instead being a running backwith sprinter’s speed.

“My eating habits,” Antho-ny Carter, a 6-foot, 275-pounder, said with a heartylaugh. “I like to eat. ... I’ve al-ways been a big kid.”

A big kid and also a finefootball player.

On Saturday against Patri-ot League rival Lehigh,Carter will make his 18thstart in 18 games for theBucknell Bison. He earnedthe starting spot at rightguard as a 17-year-old fresh-man last summer and hasbeen a consistent force forcoach Tim Landis’ programever since.

Saturday’s kickoff is 1 p.m.Bucknell owns a 3-3 over-

all record and the Bison are1-1 in league games. Lehigh is1-5 and 1-0.

“I came in my freshman

year with the mentality Iwanted to earn a spot rightaway,” Carter, No. 59, said.“But I’m a little surprisedhow quickly it came. I feellike now I’m playing well andI really like it here.”

The Freedom alumnus ad-mits his intensity level rises anotch when the Bison squareoff against one of the teams hegrew up following —Lehighor Lafayette.

Carter said Bucknell andLafayette were his final twocollege choices. Leopardscoach Frank Tavani recruitedCarter as a defensive line-man.

Bucknell plays atLafayette next Saturday.

“Really, I just wanted toget away from home and ex-perience something a littledifferent,” said Carter, whoseyounger sister Jasmine is ajunior field hockey player atFreedom. “I definitely likemy decision.”

He believes the Bison —mired in mediocrity for most

of this decade — is close toturning the corner as a pro-gram in Landis’ seventh sea-son at the helm.

Bucknell finished 4-6 aseason ago and is strugglingon offense this year.

“We’re definitely seeingsome potential,” said Carter, one of two freshmen whostarted for the Bison on theO-line last season. “We showglimpses. I feel we’re due fora breakout game offensivelyreal soon.”

At Freedom, Carter alsoexperienced both ups anddowns as the Patriots went acombined 7-13 his sopho-more and junior seasons. Athree-year starter, he then

helped coach Jason Roeder’steam to a 9-3 campaign hissenior year.

Carter also played basket-ball and baseball at Freedom.

Roeder enthusiasticallycalls “A.C.” one of the mostconsistent and gifted playershe has coached.

“We expected Anthony tomake an impact right away,”Roeder said. “He was only 17when he started his first fewgames at Bucknell but he hasa great work ethic and is anoutstanding athlete. Anthonyis real quiet and he’s humble, but he is a heck of a player.”

Like father, like son.Rodney Carter, too, was

only 17 when he started as a

freshman at Purdue.“It’s definitely a shocking

surprise, that first game youplay as a college freshman,”said Rodney Carter, an assis-tant football coach at Free-dom. “My first game wasagainst Stanford and John El-way was the starting quarter-back. So I know what Antho-ny was going through.”

Anthony Carter was bornin 1990 several months afterhis father retired from theNFL. He said most of what heknows about his father’s play-ing days is from watching oldvideotape.

“Not many athletes get toplay college football and evenfewer people make it to theNFL,” Anthony Carter said.“I’m very proud.”

The son probably ranksjust third in the family peck-ing order as far as athleticprowess. No. 1 might be a sur-prise to even Anthony.

“I’ve always conceded tomy wife that she’s the athleteof the family,” Rodney Carter

said. Though Rodney will miss

his son’s game Saturdayagainst Lehigh — Freedomplays Bethlehem Catholic in anight game at BethlehemArea School District Stadium— both mom and dad will bein the stands next week atLafayette.

As important as athleticsare in the Carter household, academics are even more im-portant. Anthony is a chem-istry major at Bucknell pursu-ing a career in either organicor pharmaceutical research.

“He’s a real good studentwho works hard and getsdone what he needs to,” Rod-ney Carter said. “But heknows what’s expected ofhim. My advice to Anthony isalways, if you’re going to getBs and Cs, you can do that atthe community college. It’s alot cheaper.”
