heythere.

Dear Heroes and HITs

You have proven yourself to be part of the Freshman Care Committee! I’m sure to most, it has been agitating you to give back to the freshmen and let them have the warmest welcome to the Ateneo Residence Halls. Your ARSA OrSem is done, and now it’s time to let them experience the same fun you did as a freshie. To most, this will be a new experience. Waking up at 5 in the morning. Running around during amazing race. Watching the freshies be scolded at by the authorities instead of being the one in their shoes. This experience may change others as it will hope-fully allow you to get to know yourselves more as you learn to be an inspiration to your freshies. This dedication for two weeks, will undeniably test your physical and emotional strength and it will tire you out. However, you won’t be alone. To the Heroes, you will have HITs to train, fall back on, and to inspire you to do better than what you did last year. To the HITs you will have your heroes to be your role models and also help you in whatever you need. That aside, we are all one ARSA family, more importantly, one FCC. A freshman care committee that will be there to help you when you need to. It may sound cliché when it’s all about family, but it’s true! We’ve seen you guys hyped up through posts, and let you go through interviews doing silly things and waking up at 5 in the morning. We’ve chosen you guys because we know that you know the value of strength in others and allowing yourselves to be there for the freshmen. ARSA OrSem as you all know has one and only one pri-mary goal: welcome the freshies into the family that we all live in now. Give them an ARSA OrSem they will never forget!

what is a hero?

Based on all the superhero movies you have watched, you have an initial idea what heroes are supposed to do. Because you don’t have the strength of a thousand men or the ability to fly, you are only called HEROES, but of course you can be super in your own way by saving the dorm and all its traditions. As the years pass, older and more tradition-immersed dormers graduate and leave our premises. It is your job to ensure that our ARSA traditions do not leave along with the graduates and die out by instilling them into the newest members of our community as best as you can. You are the older brothers and sisters of the incoming freshmen batch and they will look up to you for your guidance, support, and wisdom for the duration of OrSem.

AS HEROES, YOU: * Assigned to a group of 16 freshies (2 rooms from Cervini and 2 rooms from Eliazo)

* Motivate and inspire the freshies*Act as energetic and hyper a-la-OrSem TnTs*Must be present in ALL OrSem events*Decide sanctions: Heroes, not Authorit ies, wil l choose what sanctions to give their freshies and report them to FCC Heads*Check al l bangs/claps beforehand - make sure that no two freshies in an FCC has the same or similar bangs/claps

* Check SigSheet Signing costumes beforehand - make sure that it is well-worked for

* Facil itate Processing Sessions

*Complete the checklist for sanctions everyday

* Count the points in SigSheet Signing along with FCC Heads during SigSheet Signing Week

* Are directly accountable for their own HITs

* Ingrain into the frehies the four principles of ARSA

* Integrity, Solidarity, Service, and Accountabil ity

* Report to the FCC Heads/Top 4 for any concerns/suggestions

what is a hit?

HIT is actually an acronym for Heroes-In-Training, and that’s ex-actly what being a HIT is all about. This is first-hand experience in preparation in becoming a Hero in the next OrSem. You are like sidekicks of the Heroes but this should not stop you from leading as well. You are tasked to be with the freshies in every step of ARSA OrSem, from fetching them from their rooms for the First Encounter until the last event which is Salubong. You were chosen specifically because the Top 4 saw the inner Heroes in you and you need to undergo training to fully express your heroic capacities.

AS HiTs, YOU: *Assist the Heroes in everything

* Are in-charge of the mobil ization of the freshies

* Are in-charge of waking them up starting 5:30am and having them ready by 6am every day during SigSheet Week

* Help the Heroes in faci l itating, especial ly during Processing Sessions after SigSheet Signing

* Document/bring a camera ALL THE TIME

* Take care of al l responsibi l it ies of the Hero if ever the Hero is unavailable

* Report to the FCC Heads if there are concerns regarding the Heroes. This is unlikely, but if you encounter problems, do not be hesitant to approach Dada or Nino. * Should be informed of the basics of First Aid

HEROES / HITS SHOULD NOT: * Act as an authoritarian

* Forget his/her responsibi l it ies, give half-hearted and rushed processing sessions. Disregard the rules set by the dorm, init iate unfriendly competit ion with other FCCs. * Be passive.

