February 17th, 2013 1st Sunday of Lent WHEN WE ARE TEMPTED Introduction: The spectacular and the magical are perennial temptations in religion. Believing in an all-powerful God, we look for shortcuts in healing hurts and solving problems. But God does not spare us the labor of learning patience, of conquering selfishness, and of nurturing gen- erosity. We are to work out our own salvation with the aid of Christ. Reading I: The children of Israel were deliv- ered from Egyptian bondage and wilderness wanderings by the miraculous power of God. But they had their role to play in this redemptive drama. Their sufferings were real, their strug- gles were difficult, and successes came through faithfulness to God. Reading II: According to the apostle Paul, those who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. But “calling on the name of the Lord” is not a magical act. It is not achieving desired ends by casting a spell. “Calling on the name of the Lord” is a matter of surrendering one’s entire being to Jesus Christ. Gospel: Jesus’ temptations in the wilderness were a life-and-death struggle over how to es- tablish the kingdom of God. He could have used his divine powers to impress people, to persuade them, or to overwhelm them. Instead, Jesus chose integrity and the way of sacrificial love. Closing Thought: In our struggles with temp- tation the conscience is never an infallible guide, yet it often echoes the voice of Christ and re- veals the will of God. Except where Christ contradicts conscience, s the true vicar of Christ in the soul, a prophet in its information, a mon- arch in its peremptoriness, a priest in its bless- ings or anathemas, according as we obey or disobey it.” Feb. 10th Weekend envelopes (127) $ 3111.00 Weekend Loose $ 146.00 Catholic Times $ 60.00 Church of Europe $ 20.00 Total $ 3355.00 Cemetery Collection $ 75.00 Please call the Church office (532- 5288 or 532-2631) if someone in your family is ill or hospitalized, and you want them visited and brought communion. It even happens that believers, and Chris- tians in particular, are prevented from contributing to the common good by their education and charitable institutions. In order effec- tively to safeguard the exercise of religious liberty it is essential to respect the right of conscientious objection. This ‘Frontier’ of liberty touches upon principles of great importance...rooted in the very dig- nity of the human person. They are, as it were, the “[load-]bearing walls” of any society that wishes to be truly free and democratic.” -Pope Benedict XVI, Address to the Diplomatic Corps, January 7, 2013 In response to particular threats to life and religious liberty, including threats to the rights of conscience in health care, the U.S. Bishops have moved forward with plans to launch a nationwide postcard campaign, “Protect Life and Liberty”. The postcard message focuses on respect for life and reli- gious freedom. Members of Congress are urged to support and strengthen laws that (1) prevent federal funding and promotion of abortion and (2) protect rights of conscience in health care.
