a t l e a s t a few i d e a s of what t h e Food and Drug A d m i n i s t r a -

t i o n d i d . My p a r e n t s were h e r e and wanted me t o come

home.

W . R . M . Wharton was t h e n D i r e c t o r of t h e E a s t e r n

D i s t r i c t . In t h o s e d a y s t h e y had t h e E a s t e r n D i s t r i c t ,

C e n t r a l and Wes te rn D i s t r i c t s and I worked a t t h e New York

S t a t i o n f o r a b o u t f i v e y e a r s . I was t r a n s f e r r e d , a b o u t

1 9 3 4 , t o t h e Bos ton S t a t i o n and a f t e r b e i n g t h e r e f o r a

l i t t l e o v e r a y e a r I was t r a n s f e r r e d and made, t h e f i r s t

R e s i d e n t I n s p e c t o r a t P r o v i d e n c e , Rhode I s l a n d . I was

t h e r e f o r a c o u p l e o f y e a r s and came back t o B o s t o n ,

b r i e f l y , and t h e n I was t r a n s f e r r e d t o t h e C h i c a g o S t a t i o n .

J . 0. C l a r k e was t h e n head o f t h e C e n t r a l D i s t r i c t b u t was

D i r e c t o r a t New York when I was t h e r e .

Schoonove r : In t h e Ch icago S t a t i o n I h a n d l e d t h e d r u g work

f o r a w h i l e , c o l l e c t e d hundreds and hundreds o f s a m p l e s

f rom a l l o v e r t h e p l a c e . Then I went o u t on a Cream

Improvement Program t o Omaha and worked a c r o s s , back and

f o r t h t o Nebraskia, Kansas , Oklahoma and A r k a n s a s and t h e n

back t o C h i c a g o a g a i n . A l s o many i n s p e c t i o n s were made of

t o m a t o f a c t o r i e s . I had done a l o t o f c a n n i n g work i n t h e

New York S t a t i o n when I was t h e r e . In t h o s e d a y s t h e New

O n one o c c a s i o n I was a s s i g n e d t o work on t h e s h o r t

we igh t pound p r i n t s o f b u t t e r . I worked a f u l l summer on

d o i n g m o s t l y t h a t , t r a v e l i n g t o e v e r y b u t t e r d e a l e r and any

p l a c e t h a t had any amount of b u t t e r , w i t h a G u r l e y b a l a n c e .

The b u t t e r v e n d o r s were l o c a t e d , a b o u t a h a l f a dozen o r

more, i n New York C i t y . They would s h i p t o J e r s e y , d e a l e r s

would phone i n and want s o many c a s e s . W e l l , t h e y would

a lways t r y t o d e l i v e r , i f a 6 4 pound t u b was o r d e r e d , t h e y

would a lways t r y t o d e l i v e r 64 pounds . B u t you know i t was

i m p o s s i b l e b e c a u s e when you s q u e e z e i t ou t you have some

w a t e r d r i p p i n g o u t of t h e mach ine , t h e r e i s a l w a y s a l i t t l e

l o s s . O n one o c c a s i o n t h e d e a l e r i n i n v o i c i n g New J e r s e y

showed t h e o v e r a g e o f two pounds.