* Leak out important information vital to the succ- essful stories

* Bad mouth OrSem in any way!

firstencounter

This is your first chance to encounter your FCC group made up of two rooms from Cervini and from Eliazo. In-troduce yourselves, them to each other and hype them up for OrSem! Without leaking too much, of course, start getting to know your kids and make sure they have a harmonious relationship with their FCC-mates as well. It wouldn’t hurt to bring in snacks or anything you think will help break the ice! SUGGESTED PLAN: * Coordinate beforehand to ensure they wil l be there during the f irst event. * Go to their rooms to personally ask them to meet you at your HQ at your specif ied time * Meet and Greet! Break the ice! Do GD’s! * Start mentioning Variety Show practices and schedules.

REMINDERS: * Introduce yourself clearly and define your role in OrSem assure them that you are there to help them in their introduction to the dorm

* Ask if they have their primers

* Remind them of the dates of the events

* Help open up those who are shy/reserved by showing a positive outlook that they can approach you anytime

* Exchange contact numbers. Get their birthdays. Don’t forget anyone.

* Take note of important info for the events * starts at 8pm

TIME ACTION POINT PEOPLE

REMINDERS: * Don’t tel l the freshmen that the Authorit ies are just acting or actually nice. We need to preserve the image of the Authorit ies so that they’l l st i l l be ef-fective as Authorit ies, especial ly for the communal post-processing.

* Afterwards, when the freshmen have been dismissed, please gather them at your designated HQ’s and see if they’re agitated, disturbed, scared, etc. If so, then inform them that the Authorit ies are there to make sure that everybody does the right things, that they’re there to protect the freshmen even from themselves.

PRODThe Pre-OrSem Display is first event of ARSA OrSem and it’s supposed to educate the freshies about what OrSem is all about. We don’t want PROD to be boring and simply forgotten, so this year, we’ve got a produc-tion all lined-up for the freshies! With this year’s event named as ‘The First Frontier’, PROD is divided into two parts: the group dynamics and the play.

june 25

Part I. Group Dynamics - Cervini FieldPart II. Play - Leong Hall AuditoriumTIME - 5:30-9:00

For HEROsSeveral weeks before PROD:Prepare costumes for the Fashion Show. Please take note that our venue is Leong Hall Auditorium. We have to take care of the ven-ue, so make sure the costumes you prepare aren’t messy. Nothing with anything that will make a mess like wet paint, loose glitter, etc. Be sure to make your costumes a week ahead of PROD.

For Everyone (Pre-Event):The freshies have class until 4:30 pm. Call time for PROD is at 5:30 and PROD will end at around 8:30 pm, give or take. Before they assemble at Cervini Field at 5:30 pm, make sure that they have al-ready eaten. We encourage HITs and HEROES to invite their FCCs to eat together as a pre-event bonding session just to get things started before the actual group dynamics. If you want to spend for your freshies, that would be great. You don’t have to if you don’t want to though :) By 5:30 pm, assemble the freshies at Cervini Field (or the Recroom if it rains).

During the event: Make sure the freshies are wearing their IDs. You will facili-tate all of the GDs. The first GD is the name game. Have a rundown of names, courses, provinces. Do this a couple more times. Divide your fresh-ies into two sub-teams and make them face opposite directions. Choose one freshie from each sub-team and count to three to make them face each other. When they face each other, they should be able to say the other’s name, course and province. Do this until everyone gets their turn. The second GD is called “Footprints on the Moon”. Lis-ten to the host for their prompt. Make your freshies form a circle. There are a total of 32 feet in each FCC. The host will say, “I want to see ____ footprints on the moon” and each FCC will make sure that the number stated by the host is the number of feet seen on the ground. Make sure only the desired number of feet touches the ground. The last GD is the making of the spaceships to be used for Amazing Race. You are given materials per FCC and you must use it to make the spaceship that will serve as your lifeline for the Amazing Race. Help and assist your freshies in this task. By 7:00 pm, HEROES must leave their FCCs and begin to assemble along the pathway where the freshies will pass to get to Leong. Ideal path: Cerv Field - Berch - Kostka - MVP - Leong If there are classes ar Berch: Cerv Field - Xavier - Faber - Leong

