PRESENTER

Teepa Snow Teepa is an occupational therapist working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. She has over 33 years of clinical experience in the field of geriatrics and dementia care, as well as having provided care to family members with dementing illnesses. Currently, she has an independent practice as well as clinical appointments with Duke University’s School of Nursing and UNC-CH School of Medicine. She provides interactive and creative educational and practical hands-on training sessions to organizations and providers throughout the US and Canada. She has been actively involved in teaching and clinical research projects throughout her practice career.

OBJECTIVES:Why Do They Do That?? 8:30 – 10:00 A.M.

1. Recognize selected key differences between dementia and forgetfulness.

2. Identify changes in the brain that result in typical changes in behavior and function.

3. Describe common behaviors that are symptoms of dementia in the areas of memory, understanding, language use, movement and sensation, and impulse control.

4. Recognize effective versus typical caregiver responses to typical behaviors.

Learning How to be an Advocate and Partner 10:15 A.M. - Noon

1. Learners will identify four major categories of activities and engagement for a human being and the value of each when someone has dementia OR is caring for someone with dementia.

2. Learners will use knowledge of progression of the disease and typical behaviors to identify and develop appropriate and effective programming and care for each.

3. Learners will recognize their role as advocates to provide the “right” decisions and interventions for the person based on multiple factors and stage of dementia as well as a variety of other factors.

How to Provide Care for Late Stages and End of Life that Makes Sense for the Person with Dementia 12:45–2:00 P.M.

1. Describe typical conditions of the brain and body of someone with late stages of dementia and their impact on behavior.

2. Describe lost and preserved abilities and skills that result in behaviors that accompany the end of the disease and affect care.

3. Describe techniques for companionship and hands-on assistance and management that will improve cooperation and participation and reduce resistance and refusals.

4. Compare more traditional pain behaviors and responses to late stage dementia behaviors for late stage care.

Spiritual Well Being 2:15 – 3:30 P.M.

1. Define and compare the terms spirituality, religion, faith, traditions.

2. Describe the key aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that impact the person’s ability to maintain their spiritual well-being.

3. Discuss the relationship among observable behaviors, interactions, past history and values, and evidence of need and satisfaction regarding spiritual well-being.

4. Recognize the importance of matching current abilities and skills with historic values and beliefs in creating effective spiritual supports and opportunities.
