Recently, Community High School’s very own Student Council hosted an area workshop for all of the student councils in Middle Tennessee. This was possible because Gracie Miles ran for a state officer of Middle Tennessee, and one of her duties of this position was to host the workshop. Many weeks, days, and hours were put into hosting this by student council representatives, advisors, faculty and staff of Community High School. Zachary Lohn exclaimed, “We had spent many hours pre-paring for this day, and when it finally came, we were all very ecstatic for it to begin!” On September 22, the day began early. Student Council arrived at school at 7:00 a.m. Everyone was very excited to see all of the hard work that was put into the decorations pay off. At 8:00 a.m., all of schools started to arrive. Eight schools were represented in the 179 students filling the bleachers. The program started off with Student Council cheers, and then the guest speaker shared her part. The guest speaker was Grace Binagm. From the Make-a-Wish foundation, she talked about leaders and what makes them great. After she finished speaking, everyone dismissed to their sessions. There were 14 sessions about different activities that happen at our school: For example, Homecoming, B.I.O.N.I.C. week, Spirit Cups, and Banners. Most of the sessions were hosted by Community, but some were hosted by Shelbyville Central, Marshall County, and Giles County. At the end of the day, everyone went back into the gym and played a rac-ing game. The winner of the game was Marshall County. Overall, everyone was so excited and pleased to see all of their hard work come together for asuccessful workshop.

Pumpkin Spice >>> By: Jewel Hewitt Pumpkin spice is now known as one of the most popular, seasonal

flavors in America, but how did this legendary flavor get its start? According to Erica Sloan’s article on the origin of Pumpkin Spice, it started out with the trading of a sour spice from northern Mongolia. When trading wasn’t very successful, many merchants added Cinnamon to the blend and ended up with a very early form of Pumpkin Spice.

Today, Pumpkin Spice is an American favorite. Every year, Starbucks Coffee makes a $100,000,000 in profit during the fall season, all because of their famous “Pumpkin Spice Latte.” What is it that makes this flavor so popular? All it contains is a blend of Cinnamon, Clove, Nutmeg, Ginger, and sometimes actual pumpkin.Maybe it’s nostalgia, or maybe it’s genuinely as good as everyone says itis. All we can say for sure is that whatever it is, people love it!

We all dread our junior year because of all the constant testing, ACT preparation, and the provoking of maturity (along with the added stress of having to raise enough money for prom so that you don’t let down the class ahead of you.) However, with people such as Mrs. Ralston, Mrs. Beech, and Mrs. Lemmons, raising money is as easy as selling flowers, literally.

This year’s mum sale was very successful with 985 flowers sold, beating last year’s record by 185 mums. While the mum sale was successful, prom tickets will not be free due to the way the money has to be split between graduation and prom. The prom committee would like to thank everyone who came out to help the unloading of the truck go smoothly. We are excited to see what the junior class comes up with this year for prom!

Leadership Bedford>>>

Leadership Bedford. What is it? Leadership Bedford is an organization of young students throughout Bedford County from Community, Cascade, and Shelbyville Central High Schools. The program is based off of showing the selected group of students new leadership skills that they can apply in the future and allowing them the chance to find out more about Bedford County.

This year, nine students from Community were selected: Logan Brothers, Grayson Garrette, Gabby Hunt, Anna Katherine Lemmons, Zachary Lohn, Ana Ragland, Gracie Simmons, and Jaley Vincent. In fact, the 2017-2018 class is the largest Leadership Bedford class that Community has ever had!

On top of being a member, our very own Jaley Vincent is Vice President! On the day of elections, Jaley was super excited to accept her role in such a prestigious organization.

Quotes...

By: Grayson Garrette, Zachary Lohn, Ana Ragland

When she was asked how she feels about such a position, she answered “Getting an opportunity to serve as Vice President of the Youth Leadership Bedford is such an honor and such a big responsibility to take on. However, I feel very prepared and excited to take on this exciting challenge. I’m very ecstatic to be apart of this because it will improve my leadership skills and also my work ethic. Being a part of Leadership Bedford will further my knowledge about Bedford County other companies, and how these companies work. I can’t wait to pursue this exciting adventure, and I hope to excel in any way possible in Leadership Bedford.”