Once you get to Leong, HITs will seat their freshies accord-ing to the seat plan. HEROES must automatically get changed into their respective costumes and wait outside Leong until it’s their cue (Scene 5). During the fashion show scene, HITs can encourage their FCCs to cheer for their HEROES. HEROES will come from the back of Leong and descend (yes, descend) down the steps onto the stage. Since there are usually two HEROES per costume day, once you get to the stage, stay there and the host can interview you or critique your fashion sense (haha jk) and can even ask you to do your bang/clap. You cannot refuse to do your bang and clap. This is to encourage your freshies not to be shy with their own bangs and claps come sigsheet signing week. Once the host is done interviewing you, you will exit by climbing up the steps back to the back of Leong, but you’ll climb up the steps you didn’t use when you entered.

Welcome Dinner: Among the Stars is a semi-formal acquaintance dinner for the freshmen. It is an opportu-nity for the freshmen to meet not only fellow freshmen but also the alumni, schooladministrators, resident ad-visers and faculty members. The trivia games that shall be facilitated by the chosen hosts and the prepared speeches by chosen alumni and resident adviser will create an interactive atmosphere for the guests.

HITS & HEROES REMINDERS: * All the Heroes and Hits from each FCC should pick up the Freshies from Cervini/Eliaze at exactly 5:45pm.

*Make sure the Heroes and Hits remind the freshman to bring their ID’s, to wear them at al l t imes during the event and to avoid using their ID’s as tables, fans, etc. * Heroes and Hits must bring the Freshies to the MVP entrance facing Kostka Extension by 6pm. Hits wil l leave after dropping the freshies.

* Once arriving at the entrance of MVP(the one facing Kostka Exten-sion, not MVP basement), Freshies wil l be ushered by the core team and the Heroes in their randomized seating arrangement

june 26

WHEN: June 26, 2014, 6:30-9:00pmWHERE: MVP Roof deckWHO: Freshmen, AFORS, School Ad-ministrators, Resident Advisers, and Faculty Members

* Only 1 Hero per FCC is al lowed to stay in the venue, they wil l be tasked to walk around and help the Freshies mingle with one anoth-er (Heroes may opt to sit in unoccupied seats to faci l itate interac-tion within the table). The other Heroes may opt to stay within the vicinity except in the roof deck due to space l imitations.

*There is no assurance the Heroes can eat dinner unless there is ex-tra food, so please eat ahead.

*Lastly, please only make creative noise, not disruptive noise. Exam-ple would be huddling at the back and talking loudly or forgetting your duty to help the freshman mingle and help them enjoy.

The Variety Show is a relaxed night full of games and performances. Just like journey, the most memorable aspect of the variety show is not the show itself but build-up that leads to the show. There are many op-portunities for people to interact with other people from the other FCC during the planning to the execu-tion of the performances. They’ll need to communicate with one another to be able to make a wonderful per-formance but some are very hesitant about speaking or voicing out their opinions, so the H&H should help them.

* HiTs will dance as part of the program

Space exploration is no joke. It’s necessary to have ex-tensive training before facing the rigors of space travel. For this we have prepared an intense x-hour training course to prepare the freshmen to something some-thing orbit. In this training course are all the skills the freshmen might need for space travel.

sigsheet* At 5:30 am, HiTs will wake up the freshmen, while the heroes claim the sigsheets.

* By 6:00 am, everyone gathers at their respective headquarters and discuss what needs to be done. H&H will help freshmen fill out some info on the sigsheet. (should be done by 6:30-7:00)

* Sigsheet starts at 9:00 am and ends at 4:30 pm

* HiTs are to facilitate the mobilization from the Cerv Driveway to the recroom by the time sigsheet ends. * Heroes are to collect all sigsheets and head to the Aerie to tally up the signatures, and decide on the pun-ishments for the freshies. (substandart costumes, did not reach quota, etc.)

* By 5:30 - 6:00, everything should be done, including the authority talk

* Post processing at HQ after every authority talk.

june 30-july 4

HITS & HEROES REMINDERS: *The freshmen wil l be wearing sports attire for the event. Running shoes are a must.

