This particular new build barn in Reydon, Suffolk would become a family home that Lucy would share with her husband Robert

and their two young sons. Long Farm was designed in Lucy’s words to be ‘a modest rural family house which would be regarded as a classic in years to come’. The resulting property, completed in 13 months and right on budget is a stunning build that is full of tradition and character, packed with sustainable features, highly energy efficient, and an inspirational example of sustainable architecture and construction. These elements led to Long Farm being named as one of the four best new buildings in Britain in the 2013 Grand Designs awards.

From 150 entries, Long Farm was chosen by judges including Designer and Grand Designs Presenter Kevin McCloud, Architect Phil Coffey and Interior Designer Naomi Cleaver as the Grand Designs

2013 ‘Home of the Year’ due to the panel’s conclusion that “It has crafty engagement with its context, and the way it modernises its vernacular to make a considered and contemporary scheme. It is clearly of its time and inspiring as an example of 21st Century family sustainable living.”

Lucy Marston’s design inspiration for Long Farm came from her love of her family’s former period homes. She wanted to create a classic rural family home, which would mature well and have the character and warmth of a period property as well as making the most of the site’s stunning panoramic views over the Suffolk countryside out to the North Sea.

Traditional aesthetics aside, Long Farm was very much designed to be a showcase for the combined elements of contemporary sustainable living. Working with Suffolk-based Robert Norman Construction on an overall build budget

When architect Lucy Marston set about creating the ultimate sustainable family home, it was a labour of love as well as being the combination of many years’ expertise in designing eco-friendly properties.

of £550,000, Lucy’s design incorporated conventional building materials and characteristics integrated with carefully researched sustainable and eco-friendly features.

Long Farm is built in a traditional Suffolk long barn design with a steeply pitched roof and lime mortar brickwork. Devised to suit the evolving needs of the Marston family, the layout of Long Farm was designed in a linear arrangement, with spacious separate rooms connected by sliding doors to offer variable living accommodation, with flexible open plan options that could easily adapt to suit its current and future owner’s needs.

The highly insulated engineered timber frame structure was injected with Warmcel recycled newspaper insulation; blown insulation that ensured every wall was completely insulation filled to give a completely airtight construction with no air pockets or voids – even around pipework, wiring and other obstructions. As well as being a stunning aesthetic addition, a brick

facade with traditional lime mortar, Iroko timber cladding and aluminium clad Velfac windows and sliding doors were specified to further minimise heat loss.

For the next stage of this sustainable project, renewable technology and underfloor heating experts Terra Therma, whose work also featured in a separate highly commended Grand Designs entry, were commissioned to create an energy efficient heating system for the property. Underfloor heating was installed throughout Long Farm, fed by a Daikin Altherma air source heat pump heating and hot water system, providing energy from cold air via a thermodynamic cycle.

Terra Therma used modern press fit plumbing components to provide the property with a highly efficient and clean heating system that will require little or no annual maintenance. To take into account the family’s busy lifestyle, the heating and hot water system can be operated remotely from anywhere in the world through a smartphone app or online via a Heatmiser Netmonitor system. Staying true to tradition, wood burning stoves and a cantilevered fireplace were added to provide a back-up heating source.

Overall, the building’s commitment to efficiency has placed it among the leading green properties in the country. t

Features of the new T2B project include a massive underground basement, which will allow Heathrow to develop an automated

baggage handling system. A 300m long tunnel will connect passengers with the new main Terminal 2 building via travellator and, in the future, via a light rail transit link. Once completed, T2B will deliver 16 new aircraft stands, nine of which are capable of accommodating Airbus A380s.

Sustainability has been at the heart of this major construction project. Combining lean construction techniques and efficient design solutions, Balfour Beatty has been able to utilise careful collaboration, sustainable best practices and industry-leading innovation to deliver the works sustainably.

To achieve quantity and sustainability objectives, Balfour Beatty has also worked closely with the T2B supply chain and client Heathrow Airports. Setting a benchmark in sustainability and the first BREEAM

certificate for a UK airport building, Balfour Beatty has successfully integrated a range of sustainable initiatives for the new Heathrow Terminal 2B satellite terminal helping the building achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ for sustainable construction, design and innovation.

Before work on site could begin, Balfour Beatty developed a Sustainability Action Plan to define what was expected throughout the project’s design, procurement and construction phases.

Throughout the design phase, the team focused on optimisation of design solutions to ensure that efficient systems were developed and incorporated into the final building design. An example of this includes the innovative design of the fire sprinkler system incorporated into the fire protection system, which will allow HAL to save 300,000 litres of potable water per year by recycling test water.

With the project expected to export a large amount of material to landfill, a key

driver was a clear commitment to reducing, reusing and recycling materials. Waste reduction innovations on site included the use of over 450,000m3 of London Clay to remediate a local non-operational landfill site. In addition, a large quantity of on-site gravels and concrete arisings were processed and reused under aircraft stands and taxiways.

Balfour Beatty has also supported HAL in developing and establishing the Heathrow Construction Academy, an initiative to offer training and employment opportunities to members of the five local boroughs. This programme has resulted in sustainable employment for t

T2B is one of the largest airside projects in Heathrow’s history. It is being built alongside the new main Terminal 2 at Heathrow and will eventually serve half of the 20 million passengers who will pass through each year. With the project now handed over to the client, FC&A previews this complex build which has sustainability, BIM and off-site pre-fabrication at its core.

members of the local community of Terminal 2B.

Balfour Beatty continues to set the standard for off-site prefabrication at flagship projects across the UK. At T2B, lean construction and the integration of modularised elements helped to reduce working from height and minimised waste, whilst improving day-to-day performance and increasing onsite reliability. Further benefits included the coordinated planning of daily activities reducing re-work, standing time and minimising last minute changes to the programme. With modularised

mechanical and electrical building services, the T2B project benefitted from programme acceleration, as well as improved quality and health and safety performance.

Minimal disruptionThe Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) approach used Balfour Beatty’s Engineering Services’ off-site pre-fabricated assembly of the main service modules to sustainably deliver the Terminal 2B Departure Pier, as well as significantly increasing project efficiencies

and offering the least disruption to wider airport operations.

All the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEP) modularisation requirements were incorporated into the production design by the Balfour Beatty Engineering Services design team, and this led into the detailed development of the coordinated working drawings being issued in 3D model form, incorporating all BIM material information, to the company’s ‘Modular Systems+’ off-site manufacturing facility.

The MEP solutions for Phase 2 were comprehensive and included everything from Multi-Service risers – each of which could be installed in one night compared to six weeks using a traditional approach – to VCC Air Handling Plant rooms, which were transported across the airfield overnight and structurally fixed into position in two day each – a massive saving when compared to 13 weeks for a traditional installation.

The Apron Service Corridor multi-service modules were delivered in sections and formed the spine of the services distribution, while a complete major mechanical plant room could be delivered in eight sections and installed in two weeks, shaving 24 weeks off a traditional installation. Further solutions included multi-service modules for the full length of the 250m long passenger tunnel as well as modular wiring, pipework and containment for all substructure areas.

Balfour Beatty is at the forefront of BIM (Building Information Modelling) – a system that has been fully adopted with T2B. This included the use of 3D multi-discipline modelling to support the design

and production stages followed by ongoing development into a 4D construction planning and modelling environment to support pre-construction planning and construction delivery.

Meeting the mandateDuring the largest ever airside project at Heathrow Airport, Balfour Beatty’s implementation of BIM significantly improved project efficiencies and has assisted in allowing the construction to continue with little or no impact on air-side activities.

Using this intergrated approach toward construction, Balfour Beatty is using BIM process on all major new projects to strengthen communication and team transparency. This approach falls in line with the Government’s Construction Strategy and the industry mandate that will require fully collaborative BIM level 2 as a minimum by 2016.

With limited storage available on site, just-in-time construction methods were vital and the use of detailed 3D modeling, including associated conflict detection and resolution between the other disciplines design elements, allowed this to occur. BIM has been extremely helpful in assessing changes, which ensures efficient off-site fabrication of the components and installation on site.

Taking the BIM approach, the delivery and installation routes for main MEP modules for the Plant Room and the main AHU modules were reviewed in 4D virtual safety simulations to identify constraints, dimensional clearance issues and provide an effective visual media as part of the HSE briefing and workshops. Maximising

the model environment through BIM has resulted in a smooth delivery to this constrained sensitive site.

