This lesson explores the Church's convic on that life here and now is prepara on for an extraordinary world that is yet to come - a supernatural des ny. Father Barron presents the Catholic vision of death, judgment, heaven, hell and purgatory. In this lesson, Father Barron explores Catholic spirituality, which is centered on prayer. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "Prayer is the li ing up of the mind and the heart to God."

FROM THE PASTOR PARISH NEWS

www.StAmbrose.us - PAGE 3

…“O God, who have commanded us to listen to your beloved Son, be pleased, we pray, to nourish us inwardly by your word, that,

with spiritual sight made pure, we may rejoice to behold your glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.” The Collect (opening prayer) for this Second Sunday of Lent really focuses our attention to listening to the Lord. We pray that God will strengthen us and purify us so that focused on listening, we may walk the path that leads to eternal glory. How can we use this time, this Lent, to listen more attentively to the Lord in our lives. …We pray this second week of Lent that this will be the time for a change of heart. The opening prayer gives us a great way to create and stir that change of heart….as we listen to God…then let us listen attentively to each other. Listening is more than just hearing. Listening is attuning ourselves to what is going on in the mind, and heart, of the other person. Listening is not presuming we know what they are going to say. Listening calls us to be attentive. The more we listen, the more our hearts will be open to changing our hearts and turning our lives to the Lord. It will also bring about more loving and peaceful homes and workplaces. …This past week WE received this letter: “I wish to express my great appreciation and gratitude for the help and understanding extended to me by Saint Ambrose, its staff and the Catholic Works of Mercy team. You are truly doing God’s work and those, like myself, who are (temporarily) “down on our luck” thank you. I personally thank you from the bottom of my heart. Special thanks to the telephone staff and those compassionate individuals working

the food bank. I will be in touch personally soon and hope to extend my thanks and gratefulness in person.” The good you do…the good we do together as a parish community! God bless you for your goodness and your support for our parish which allows us to do this good work. …BTW….if you want to see something impressive….stop by the Lehner Center lower level where the NEW foodbank has been shelved and organized and is up and running. Once a month the CWM Team will be asking for a particular food item (e.g. peanut butter, beans, etc). Now that we have the space, we can resume a monthly collection for the Food Bank. Thanks to all who work our Catholic Works of Mercy Program. ...Many thanks to all who have responded to the Catholic Charities Appeal. We’ve had about 600 Appeal envelopes returned over the past two weeks. On behalf of the 300,000 people we help through Catholic Charities….thank you. …We are working to create a monthly community service project (e.g. fixing up an elderly person’s home, etc.) for our parish. Many have asked for more service opportunities, especially projects that can be done ‘as a family.’ Anyone interested in helping create/shape this program is invited on Tuesday, March 5th, at 7:30 pm in the Lehner Center. Join us as we come together to discuss what ideas and ways we can use our gifts to serve the Lord and create a better world for all. …This Sunday our Scouts celebrate their annual Blue and Gold Dinner. We are very blessed to have a strong scouting program in our parish. Many, many thanks to all of our scout leaders who work so hard to help our young people and young adults develop strong and solid character supported by our faith. Thank you.

…Please continue to pray for our Confirmation candidates who will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation next Sunday with Bishop Lennon at 2 pm and 5 pm. We pray that they may learn to listen to God and be strengthened by the Spirit of God to do the work of the Lord. May they be open to receiving the gifts of the Spirit. …I was amazed the other day when I walked into the Saint Ambrose School Spring Musical practice to hear 112 of our students singing and dancing together. Almost 25 percent of our students are choosing to be involved this year!! Wonderful!!! Many thanks to Chris Monczewski, Tina Nuti and Tom Bonezzi who are leading the charge (and/or directing the musical!!). …Speaking of Tom Bonezzi, this weekend marks his second anniversary as our Music Director. He is doing great things to help us lift our hearts and voices to the Lord. Our music ministry is growing and thriving under his direction. Thank you, Tom. May God bless and keep you (at Saint Ambrose for many, many years)!!! …All of us are called to Listen to the Word of God. ALPHA is a great way to help you LISTEN to God’s Word in this season of Lent. It meets every Thursday for about 90 minutes. It’s a chance to listen and be inspired by the Word of God. For your own good, please open your heart and give it a try. Thursday at 6:30pm in Hilkert Hall. …Next Friday is the First Friday of the month. Father Cassidy will lead the monthly First Friday Devotion starting at 11 am with Mass and Adoration. …In these holy days of Lent – remember the Little Black/Purple books. Remember the Rice Bowls. Remember 10-40. Let this be the time that we turn our hearts and our lives to the Lord.

What fears or apprehensions do you struggle with? How does your faith help you through the dark mes?

The Lord made a covenant with Abram. Have you ever made a covenant with someone, and what did it mean to you? How does worship lead us deeper into covenant with God?

Peter and his companions fell asleep on the mountain. What are some things we can do to stay awake to the glory of God?

Dear Church Family, Thank you for the constant prayers, sen ments of sympathy, hugs and words filled with care and consola on to comfort my family and me since the loss of our son, Brian. The loss of a loved one brings profound mourning and grief. As a parent, losing a child, no ma er what age, is a loss you never want to endure. Knowing Brian is now in Jesus’ loving arms, brings peace. Our St. Ambrose faith community, along with my family’s previous parish, Holy Martyrs, have revealed God’s love through words and ac ons these last three weeks. The meals, cards, flowers, and Mission Impossible dona ons have honored Brian’s life and brought abundant consola on to Sco and me along with our daughters, Aaron and her husband Loren and Amy and her husband Aaron. As I and my family care for Brian’s Therapy Dog, Ely, you may see her here on campus. Brian worked with Ely to care for Au s c children and Ely accompanied Brian to work each day. Now, Ely brings comfort to my family, and has been welcomed as part of the Noah’s Ark ministry and will be a frequent visitor to the PSR and Rectory Offices. With hear elt thanks and deep apprecia on,

M . You are more than welcome to join us! This week at FIAT we are taking some me to talk with each other about our encounters

with God here at St. Ambrose when we gather around the table. Lent is a me for us to encounter God and allow him to work in our hearts. That is what happened in the Gospel today. This is one of my favorite scenes in the Gospels, mostly because Peter’s gut reac on is exactly what I would say. “It is good that we are here.” I would want to stay on that mountain. But Peter “did not know what he was

saying.” We cannot bo le up our encounters with God. We cannot keep his glory in a tent, like Peter wanted to. This Lent we have the opportunity to be on our own mountain and, through our prayer, fast, and almsgiving, we can encounter God in his Glory. And while we cannot prolong those encounters, let’s allow them to strengthen us in our Lenten journey. I’m praying for you.

JOIN US TONIGHT!
