Both FC Bayern München and FC Internazionale Milano have qualified from Group B so the only question remains as to who will occupy first place. The advantage lies with the home team as they have a two-point advantage over their Italian visitors and only need a draw at the Fußball Arena München to go one better than their achievement in each of the three previous campaigns when they ended the group stage as runners-up. • Three successive wins have arrested a disappointing start to Inter's fifth group campaign in a row after they lost both their opening fixtures, including the Matchday 2 game at home to Bayern. Claudio Pizarro's 81st-minute opener and Lukas Podolski's goal in added time gave the German side a notable success. Inter also lost their discipline as Zlatan Ibrahimović and Fabio Grosso both received late red cards. Away victories • Before that game the teams had only met on one occasion in UEFA club competition, in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup third round. Both enjoyed notable away victories, although Bayern were the happier at the end of the second leg, progressing on away goals after trumping Inter's 2-0 victory in Germany with a 3-1 success in Milan. That was their last win in Italy before that 27 September success. • Bayern have played nine home games against Italian visitors in European competition and they will consider just three wins, three draws and three defeats a disappointing return. • When Inter won at Bayern in 1988 it was part of three successive wins in Germany. They are unbeaten in their last four visits (three draws and a win) and their record should give them confidence with only two defeats suffered in 12 away games, which include six draws and four wins. Magnificent start • While Inter's fortunes in this campaign have received a sizeable boost, Bayern's form has dipped a little after their magnificent start when they won their first three games, the same as a year ago, without conceding a goal. On Matchday 4 they dropped their first points while maintaining their defensive prowess in a 0-0 home draw with Sporting Clube de Portugal. • Three weeks later they conceded their first goals of the tournament in a 2-2 draw at FC Spartak Moskva. Claudio Pizarro scored twice to give the German champions the lead after Maxym Kalynychenko's early free-kick had put the home team ahead. Radoslav Kováč found the net with 18 minutes remaining to earn the Russian side their second point in five games. • Qualification was secured for the Nerazzurri by Hernán Crespo's first UEFA Champions League goal in just under a year which put paid to Sporting's own hopes of advancing at the San Siro two weeks ago. If they win in Bavaria they will be going through as group winners for the fourth time in the last five editions. In the other game in the section, Sporting require a draw at home to Spartak to enter the UEFA Cup. UEFA club competition milestones• Bayern are chasing their first appearance in the European Champion Clubs' Cup final - and their eighth overall -since their penalty shoot-out defeat of Valencia CF at the end of the 2000/01 season having recovered from theheartbreak of conceding two goals in added time against Manchester United FC in the final two years previously.

• The German side, together with AFC Ajax, dominated the European football landscape during the 1970s with threesuccessive victories in the competition against Club Atlético de Madrid (1973/74), Leeds United AFC (1974/75) andAS Saint-Etienne (1975/76). They also played in the 1981/82 and 1986/87 finals, but lost out to Aston Villa FC (1-0)and FC Porto (2-1) respectively.

• Both Bayern and Juventus hold the distinct record of being the only teams to compete in the European ChampionClubs' Cup final in each of the last four decades. Bayern's record is as follows:2000/01: FC Bayern München 1-1 Valencia CF (5-4 on penalties after extra time)1998/99: Manchester United FC 2-1 FC Bayern München1986/87: FC Bayern München 1-2 FC Porto1981/82: Aston Villa FC 1-0 FC Bayern München1975/76: FC Bayern München 1-0 AS Saint-Etienne1974/75: FC Bayern München 2-0 Leeds United AFC1973/74: Club Atlético de Madrid 0-4 FC Bayern München (final replay after the two sides drew 1-1 in the final).

2005/06 seasonDomestic record: Bayern retained their Bundesliga crown in fine style, although had just a five-point margin onWerder Bremen as opposed to their 14-point lead over FC Schalke 04 in the previous campaign. It was Bayern'sseventh Bundesliga title in ten seasons and their 19th since the current league format came into being at the start ofthe 1963/64 campaign. It was enough, of course, to earn an automatic group-stage berth in the UEFA ChampionsLeague.