The installation of two 100 ton Air Handling Unit modules involved all aspects of Balfour Beatty’s BIM implementation, which ranged from 3D fabrication modeling to support the off-site construction and 4D construction planning simulations. Laser scanning was also employed to ensure steelwork connections were within acceptable tolerances and ensured an efficient installation.

Julian Foster, HAL’s T2B Project Director, said: “At Heathrow Airport we’re tackling some of the world’s most challenging and complex construction projects. We see BIM as being a key enabler for these improvements and are delighted to support Balfour Beatty in this approach. They are proactive, forward looking and collaborative in their approach and have set the bar high for other suppliers to follow.”

July sentiment indices in the construction industry showed a significant improvement over the preceding month and, according

to the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS)/Markit Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), was at its highest level since June 2010. The number of building firms in “financial distress” fell dramatically in the first half of the year as well.

With the Office of National Statistics (ONS) recently announcing estimated Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 0.6 per cent in the last quarter compared with the first three months of 2013, things are beginning to look up for the UK economy.

However, there is little statistical evidence, as yet, that positive sentiment among building professionals is justified. The latest figures available suggest that

industry growth increased by 1.4 per cent in Q2 2013 from Q1 but that this was still 0.5 per cent below output levels at the same time last year. Reports from some building sectors are highly promising with an increasing number of green shoots appearing across the country. Other sectors, though, particularly those heavily reliant on Government funding, demonstrate that there is still some way to go before the industry and the UK as a whole is back in the black.

Industrial construction is highly promising, with an increase of 29 per cent compared with the same period in 2012. Surprisingly, the North of England was the single biggest contributor to this quarter’s output, representing 32 per cent of the growth, compared with 25 per cent for London and the South East and 23 per cent for the South West and Wales.

Much of the success was focussed in the light industrial, food production and research and development (R&D) categories. This is thanks to projects, such as the Immingham Renewable Fuels Terminal in Grimsby, Lincolnshire and the Orion Park Industrial Area in Dagenham, East London. With food manufacture anticipated to post increasingly robust

performance figures, we can expect this positive trend for industrial construction to continue into the near future. If the nascent and controversial hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ industry does take off, we can expect to see it contributing to sector performance over the next few years, thanks to increased demand for R&D, extraction and refinery facilities.

The medical and health sector is still poorly, with the value of projects nationwide declining 48 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter in 2012, attributable to the Government’s ongoing austerity measures. Large public hospitals contracts, such as the £335 million construction project for the Royal Liverpool Hospital and the £100 million refurbishment of the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, accounted for three quarters of the total value in the second quarter of 2013.

In an unexpected twist, the education sector experienced a 22 per cent rise in comparison with the same period last year, with state primary and secondary schools responsible for over half of this figure, despite austerity measures. Most of the projects currently being commissioned in this sector entail refurbishment of existing school buildings, as well as extension works for universities such as Swansea, Birmingham City and Sheffield.

News for these sectors will continue to be mixed for the foreseeable future, due to their dependence on state funding. Extension work for education institutions will boost overall performance, but medical and health projects are likely to be very thin on the ground for the time being, hampering the construction industry’s recovery.

In this last quarter, the civils sector posted a four per cent increase in the total value of projects over the first quarter of the year. However, this is still 69 per cent lower than the same time in 2012. In this highly volatile sector of the construction industry, figures are often skewed by the appearance of ‘one off ’ projects. Understandably, with large-scale works such as the Capital’s Cross Rail programme, the South East and London was responsible for more than half of the value of projects this quarter.

Large public works have been few and far between in recent years due to successive Austerity Budgets. However, the recently-published Infrastructure Statement commits the Government to spending £100b on roads, rail and other vital networks up to 2020. This is a welcome opportunity for the industry with

the possibility it brings of lucrative, wide-ranging national projects over the next few years, but it is unclear yet whether this will have a significant impact on sector performance in the latter half of 2013.

While down on the same time in 2012, the total value of residential projects increased by more than 15 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 from the previous three months. This is largely

thanks to the stimulus given to the private market by the Government’s Help to Buy scheme and other initiatives. Again London and the South East of England was the highest performing region, a reflection of the robustness of the jobs market and economy in that part of the country.

Ongoing financial constraints among housing associations nationwide will continue to impact performance of the public housing category and the sector in general. However, robust demand from the private housing market, particularly the private rented category, will do much to compensate for the limited state funding for new projects helping the sector’s total value to remain steady into the near future.

It will be a while yet before the construction industry as a whole returns to full health, with a number of sectors still extremely challenged by current conditions. Despite this, a broad cross-section of the industry is enjoying renewed growth. Recent Government announcements regarding additional funds for public works will have an enormous impact on the industry’s performance over the next few years. There are some glimmers and flashes ahead of us, no doubt, but it remains to be seen whether this truly is the light at the end of the tunnel.

Unlike electric locks, door magnets require an electric current to lock the door. This current then breaks with the

use of a request to exit button, cutting the lock’s magnetic hold and allowing the door to be opened.

In contrast, a motorised or solenoid lock only uses power to open the door. As doors are closed for the majority of the time, it is here that energy can be saved. As a general rule, 13 door magnets use the equivalent energy of a kettle being run all day long while electric locks use 10-20% of the energy in the same period.

Raising awareness of the benefits of electric locks is a key message for Abloy UK as we look to provide solutions that can help businesses and specifiers not only secure property, but also conform to any green agenda.

Reducing a carbon footprint, combined with the potential energy cost savings, mean that electric locks are rapidly becoming the preferred solution for many companies.

Aside from the environmental benefits, some electric locks also offer a superior level of security, which can be essential in certain applications.

The market leading Abloy range of electric locks includes motor and solenoid locks, the most effective forms of electric locking. Solenoid locks, like the Abloy EL560, work by controlling either the latch or the handle, and are suitable for internal doors of public buildings, offices, schools or hospitals, and external doors of apartments and detached houses.

Motorised locks, like the Abloy EL520, work by motorising the bolt back once a proximity card is presented or a request to exit device is used.

Without a handle, which is the most vulnerable part of a door, motorised locks are hands free making them a more secure alternative to a solenoid.

Although there will always be the temptation to cut costs and to try and have the cheapest solution possible, the growing importance of EN standards in helping buildings make the grade has to be front of mind. It is also about ensuring that public safety is a number one priority.

If you’re considering off-mains options for a property that cannot connect to the mains sewer, it’s a fairly safe bet that you’ve at least thought about installing a

septic tank.Septic tanks are a pretty typical private

drainage solution and anecdotally, probably the most common off-mains product typed into Google.

But, despite their ubiquity in the grounds of homes and buildings across the UK, septic tanks are not always the best, or indeed the right, solution for the property or its local environment.

For one thing, UK Building Regulations stipulate that whenever possible houses must be connected to the main sewer – which is why pump stations are still the most commonly specified solutions for

off-mains drainage in this country.Private/off-mains drainage options

should in fact only be considered once this option has been ruled out. According to 2010 Building Regulations, the process of assessing what type of product should then be installed (septic tank or sewage treatment plant?) starts with a site visit by a suitably qualified expert to consider all the alternatives before a decision is made.

It is an important first step because an incorrectly specified solution is simply a disaster waiting to happen – think over-flowing toilets and blocked drains. And such a disaster leaves both the householder and builder at risk of prosecution under The Public Health Act 1936, with each facing the prospect of a heavy fine.

Accessing the main drain may be possible

simply by using a pump station, or the pump station might be part of a package of solutions. For example, an effluent pump-set may be required to make a septic tank or sewage treatment plant work effectively if the level of the outlet of the holding tank is too low to enable gravity flow to the discharge point or soak-away.

A pump set may also be required to support a sewage treatment plant or septic tank if there is a nearby watercourse which is likely to flood; the pump will prevent backflow.

It’s important however, to understand from the outset that pump stations are fairly complex systems and you will need professional advice.

They must comply with both British Standards BS EN752 and Building Regulations for Foul Drainage, with a mandatory capacity to hold waste for 24 hours to protect the property should power supplies fail.

Furthermore, the pump must be sized and specified correctly to suit the site conditions and its particular application. If they are too small, the pump won’t be able to offer the requisite storage.

On both these points, we would strongly

advise you talk to the manufacturer. If it is not physically possible to pump

wastewater to the main sewer (if, for example, the house is more than 30 metres from the sewer, or if access to the sewer is not possible) the waste will need to be dealt with within the boundaries of the property.

