UNIVERSITY OF OREGON PUBLIC RELATIONS AND MEDIA 1585 East 13 th Ave Eugene, OR 97403 (541) 3461000 A Daly Dose of Ducks By: Jessica Hales Climbing the stairs of the Lundquist College of Business on September 29, 2014 was a bittersweet moment for Colleen Daly—marking the last first day at the University of Oregon for the entire Daly family. In June 2015, Colleen would be the last of the five Daly children to graduate from the University of Oregon. Sharon and Ed Daly met at the University of Oregon in 1981. The two met while Sharon was attending the University of Oregon as a student and Ed was in town visiting some friends. Ed spent time at the University of Oregon with a college exchange program a few years prior. Sharing mutual friends and both being from Chicago, the two clicked instantly, resulting in a long distance relationship until Sharon graduated. Sharon and Ed later married in Seattle, Wash. “Who knew some crazy family tradition would come out of two strangers meeting and discovering they were both from Chicago at the University of Oregon,” said Sharon Daly, mother to Julia, 26, Sean, 24, twins Danny and Neil, 22, and Colleen, 21. “My parents raised all five of us to value the importance of education, and held us to high standards in our schoolwork, even as young kids,” said Colleen. “I always knew I would get a fouryear degree from a top university.” more

A  Daly  Dose  of  Ducks  By:  Jessica  Hales

Climbing  the  stairs  of  the  Lundquist  College  of  Business  on  September  29,  2014  was  a  bittersweet  moment  for  Colleen  Daly—marking  the  last  first  day  at  the  University  of  Oregon  for  the  entire  Daly  family. Ed  spent  time  at  the  University  of  Oregon  with  a  college-‐exchange  program  a  few  years  prior. “I  always  knew  I  would  get  a  four-‐year  degree  from  a  top  university.”

“I  was  never  pressured  to  go  to  the  University  of  Oregon,  but  I  also  never  imagined  going  anywhere  else,”  she  continued,  “The  University  of  Oregon  holds  some  of  my  earliest  memories.  The  first  time  I  came  here,  I  think  I  was  four,  I  was  attending  my  dad’s  best  friend’s  wedding,  which  was  in  the  Collier  House  [now  a  UO  music  building].”        Growing  up  experiencing  UO  sports  events  and  hearing  each  sibling  tell  crazy  college  tales  at  Thanksgiving  dinner,  Colleen  always  pictured  herself  at  the  University  of  Oregon.  Being  advanced  in  math,  both  in  middle  and  high  school,  Colleen  always  intended  to  go  into  the  business  field,  which  confirmed  her  decision  to  attend  the  University  of  Oregon  for  its  exceptional  business  program.    “The  great  thing  about  Oregon  is  that  each  of  my  siblings  and  I  have  different  majors  and  the  school  still  accommodates  to  all  our  individual  interests,”  said  Colleen.      Colleen  and  her  siblings  not  only  held  value  in  their  academics,  but  also  in  filling  their  time  with  extracurricular  activities  to  optimize  their  college  experience.  Colleen,  Julia,  and  Danny  all  traveled  abroad  during  their  time  at  Oregon—Colleen  and  Julia  in  Sevilla,  Spain,  and  Danny  in  Dublin,  Ireland.  Neil  and  Colleen  have  also  been  a  part  of  the  UO  Greek  life.  Neil  joined  the  Phi  Kappa  Psi  fraternity  in  2011  and  Colleen  joined  Kappa  Kappa  Gamma  sorority  in  2012.  In  2012,  when  Sean,  Danny,  Neil,  and  Colleen  were  all  attending  the  University  of  Oregon  at  the  same  time,  the  four  siblings  made  up  the  majority  of  their  intramural  flag  football  team—making  it  to  the  semi-‐finals.

“My  years  at  the  UO  were  some  of  the  best  of  my  life,  only  to  be  surpassed  by  the  years  I  have  had  the  privilege  of  watching  my  children  have  even  more  amazing  experiences  at  the  very  same  university,”  said  Ed  Daly.      Wrapping  up  with  nearly  a  decade  of  having  children  attend  the  University  of  Oregon,  the  Daly  parents  feel  quite  accomplished—as  they  should.  They  have  a  feeling,  however,  that  the  UO  will  not  end  with  Colleen.

“Ed  and  I  never  intended  to  start  a  family  tradition,  but  the  UO  has  always  brought  great  experiences  and  educational  opportunities  to  our  family,”  said  Sharon.  “June  [when  Colleen  graduates]  will  be  a  bittersweet  moment  for  us  all,  being  the  end  of  the  second  generation  of  Daly’s  at  the  UO,  but  I  have  a  feeling  it  won’t  be  our  last.”      Colleen  is  currently  a  senior  at  the  University  of  Oregon  with  a  major  in  business  and  a  fluent  Spanish  speaker.  Colleen  maintains  a  3.7  GPA  in  the  business  school  and  already  confirmed  a  position  at  MacKay  Sposito,  a  private  engineering  company  in  Camas,  Wash.,  after  she  graduates.
