Senior Prefects 2015 The Senior Prefects are elected each year by the Sixth Years. This year there are five girls and five boys. The Prefects elect a Head Girl and Head Boy from their members. Regular meetings take place with their Mentor, Ms. Íde O’Shaughnessy, to discuss a wide variety of issues relating to school life. A Senior Prefect is expected to give good example in class and around the school with regard to school rules, behaviour, punctuality, uniform, etc. They are asked to be alert for vulnerable students and potential difficulties; to notify the principal of any breakages or damage to school property; taps left running in the toilets, etc. Each Prefect is assigned to a specific 2nd Year class. The Prefect develops a relationship with the class and acts as liaison between Dean of Year / Form Teacher and class, e.g. encouraging class participation in school events. Among their other duties the Prefects represent the student body to school guests and at events outside the school and are responsible for the organisation of the End of Year Mass and the Debs Ball.

Meitheal Leaders 2015/2016 In F.C.J. Bunclody the Meitheal Programme is advertised among 5th Year students who are invited to apply. All applicants are interviewed and the students chosen to become Meitheal Leaders undergo a training programme in the summer prior to their return to school in Septem-ber. This training programme covers the areas of personal development, identity, self-esteem, communication skills, listening skills, assertiveness skills, group dynamics, group management and many other skills that are necessary for the students to develop if the programme is to be successful. After their training the students return to the school as 6th years and are given responsibility for a number of incoming 1st years. The Meitheal Leaders ensure the smooth transition of 1st Years into the school and are available to assist them in any way necessary dur-ing their first few days in school. After this initial work they work with the junior students, developing a relationship of trust and mutual respect. If a junior student should experience difficulties or anxieties of any kind they can turn to their Meitheal Leaders and find in them under-standing, respect, advice and assistance. In this school the programme has proven to be very effective in promoting the happiness of students in general as well as reducing instances of bullying and isolation.

They help to create a con-nection between students and the FCJ staff. They work hard to promote the welfare and interests of the student body. Each class has a representative to communicate with the Student Council on topics relating to school life. This year’s elections were held on the 8th of October. Each student who was nominated had the opportunity to give a speech to win votes. The Council’s Mentor is Ms. Mary McIvor.

First Year Parent Meetings Every year the parents of each 1st Year class are invited in to meet
school management, the Dean and the class Form Teacher in an effort
to ensure that students benefit fully from what the school offers. Ms.
Threadgold, Principal, opened each meeting and outlined how the
school works. She told parents that she had met each 1st year class
and talked to them about homework and organising their time properly;
the Meitheal Leaders involved with each class explained their role in
helping the new students adjust to secondary school; the S.E.N. Co-
ordinator, Ms. Louise Kenny, outlined her role and spoke about the
assistance given to students who need help with their studies; the
class Form Teacher spoke on topics such as the pastoral care system
and various structures in the school. Finally, the Dean of Year, Mr.
Brendan Daly (Deputy Principal) gave parents an idea of other areas
which are helpful to students such as the Anti-Bullying campaign,
“Healthy Eating”, “Active Schools project” and addressed any
concerns parents had. The ePortal system was one of the things
talked about this year. The meetings took place in the Convent in the
afternoon from the 29th of September to the 5th of October. Near the
end of each meeting the students from the class were brought over to
have tea with their parents and to introduce them to their new friends.
Because the numbers in our school have gone up so much—to 815 (414 girls & 401 boys), there is now a sixth 1st Year class, which is called Marie I. Marie was one of the names of the F.C.J. Society Foundress, the Venerable Marie Madeleine d'Houët.
Active Schools
The First and Second years are performing exercises at Break time for the Active Schools programme. Beep tests for First, Second and Fourth years were completed in September in the HWH Bunclody G.A.A. Complex and will be repeated at the end of the year to see how much they have improved. First years have also completed two five kilometre runs and had an active fun day. All of this activity is being done so that we will continue to hold the Active Schools Flag which was awarded to our school earlier this year.
CRN Championships Clodagh Kehoe from Ballindaggin, who did her Leaving Cert. here in June, participated in the U18 Cumann Rince Náisiúnta Irish Dancing Championships in Castlebar, Co. Mayo recently. Congratulations to Clodagh who won first place in her age category.
European Youth Boxing
Saoirse Dignam from Ferns, who also did her Leaving Cert. here in June, defeated the world number 3, Yulia Stojko of the Ukraine, in the European Youth boxing championships in Keszethly, Hungary. Saoirse repre-sented Ireland in the Welterweight Division. She took home the bronze medal, which was a fantastic achieve-ment. Well done Saoirse! Her sister Sadhbh is in Aidan IV.