Efficient systemsThere are a range of sewage treatment systems on the market to this end, each with an efficiency rating based on how effectively they breakdown the polluting elements within the sewage.

Septic tanks remove significant amounts of the solids within effluent, through settlement, storage and partial decomposition, but in effect they remove only around 30% of the active pollutants; they don’t actually treat the sewage.

Instead, they require a large downstream drainage field or “soakaway” through which the effluent can be discharged and filtered before it reaches ground water.

Indeed, under H2 Building Regulations, septic tank discharges are considered harmful and require secondary treatment, such as a reed bed, wherever a tank is

installed.Sewage treatment plants, on the other

hand, are highly efficient, treating more than 90% of the pollutants. They do this by cultivating aerobic bacteria within the plant that breakdown sewage.

But the ultimate solution, currently, has to be packaged sewage treatment systems, which include tertiary biological treatment such as packaged reed beds. This kind of system can raise the efficiency rating up to a whopping 98%, producing a clear, odourless overflow that is very environmentally friendly and suitable for discharging within the most sensitive sites.

As you may be aware, there are some circumstances where effluent from a treatment plant may be allowed to discharge into a watercourse but this is strictly regulated and requires

approval from the Environment Agency/Environmental Protection Agency. Applications for these discharges can be made online, but always seek advice first.

Surprisingly, perhaps, despite their high efficiency rating, sewage treatment plants don’t cost significantly more to buy, install, and maintain than septic tanks – and running costs are relatively low.

All off-mains systems should be regularly inspected and maintained in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions in order to continue to work efficiently.

To ensure consistently high standards in this area, Kingspan Environmental, along with other manufacturers, has established a professional training and registration system for accredited service providers.

When it comes to off-mains drainage, choices include pump stations, septic tanks

or sewage treatment plants

Specifying Pump Stations When specifying a pump station, consider:

• The height and distance from the product to the main sewer if pumping directly to it

• The depth of the incoming drain• The type of liquid that needs to be

pumped• The type and number of users

Most commonly, people miscalculate the depth of the incoming drain and fail to accurately measure the distance and height to the main sewer into which they’re planning to pump. It’s poor economy to base your figures on “best estimates”, especially on small sites. Even small misjudgments can result in a pumping station which is under-powered and therefore unable to do the job properly. It’s often better to call in an expert at the building design stage to determine the right location for the pumping station and make the necessary calculations. If this is not possible, then you must decide exactly where the pumping station will be located and carefully measure the drains before specifying the product.

The NHBC report, Fire in Cavities in Residential Buildings, focuses on the spread of fire within cavity walls and how cavity barriers

can play a huge part in slowing down the spread of fire within concealed spaces. The report demonstrates the importance of cavity barriers, stressing the need for them within ‘external wall constructions, where combustible material is included either as a lining or as insulation’.

Part B (Volume 1 – Dwellinghouses) of the Building Regulations details the provisions to prevent smoke and fire moving quickly through concealed cavities, which can provide a ready route for flames in the event of a fire. According to the document, concealed cavities present ‘a greater danger than would a more obvious weakness in the fabric of the building’, due to the fact that any fire would be hidden.

The minimum requirement for any cavity barrier is 30 minutes fire integrity and 15 minutes fire protection. However, depending on the building type, height

and use of active fire protection solutions such as sprinkler systems, performance requirements for fire integrity can be as high as 120 minutes.

Cavity barriers are specifically designed to fill the concealed spaces in buildings, and these include junctions between walls, roofs, ceilings and floors, as well as around windows and doors, and at junctions between external and compartmental walls. In order for a cavity barrier to perform effectively however, it must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. A poorly installed cavity barrier will affect its ability to contain a fire.

Stone wool and glass wool have long been the materials of choice for cavity barriers. While a high resistance to extreme temperatures allows stone wool to meet the maximum fire protection requirements, glass wool has better durability and more advanced compression properties. However, a new solution from Isover now combines the fire protection benefits of stone wool with the lightweight characteristics of glass

wool. Developed using next generation mineral wool technology, Isover’s ULTIMATE Cavity Barriers range features up to 120 minutes fire protection, as well as superior handleability during installation.

Although the NHBC report has reiterated the issue of the spread of fire within wall cavities, this problem can be easily controlled. By using simple solutions like cavity barriers, and ensuring they have been installed correctly, the safety levels of a building can be significantly increased, and the potential for fire spread can be avoided.

www.isover.com

The importance of cavity barriers in the home was recently highlighted in a report by the National House Building Council (NHBC), following a review of real fire incidents and a series of 21 fire experiments. Tom Foster, Senior Product Manager at Saint-Gobain Isover, looks at the requirements that cavity barriers must meet and the fundamental role they play in keeping buildings safe.

The core objectives for the project were to showcase the hotel’s forest views, keep guests safe and secure long-term, install a solution

sympathetic to the building process and maintain the Brimstone’s current design theme.

Glass fascias were the obvious choice for maximum light and visibility. However, traditional balustrades, often used to connect each glass sheet, would have interrupted the visual field. Easy Glass Slim was specified to eliminate this problem. Discrete components called Spiders were used to connect the glass fascias.

The number one concern is the safety provided by the balconies, not just the aesthetics. Q-railing’s technical team calculated that the hotel’s balconies needed to take a line load of 0.74kN. Easy Glass Slim can achieve a maximum line load of 1kN, so it was a balanced fit.

The team specified a bottom mounted channel and 15mm of heat-soaked, toughened glass. Historically, toughened glass has been a concern for architects because on extremely rare occasions, spontaneous

breakage can occur. To combat this, all glass is heat-soaked during manufacture. Therefore, any unfit glass is eliminated in the factories and never even reaches the building site.

Easy Glass Slim’s water drainage channel will protect the strength of the balconies over time and because water won’t pool, guests will be able to use their balconies all year round.

The Brimstone’s contractors didn’t need to make fitting adjustments on-site. Easy Glass Slim is manufactured so that all parts fit together neatly – installation of all 116 metres of balcony took just two weeks, with the glass taking only one day for each floor.

The balconies didn’t need to be installed until the end of the project because Q-railing manufactures a dry-fit system. This helped to avoid potential damage to the materials as they didn’t need to be installed until wet work was complete.

Clean, neat lines brought an air of quality to the balconies. Thanks to precision engineering, the balconies matched the hotel’s attention to detail and chic interiors.

Easy Glass Slim’s components are

intended to be almost unnoticeable, so creating elegant, sweeping sheets of glass. This attention to design is end-to-end, right down to the last cap rail for continuity.

The extra 16 rooms spanned two floors. Each floor contained different substrates, steel and concrete, which affected the choice of fittings.

Stainless steel M12 bolts were fixed into the top floor’s mild steel channel. While, on the bottom floor the stainless steel M12 bolts were resin anchored into the concrete lintel.

The hotel is now even better equipped to spoil its guests with stylish accommodation and a huge commercial asset: uninterrupted views across the Peak District. Installation was fast, parts fitted together neatly and products arrived on-site pre-fabricated to a high-quality finish that didn’t require extra labour.

Dan Visser, Sales and Marketing Director of the Brimstone Hotel comments: “The Q-railing system has given us an elegant, minimalist solution for Brimstones’ terrace areas. The perfect product for this installation. Brimstone has been shortlisted for the best new build in the European hotel design awards which is testament to all involved.”

In the 19th century, after coal mining and shipbuilding, glass-making was the North East’s largest provider of employment. In 1998, to mark the area’s long history in

glass production The National Glass Centre was built. With funding from the National Lottery, the centre housed glass-making businesses alongside public galleries and educational workshops.

Years passed and the centre still held its vision but was due an upgrade. It had ambitions to become a centre of national

excellence, supporting the research, teaching, production, exhibition and enjoyment of contemporary glass.

Top visitor experienceA £2.3 million injection of cash from the University of Sunderland, the Arts Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund created the opportunity to re-invigorate the Glass Centre to meet National Gallery standards, deliver a top-class visitor experience and provide improved art studios for students.

Steve Dickson, Senior Director at FaulknerBrowns Architects, who oversaw the project, said: “There were many parties involved and all were equally passionate about bringing new life to the centre. To begin with we ran a series of stakeholder engagement workshops to establish the key deliverables for the project.