Match facts

Bayern

• Five FC Bayern München players have featured in all five UEFA Champions League matches to date: Oliver Kahn,Willy Sagnol, Daniel Van Buyten, Hasan Salihamidžić and Claudio Pizarro. Of those, Kahn, Sagnol and VanBuyten have played all 450 minutes so far.

• Kahn will make his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance should he feature against Inter on Matchday 6.The Bayern goalkeeper would become the fourth player to achieve that feat after Raúl González, Roberto Carlos andDavid Beckham while Paolo Maldini could also bring up his century on Matchday 6.

• Roque Santa Cruz, meanwhile, is on 48 games in the competition although he could bring up his half-century inUEFA club competition against Inter. The Paraguayan striker's only appearance in a UEFA competition outside theUEFA Champions League came against Liverpool FC in the 2001 UEFA Super Cup in Monaco.

• At the other end of the scale, summer signing Lukas Podolski made his UEFA Champions League debut onMatchday 1. It was also the striker's first appearance in UEFA club competition and he subsequently scored his firstgoal against Inter on Matchday 2.

• Julio dos Santos made his first appearance in UEFA club competition as a second-half substitute in Lisbon onMatchday 4 while Christian Lell started for the first time in the reverse fixture in Munich and kept his place on Matchday5.

• Only three Bayern players have reached double figures in goals in the UEFA Champions League; Roy Makaayleads the way with 27 ahead of Pizarro (14) and Mehmet Scholl (12). Salihamidžić is next with nine.

• Pizarro has scored four goals in the first five games, one fewer than top scorers Didier Drogba, Kaká and FernandoMorientes. Bastian Schweinsteiger, meanwhile, is one of 22 players who have scored twice in this season'scompetition.

• Schweinsteiger and Makaay have both had six shots on goal, six fewer than Kaká who has had the most.

• Mark van Bommel has committed 15 fouls to date, five fewer than Brandão who has been penalised the mostfrequently.

• The German champions conceded for the first time in this season's group stage in Moscow on Matchday 5.

• Despite scoring nine times so far only Inter, with 13, and FC København (14) have had fewer corners than Bayern'stotal of 15.

• Mats Hummels celebrates his 18th birthday on 16 December, four days before Martín Demichelis is 26.

• Bayern could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday despitedominating much of the match. Midway through the first half the German champions were in front after a Schweinsteigerfree-kick was headed in by Demichelis. Michael Delura equalised for the visitors before the break however, anddespite controlling the play in the second period Bayern failed to create enough chances to win.

• Lúcio returned to the Bayern starting lineup at the weekend meaning Demichelis was switched into a midfield role.

Page 8: FC Bayern München v FC Internazionale Milano · 2006-12-04 · Both FC Bayern München and FC Internazionale Milano have qualified from Group B so the only question remains as to

• Bayern remained fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 27 points from 15 games. It is the smallest points total theclub have amassed at this stage of a season since the 2000/01 campaign.

• Felix Magath said: "Mönchengladbach played well and not like a team trying to avoid relegation. After we had takenthe lead we, yet again, lacked urgency to score a second goal. I cannot fault our effort in the second half, we put alot of pressure on our opponents, but just didn't score. We have lost two points and it will now be very difficult to betop when the winter break arrives."

• "It's nice to be on top of the league at the winter break, but it is much more important to be on top at the end of theseason," said Sebastian Deisler. "There are still so many matches to be played, we still have time."

• Only Kahn, Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Van Buyten have played in all 15 Bundesliga games this season for Bayern.

• Bayern once again came from behind to win 2-1 at Hamburger SV 2-1 on 25 November. The home side had takenthe lead thanks to a Rafael van der Vaart penalty but Makaay's eighth goal of the season levelled matters after theinterval. Pizarro then got a deserved late winner for a Bayern team who had dominated the second half. The visitorswere inspired by a brilliant performance from Deisler who, playing his second Bundesliga match after returning fromeight months out with a serious knee injury, came on at half-time to set up both goals.

• Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has vowed not to put any extra pressure on Deisler after his fine display: "Thepoor guy has eight difficult months behind him, and now he has played one superb half. But he won’t get any pressurefrom us, he will be able to fully recover."