Region Tournament>>>

“I was disappointed that I didn’t make the State; however, it was a great year, and I am extremely excited for Hannah! I am looking forward to improving my game, and hopefully our whole team will be in the State next year.” Community High School golfer Grayson Garrette reflects on his recent Region Tournament match. Grayson Garrette shot an 82 on the day, missing the cut for the State Tournament by two strokes. Hannah Goodwin also qualified for the Region 5 Tournament; she shot an 83 on all 18 holes. This score was the second best in the whole Region! Hannah was one of the four individual qualifiers from the Region, sending her to the State Tournament for the first time in vikings’ history! We would like to extend congratulations to all golfers this year, and we send the best of luck to Hannah as she is about to have an in State Tournament!

Top 10 Scary Movies

The month of October is the perfect atmosphere for getting scared or scaring people. Below, in no specific order, are some of the scariest movies to watch yourself or with friends!

1. The Exorcist2. Psycho

3. Ringu 4. The Shining 5. The Blair Witch Project 6. The Babadook 7. The Nightmare on Elm Street 8. Friday the 13 9. The Grudge 10. The Strangers

Though It is classified as a horror movie, it actually contains some rather humorous parts. Throughout the film, Pennywise takes multiple forms to fit each child’s individual fear. He can morph into his target’s loved one or friend to lure them into traps or just simply appear to them as their worst fears and nightmares. Though he has the ability to consume any type of human, Penny prefers children because they are easily scared and manipulated.

It ReviewDISCLAIMER! CONTAINS

SPOILERS!!

According to the creature himself, “Frightened flesh tastes better.” The movie makes subtle hints toward the original book by adding the recurring theme of turtles. Bill holds the turtle that he and Georgie made at one point and then proceeds to drop it when he has a vision of Georgie in the hallway.

Then, while swimming, Ben points out that there’s a turtle under the surface of the water. This ties into the actual book because the “Turtle” is what originally persuades the children to defeat Pennywise. The producer of It didn’t include the whole backstory of the turtle theme into the movie because they would have had to go into a whole other story within the movie. Overall though, I really enjoyed the movie. After reading the book and the movie did not disappoint.

According to Devin Bousum of the Junior class, “ The movie had a good storyline and great graphics with some terrifying jumpscares.”

8

Haylie Parker of the Junior class said, “ I didn’t think it was very scary. The original movie is so much better.”

Finally, Ashley Sanders of the Senior class said, “ It was really good and had some scary moments in it.”

Sometimes it’s the Simple Things in Life

Campbell>>>Dear Campbell,

I am moving far away, too far to see my girlfriend of nine months. I don’t have a phone, so that makes things harder. Do you think handwritten notes can keep it alive for the next two years?

Sincerely,

Keepin’ It Alive

Dear Keepin’ It Alive,

You can always keep in touch with computers and other technology, but if that doesn’t work out, there’s always good old-fashioned letters! I wish you two the best of luck!

Sincerely,

Campbell

Fall is officially here, and with the changing seasons comes all kinds of simple things for us to enjoy – football, television season premieres, the leaves changing colors, less humidity, campfires, etc. Fall also typically marks the beginning of cold and flu season, and many people find themselves asking what they can do to keep from getting sick. Of course, it’s highly recommended that everyone gets a flu shot to help prevent the flu specifically. What about all the other germs out there that can make us sick. We have all been taught for years about keeping our hands away from our face (this includes rubbing your eyes, picking your nose, putting your fingers in your mouth, and scratching your ears). We know that we need to keep all cuts and scrapes covered until they are healed, and we have learned how to cover our coughs and sneezes with either our elbows or a tissue. We should also be sure and stay at home if we are sick, that we don’t spread it to other people. However, even though all of these are really good things to do, research has proven that the number one way to keep yourself from catching germs and getting sick is very simple: That is good and effective handwashing.

Most people admit to washing their hands often during the day, but is it done effectively? Here are some tips for good and effective handwashing:

● Wash with warm water and plenty of soap● Scrub every surface of your hands (top and palms, in between fingers, under

fingernails, and wrists) – scrub for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the “Alphabet Song” or the “Happy Birthday” song twice)

● Rinse every bit of soap off your hands● Use a paper towel to cut off the water● Dry your hands with a clean paper towel

It is a good idea to always wash your hands before you are going to eat something, after you use the restroom, before cooking, before and after giving first aid, after blowing your nose, if your hands are visibly dirty, or just if you think about it throughout the day. You should also wash your hands if you have been touching dirty things, such as pencils, door knobs, money, cell phones, computers, gaming devices, sports equipment, etc. If you don’t have access to a sink with soap and water, use a hand sanitizer such as Germ-X.