“Due to tight educational programme restrictions, the project was delivered over two phases. The first responded to the educational needs of the project whilst the second catered to its art and heritage aspects.”

Phase One involved the rationalisation of the Arts Studios, the refurbishment of the shop and the aggregation of the two Hot Shops into one. The key component to ensuring the success of this phase of works was to relocate and combine these Hot Shops, which deliver the hot blown glass objects and incorporates a series of kilns, glory holes and lehrs.

Both the University and The National Glass Centre’s requirements were combined into one common facility, incorporating a studio area for the Art Foundation students. This formed a key part in the University of Sunderland’s campus rationalisation programme, which looked to move the Arts Faculty from the existing Ashburn Campus and distribute individual departments into the City Campus and St Peter’s Campus.

The Hot Glass Studio was then moved adjacent to the shop where it is visually

A centre celebrating a history of glass-making dating back 1300 years needs an iconic building. However, due to the decline of the glass industry in Sunderland, the viability and investment in the city’s National Glass Centre had suffered. The centre was in need of a facelift to help its reputation shine, not just across the North East, but on an international scale.

connected by two new floor-to-ceiling windows, one associated with the demonstration area and the other linking with the education spaces. “This offers the public an opportunity to view the skills of the craftsmen and craftswomen for the first time,” Dickson explained.

“In moving this facility, we ensured environmental improvements and efficiencies were made. Exhausted waste heat is now captured via a new extract hood and air handling units which is then re-circulated around the building. Efficient lighting systems have been installed to improve working conditions and new electric kilns formed part of Phase Two.

Other works in Phase One centred on the public’s educational needs. Tiered seating was located within the Hot Glass Studio to facilitate glass blowing demonstrations. A new thirty-person cold glass studio has been located behind the hot glass area for use by schools and the general public, and a new flame studio has been located behind the University’s Hot Shop. The shop has also been refurbished with new displays, lighting and tube working area.

Maximising engagementThe next phase focused on the refurbishment of the public entrance level. This area was previously made up of a series of small galleries, an old visitor attraction and some staff support space.

“This spatial attitude presented the

visitor with a very confusing arrangement of spaces and facilities. In fact, feedback from the public suggested that the galleries were often missed during a visit to the building – it was FaulknerBrowns’ priority to address this,” Dickson added.

“Our concept was to remove all of the small rooms and constrained entrances, and in their place create four large spaces for both gallery and educational use. Now, each gallery has a clear identity with a clear vista from the entrance. This clarity is expressed from the moment a visitor enters the building, enhancing the visual understanding and maximising user engagement.”

The four galleries and education spaces are the Temporary Gallery, The Heritage Gallery, The Long Gallery and the Education Centre.

The Temporary Gallery is the largest of the galleries and is separately controlled to achieve a museum-standard environmental quality, enabling the National Glass Centre to display international standard exhibitions. The qualities of this Gallery

are not only significant to the building, but significant to the region as the works of pioneering and highly influential artists are now being displayed here for the first time. The opening exhibition was by Erwin Eisch, an internationally-acclaimed artist whose work embodies the ideas of the international Studio Glass movement.

The Temporary Gallery also accommodates a permanent display to the rear, which currently houses the Poole Klein Collection, a collection loaned by the Museum of Scotland.

To ensure maximum flexibility and exhibition programming, a second entrance is located to the rear of the gallery and adjacent to the Long Gallery. Dickson said: “This enables the gallery to be sub-divisible, promoting smaller art exhibitions and ensuring a more agile event programme.”

Adjacent to the Temporary Gallery is the Heritage Gallery which promotes the history of glass in Sunderland. This gallery presents a narrative history of glass making from its earliest date, 674AD when Abbott St Benedict Biscop brought stained glass craftsman to make the windows for the new monastery through to the modern era with Pyrex. The heritage exhibition has been delivered by specialist designers Studio Arc who have illustrated the story via a series of pavilions.

The final gallery is the Long Gallery which is located behind the reception area, visually linking the entrance level with the riverside level. The long gallery reinforces the education agenda as it promotes the work of the Centre’s Institute for International Research in Glass as well

as the Ceramic Art Research centre. The gallery extends the full width of the building and incorporates a ‘fat’ wall with flush recessed display cases.

The final component of the project is a Learning Centre which is more than double the size of the previous accommodation. Located by the entrance, this facility contains a wet room and a dry

facility complete with the latest audio visual technologies. These rooms offer art-based learning programmes for children and school classes.

Dickson said: “The end result is a cohesive set of state-of-the-art studios with vastly improved connectivity and efficiencies catering for a multitude of facility users. In July 2013 the centre welcomed 28,095 visitors in comparison to 10,289 in July 2012, demonstrating that it’s right on track for achieving its 200,000 annual visitor target and gaining the international recognition it deserves.”

One of the UK’s leading manufacturers of aluminium eaves products, Dales Fabrications, has completed an

intriguing project for renowned rising star chef, Tom Sellers.

Tasked by Space Craft Architects to differentiate the ends of the roof and the main eaves cladding to either side, Dales used a combination of anodized and polyester powder coating finished aluminium. The result was a clever distinction between the raw edges of the building and the main surface; with large, anodized raking panels to the soffit producing a noticeable contrast to the vertical darker matt finished polyester powder coated gable end panels.

David Allgood of Allgood Guttering Ltd, comments: “From the outset, this project

was very demanding in terms of technical spec, quality and delivery requirements, we therefore required a fabricator able to successfully meet and exceed the client’s expectations. We suggested Dales Fabrications as the preferred contractor for this project given their experience, attention to detail and ability to deliver on time to a very high standard.”

Dales designed and manufactured the narrow fascia and large raking soffit panels for the main eaves to the front and rear elevations in Anolok 541. The Pale Umber bronze metallic finish of the anodized panels provided a clear contrast to the dark brown, RAL 7013 matt polyester powder coated vertical panels to the gable ends of the building.

Through ensuring a consistently high

level of care and attention, Allgood Guttering was able to successfully install the large panels of anodized aluminium on the spatially restricted site. The build featured a vast raking soffit overhang of 2m, facetted to a large radius plan curve, which required the panels to be modulated to the curtain-walling uprights. Precise and careful manufacturing by Dales combined with the care and attention to the detailed installation ensured that this element of the build was delivered to an exacting standard.

The client, rising star chef, Tom Sellers comments: “The building that houses Restaurant Story is all that I hoped it would be. The design is contemporary and the space clean and fresh. The use of natural materials, like the wood cladding and decking, and the garden landscaping gives the building a unique look in an area so full of stone and brick. It was also important to me that the building be sustainable and environmentally sound so having it completed to meet with the BREEAM standards, and to look so special, is a real result.”

Space Craft Architects, comments: “Dales were a good team to work with, and were a critical part of the design workshop, which was crucial to ensure all parties understood the limitations and reasons behind the design concept. Despite the complexity of the canopy, I think everyone would be in agreement that it is definitely one of the highlights of the finished scheme.”

Slatted timber elevations of Restaurant Story provide privacy adjacent to the roads, whilst full width glass screens allow the dining area to open up onto the more private landscaped areas, and is served by a working kitchen and store in a new basement.

www.dales-eaves.co.uk

Located in central London, Tom Sellers’ inaugural eatery, Restaurant Story, featured a range of distinctive elements which Dales Fabrications was able to skillfully accommodate on the constricted site. Replacing a derelict public convenience, the single storey pavilion was designed to sit modestly alongside a small garden, framing views of a listed statue and The Shard beyond.

Over recent years, the UK climate has changed considerably. We have seen an increase in colder

temperatures, with a significant snowfall in the winter, and if this year is anything to go by, some hot summer days. Like all natural materials, wood needs protecting – it requires a finish to provide UV protection in the summer, as well as one which offers solid protection in the winter months.

Of course, a major appeal of wood is the variation in colour, texture and sizes this versatile material offers, allowing the building to achieve a wide variety of looks. Suitable for use both internally and externally, wood provides a distinctive look to all projects. With the refurb market remaining strong, more time is being spent on upgrading gardens and interiors. Most homeowners have wood of some sort

in their garden, be it decking, door and window frames, sheds, cladding and fencing.

Wood has the ability to shrink, crack, peel and discolour – all things which will leave the surface looking old and tired. There are a number of suitable products on the market which will protect the wood from sun, wind, rain, frost and snow.