• Brazilian defender Lucio also came on at half-time following a ligament injury to his left foot. He had been absentsince the 3-1 Bundesliga defeat at Werder Bremen on 21 October.

• Demichelis's place in central defence might be under threat now that Lucio has returned but the centre-back isunconcerned, saying: "You'll have to ask the coach about that. I can only say I am pleased with Van Buyten, he ispleased with me. We have a good sense of positioning, we are reacting to each others' signals. I hope to be able tokeep my place. It is my aim to stay at Bayern for ten years. That's only achieved by the greats like Kahn or Scholl."

• Van Buyten celebrated his 75th Bundesliga game against his former club Hamburg, for whom he made 61 of thoseappearances.

• Makaay's goal against Hamburg was his eighth of the season. "You can see that he is determined to finish as theleading scorer in the Bundesliga after twice finishing second," said Magath.

• The loss to then bottom side Hannover 96 on 8 November was Bayern's fourth Bundesliga defeat of the campaign, one more than they suffered in the whole of last season.

• Three wins in a row subsequently brought Bayern's Bundesliga campaign back on track. However, in all of three ofthose games the Munich club had to come from behind.

• "We can definitely say we've got our act together and moved on in November," said Magath. "The first half of theseason has proved as tough as we expected, because of the World Cup and our limited preparation time. I'd like usto recover top spot in the league, go through to the next round in the German Cup, and take at least a point from ourChampions League meeting with Inter so we finish top of our group."

• Bayern continue to be without Owen Hargreaves, who broke his leg on 16 September in the match against DSCArminia Bielefeld. "His bone took longer to heal than we had expected, but he is now on his way back," said Magath.Valérien Ismaël is also on the sidelines after breaking his leg back in August.

• Hargreaves started light training last week but recently suffered a new setback after learning that his bone has nothealed entirely. He will take a break from light training for two weeks.

• Podolski returned to training on 29 November after a four-week absence with an ankle injury. He has last playedon 21 October in the 3-1 defeat at Bremen. "He is looking good, but we have to wait and see when he will return tothe squad," said Magath.

• While it remains to be seen if any new arrivals will come in over the winter, Bayern have revealed plans to make amajor signing next summer. Rummenigge said: "He has to be a great footballer as well as having a great personality.A signing like this would be new in Germany, but we can't do it before summer, because the kind of players availablein winter are not what we need right now."

• Bayern are intending to offer Pizarro a new contract as his existing deal is due to expire next summer. "We will talkto his agent at the end of this year or the beginning of next year to see if he wants to stay," said general managerUli Hoeness.

Inter

• Five Inter players have featured in all five UEFA Champions League matches to date: Iván Córdoba, Javier Zanetti,Maicon, Dejan Stanković and Olivier Dacourt. Of those, Córdoba, Maicon and Dacourt have played all 450 minutesso far.

• Having made his 100th UEFA club competition appearance against Sporting Clube de Portugal a fortnight ago,Zanetti could feature for the 50th time in the UEFA Champions League in Munich. Stanković brought up his half-centuryin the competition on Matchday 5.

• Zanetti was the second member of the Inter squad to bring up a century of UEFA club games; Luís Figo leads theway on 133 matches and is also the most experienced member of the squad in UEFA Champions League terms with94.

• Zanetti became the second player to achieve the landmark of 100 UEFA club competition appearances while withInter after Giuseppe Bergomi, who featured 117 times in Europe for the Italian club. Córdoba is level with formerInter goalkeeper Walter Zenga on 71 European appearances in the table, with Giacinto Facchetti andGiuseppe Baresi joint third in the standings on 73 matches each.

• Marco Materazzi made his 50th appearance in UEFA club competition in Moscow, a mark Zlatan Ibrahimovićreached against Sporting a fortnight ago.

• Crespo has been caught offside seven times to date, six fewer than Francesco Totti and Mohamed Tchite, whohave been caught behind the last defender more than anyone else.

• Figo has committed 13 fouls to date, seven fewer than the most penalised player, Brandão. Dacourt has givenaway 12 free-kicks.

• Zanetti has been fouled 13 times, four fewer than Ronaldinho and Florent Malouda.

