Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah WabarakatuhDear Parents and students,

As we commence 2019, I would like to wel-come all students, parents and staff to what will be another successful year insha’Allah. I hope everyone had a relaxing school holidays and are ready for another busy year at ICOM.

Alhamdulillah the college had a smooth start to the year thanks to the preparations and plan-ning of our hard-working superstar teachers and staff. Having the student book packs ordered and delivered before the students commenced in 2019 has contributed to having the college hit the ground running and get ahead with the teaching and learning process from day 1.

An important milestone in any person’s educa-tion is the completion of Year 12. 2018 saw the Islamic College of Melbourne’s first group of Year 12 graduates and I am proud of the re-sults achieved by all graduates. I would like to congratulate all our Year 12 students on their outstanding efforts and achievements and to all College staff, for their role in supporting and challenging our students to enable them to reach their potential.

For the two top scoring students, Qaida Iman Mohd Azizan and Mohammad Hassan, I was hap-py to see you both at the Senior Secondary Parent Information Session where the college handed out the ICOM University Scholarships and DUX award for 2018

The college held its Primary Parent Information Session on 4 February and the Junior Secondary Parent Information Session on Thursday 7 Febru-ary. It was a pleasure to see the number of parents attending increase every year. During these ses-sions, the college also announced and handed out badges to the 2019 class captains, vice captains, in addition to the house captains and vice captains. By attending these sessions, parents are provided with important information and an opportunity to clarify any queries regarding their children’s educa-tion at the college.

The college has introduced this year a clear struc-ture in the Secondary School, with the separation of Junior Secondary (Year 7 to 9) and Senior Sec-ondary (Year 10 to 12). Over the holidays, there were significant construction works happening, with the new double storey structure for Senior Secondary. This building has provided our Senior students with their own space tailored to assist in their development at school. The college is proud of our strong VCE program which also include VET subjects: Health and Business Management.

Another program that was introduced this year is the Quran Memorisation Academy for selected stu-dents. The program is designed to target advanced students, which serves to help students revise memorised surah’s and to memorise new surahs. The ultimate goal of this program is the memorisa-tion and Hifz of the whole Quran. Finally, the college would like to invite any parent interested in joining the ICOM Parent Advisory Committee for 2019. The meeting to elect mem-bers will take place on Wednesday, 27 February at 2.40pm.

Thank you for your continued trust in the Islamic College of Melbourne and insha’Allah 2019 will be another successful year.

Dr Abdul M. Kamareddine, PrincipalIslamic College Of Melbourne

As you are aware, the college cannot provide medication to students unless prescribed to them, this includes hayfever tablets & paracetamol. If your child requires medication, your child’s name and directions must be on the label before handing it to the nurse.

From this year the college school bag will be compulsory for all students. They are currently avail-able at the uniform shop. Please see the parent portal for further details of the uniform policy.

Parents must advise the college of any medical conditions their child may have, whether it is severe or just a mild condition.

The uniform for Term 1 is the summer uniform. All students are expected to wear the summer uni-form, this includes the school hat. During sunny days students should be sun smart, drink plenty of water and, use sunscreen. Parents are advised that there’s a NO HAT NO PLAY rule.

Please ensure you inform the college or update your details on the Parent Portal if your contact details have changed.

Parents please can you remind students who walk home to be vigilant and aware of their surround-ings at all times. Please discourage students from being on their phones when walking home. In case of an emergency can you ensure that they memorise at least one parents phone number or point of contact.

Enrolments for 2019 have now closed. Unfortunately, due to the number of students currently enroled at the Islamic College of Melbourne and the number of new enrolments already received, the college will no longer be accepting any further applications.

Parents who have submitted an expression of interest form will be contacted if a place is available for their child next year.

Year 6 GraduationAssalamualaikum families of ICOM,On 6 December 2018 the Year Sixes culminated their primary schooling years with their graduation. Students spent many hours rehearsing the various aspects of the graduation and saw it all come together on the night to a great success. For the first time ever we had a Graduation Committee con-sisting of Year Six students giving their voice to what they wanted for their big night. Our four M.C’s – Zainab Ahsan, Zane Taleb, Safia Ibrahim and Aman Berberovic – superbly carried the event through-out the evening. We had three performances that related to being strong and faithful Muslim’s, and both resonated with parents, staff and students.

This year we introduced many new initiatives across the graduation, none more successful than our first ever academic awards. The seven recipients, given out over three separate awards – academic im-provement, academic achievement and academic excellence – were thoroughly deserved. Congratu-lations to Safia Ibrahim, Adam Ghates, Zane Taleb (Academic Improver), Muleyka Fawad, Hamdaan Ahmed, Alina Rehman (Academic Achiever) and Mahnoor Asif (Academic Excellence).

At the end of the night, after all the ice cream had been eaten and teddy bears signed by friends and family, the Year Six students made their way home for the holidays and prepared for their new chal-lenge – Secondary School! We wish the students every success in secondary school and Inshallah the graduation will be a night that lives long in the memory.

Mr. Danny Gray on behalf of the Year Six team.

Library NewsRead Learn Connect

Welcoming back everyone to the ICOM Library in 2019!

The ICOM Library continues to be one of the popular spots for Secondary and Senior Primary students (Year 5 & 6) during recess and lunch. Whether it is to print their assignments, read and borrow books, or just chill and relax with friends. If a picture can paint a thousand words, these pictures of our students in the library paints a dictionary of happy and content words repeated many times. To those that haven’t visited the library this year, we hope to see you soon.

Mrs Haifa, Ms Payal & Ms Zetty ICOM Library Team

Our library has over 31,000 books and resources. In January and February 2019 alone, we have circulated a total of 11,100 items. Wow! Fiction Series, again, the most borrowed books among the Fiction Books in our collection, with a blazing score of 57%. Yay! The Library has spent thousands of dollars on books in just 2 months, and we will buy more books for our “book-hungry” readers this year. Don’t forget to share your “wish-list” with the Librarians.

On 13 February 2019, Year 3A and 3B spent a day exploring A Plant’s World at Ecolinc Science and Technology Innovations Centre. Throughout the day, students participated in four workshops. They used microscopes to get a clos-er look at the different parts of a flower.

Students were left in awe when learning about the roles of birds, bees and butterflies in pollination. They created a replica flower complete with stamina, stigma and pollen. Soon they were energeti-cally roaming around as ‘bees’ pollinating ‘flowers’. Students eagerly propagated plants in the glasshouse and learnt how to grow plants from cuttings of rosemary.

Finally, our young scientists investigated soil quality in garden beds and tested the pH of samples. A powerful learning opportunity promoting student curiosity. We thank our amazing teaching staff and parent helper.