When selecting a product to protect wooden surfaces, it is important to ensure that it will maintain the wood’s breathability, as well as reduce the likeliness of swelling or shrinkage. It is also essential that the treatment adds water resistance, as this will protect it from the winter weather.

Another problem that many wooden surfaces are faced with, particularly in the UK’s mild and damp climate, is the growth of mould, algae and fungal decay. Not only are these unsightly, but they can also cause danger if they take hold on surfaces such as

decking as it will make the surface slippery. This is a very important factor to consider, and should be taken into account when selecting a suitable treatment.

Oil-/waxed-based finishes incorporate the pros of both water and oil-based finishes. It combines the smooth surface of conventional lacquers, and the ease of application of a water-based finish, while managing to eliminate the inherent disadvantages of these other types of finish.

Unlike ordinary oil finish products which form a film on the wood, the natural components penetrate deeply into the wood to create a microporous finish. Essentially it protects the wood from inside and out. This allows the wood to breathe, moisture to evaporate and ensures a flawless finish both upon application and for many years to come. After treatment the wood is strengthened from within and retains its elasticity. It becomes water repellent, stain resistant and more hard-wearing, because it meets the wood’s natural demands and does not crack, flake, peel or blister.

Slip-resistant surfaceFor every application, there is a different wood finish to protect the material against the external elements.

It is important to consider the safety element when wooden decking has been installed in the garden. An anti-slip decking oil will provide a safe outside environment all year round by increasing the durability of the surface, protecting it against mould, algae and fungal attack, and reducing the risk of slipping. The decking oil will penetrate deeply into the wood pores and fibres, providing a long lasting

Natural products are a favoured material in the construction world for many reasons and wood is no exception. Steve Grimwood, Osmo UK’s Managing Director discusses the protection and maintenance regime that natural wood products require externally to maintain their inherent style.

level of protection from within the wood. It works by protecting against the growth of slimy wood moulds and algae, which helps decking to provide a natural, non-slip surface.

A UV protection oil with SPF12 is essential for exterior wood as it provides 12 times the UV protection in comparison to untreated wood. Designed to protect, maintain and restore all types of wood from the effects of the environment, it will ensure a professional finish that will enhance and protect all types of wood for many years to come. It not only protects the wood surface, but also enhances the natural look

of the wood and will prevent damage. It is moisture regulating and reduces swelling and shrinking of the wood. This product overcomes the need for a heavy stain or a flaking varnish to keep them looking natural.

A natural oil woodstain provides a decorative and protective finish for all exterior wood. It offers a high quality finish which allows the wood to breathe and reduces the risk of swelling and shrinkage. Acting as a protection against all weather conditions, it prevents mould, algae and fungal decay as well ensuring the wood doesn’t crack, flake, peel or blister.

Some manufacturers offer an ‘effect’ range

to provide attractive silver-metallic tones. Meeting modern architectural demands, these finishes are designed to give the natural greying effect, added silver metallic pigments.

Natural preserveA good cleaning and maintenance regime is essential for wooden floors, helping to keep them looking as good as the day they were installed. With the use of a range of products, it is possible to keep floors in tip top condition.

As a natural material, wood needs maintenance to ensure it continues to retain its positive properties. The best maintenance products penetrate deeply into the wood, bringing elasticity to the surface and allowing it to breathe, preventing the pores from clogging. There are a variety of products and methods to enhance and protect the wood in this way.

A wood reviver power gel will refresh and clean greyed wooden surfaces. Restoring the natural texture and appearance of the wood, it is an ideal product for garden furniture, decking and cladding. A wood reviver will remove the loose greying layer, dirt and stains. Free from odour and biodegradable, the product complements the wood’s natural properties.

Also keep a teak-oil spray to hand as it protects, maintains and improves the appearance of garden furniture, whilst adding water repellence. Allowing the wood to breathe, the oil penetrates deeply into the woods surface, which allows the moisture content to be regulated, without causing the wood finish to crack, flake, peel or blister.

At a recent preview presentation, 100% Design unveiled the content and creative concepts which will define this month’s event.

This year’s visual concept and show theme – Creative Balance – provides the exhibition’s visual identity and an exploration of creative process and its value in the commercial world. Conceived by specialist communications design agency Thomas.Matthews, the marketing campaign was devised by branding and graphics agency Form. Creative Balance will underpin the show’s award-winning layout, content and commissions.

Following last year’s success, the curation of the show will again focus on four industry sectors, each arranged around a central ‘hub’ – Interiors, Office, Kitchen & Bathroom, Eco Design & Build – creating clear navigation for visitors. The hubs will showcase the work of thought-leaders across the design community with space to meet, learn and be inspired. The Central Bar at the heart of the show is reached through a 66m long tunnel, designed by creative and live events specialists Studio Design UK.

This year, the Interiors hub will explore the growing emphasis on 3D printing as an accessible method of production. A new global competition staged with creative collaboration agency Talenthouse will see selected pieces produced before and during the show within a specially designed interior. Issues of sustainability, quality and empowerment of individual makers will be demonstrated and debated live. The expanded Interiors section will also house a newly-established marketplace for interiors accessories.

The Office hub will be created by design practice TILT, presenting the dramatic Hanging Room concept in which suspended room elements can be lowered and raised to continually change the hub’s function. The practice is at the forefront of co-design, which integrates end users into the design process to create spaces uniquely tailored for the communities using them.

The Kitchen & Bathroom hub will incorporate the show’s restaurant, serving specially chosen seasonal foods that can be grown domestically. The space will explore design’s role in enabling micro agriculture, demonstrating the opportunities in local

and individual food production. A separate installation will present the latest technology, trends and concepts in the bathroom industry.

At the centre of the hall is a custom-designed hub by British creative studio Mette, called The Farm Kitchen.

Exploring a concept known as Building Integrated Agriculture (BIA), London-based design practice Architecture and Food (A&f) will be working with Mette on the design and integration of growing systems, showcasing the possibilities for domestic-scale food production. The Farm Kitchen explores the integration of micro-agriculture within the daily experience of the kitchen. Incorporating the show’s restaurant and a food-growing production line, the space will describe a journey from the cultivation of raw plants, to their preparation in the kitchen, and finally their consumption in an uplifting social space. All the food served can be grown on a domestic scale.

Oscar Rodriguez, Architect and A&f founder comments: “In the West, food waste, obesity and poor nutrition underpin our contemporary relationship with food, while in developing economies food shortages and malnutrition remain a continual threat. Our research has pinpointed the key drivers of today’s food paradigm and we believe that localised food production – particularly in urban environments – may address these issues in both developed and developing worlds alike.”

“Growing and self-sustainability is undoubtedly a reality for the future of kitchen and interior design,” adds Caroline Santos, Creative Director of Mette, “but nothing exists in isolation. We envisage an

approach where micro-agriculture co-exists alongside other strong design concepts; integrated seamlessly into our busy lifestyles and diverse tastes; enhancing, not replacing, our personal design preferences. We believe there is a need to balance the science of micro-agriculture with the principles of beautiful and clever design.”

The Eco, Design and Build hub will be produced by London-based materials resource studio Material Lab. The ever-changing installation will inspire interaction with some of the world’s most innovative building and architectural materials.

100% Design has expanded its International Pavilions, taking 3000m2 of space within Earls Court 1. Design regions from France, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, South Korea, Taiwan and China have already been confirmed. This section’s hub will be informed by London’s longstanding status as a global meeting point for innovative and

talent across the creative industries.A new feature at 100% Design 2013 is the

Gateway exhibition, providing opportunities for early-career designers to be recognised at the show. Working with some of the UK’s leading design organisations, Gateway links the two Earls Court spaces. Initiatives include Delight in Light with the Lighting Industry Association, Future Pioneers with Design Council and a showcase of recent Royal College of Art graduates. Gateway also highlights established British excellence through Design Guild Mark alongside special exhibits from leading UK architectural institutions.

Along the show’s central boulevards, Emerging Brands provides a platform for design companies that have been in operation for five years or less; showcasing new products and ideas for interior and product design.

