February Letter from the Clergy Dear Friends,

Within the wider Christian tradition, the Christmas season

lasts beyond the feast day, beyond the twelve days until

February 2nd

, when we mark the Presentation of Christ at the

Temple, Candlemas, as it is sometimes called.

In later life, the temple was to play an important part in Jesus

life. All the gospels record that Jesus taught there regularly,

he challenged the Temple authorities both in terms of their

business practice, over throwing the tables and in their self-

understanding as he prophesied its destruction.

But his first encounter with the temple according to Luke is

when his parents take him to the temple shortly after his birth

for the traditional Jewish practice of purification. Here Jesus is

met by Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:22-38). The older

generation encounters the younger generation and in the

encounter both are blessed.

Something important to me about church when I was bringing

up my children was that they met people of different ages.

Distance meant visits to grandparents were rare; church was a

place that provided the blessing of intergenerational

encounter.

It is still one of the joys of congregations that they can be

places where old and young meet, where relationships across

the years can be nurtured, where mutual love and respect can

grow.

How do older people bring blessing the children in Oakwood

church?

How are the children a blessing to the older people?

Simeon and Anna both praised God for the presence of this

child in whom they recognised the Messiah, the presence of

the Kingdom of God. They took delight in making him

welcome; his presence filled their hearts with joy even though

Simeon at least recognised the dangers ahead (“a sword will

pierce your soul” he says to Mary). Do we older people see the

presence of the kingdom of God in the presence of our

children? Do the children feel recognised and welcomed?

What is the role of parents? I remember feeling quite stressed

when my kids made a noise or asked awkward questions but it

was worth the hassle as the children learned to form

independent relationships across the generations.

As we think about Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Simeon and Anna,

we pray for all the intergenerational relationships in our

church, that they may be a blessing for the individuals, for the

church and for the world.

Kathryn

Stepping on in faith and belonging at church

I would like to gather the people who want to think about their faith journey in relation to the Christian practices of

Baptism, Confirmation and Church Membership, with an

opportunity to decide to participate in one or other or both

of these later in the year.

If you would like to talk through these questions, please do

get in touch with me.

Many thanks, Rev’d George Bailey

Lent 2016

During Lent Christians remember the way that Jesus was prepared by the

Holy Spirit for his time of healing and teaching by 40 days in the

wilderness. We spend 40 days leading up to Easter with a special emphasis

on prayer, fasting, reading the Bible and allowing the Spirit to prepare us to

live well and love others. Here is an explanation of the various ways that we

are gathering together to help each other with this Lenten discipline – at

Oakwood Church and in other places.

Ash Wednesday Service – 10th February, 7.30pm.

We begin the season of Lent with a communion service at which people

may receive a cross on their forehead made with ash. This is a sign of our

repentance, seeking God’s forgiveness, and commitment to Lent

disciplines.

Reading the New Testament in Lent The Caring and Learning Team agreed this year that

we would encourage each other to again read the NT

through Lent. Some of us tried this last year, and

found it very exciting to read the Bible in a different

way to usual. There is a specially produced NT with

the books re-ordered to be a more logical reading of

the texts, and without any notes or verse numbers to

stop your flow. We recommend using these – please

see George if you would like one.

Supporting sessions – meeting together to explore some central ideas in

the New Testament, making sense of what we are reading, and asking what

does all this mean for us today?

7.30pm at Oakwood Church

Weds 24th February God the Son – Who is Jesus? What does his life, death and resurrection

mean?

Thurs 3rd March God the Father – Father of Jews and Gentiles; Father of All?

Thurs 17th March God the Holy Spirit – The exciting life of the Early Church

York Course –

starting 16th February

This is a five session course, with a booklet to use at home. Each session

includes a CD to listen to together with conversation from a variety of

church leaders, and then sharing amongst the group.

This York Course is also running at... Thorner Methodist Church

10am for refreshments with a 10:15am start in the Social Centre.

Starting Monday February 22nd, then for five Mondays, finishing on

Monday March 21st.

Churches Together in Gipton and Oakwood

As well as things happening in Oakwood Church, there are events for Lent

organised by ‘Churches Together in Gipton and Oakwood.’ These are at

one or other of the four churches in this group. Please do come along, and

get to know people from the different churches.

10th March – People on the Move

From the Joint Church Council

Mission Action Planning! What’s happening in 2016?