• Inter are the only side to have had three players sent off to date; Patrick Vieira was dismissed in Lisbon on Matchday1 while Ibrahimović and Grosso both saw red in the first game against Bayern. Inter have also collected ten yellowcards, six fewer than FC Shakhtar Donetsk, who have picked up the most bookings.

• Inter have had only 17 shots wide in the first five games, more only than Celtic FC who have missed the target oneight occasions.

• Inter have also won the fewest corners of the 32 teams in the group stage with 13.

• Inter coach Roberto Mancini celebrated his 42nd birthday on 27 November, the day before Grosso turned 29.Francesco Toldo was 35 on 2 December.

• Serie A leaders Inter made it eleven wins in a row in all competitions with a 2-0 home defeat of AC Siena on Saturday.Nicolás Burdisso, in for the injured Córdoba (thigh), gave the Nerazzurri the lead after 12 minutes, heading inStanković's left-wing corner. Siena reacted well and created several opportunities to equalise. Their best chance tolevel matters came with a penalty award early in the second half but Júlio César saved from Mario Frick. Inter thenwrapped up the victory when Crespo dribbled through before sending a lofted right-foot shot into the net.

• Esteban Cambiasso's comeback from a calf injury continued with his first start since 9 September as he replacedDacourt in midfield, with the Frenchman out with a thigh injury since Matchday 5. Cruz (knee) and Adriano (back)were also absent but Alvaro Recoba was back on the bench, having been out since 25 October with a calf problem.

• Mancini said: "I knew it was a difficult game for us. Siena are in great form and caused us a few problems. Weshould have played better after taking an early lead but the pitch was not in great condition and it was not easy toplay with the ball on the ground. However, we are not conceding many goals as we were at the beginning of theseason. I congratulate my players for this because we have improved a lot in this sense."

• Burdisso's goal was his first for Inter in Serie A but his third in three days, having struck twice in the Coppa Italiasuccess against FC Messina Peloro on Wednesday.

• Júlio César's penalty save was his second in quick succession, having stopped a spot-kick in the 2-0 win againstAscoli Calcio 1898 on 5 November.

• It was the seventh consecutive win in Serie A for Inter. The overall record is eleven, which was set by Roma lastseason. Inter scored for the 26th consecutive time at home in Serie A. The Nerazzurri have also not been breachedat home since the 4-1 win against AS Livorno Calcio on 25 October.

• In all competitions Inter have won 13 of their last 14 games.

• Four days after defeating Sporting on 22 November, Inter won 2-1 at US Città di Palermo. Ibrahimović opened thescoring with a powerful right foot shot from long range. Although Amauri equalised just before half-time, Vieira scoredthe winner after the break with a right-foot shot.

• Mancini surprisingly decided to start with Adriano as Ibrahimović's partner up front with Crespo on the bench.Cruz (knee) and Recoba (back) were both unavailable.

• "I'm very happy with the performance of my players," said Mancini. "We knew it was going to be a difficult gamebut our display was extraordinary, especially in the first half. However, I think Palermo and Roma are two great sidesand we will have to fight them until the end of the season to win the Scudetto."

• Vieira's goal against Palermo was his first in an Inter shirt. The French midfielder joined the Nerazzurri from Juventuslast summer.

• Adriano made his first start since 15 October against Calcio Catania. He set up both Inter goals but is yet to scorehis first goal for the Nerazzurri this season.

• With the win against Palermo, Inter recorded a ninth successive victory in all competitions which eclipses theirprevious record set in 1939/40 and equalled in 1988/89 and 1997/98.

• Three days later Inter made it ten by defeating Messina 4-0 in the second leg of the Coppa Italia round of 16 toprogress 5-0 on aggregate. Burdisso scored twice with headers from Figo corners and went close to a third in thesame way, but his team-mate Marco Andreolli was the last player to touch the ball before it crossed the line. Gonzálezalso found the net with a header from a Santiago Solari cross.

• "We did not start very well," said Mancini. "Then we scored and everything became easier. It is a very good periodfor us as we are very relaxed."

• Once again Adriano failed to score his first goal of the season. and has not found the net since the UEFA ChampionsLeague game against Villarreal CF on 29 March. "He is not yet fully fit," Mancini said. "But he is definitely going inthe right direction."

