STATEMENTOFPURPOSE ChildDevelopmentandParentingisdesignedforstudentswhoplantoworkwithchildrenintheircareersand/orwhowillbecomeparentsinthefuture.Studentswillstudytheearlystagesofchildhoodfromtheprenatalstagethroughagefive.Theywillexplorethephysical,social,emotional,andintellectualdevelopmentofchildrenandanalyzedevelopmentally-appropriatebehaviorsandactivities.Studentswillexamineparenthoodreadinessandparentingskills,suchas:discipline,communication,planningactivities,anddealingwithproblems.Opportunitieswillbeprovidedtoworkwithchildrenthroughcommunityserviceprojects.Separatelyweassessstudentstogaugeprogressandinforminstruction.Benchmarkassessmentsforstudentsingrades9through12areadministeredintheformofamidtermandfinalexamforfullyearcourses.*SpecialNote:Onlyfinalexamsareadministeredattheendofquartercoursesandsemestercourses.
RATIONALE Thiscoursehasundergonesignificantchangesoverthepasttwodecades.Childdevelopmentandparentinghavebeenthesubjectsofresearch inseveral disciplines. In sociology, psychology, and education, researchers have presented new information about the changing American family,developmentalneedsofchildrenatdifferentstages,societalpressuresonandsupportsforparentslivingfarfromextendedfamilies,andonlearningtheory. This course is alignedwith theNEW JERSEYSTUDENTLEARNINGSTANDARDS for21stCentury Life andCareers (NJSLSS), theNEW JERSEYSTUDENTLEARNINGSTANDARDSforTechnology(NJSLSS),theNEWJERSEYSTUDENTLEARNINGSTANDARDSforComprehensiveHealthandPhysicalEducation(NJSLSS),andtheCommonCoreStateStandardsforEnglishLanguageArtsLiteracyinScienceandTechnicalSubjects(CCSS).

THELIVINGCURRICULUM Curriculumguidesaredesignedtobeworkingdocuments.Teachersareencouragedtomakenotesinthemargins.Writtencommentscanserveasthe basis for future revisions. In addition, the teachers and administrators are invited to discuss elements of the guides as implemented in theclassroomandtoworkcollaborativelytodeveloprecommendationsforcurriculumreformsasneeded.
