19 City Commission meeting, bringing Hollywood one step closer to containing a $130 million tourist attraction complete with a 349-room hotel, public pools, restaurants and a new parking garage.

Funding for the project, as stated in the 99-year lease agreement, will come from a variety of sources, including the EB-5 Investor Visa Program, a federal program that offers green cards to foreign nationals and their immediate family members to invest in a project that creates a minimum of 10 American jobs. The EB-5 project will consist of $75 million of the project’s funding. Additional funding will come from $10 million in developer equity and a $10 million loan from the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency to be repaid in 10 years at 5 percent interest.

The 300-page lease also sets the foundation for the creation of a Community Development District, an independent board with the sole purpose of raising $30 million for the

construction of the public portion of the 1056-space parking garage. Six-hundred spaces will be public.

Developer Lon Tabatchnick will pay the City $20,000 a month during construction, which is scheduled to begin March 1, 2012, according to the lease agreement, and the City will be paid $500,000 a year, with a 3 percent increase annually, once the hotel is operational.

Additionally, the lease states that any changes to the previously approved site plan will require approval from the City Commission through an amendment, giving the City a lot of control over the appearance and layout of the project, said City Attorney Jeffrey

Sheffel, who presented the terms of the lease to the City Commissioners.

The Margaritaville Resort is scheduled to open in March 2014.

“I have never worked with a municipality in any state that put forth the effort of working through the evenings, through the weekends, and through vacations to get (a project) right,” Tabatchnick said. “The whole goal was to get it right. This document has to survive 99 years, and we all worked really hard.”

For more information about the terms of the lease, visit the City of Hollywood website at www.hollywoodfl.org.

I had a conversation with a good friend of mine who told me about a new strategic partner he had just hired to help propel his business forward. He felt super excited about the initial meetings they had and the possibilities they created for his company. But, his enthusiasm started to dim when I asked him what the status was. He said, “Well I hired her, and I haven’t heard a thing since then.”

I initially assured him that a lot of work was probably going on “behind the scenes” and that he needed to be patient. It had only been a week and a half. I could hear myself starting to get a bit defensive. But why? The more my friend kept talking, the more uncomfortable I got. It forced me to ask myself some questions: What is my customer’s experience when working with my company? Do we set the expectations up only to disappoint? I realized we sometimes get so focused on doing the work we’ve been hired to do and the results we are trying to achieve that we overlook a critical element: the customer experience. I felt like a huge idiot and a fake given the business I’m in. I should know better. It has been an unbelievable wake-up call and opportunity for my company, and I’m happy to report it’s now a topic we think about constantly and, more importantly, act upon.

We created these seven simple steps to create an exceptional customer experience:

1) Manage customer expectations: Make sure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities and how often they want a progress report. We use a great project management system called Basecamp (www.basecamphq.com) which allows our customers to check in anytime,

and even better, we can give them assignments.

2) Check in early and often: Ask your client every so often how things are going. What could be improved upon? Don’t be a stalker about this, but touch base every so often.

3) Develop a communication system that works: Make it easy to share information and feedback. Some of our clients love Basecamp, but others like a weekly conference call, while others love e-mail.

4) Do what you say you are going to do – EVERY TIME!: Be relentless about keeping your promises.

5) Put yourself in your customer’s shoes: Ask yourself, “If I were them, would I be ecstatic?” If the answer is less than positive, figure out what it would take to get it back on track…and fast.

6) Be willing to say no: When you care intensely about your customers, it is easy to fall into the trap of saying yes to everything. Big mistake. Say no, and provide an alternative solution.

7) Maintain a human touch: Get eye to eye every so often with a face-to-face meeting.

Bottom line is if your customers don’t appreciate what you provide them, then it doesn’t matter how hard you work behind the scenes. Make 2011 “The Year of the Customer.” You can’t go wrong when you have elated customers. Go create some!

Broward County Commissioners have amended an ordinance that defines and governs dangerous dogs. The newly revised ordinance identifies a dog as “dangerous” after the dog has killed or severely injured a domestic animal more than once. Under the revised ordinance, a dog that kills once is defined as an “aggressive” dog and is subject to regulation. The amended ordinance also provides restitution to the owners of dogs attacked by dangerous dogs and requires dogs defined as dangerous to undergo an examination by an animal behavioral specialist for assessment.

Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca brought the amended ordinance forward.

“This is a basic, common sense change to a bad law,” Commissioner LaMarca said.

“I am very pleased we were unified on the decision to enact real, common sense solutions for the citizens. Our goal was to promote responsible pet ownership around the county, and I think we got a little closer to that today. This is a perfect example of a good non-partisan issue, one of many that will come before us.”