You may recall that last year the Church Council asked all

groups and individuals about where they felt God was calling

them in the next 3-5 years. All the information was collated

and taken to an Awayday at the beginning of October for the

Church Council to identify some areas that needed particular

work. The process enabled us to see that we are doing some

things well; these include pastoral support, offering a range of

worship including celebrating festivals, having the building

open to community, social activities from harvest supper to

car cleaning, parenting groups, safeguarding, initial welcome

and nurture. All this work will continue and we give thanks to

God for the resources to share in this mission and ministry.

We also gathered a list of opportunities for improvement and

identified gaps from which we prioritised three for focussed

work in 2016.

These are

1. Prayer in the life of the church

2. Diversity, greater inclusion for non-traditional

family groups, e.g. Singles, those without Children,

younger people in their 20’s.

3. Greater Youth participation in decision making

Each of these priorities need to be tackled in different

ways so for “Prayer in the life of the church “we are

looking at a multipronged approach ultimately

overseen by the Caring and Learning team

Ideas include

Evensong... Time to experiment with prayer? Need

to wait for consultation results currently under way

with regard to changes to evensong.

Healing service - continue to develop this service

and variety of prayer within it. How is this offered

elsewhere in the life church?

Kathryn leading on offering series of sessions in

Spring about different ways to pray. (information

about these sessions appears elsewhere in

Broadcast

The second priority “Diversity, greater inclusion for non-

traditional family groups, e.g. Singles, those without Children,

younger people in their 20’s” is a new piece of work so we are

setting up a new task group to listen and lead across all teams

and aspects of church life. Ideas include

Single people - could we have a separate group? Could

we work with other churches?

Need to help existing groups become aware of hidden

barriers?

What about ethnic diversity? Economic diversity? Other

community diversity?

If you are interested in contributing to the task group, please

speak to Kathryn or Anna Sheasby Thomas

We already have some good children and young people’s work

so the third priority “Greater Youth participation in decision

making” involves some members of the Leadership team

having a conversation with the young people at SYNC to

explore what involvement might look like.

Please talk to members of the Church Council if you have

questions or ideas about what’s happening. Please participate

in whatever way you can in furthering these priorities.

Remember everything is set in the context of

Oakwood Church being called to

Increase awareness of God's presence and celebrate

God's love

Help people to grow and learn as Christians through

mutual support and care

Be a good neighbour to people in need

Challenge injustice

Share the good news of Jesus Christ

Teach us to pray

Prayer is integral to our life as Christians. It’s something we

do corporately and individually, we believe it sustains us in all

that we do. Sometimes it’s easy, other times it’s hard. Nothing

beats the practice of praying but exploring different ways of

praying can be helpful whether we’re new to prayer, old timers

or returning after a gap.

Following my article on exploring prayer in the December

Broadcast a couple of people approached me and the best

time so far seems to be Thursday mornings.

So I propose to be in the Sanctuary from 10-11.30 on

Thursday 24th

You are welcome to join us whether or not you responded

initially. There will be coffee, exploration of different ways of

praying and time for prayer.

_________________________________________________________________ Announcement

I am delighted to announce that following her ordination as deacon in

July 2016, Sonia Kasibante will be joining Epiphany and Oakwood

churches as a curate.

Within the Anglican tradition, ordinands spend 2 or 3 years doing a

course of academic studies and placements. They are then ordained to

the diaconate and are placed in a church for three years to continue

their training while getting practical experience and offering their

ministry. This time is known as a curacy and the person involved is a

curate. Sonia will be ordained deacon as she arrives and then some

time later will be ordained priest. This is a different understanding of

ordination to the Methodist practice which has separate pathways for

deacon and presbyter. For those who are curious, please ask about the

different understandings.

Sonia’s husband Amos is parish priest of St Agnes Burmantofts and St

Cyprian’s Harehills. Please pray for them as Sonia prepares for this

next stage of her life and ministry.

Calendars, Diaries and Blogs How can I maintain an appointment diary on my Smartphone,

Tablet or PC so it synchronises across all my devices? Can I

share it with family members’ or colleagues? Can I incorporate

‘Calendars of Events’ published by others?

What is the difference between keeping a personal Diary using

my devices, and writing / publishing a Blog?