It doesn’t sound too complicated, right? We just have to remember to not only wash our hands, but wash them effectively. Let’s all take the time to do a very simple thing so that we can stay healthy and enjoy all the things that this season has to offer! -Nurse Jill

Scary Story>>>

Fun Facts…

By: Jireh Von Dran

Senior, Karla Pena, said, “An octopus can fit through a hole the size of a dime!”

Teacher, Mr. Brown, said, “ Pumpkin spice, knows no gender.”

Vice principal, Dr. Williams, said, “By the age of 35, 66% of men are bald and by 55, 85%are bald.”

I used to have an imaginary friend named Tommy. He lived in the attic of my old house, and we would play with each other every single day. I didn’t have many friends, and my brother never played with me. Only Tommy would play with me, but he said he would only play if it was in the attic. My mother didn’t seem to care, and my dad was always at work; so, I would go into the attic after school and play with Tommy.

I remember my dad had cameras set up in the corners of the attic so he could keep an eye on me while he was at work. I didn’t think those cameras would come in handy. I remember the day of the incident very clearly. I had faked being sick so that I could stay in the attic to play with Tommy instead of going to school. I had been excited as I raced up to the attic and called out for Tommy. He had appeared as usual, but something was off about him. He wasn’t as energetic when we played hide-and-seek. He didn’t want to play dress-up dolls as we usually did. Finally, I was fed up and asked him why he wasn’t as happy as I was.

“Because,” he said, his voice small, “It’s coming.”

That was all he said to me before he vanished into thin air. I retreated to my room upset that I hadn’t seen him he rest of the day. However, later that night, I felt a strange urge to go to the attic. Something whispered my name and I had to go investigate. My little feet padded toward the stairway, but before I stepped on the first stair, I halted and looked up at the looming door. It slowly creaked open. The noise forever embedded itself into my memories, constantly played like a record on repeat. I shook the nervous feeling that had creeped up on me and made my way up the stairs. In fear, I gripped the hem of my nightgown as something pushed me closer and closer to the door. Into the darkness.

Shivers ran down my spine. I was equivalent to a leaf on a branch in the wind. I had finally reached the door and peeked in. My eyes caught a figure standing in the corner of the attic. It was a tall, dark figure that took the shape of a man, but it wasn’t a man. Its glowing red eyes bored into my soul. My own eyes couldn’t leave his.

“Where’s Tommy?” I heard myself say, voice barely above a whisper. Fright shook me, but the concern for Tommy won over.

“Dead.” It simply responded in its sinister voice. That’s another thing that remains in my memories. Little eight year old me began to cry because I was just told by whatever it was that my friend was dead even if he was already dead to begin with. I wanted to escape the attic, but something kept my feet planted on those boards. I felt like I couldn’t breathe and when I tried to run away, the figure came closer. I sobbed harder the more it neared me. My cries fell on deaf ears, it didn’t care.

At last, it appeared before me and I could make out the jagged teeth and the cracked skin.

“Won’t you say hi to him for me?” It spoke before I could react, a force shoved me down the stairs. I rolled down them and hit the wall with a thump. Before I passed out, the thing stood in the doorway of the attic, a sadistic grin on its face. The door slammed shut with a loud bang, all I could hear as I slipped into the darkness was a deep chuckle followed by a boyish giggle. They were drowned out by mother’s screams and the sirens in the distance.

Seniors are getting ready for the October 3rd ACT Test. Sophomores and Juniors will likewise be testing using a practice ACT. We have been concentrating on ACT skills and strategies within the 5th period block and ACT classes. I encourage you to do your best on this test, and treat the practice test like the real thing. Over my career, I have seen agrowth in the importance of the ACT scores of students. It impacts your opportunity for programs after graduation including colleges, universities, cosmetology schools, TCATS,, In addition, employers are now placing importance on your scores in relation to advancements and job opportunities. Your score can mean hundreds and even thousand of dollars in scholarships. Tennessee has set a goal of a state ACT average of 21 by 2020. I encourage everyone to do your best and aim high. The choices you make now will impact you for years to come.
