After two consecutive comedy plays, Carraher wanted to switch things up a bit. I knew I wanted to go heavy on girls in the play because I had a lot of girls, said Carraher. Among the huge group of girls that auditioned was Junior Mattie Phelps, who was cast as Liza, one of the poor bondagers who would fall in love with Kilo, played by Senior Drew DeBolt. After auditioning, getting their roles, and getting to know each other a little better, Phelps and DeBolt found out they had to kiss in one of the scenes. I was thinking it would be funny to kiss Mattie under the circumstances that I didn t know her at all coming into the play, said DeBolt. I wasn t really nervous about it, but Mattie definitely was. Carraher did not give any advice to the pair in the start of rehearsals. She left it up to the student actors to figure out what worked best for them. I honestly freaked out when I found out I had to kiss Drew, said Phelps, "I had never met him or even talked to him prior to the play. At that point, I had never truly kissed anyone but my boyfriend, so I was worried that I was inexperienced. The kiss changed many times throughout rehearsals. It went from Mattie being kissed by Drew, while he dipped her, to having three real kisses, not staged kisses. All their hard work paid off when they won class A state, for the 19th time. - Katelyn Eby Face Time As she prepares for a performance, Jessica Weishahn (14) carefully applies eyeliner. Even the boys that participated in the play were told to wear makeup. The heavy stage makeup was used to prevent the cast members from getting washed out by the bright stage lights. Montemarano won best actress in state; she was the only person in state history to receive this award twice. I went into my senior year thinking that there was no way I could get it again, but I was going to try my hardest anyway; I wanted it so badly. After winning two years in a row, I just feel so blessed and proud of myself and my teammates. Photo By Nate Olsen