• Burdisso, González and Andreolli all scored their first goal for the Nerazzurri against Messina.

• Burdisso's second on the night was Inter's 300th in the history Coppa Italia.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Holders FC Barcelona are not having an easy ride this time around. Failure to beat Werder Bremen would make themthe first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (Thisrecord, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage)

In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregatein the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

Manchester United FC could become the first team to win their first three games in a group stage and still not progressif they fail to pick up at least a point against SL Benfica.

Alessandro Costacurta will extend the UEFA Champions League oldest player record he set on Matchday 5 to 40years and 226 days if he features against LOSC Lille Métropole. Against AEK Athens FC on Matchday 5, the veterandefender was 40 years and 211 days, 94 days older than previous record holder, Club Brugge KV goalkeeper DanyVerlinden when he played the full 90 minutes against AFC Ajax on 9 December 2003. Laurent Blanc is currently theoldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days having found the net for Manchester UnitedFC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002.

For those already-qualified clubs considering giving a chance to young players, Celestine Babayaro is the youngestplayer to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSCAnderlecht against FC Steaua Bucuresti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute.

PFC Levski Sofia have double incentive for wanting to do well at Chelsea FC. They are aiming to avoid joining 1. FCKošice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. TheSlovakian side did just that in their maiden campaign in 1997/98, and have not returned to the competition since. Onlyfive other teams have ever gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point namely SK RapidWien (05/06), RSC Anderlecht (04/05), FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (02/03, first and second groupstage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (01/02, first group stage).

Levski have also shipped 15 goals in their first five outings this term, just four short of the record number let in duringa group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC (19) in the 1995/96 campaign.

Spartak have not won in their last 22 games in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK AthensFC on Matchday 3 this season. AEK ended their run of 21 games without a win with a 1-0 home victory against LOSCLille Métropole on Matchday 4.

Spartak extended their sequence without a win to 22 games with the 2-2 home draw against FC Bayern München onMatchday 5. Those 22 games are made up of 17 defeats and five draws. The last time Spartak won was 22 November2000 with a 4-1 second group stage victory at home against Arsenal FC. Interestingly, Spartak’s last away win wasat Sporting Clube de Portugal, their Matchday 6 opponents, when they won 3-0 in Lisbon on 17 October 2000. Theyhave not won in their last 12 away games in Europe’s premier club competition.

For all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals in the first five games. They can take comfort fromthe achievement of Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advancedto the next phase with just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they madeit all the way to the semi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

AEK and AS Roma can still go through with seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introducedin 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FCin 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, afeat achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but noneof the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A featuresthree league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finishedsecond in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature twodomestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions.Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classifiedin third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placedfinishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic leaguechampionship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation inthe UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP andReal Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC'srecord of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end lastseason, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons,United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four timesand the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition threetimes in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However,in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskvaand FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joinedby FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claimtheir place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96,the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA ChampionsLeague final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

European Union affairsConcerted co-operation between UEFA and the European political authorities, and the protection of sport's specificnature in future EU legislation, are crucial for football's wellbeing. This was the message from the fourth UEFA Seminaron European Union Affairs held last Thursday and Friday at the Belgian FA headquarters in Brussels, attended bysenior EU officials, members of the European parliament and representatives of UEFA's 52 member associations. The seminar put particular focus on the Independent European Sport Review, which has UEFA's full endorsement, and which contains key recommendations for football's wellbeing. Medical symposiumAlso last week, UEFA vice-president Senes Erzik welcomed medical experts from across the sporting world to thefourth UEFA Medical Symposium in Istanbul. In his opening address, he said: "Sports medicine plays an increasinglyessential role in modern football. Players now play more matches than ever before and in doing so they place theirbodies under excessive physical strain. As the demands on top level players intensify, greater importance is placedappropriate and specific medical support. It is this increase in importance and the constantly changing nature of sportsmedicine that makes a football specific medical symposium necessary."

Head coach profiles

Felix MagathDate of birth: 26 July 1953Nationality: GermanPlaying career: Hamburger SVCoaching career: Hamburger SV, 1. FC Nürnberg, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart, FC BayernMünchen.