Broward Commissioner Lois Wexler pushed through the amendment that will label a dog as “aggressive” if it kills

another animal once. “The revised ordinance is a mirror

of the state law,” Commissioner Wexler said. “But one free kill of an animal doesn’t get me where I want to go. If we define a dog that has killed another animal once as aggressive, it will get the owner’s attention.”

In order to qualify as either an aggressive or dangerous dog, the attack in question must have occurred off the owner’s property and be unprovoked.

Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs proposed further changing the ordinance to include restitution “to pay the victim’s documented, reasonable veterinary expenses and disposal costs if applicable.” The restitution must be made within 15 days after documentation is presented.

“We have to be responsible to the victims of these attacks,” Jacobs said. “They often have no recourse.”

Dogs can also be euthanized under the current ordinance if they had previously been declared as dangerous and then attack or bite a person or domestic animal without provocation. Any dog that attacks and causes severe injury to or death to a human being is also subject to being euthanized. Dog owners are permitted to request a hearing to challenge those actions.

‘Dangerous Dog’ Ordinance changedIn a new variation of identity theft

and fraud, imposters are creating web sites and Yellow Page ads to imitate respectable businesses. Innocent citizens and businesses have been fooled by these criminals who overcharge, do unprofes-sional work, and are not connected to the genuine contractor.

Lee’s Locksmith of Hollywood and their customers have been victims of this crime. Lee’s is taking a proactive re-sponse to warn the Hollywood commu-nity. Through this notice and other pub-lications at Lee’s is putting the word out. Lee’s general manager Marco Salvino,

This is happening more and more to contractors providing on site services. Don’t be a victim. Learn how to avoid this. Be warned and be safe.” Go to www.LeesLocksmith.com and click on FRAUD ALERT for details or call Lee’s at 954-391-5484.

Dear Pink Realtor,The real estate market has finally

turned into a “buyer’s market.” Prices have remained pretty stable the last six months, houses are the most affordable they have been in decades – seeing some good deals out there – and the banks are (finally!) lending to first-time homebuyers again. So, I am ready to buy a house.

The problem I have run in to is the real estate agents. I have called at least a dozen of them to find a house. I have gotten two different results, and I don’t like either one. The first group, I will call the disappearing acts. I call, I leave messages, I e-mail…and nothing. Or, we talk once, and they never call back again. These agents I guess don’t want to work. That’s OK; I don’t want to work with them. The second group is demanding and pushy. One Realtor had the nerve to ask me – on our first call – if I was qualified to buy a house. Why else would I call? Then, he even said he needed to see proof that I am qualified. How do I find a professional Realtor to help me find a house and actually give me good service?

Sincerely, Customer is Always Right

Dear Right,First, on behalf of all of the

hard-working, professional Realtors of South Florida, I apologize. As in any field, some professionals provide better service than others.

The Realtor who asked you about qualification was actually giving you good advice and setting you up to win. It could be that he did not explain it well, but that is another matter. It is accurate that the banks are lending. However, it is vitally important to know what type of loan

you are qualified for prior to beginning the process. Why?

Some sellers can accept any type of loan for their property. For many years, any seller could accept (almost) any type of loan. Today, sellers are limited in what loan types they can accept, usually for reasons beyond their control. For example, banks (the sellers of all those foreclosure properties) are frequently only able to accept cash, can usually accept conventional loan types, and less often can accept FHA and VA loan programs. Many condominium sellers cannot accept any loan type and can only sell for cash with no financing. And nearly all condominium sellers cannot accept FHA loan programs at this time.

If an agent were to show you houses while unaware of what loan type you are qualified for, it would be highly likely you would eventually find a property you wanted to buy and be unable to do so – solely based on your loan type. He would have wasted your time and his, and I’m sure you would then be dissatisfied to have never been informed about why you needed to be pre-qualified in advance.

Now, to the heart of the matter… Let’s find you a qualified professional.

Not every licensed real estate agent is a Realtor. A “Realtor” is a licensed agent who is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and is held to higher ethical and professional standards. There are 1.3 million Realtors, mostly in the United States, and an additional 1 million licensed real estate agents who are not members of NAR and cannot use the term “Realtor.” In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics claims only about 600,000 working real estate brokers/salespersons (http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos120.htm).

The bottom line: Fewer than half

of the people licensed to practice real estate professionally are actually working as agents. A few more go to the trouble to pay dues, advance their training and voluntarily agree to be held to a higher ethical and professional standard.

So, how do you find one of the select Realtors who are well qualified to represent you in researching, contracting, negotiating and closing what will probably be the largest single transaction you will do in your lifetime?