British Designer Benjamin Hubert will create the 2013 auditorium, providing a dramatic backdrop to Talks With 100% Design; the UK’s largest design talks programme. Confirmed speakers include Tom Dyckhoff, chairing a panel debate on UK Architecture and a session from New London Architecture with Peter Murray. Giulio Cappellini will headline Thursday’s programme, with subsequent sessions being staged with the RSA, Frame Magazine and The British Council. The seminar schedule will focus on a key topic on each day of the show, with Wednesday honing in on Architecture, Thursday exploring issues of material and sustainability, Friday presenting the latest trends for Interior Design, and Saturday finishing with a series of consumer-facing seminars. Across the show, specialist events will provide detailed and professionally accredited CPD modules for architecture and interior design in each of the hubs.

The use of asbestos as a building material is a legacy of the built environment that today’s roofing contractors are often tasked with

tackling, as those roofs originally specified in the 1950s, 60s and 70s fail and need to be replaced. Sometimes, there may be no other option than to remove the asbestos roof and incur the project delays and added costs that specialist remediation involves.

However, while the Control of Asbestos regulations 2012 ensures that building owners are accountable for preventing any risk of exposure to asbestos fibres from their building, contractors do not need a license to work with asbestos cement products, such as profiled roofing. As a result, the most cost and time efficient option for repairing and refurbishing asbestos roofs is often encapsulation of the asbestos so that it no longer poses any danger to health.

Alternative approachesTraditional strip out and disposal of asbestos is an onerous process that incurs additional time and cost on a project thanks to the need for a specialist contractor that will remove the asbestos waste in line with the Control of Asbestos

Best practice approach to roof refurbishment

For any demolition, refurbishment or repair project, the presence of asbestos in the building can have far reaching cost and health & safety implications – and it’s not an uncommon problem. Asbestos was widely used as a roofing material right the way through to the 1970s thanks to its durability and fire resistance benefits at low cost.

Page 45: FC&A September 2013

The difference between a profiled asbestos roof refurbished using Kemper System products and the unit next door (to the rear) which remains in its original state

at Work Regulations. There are a number of alternatives, but again, the efficacy and cost of these methods should be considered carefully. A patch repair can be carried out using a paint-on coating and this may initially address an immediate water ingress problem but it is unlikely to provide anything other than a temporary fix.

Meanwhile, over-cladding the roof can provide an effective long-term remedy but is also costly and requires consideration for increased weight (structural loading) and height (possible planning permission), as well as the safe removal of loose asbestos particles resulting from fixing operations (internal and external).

The third alternative for upgrading a roof containing asbestos without removing the asbestos is to use a tough, flexible cold liquid-applied waterproof membrane like Kemper System’s Kemperol range to completely encapsulate the roof, ensuring a whole roof solution. This option not only offers significant cost savings as compared to over-cladding or removing the asbestos and replacing the roof; it also enables the roofing contractor to weatherproof

vulnerable bolt-heads and sheets laps and protect the sheet from future physical and biological degradation.

Easy encapsulationUnlike over-cladding, which involves handling and drilling of sheets risking the release of asbestos fibres, encapsulating the asbestos with a durable, flexible waterproof membrane involves no drilling, making it safer, better for the environment and more convenient and cost-effective for the building owner/occupier. However, the process does necessitate thorough cleaning of the asbestos substrate by a specialist contractor prior to application of the membrane and safe removal of any loose asbestos fibres that may result from that process.

Specialist asbestos sheet cleaning companies have equipment that can effectively remove moss, lichen and other

contamination whilst minimising damage to the surface of the sheet. These systems collect and filter the resultant contaminated water allowing for controlled disposal in line with HSE guidelines.

The roofing contractor can then begin installation of the waterproof membrane using first a primer, and then the waterproofing resin with a reinforcement fleece applied to areas most susceptible to water ingress, commonly vulnerable sheet laps, worn hook-bolts holes and penetrations. Often, contractors choose to use Kemper System’s Kemperol 1K-PUR system for this type of application as it can be applied straight from the container with no mixing and its ‘open working time’ makes it ideal for use on fragile asbestos roofs with restricted access.

Once the most vulnerable areas of waterproofing are complete, the contractor then applies Kemper’s liquid waterproofing to the entire roof. Besides encapsulating and protecting the asbestos cement and sealing in the harmful fibres, it reduces future algae growth and the uniform colour provides an attractive ‘like new’ finish.

In this way, the roofing contractor can repair any existing leaks and provide long-term protection against any future wear and tear to the roof with a tough, flexible, seamless membrane.

Asbestos is a word that many building owners, occupiers, developers and contractors dread, but it needn’t be so. The use of Kemperol on an asbestos roof is comparable in cost to an ordinary roof refurbishment while providing a durable long-term and reliable solution. ■

In the UK and Eire, Shackerley’s Sureclad ventilated cladding – compliant with all relevant British and European standards, CWCT standards for

systemised building envelopes and NHBC technical requirements – has enhanced and protected buildings across the health, education, hotel, leisure, general commercial, retail and large scale residential sectors for over a decade.

Crossville is to offer stateside specifiers the patented Queen’s Award winning Sureclad Access system which has successfully completed an extensive series of demanding architectural and engineering assessments in the US, proving its suitability for installation in regions prone to earthquakes, hurricanes and other climatic extremes.

This specialist work was carried out at the Philadelphia HQ of Architectural Testing Inc, a leading test house conducting structural performance test methods as established by AAMA, ASTM, SPRI, Miami-Dade, CCMC Technical Guides, and ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for building code compliance.

In tests to simulate earthquake conditions, a 3m high Sureclad Access

ceramic granite ventilated facade remained intact after enduring a ‘seismic drift’ of twice the distance required to meet AAMA 501.6-09. These results were described as “extraordinary” and “unique” in test reports prepared by PROCON, Crossville’s technical consultancy appointed to oversee the testing. Accordingly, Sureclad was deemed “a proven and safe system for exterior walls in active US seismic zones such as Florida.”

Static air pressure testing (in accordance with ASTM E 330-02), showed that the Sureclad fcade could withstand a force of up to 610kg/m2, equivalent to the wind pressures exerted on a 150m high building in a maximum high wind velocity zone of 150mph. The integrity of the system was also maintained when subjected to impact testing, simulating the force of high velocity windborne debris (following ASTM E1886-05 and ASTM E 1996-05 test methodologies), and to a series of extreme heating and cooling cycles (to AAMA 505.501-07).

Crossville Executive Vice President of Sales Mark Shannon commented: “Shackerley has 50 years of success in this industry, including two Queen’s Awards

for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The superior range of products combined with our 27 years of leading the domestic porcelain tile industry makes for an excellent partnership that will take the application of ventilated facade systems to a new level in the US.”

Supplied by German distributor Etanco GmbH, the matting facilitates safe access to the store’s rooftop services whilst providing protection for the roof membrane.

Crossgrip is loose laid and remains stable in winds of up to 96km/h – laboratory tests have shown that when laid flat on a stable platform it remained in position for wind speeds of 150km/h. Due to its flexible construction, the matting contours easily over uneven surfaces and its raised 14mm height helps it to straddle ponding water. The loose lay system ensures the roof substrate remains free from fixing damage and means the matting can be easily and quickly relocated.

Crossgrip’s vinyl composition makes it resistant to bacterial growth and impermeable in all weathers, including extremes of heat and ice, thereby providing a very slip resistant walkway which is permanent and only requires minimal maintenance.

Two versions of the matting are available in 10m rolls and various widths. Standard black or light grey Crossgrip is manufactured from 100% PVC and is compatible with EPDM, PVC and modified bitumen roofs while newly-launched white Crossgrip TPO is also compatible with TPO waterproof membranes.

Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects in the mid-90s, this exemplar project is still significant because it demonstrates Kalwall’s low maintenance and cost-effective performance which has not required major attention for nearly two decades. More recent mass transport projects include the new Translink facility in Belfast as well as many railway and bus stations.

Kalwall is the most highly insulating light transmitting cladding and skylighting system available. It is designed to diffuse daylight, flooding an interior with Museum-quality Daylighting without the glare and shadows produced by conventional glazing or the needs for blinds.

Energy running costs are reduced because of the system’s superior insulation which provides a much enhanced U value. This reduces energy consumption for artificial lighting, air-conditioning and heating. An insulation value of up to 0.28 W/m2K can be achieved by introducing aerogel insulation within the panels to provide the same insulation value as a solid wall.