Everyone Welcome Refreshments are provided free by group

members but we ask for a donation of £1 towards room costs. Our last meeting will be on 23 March. What would you like to know more about? Please suggest topics by 14 February. More at www.oakwoodchurch.info/ourdigitalworld David Donaldson Tel. 0113 232 3565 [email protected]

Flowers

We are trying to get to grips with the weekly provision, arranging and delivering flowers to people who are experiencing a difficult time. The provision and arranging are well on the way to being sorted, but delivering flowers is still proving a bit of a problem. If anyone ever knows of anyone who is ill, bereaved or going through a difficult time and who would benefit from receiving flowers from Church, could you please ask for a bunch and possibly deliver them on behalf of Church. If you could look on the flower rota, which is at the back of church on the notice board, and ask the person whose name is in the 3rd column for the date in question, they will give you some before you leave.

If this is a problem, or you don’t know who the person is, you could always ask me, Anne Kirkland or telephone me on 2947249.

Thank you, Anne Kirkland

Fond memory of Jack the smiles clock, a shaggy dog story My brother was recently rudely awakened during the night by a loud bang and crash. Fearing a burglary, he crept downstairs to find nothing at all, so back to bed for a fitful sleep. Daytime arrived, back downstairs and no ticking from the Grandfather clock, dad gave him years ago which had kept perfect time, until now opening the door to wind it, he was greeted by a bundle of sprung catgut and a very heavy lead weight pinned to the floor so that's what it was. Wanting to impress “the master” the son was eager to show his prowess at repair, so set to early on a Saturday with a spare gut that dad had provided in case of need but with no instructions! All day long he toiled and sweated to replace old with new. Ha, I will show him he retorted as he placed the key in the slot to wind it up but, something was wrong, no tension and to make matters worse, it had taken much of the day. Oh dear, he had in his eagerness to impress, forgotten the pulley and weight. The rest of day spent dismantling and re assembling again, plus lots of other bad words but, this time it worked and is now keeping perfect time again. Sheepishly he told the story to dad at Grove Park where, dad laughed so much, everyone else joined in it was that infectious. When he calmed down after coughing and spluttering, he said.. why didn't you just unscrew the pulley and thread it onto the catgut, you would have saved hours, schoolboy error. Pauls reply was... why didn't I think of that. So, the old dog could still teach the youngster new tricks. Thanks to everyone who spent time with dad at some time or another, he had a truly wonderful and happy life with family and friends. Always look on the bright side, and treasure those clocks and watches that he once or twice may have “had a quick look at” David & Paul Barstow

Church Family News from Oakwood Church We give thanks for the lives of Vera and Jack Barstow, and for their friendship and service to church and community. We hold their relatives in our prayers. We pray for: Jack and Lindsey Wood, Margaret Wood’s grandson, at this sad time; Also Edgar and Jean Lawson, Paul Spence, Cathy Potter, Muriel and John Mee, and others we know who are ill or unable to attend church services. Congratulations to Bethany Oldfield, daughter of Peter & Lynne, and to Joshua MacDonald – on their recent engagement in Australia on their 6th anniversary as a couple. Most will be aware that our church is helping out with the Night Shelter in Gipton from Monday 1st – Sunday 7th February. Please pray for our helpers as they undertake this vital work, and for the Asylum seekers that they are caring for. Loving God, we ask your blessing upon us all, That sick and well, weak or strong, We might live in the knowledge and trust of you, Through Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen. By Christine Odell

In souls filled with love, the desire to please God is a continual

prayer. God only requires of his adult children, that their hearts

be truly purified and that they offer him continually the wishes

and vows that naturally spring from perfect love. For these

desires, being the genuine fruits of love, are the most perfect

prayers that can spring from it.

St George's welcomes donations of food and toiletries -

principally non-perishable items eg tins of meat, vegetables,

need is sweet corn! Toiletries are also welcome, especially

toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel and disposable razors.

Where do your contributions go?

To the Care Centre where staff provide advice and support

and assist their service users to access housing and skills training options. The Day Centre provides shelter, food,

Christmas Concert

What an evening! “Encore” really entertained us and gave us an

excellent start to the Christmas activities at Oakwood.

The Raffle had many lovely prizes just to add to the evening.

The event raised a magnificent £992.90 for Church Funds (helping us

to replace the now defunct Autumn Fayre).

Thank you to all who helped and made this possible

STAMPS FOR HEARING

DOGS FOR DEAF PEOPLE

Used stamps can help to train these amazing dogs?

Thank you for saving stamps. Please put them in the orange

folders in the New Room and Hall entrance (or drop them off at

83 North Lane). The money raised from these stamps goes to

providing training for a dog, which will bring more security and

friendship to a deaf person.