I suggest the following: Call various Realtors who work

in your area – find them on the advice of friends, family, colleagues, etc. or from advertising (online, in newspapers, magazines, signs in your neighborhood, etc.). Ask them as many questions as it takes for you to feel comfortable and satisfied that the person you are speaking to knows what he/she is doing.

Be sure to ask them what services they will provide, how the process works, how long they have been in business and what extra training and certifications they have. I suggest working with a person who has worked full time in your area for at least three years. Ask for references and check them!

Your agent should be your partner in realizing your dream of home ownership, provide you great service and have answers to every question you have. He/she should be loyal and represent only you. And likewise, you should “hire” the best Realtor you find and work with only him/her.

Dear Pink Realtor,All I hear about with this real

estate market is how low the prices are and how it is all a “buyer’s market.” With so many foreclosures and people giving their property away, I am wondering if I will ever sell my house. When will it be a “seller’s market” again?

Sincerely,Ready & Willing but Unable

Seller

Dear Ready & Willing,The good news is the market is

stabilizing and improving. In 2010, more houses sold than

at the height of the real estate sales market in 2006 but at a fraction of the price, as reported by the Miami Association of Realtors. So, prices are down and volume is up. Buyers are

currently at an advantage.Analysts expect the industry to

continue the long road to recovery in 2011. Short sales and foreclosures account for about half of the sales volume of 2010, and there are thousands of such properties in Broward County that will have to work their way through the system before we are anywhere near a return to a “seller’s market.” With a glut of distressed properties on the market, foreclosure cases stalled in courts and high unemployment, there’s still a possibility that prices could slip further this year. Market research firm Clear Capital is predicting another 6.5 percent drop in South Florida home values in 2011 (as reported in The Miami Herald Jan 20, 2011).

There are some positive signs as well. The overall inventory of homes is down to 40,000 in South Florida from a peak of 75,000 in mid-2008. The law of supply and demand is coming into play here which should raise the median price of a home in Hollywood. Investments from overseas investors have stimulated demand, as well as a move toward granting more mortgage loans in Florida.

The even-better-than-good news, Dear Ready & Willing Seller, is demand for move-in ready homes is on the rise. Buyers are beginning to realize that even if they can acquire a house for a low price, there may be months of work at a cost of thousands of dollars to complete before the house is even ready to be lived in. We are hearing more buyers asking for a “move-in-condition” house than ever.

Call a Realtor, and ask about a comparative market analysis for homes like yours. He/she will look up actual closed sales, pending sales and available homes to give you a good idea of what a similar home to yours might sell for. You may be pleasantly surprised!

Community comes together to support a local family

Priscilla Avilez hasn’t lost faith. She hasn’t given up hope. She knows her husband will get better soon and will be reunited with her and their three young children shortly. And until then, Priscilla has the love and support of family, friends and the community.

Last September, Priscilla’s husband, Derek, a Hollywood firefighter, had a skim boarding accident on Hollywood Beach and has since been at Memorial Regional Hospital paralyzed and on a ventilator. Priscilla witnessed the accident. She recalled the scream she yelled that informed others of the accident; she recalled the feeling of panic she felt when she saw her husband

floating in the water; and she recalled the doctors telling her he had broken his neck. But despite all these tragic things, Priscilla has remained strong…in large part because of

her support system.“Before Derek’s accident, I didn’t

see the kindness in people that I used to, but now, I see how much kindness people have to offer,” she said. “The community has responded very well. They’ve gone above and beyond helping us out.”

Priscilla said Derek’s co-workers at the fire station have picked up his shifts so Priscilla can still receive his paychecks and said dozens of people

have approached her wanting to help in any way possible. The Hollywood Junior Chamber, or the Jaycees, for example, recently donated the money they raised at Hollywood Gazette’s monthly Party with a Purpose event to Priscilla and Derek. The fundraising event raised about $1,500 for the Avilez family.

“The Jaycees is not always about putting on events to raise money for our own organization,” said Sara Lavenka, president of the Jaycees, who said she was thrilled with the community’s response at the event. “We try to have events that benefit people in need, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. Priscilla is a very, very strong woman. She and Derek have faith and strength, and they are a great couple.”

Priscilla said her husband is getting

stronger every day – she said Derek recently breathed on his own for 12 hours – and said she will continue to perform range of motion exercises with him until he can do everything on his own in rehabilitation. She feels confident he will get better soon and feels grateful for the generosity the Hollywood community has shown her family.

“Every time I turn around, someone is planning something else (to raise money),” Priscilla said. “I’m very thankful for everything everyone has done for us. I’m very happy.”

Anyone interested in making a donation to the Avilez family can contact any Hollywood fire station. They will collect checks (made out to Professional Hollywood Firefighters Care of Derek Avilez) to give to the family.