In addition to all types of new projects, Kalwall is increasingly used for the refurbishment of aged buildings and to replace failed curtain-walling or skylighting. Structura UK is the exclusive distributor for Kalwall translucent daylight building systems for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Crossgrip ensures walkway safety on Berlin Ikea

Kalwall travels for 20 years

Crossgrip roof walkway matting, manufactured in the UK by Plastic Extruders Ltd, has been installed on the rooftop of a large Ikea store in Berlin. Without the need of any welding equipment, 700m were laid in only one day by roofing contractor Dachland Berlin.

The UK’s very first project to incorporate Kalwall UV resistant weathering surface is the Jubilee Line train maintenance ‘super-shed’ at Stratford Market Depot in East London.

Passivhaus represents a very high standard of energy efficiency in modern construction. Structures built in compliance to the Passivhaus standard only contain components which feature exceptional energy efficient qualities, conserve a large amount of energy in buildings thanks to their insulation properties and thus provide an extremely airtight building envelope.

Energy efficient rooflights harness the free and natural resource of daylight, and therefore reduces the requirement for artificial lighting, with obvious benefits for the environment and the financial cost for the building owner. The introduction of natural daylight has many other advantages, such as creating a pleasant and healthier living, working and/or learning environment,

substantiated by independent research. Following independent assessment by the

Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt Germany, DVS have launched Passivhaus certified skylights. The FEenergysave is a highly energy efficient flat roof skylight which has achieved the top efficiency class; the Advanced Components phA category. For larger area roof glazing the PR60energysave system has also achieved Passivhaus certification, another phA Advanced Component.

The most energy efficient building standard demands the most energy efficient building products and this is at the core of DVS’ entire range of rooflights – all are supplied with total product U-values, verified by calculation data-sheets for the ultimate in piece of mind.

The addition of the Passivhaus certified glazing components perfectly complements their existing range of energy efficient rooflights – and proves that DVS is a market leader in the supply of superior skylights.

Run by Wiltshire County Council, the £22m refurbishment incorporates a 1930s civic building and a tired 1970s office extension with an underutilised external courtyard. With many stakeholders operating out of the town centre building, flexibility for future developments was key to the design as well as the heavy emphasis on energy efficiency.

The external courtyard is now covered with a new ETFE ‘bubble’ roof, creating a vibrant public space between the existing buildings. The remaining sides of the

courtyard are opened up to a new public library, dining area, registry services and meeting rooms, utilising Reynaers glazing systems CW60 SC and capped, CW50 capped, Eco windows and doors and the heavy duty Vision 50 ground entrance.

Offering high performance solutions for a range of specifications, Reynaers CW50 curtain wall systems provided the optimum choice for both thermal insulation and flexibility of design for much of the glazed facades. For the larger, heavier glass surfaces, the thermally improved CW60

curtain wall system – ideal for renovation projects due to its ability to hold a weight of up to 450kg per glass panel within sloping, vertical and curved constructions – was installed.

Providing 200,000ft2 of modern open plan working environment for 1500 Wiltshire Council employees alone, extremely high durability within ground floor windows and doors was vital. Reynaers Vision 50 door solution is designed specifically for heavy traffic areas such as shopping centres so was the natural choice for the County Hall.

Bright, airy and a need to reduce energy consumption by 40% were the requirements when Reynaers Aluminium was contracted to provide its quality aluminium window and door solutions for the County Hall in Trowbridge.

Structural fixings specialist, Ancon has launched a new Cavity Wall Tie Product Selector App. App users simply answer a series of simple multiple-choice questions on cavity width, inner leaf construction and building type and height to arrive at their required solution. With each stage of the selection process, the choice of wall ties is automatically reduced and users have the option of either reviewing the available solutions or further refining their search. At the end of the process, users are presented not only with the ideal tie for their application, but with all of the information needed to draft the final specification.

Anti-slip flooring specialist Step on Safety, the UK’s fastest growing anti-slip flooring company, has developed Riserdeck, a unique lightweight riser floor system that uses the latest in durable and corrosion-resistant composite materials, with high strength, anti-slip GRP open mesh flooring, which can be supplied complete with a complementary GRP profiled support system. The riser opening can be closed off at the same time as it is formed, not only potentially saving lives but also giving the contractor the opportunity for huge cost savings. No expensive crash barriers are required, as a safe working platform is already installed.

Leading interior solutions provider Armstrong World Industries has extended its portfolio of canopy ceilings with the launch of a unique curved system which can be used either convexly or concavely to give ultimate design flexibility. Manufactured from 82% recycled content, the Optima curved canopy is also highly light reflective at 87%, enabling architects and interior designers to factor in energy savings over artificial light. The Optima curved canopy can be easily installed under plasterboard ceilings, existing grid systems or exposed concrete soffits to create spaces within spaces – defined areas within

rooms which also localise acoustic requirements since they absorb sound on the front and back.

Jaga was recently specified for a church refurbishment in Dundee. Steeple Church required a heating system that would keep its building occupants warm, whilst also be sympathetic to its original heritage features.Allan Cumming Associates turned to Jaga for the answer

to the heating requirements.Allan Cumming chose Jaga Strada DBE radiators primarily due to their compact and unobtrusive design – ideal for providing powerful heating while blending into the church’s decor. In operation, the Strada radiators are whisper quiet at less than 35 dB(A) even when operating at its highest output boost mode so they do not even disturb worshippers in silent prayer.

A building with large glazed surfaces facing south offers many advantages during the autumn, winter and spring. In the summer, however, it can lead to an uncomfortable indoor climate and irritating light reflection. Structural solar shading and screens prevent this overheating, as they stop the sunrays before they come into contact with the glazed surfaces. No need for expensive cooling using airco, plus the view outside is respected.

RENSON presents Cilium, a dynamic sun protection system, that can be transformed from a vertical sun protection system in front of a window to a horizontal, open position above a window. This solution limits the overheating of buildings during the warm summer months and minimises the use of artificial cooling systems.

During the cold winter months the low position of the sun allows the warm rays to enter the building under the retracted

folding shutters, which limits the use of artificial heating. This Cilium can be discretely integrated in exterior walls with identical cladding or as a separate element constructed in front of a window. Cilium is available as standard in two versions: with Sunclips SE.096 or Sunclips SE.130 blades.

Cilium meets the requirements set by the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

Ty Penrhos is a three storey purpose-built care home providing accommodation for 75 residents with high care dependency and, as such, the building has a particularly high demand for both heat and power 24/7.

Both Baxi-SenerTec Dachs gas-fired mini-CHP units act as lead boilers for the space heating system and each has an electrical output of 5.5kW and a minimum heat output of 12.5kW.

In the first year of operation, the Dachs system installed in the Ty Penrhos Care

Home had run for 3,544 hours generating approximately 49,000kW of heat and 19,400kW of electricity. Heat generated by the Dachs system also contributes indirectly to the production of domestic hot water via the space heating system which supplies a secondary coil in the solar heating cylinder.

Four evacuated tube solar collectors are installed on the pitched roof of the care home, supplying heat to a 450 litre twin coil

cylinder which features a non-corrosive duplex stainless steel water chamber with destratification and anti-legionella functionality as standard. This cylinder and the remainder of the system are installed in the rooftop plant room along with the Dachs units and the remainder of the heating and domestic hot water equipment.

SOLARflo evacuated tube collectors are ideal for larger commercial water heating applications as they have a higher annual, average thermal efficiency than glazed flat plate collectors and, operating at lower ambient temperatures, they are capable of providing a higher annual percentage of domestic hot water.

Ty Penrhos, one of Hafod Care’s newer care homes in Caerphilly, which specialises in dementia care, benefits from two forms of renewable energy supplied by Baxi Commercial. The mini-CHP unit from Baxi-SenerTec UK generates electricity whilst also producing useful heat, and a solar water heating system from Andrews Water Heaters is used to pre-heat domestic hot water generation.

Baxi Commercial takes care of renewable energy

In order to fulfil customer requirements and offer a complete industrial boiler range, Bosch Commercial and Industrial Heating is set to expand its product portfolio and bring Bosch’s established level of expertise from the

continental steam boiler market to the UK. The Bosch UNIVERSAL steam boiler range offers a shell boiler system for all applications with individual outputs from 175kg/h to 55,000kg/h. The new range consists of four models, each of which is suitable for liquid and gaseous fuels and comes equipped with flame/smoke tubes which allow the recovery of heat contained in the flue gases (an economiser).

