… the long title

Semantic Web-based Distributed Information Systems to Master Hybrid Networks.

Keywords (and agenda):

- Semantic Web- Distributed Information Systems- Mastering Hybrid Networks -> Control Planes

Semantic Web

Semantic Web organizes data so that is contains ‘meaning’ that can be understood by machines and applications.

RDF - Resource Description Framework - provides a way to categorize information:- resources are described by URIs;- triplets define the relations between resources:

Why? The need to inject more meaning into user requests to the network management planes, more meaning available to take decisions within the management plane.

Distributed informationConcept of indendently maintained distributed information fits the

hybrid networking world and its different administrative domains.

References between resources, both internally to a document and externally with the use of URIs.

Leverage existing RDF tools.

Control Planes

Some issues:- what level of detail needs to be exposed abstraction problem;- how do you exchange information between domains:push or pull;- who has right to see what: policies.

Control planes setup the inter-domain and intra-domain paths.

They need up-to-date and consistent information.

Network Description Language

Choice of RDF instead of XML syntaxGrounded modeling based on G0805 description:

Schemas

The result:• Topology schema

describes devices, interfaces, links and connections between them on a single layer.

• Layer schemadescribes specific network technologies and the relation between

network layers.• Capability schema

describes device capabilities.• Domain schema

describes administrative domains, services within a domain and how to give an abstracted view of the network in a domain.

• Physical schemadescribes the physical aspects of network elements.

• Plus nine technology schemata.

Topology schema

A vocabulary for defining network topology on a single layer.

On*Vector Workshop

Multi-layer schemas

A vocabulary for defining network layers and interrelations between layer networks.

ToolsTo facilitate adoption we provide NDL creation and

validation tools.

Demonstrations: SC|06

Goal: to show that with one NDL file per GLIF GOLE we can find a suitable path along the various domains.:

SC|07

Goal: To show that we can do path finding in a (realistic) multi-layer network:

Standardization

A global need for exchange-able topologies:different control planes that want to cooperate.

Forum for this activity is the Open Grid Forum - OGF.

So far…. NDL, PerfSONAR, cNIS, iShare, Grid5K contributions toward the definition of one model.

NML-WG

Co-chairs: Martin Swany (UDelaware) and Paola Grosso (UvA)

Purpose: to describe network topologies, so that the outcome is a standardized network description ontology and schema, facilitating interoperability between different projects.

The scope is to define one or more schemas to describe:• a layer independent network topology • properties that are common across multiple network technologies,• a mechanism so that other working groups or other projects may combine technology specific

schemas with the schemas created by the NML working group.

Such a schema can be used to create inter-domain network graphs at various abstraction levels, to provide an information model for service discovery, and to facilitate lightpath provisioning.

Conclusions

The major NDL results:- adoption in the GLIF for the description of GOLEs;- definition of path finding algorithm in multi-layer

network;- basis for research into domain abstraction;- part of the standardization effort from the networking

community.

From the Semantic Web approach we see a promising new research line: semantic for end-to-end applications control.