* HITs wil l be running with their FCC. It wil l be your job to hype the freshmen up and keep them moving during the race.

* Injuries are l ikely. Medics wil l be abundant during the event.

* Ask the freshmen to prepare water bottles with their names on them. This wil l be for the rest stations.

Salubong is the culminating event of the Freshmen Orientation Seminar. It is the climax of every fresh-man’s ARSA OrSem experience. This night serves as a significant rite of passage wherein the batch must go through one final obstacle before they are inducted as rightful and official members of the ARSA community. “Salubong,” being the tagalog word for welcoming, is our way of receiving the freshmen into our family.

salubong july 4

TASKS:Pre-Salubong:Volunteers’ GA (JUNE 28, TBA) – At least 2 HiTs of every FCC must be present to be oriented about the different stations and remind-ers so that dry run during Re-ignite (JULY 2) will be smoother and more efficient.

Dry Run (JULY 2, Cervini Hall) – This will be during Re-ignite. Make sure to download the floor plan and station guides beforehand. Heroes will stay with their FCC ‘s at the Cervini Recroom while HiTs will represent their FCC’s during the dry run.

Drums – Tell their FCC that they need to make improvised instru-ments for Salubong. Collect during Re-ignite and let the HiTs keep them for safety. Instruments may be simple but a little more effort will be appreciated.

During Salubong:Briefing – Be there on time and (1) get envelopes containing bal-lots for OrSem awards and colored papers for the letters, (2) re-view program flow and designated traffic for the obstacle course, and (3) get additional reminders from heads

Final FCC Processing – (1) Facilitate processing, ask the desig-nated processing questions, (2) Give ballots and ensure everyone casts their votes (up for grabs: Friendliest Eliazoan/Cervinian/

Upperclassmen, Eliazo/Cervini/Upperclass Crush), (3)Make them write a letter addressed to themselves 4/5 years from now, (4) and make sure everyone has blindfolds and pens

Mobilization to recroom and from recroom when signalled

Monk’s Meal – Review Monk’s Meal guidelines and play your roles in a somber mood as much as possible. Be silent and just position yourselves near your FCCs unless tasked to do otherwise.Monk’s Meal Processing – Discipline your FCC, make them listen to Sir Tats and ponder on the processing questions

Monk’s Meal Processing – Discipline your FCC, make them listen to Sir Tats and ponder on the processing questions

Real Meal – Don’t help the Freshmen, let them do the food distri-bution by themselves. Do not try to suggest sharing (they must be able to think of it by themselves. When offered food, accept respectfully and show appreciation, but try to eat as little as pos-sible (because there won’t be much food).

Drum Task – HiTs distribute the instruments collected, attend to the needs of their Freshmen (C.R., Water, Emergency. NO ONE CAN GO OUT OF THE RECROOM before permitted.)

Obstacle Course – HiTs and Heroes will guide the Freshmen so they must be aware of the traffic flow and of the mechanics of the different stations. Make sure Freshies don’t take off blindfolds and don’t get any untoward injuries (especially when going up/down the stairs!).

Regroup Freshmen – Make the freshmen face the Cervini Quad still with their blindfolds on. When everyone’s settled, go down as quick as possible.

Behold ARSA + “Party” – Assemble in Cervini Quad and welcome the Freshmen in the most awesome way possible. Be wild (but not too wild).

Picture Taking – Make sure your FCC comes up quickly once you are called to

Basa-basa Surprise – Bring waterguns. We start wetting the fresh-ies after their batch picture. We need A LOT of energy from you in this part of the program.

HiTs & HEROES REMINDERS:* Freshmen should be wearing their OrSem shirts and IDs during the whole event

* Remind them to prepare blindfolds and pens beforehand, and make sure they bring and use them on the event day

* Really important: Make sure you’re aware of the program flow, the traffic for the obstacle course, and the mechanics for each sta-tion (attend the GA, please!). Also, make sure you know were the medics will be stationed and who the point persons are for each activity (listen carefully during the briefing!)

*Help hype up the freshies days before the event. Tell them that their Salubong experience would be awesome and would be one that they’ll never forget, of course, without leaking/spoiling the significant details of the event.