Vortice has launched the Punto Evo – a development of its popular Punto intermittent axial fan which is ideal for shower rooms, en-suites and WCs. The 2010 Building regulations recommend that System 1 fans should be as low energy as possible, less than 0.5 watts per litre per second – Punto Evo satisfies that requirement and further has an extremely low decibel rating under 21 dB(a) which is the equivalent to a whisper or rustling leaves. This fan is perfectly positioned to be used as part of the Green Deal for those people who wish to increase the energy saving within their home.

Drainage & Landscaping

A leading provider of floorcoverings to the new build sector, Designer Contracts has added a hard wearing alternative to natural grass to its expanding portfolio of products. The realistic grass covering is ideal for installation on land and gardens around showhome properties and marketing porta-cabins on busy unfinished developments. Peter Kelsey, MD at Designer Contracts comments: “The grass is extremely practical and looks almost as good as the real thing. It’s ideal on working building sites where potential purchasers are viewing showhome properties – particularly in periods of wet weather when mud from real turf can be traipsed through, ruining the inside flooring of a property.”

Simpson Strong Tie, world leader in connectors for the construction industry, has compiled a new Installation Guide to help building designers and carpenters use its extensive range more efficiently and correctly. Available as a download in PDF format, the comprehensive guide features simple diagram based tips and pointers for the building professional to follow. Over 50 product ranges are included in the guide which is regularly updated as new ones are released. Everything from I-Joist and metal web hangers to truss, timber frame and SIP connectors are profiled as well as structural screws, post bases and joist end caps.

Sika – a global leader in products and solutions for the construction industry – has announced that all of its relevant products are now CE marked, in line with the new

ruling under the Construction Products Regulations. “Over the past six months our Product Management Team has

been working hard to ensure we fully comply with the new regulations,” comments Ivo Schaedler, General Manager. As of 1st July 2013 it became mandatory for manufacturers to apply

CE marking to any products covered by a harmonsied European Standard (hEN) or European Technical Assessment (ETA). For

Sika this includes its range of admixtures, concrete repair mortars, flooring systems, and roofing membranes.

To complement its new technical brochure, ‘Principles, Products and Applications’, masonry repair specialist, HELIFIX, has launched a full set of individual product datasheets. These provide detailed information on every helical fixing in the range, identify those that carry CE Marking under the Construction Products Regulation and aid product selection, specification

and installation. Each of the company’s new build and remedial wall ties, fixings, reinforcements and structural stabilisation products has its own dedicated product sheet detailing their applications, technical specifications, installation procedures and recommended tooling. For smartphone users, the datasheets feature a QR code for instant access to the relevant Helifix web page.

The treatment couch is a fundamental piece of equipment for many hands-on practitioners, whether you are providing clinical treatments and examinations, physiotherapy and massage, sports therapy, beauty and health spa procedures. The couch plays an important role in ensuring the safety and comfort of the client during sometimes lengthy procedures and affords the necessary dynamic stability for carrying out your treatment in the most efficient manner possible. The regular lounger-style treatment couch or plinth is the most widely used format and there are a number of different configurations to suit a range of treatments, procedures or therapies, as well as budget levels and workspace considerations.

A new two-storey teaching block for Martin High School in Anstey, completed by off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, a member of the Portakabin Group, has been described as an ‘iconic building’. The new facility provides eight classrooms and 12 toilets. The Yorkon pre-installed high

performance concrete floor has been used to deliver superior acoustics and a robust finish for a demanding secondary school environment. Full height curtain walling to the entrance has created an impressive exterior and a combination of spandrel panels between floors, brickwork and cedar cladding give the scheme a distinctive and contemporary appearance.

Modular building manufacturer, Portakabin has received a Zero Waste Platinum Award at the Awards for Excellence in Waste Management and Recycling 2013. This latest award follows the company’s success in achieving a Gold Award at the Zero Waste Awards earlier this year. Derek Carter, Chief Executive of the

Portakabin Group, says: “Our teams have made huge progress in the area of recycling and waste management and we were very proud to achieve our target of zero waste to landfill at our manufacturing centre in York a year ahead of schedule. We are delighted that our success has been recognised by such a prestigious national award.”

Knauf, a manufacturer of lightweight building materials and systems, is now offering the Sheetrock range of ready-mixed jointing compounds and spray finishing plasters, along with the Tuff Hide primer/surface, following its acquisition of USG Corporation’s European interests. Sheetrock All Purpose Ready-Mixed is an easy working product for fast, smooth joint finishing. Good for taping and finishing, it delivers both smooth application and long lasting performance. Meanwhile Tuff-Hide Primer-Surfacer is designed to prime and finish drywall in a single spray application. Used in concert with ProSpray as part of the company’s Spray Surface finish system, it’s a durable hard wearing coating that delivers a smoother finish.

Safesite has installed a radiused KeeGuard edge protection system at Warwick Business School in order to ensure safe access to the school’s roofs. As with many sites, plant and machinery such as air conditioning units are housed on the school’s roofs which meant that access to the roof was required. Following a survey and assessment of the roof areas by Safesite, KeeGuard free standing guardrail was specified to provide edge on the roof, allowing maintenance work to be carried out in complete safety. Being freestanding, KeeGuard provides permanent edge protection without the need fix the system into the roof’s structure or membrane.

Xella Multipor mineral insulation boards with a lambda value of 0.045 W/mK have been used to insulate internal walls of the £280m European Council headquarters in Brussels. They were specified to provide a complete envelope for the Art Deco building which sits alongside the glass and timber wing described as Herman Van Rompuy’s ‘Gilded cage’. Multipor boards are used without a vapour barrier on internal and external wall surfaces, roofs, underground garages and basement ceilings. The light cellular material is non-combustible, eradicates risk of thermal bridging and combines exceptional vapour permeability with high mechanical strength.

Leeds Castle has a rich history, originally built as a Norman Stronghold and used to house Catharine of Aragon, the wife of Henry VIII. As the oldest established maker of handmade clay tiles in the UK, Keymer Tiles were the obvious choice to maintain a piece of history without compromising on modern roofing standards. In choosing Keymer’s peg tiles, Leeds Castle is now fitted with Britain’s best. Made from Wealden Clay in a traditional manner passed from generation to generation, Keymer peg tiles are better and more cost effective than second hand tiles which deteriorate quickly when re-used.

Foremans Relocatable Building Systems, supplier of refurbished Portakabin buildings, has handed over its fifth building to Tata Steel in Scunthorpe – a new project office for a major redevelopment on the integrated steelmaking site. This latest scheme, which is sustainably constructed from recycled and refurbished steel-framed building modules, will accommodate around 60 project engineers who were previously working from a number of locations across the Scunthorpe site. Foremans supplied the building around 70% complete, with doors, windows, partitions, flooring, plumbing and electrics all pre-installed to reduce disruption to Tata Steel’s day-to-day operations. Data communications, fire and security systems were also installed by Foremans.

Situated in Shoreditch, East London, the factory was transformed by luxury property developer, Westcombe Homes. Although

the building now boasts a thoroughly contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities, some of its original features, such as exposed brickwork and beams, remain as a nod to the factory’s rich history.

Sunil Pankhania, Operations Director at Westcombe Homes, said: “Our brief was to convert the ornate Victorian building into a contemporary living space, while retaining some of its striking architectural features.

“In order to achieve the highest possible standard for the renovation, we required coatings that would not only combine an attractive finish with long-term durability, but would also help to show off the building’s unique design.”

Glidden Trade Contract Matt was specified for use on the walls and ceilings, both in the apartments and in communal

areas such as corridors, as it provided a high level of coverage while meeting the budget requirements of the project. White was chosen to maximise the building’s natural light and provide an attractive contrast to the exposed brickwork and timber.

Dulux Trade Metalshield was also used on the exposed steel beams in the apartments in Dove Grey, helping to draw attention to the building’s key architectural features, while the hardwearing and dirt resistant Dulux

Trade Satinwood was used for the trim. Sunil continued: “At Westcombe Homes,

we’ve trusted AkzoNobel products to help us achieve the highest standards on our projects for almost 30 years, so it was a natural choice for us to specify its coatings for the factory conversion. We couldn’t be happier with the finished result, and the contribution this made to our development being awarded the accolade of Best New Apartment at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards.”

A range of AkzoNobel coatings have been used in the award-winning conversion of a Victorian chocolate factory into a modern day living space. The building, which now comprises 48 residential apartments, was awarded the Evening Standard New Homes Award for Best Apartment, due to its impressive layout, high quality finish and use of materials.