So, thank you again! We can always do with more stamps, so if

you could collect them, it would raise more money!

It costs you nothing, but can bring help to a deaf person.

Keep Fit - Badminton

It’s been a while now since I played Badminton, but I’m keen to

play again in an attempt to get fit. If anyone is interested in

playing, please let me know! It doesn’t matter if your level is not

that ‘energetic’ as if others are the same, we could book 2

courts! And who knows, we could start another church group!

Thanks, Pete Oldfield (0113 2738930)

Thorner News

Where does the time go? Here we are - in February!

However, I must tell of what occurred at the events that I reported to

you in the Dec/Jan issue. Our Christmas Fayre held on Nov 21st,

thanks to your support, raised a magnificent £435:00 for Thorner

Methodist Church Funds. Without the support of the Oakwood and

Lidgett folk this sum would not have been possible. Thank you SO much

for supporting our fund raising events. We have coffee mornings

scheduled for Sat Jan 23rd for AFC/MHA & on Sat March 12th from 10-

12 noon in aid of The Home/Overseas Missions of the Methodist

Church, both held in our TMC Social Centre. These are very worthwhile

Methodist Charities so do please support us if you can! As usual, Bacon

Butties will be served at these events!

On Sat Dec 13th at 3pm, our Millennium Green Carol service was held in

the Boules centre due to the inclement weather. It was not well

attended as the rain was horizontal! We were fortunate to have the

North Leeds Music Centre playing for us and the Thorner Community

Choir singing with us. Many thanks to them for leading our carol

service.

On Sun Jan 17th at 9:30am, we held our joint Ecumenical Covenant

service with St. Peter's at Thorner Methodists. The service was very

well attended and appreciated by all who came. This service took place

in The Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan 18-25th). It was good

to worship together!

Our next ecumenical event will be our Lent Course which will begin on

Monday Feb 22nd, due to half term, and will run for five weeks, finishing

on Monday Mar 21st. This will be held at Thorner Methodists’ Social

Centre, 10am for refreshments with a 10:15am start. It’s a York

course entitled, ‘The Psalms; prayers for today’s church.’ All are

welcome, so do join us if you can!

With every blessing

Caring for Life

“Caring for Life” is a charity which does just that. Vulnerable

people are taken in and care for – for as long as it’s needed. The

people they help are not on their own from their teens. The

charity is based on Smithy Lane, Cookridge, LS16 7NH. There is

a farm shop. The Granary Café opened some months ago and is

much bigger than the original one. They provide good meals which

Dorothy and I can vouch for having been to lunch there several

times.

Your items and toiletries – which are given so generously – are

very much appreciated so please carry on the good work.

Thank you,

Scottish Country Dance Group

The Scottish Country Dance group continue to meet once a

fortnight on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of every month except

August. We enjoyed a faith supper at the end of the summer

term. The attendances in the Autumn fluctuated from 12 to 20

due to members’ health problems and trips abroad.

We have not celebrated Burns Night for quite a while but we

hope to celebrate at our next session on 20th January, the

nearest Wednesday to Burns Night. Sharon Donaldson has kindly

offered to cook a traditional Burns Night supper of neeps,

tatties and haggis. We are grateful to Sharon for her offer and

all the work it will entail. We hope to thoroughly enjoy the

evening.

Nostalgia – Spoken History group

Our next meeting in The New Room, Oakwood Church we

will reminisce: 4th February - Romance 1.15 until 2.45

Our meetings since October 2015 have been very well

attended and have covered a variety of topics such as The

Cinema, Grandparents, WW2, Schooldays, Hobbies and freetime, Favourite childhood toys, Fashion, Favourite

places.

We only have four more meetings left this term. Romance

4th February, Parenting 18th February, Keeping fit 3rd March,

the last one Gardening 17th March.

We have had the delight of seeing a Kilt, some WW2 war

medals; photographs, cap badges, homemade monopoly

board, plus many more items people like to show the group.

Plus many stories and memories.

The joy of members looking for memorabilia to show, the

discoveries they make along the way, and sharing their experience is very rewarding.

We greatly benefit from being able to use WIFI in our

meetings, being able to show internet finds to those not

familiar with the internet make our meetings even more

interesting.

Please come along. Nostalgia is an Open Meeting and all are

welcome. We only ask for donations of £1 towards room

hire costs. Refreshments are provided and donated by