An elegant creative midfielder for Hamburger SV and West Germany, Felix Magath has added steel and discipline tohis methods. He has more than proved himself equal to the task of replacing Ottmar Hitzfeld at FC Bayern München, helping the Bavarian giants achieve domestic dominance. Under Magath, Bayern have won the double for the pasttwo seasons.

Magath, the son of a Puerto Rican soldier in the US Army and German mother, enjoyed a glittering internationalcareer, his 43 caps encompassing victory in the 1980 UEFA European Championship in Italy and the 1982 and 1986FIFA World Cups, both of which saw the midfielder collect runners-up medals. A one-club man, Magath scored 46times in 306 Bundesliga matches during a ten-year playing career at Hamburg, scoring the only goal of the 1983European Champion Clubs' Cup final against Juventus, Hamburg's only continental title.

He started at Hamburg, before moving on to 1. FC Nürnberg, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart, where he enjoyed four fruitful seasons. In 2002/03, Magath was voted coach of the year after guiding his team tosecond. He switched to Munich in summer 2004, and won the title at the first attempt having set a Bundesliga recordof 15 successive wins. The German Cup was also acquired and Magath repeated the league and cup triumph in the2005/06 campaign. European success has been harder to come by, with the 2004/05 UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-finals his best achievement to date at Bayern. With a contract extended until 2008, there is still plenty of time.

Roberto ManciniDate of birth: 27 November 1964Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria, S.S. Lazio, Leicester City FCCoaching career: ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano

Roberto Mancini became FC Internazionale Milano's eleventh coach since 1995 on 7 July 2004, replacing AlbertoZaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with S.S. Lazio, and is already considered one of the most stylishand promising trainers in Italy despite his age. As a player Mancini made his Serie A debut on 13 September 1981for Bologna FC, going on to play for Sampdoria UC, S.S. Lazio and Leicester City FC.

He won two Italian first division titles (one each with Sampdoria and Lazio) six Coppa Italias (four with Sampdoria, two with Lazio) and two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups (one with Sampdoria, one with Lazio). For the Italian national team,Mancini won 36 caps and scored four goals. He then started his coaching career as assistant to future Englandmanager Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at ACF Fiorentina in spring 2001. After leadingFiorentina to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into theUEFA Champions League and the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Inter saw him as the man to end a Serie A title drought stretching back to the 1988/89 season and for the secondtime, having done so when appointed at Lazio, Mancini replaced Zaccheroni. He immediately led the Nerazzurri toCoppa Italia glory, Inter's first domestic honour since that 1989 Scudetto. Then, after Juventus were stripped of their2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points penalty, Inter were finally crowned champions of Italy again. Mancini willlook to repeat that success in more conventional fashion in the 2006/07 domestic and European campaigns.

Luis Medina Cantalejo is relishing taking charge of the game’s biggest names after his accession to the UEFA éliteranks as the latest in a long line of excellent Spanish referees. Already in the 2006/07 campaign, he had the honourof being in the middle for Liverpool FC's dramatic 3-2 victory against Galatasaray SK on Matchday 2.

Medina Cantalejo was born in Seville on 1 March 1964, 34 years before making his Primera División debut. Awardedhis FIFA badge at the start of 2002, early appointments in youth tournament qualifiers, the UEFA Cup and UEFAChampions League qualifying ties aided his development. He lists an FC Barcelona-Real Madrid CF clash from 2002as one of his career highlights, while another came in 2004 when he was rewarded for some sterling displays at theUEFA European Under-21 Championship with the final won 3-0 by Italy against Serbia and Montenegro.

He gained élite status after the tournament in Germany and justified that promotion with more controlled performancesat the pinnacle of European football – earning an August 2005 date in Russia for a Premier-Liga match between PFCCSKA Moskva and FC Zenit St. Petersburg. The 2005/06 season was particularly memorable as Medina Cantalejotook charge of the Spanish Cup final, three UEFA Champions League ties and a FIFA World Cup play-off betweenAustralia and Uruguay before travelling to the competition proper in Germany where his third and final game wasFrance’s quarter-final victory against Brazil.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
