FAUNA INVENTORY OF VITORIA-GASTEIZ

The following tables show only those species whose presence has been detected within the

municipality through a number of specific studies performed in this territory.

The classification of each species is described both in the Basque Autonomous Country

(Catalogue of Threatened Species in the Basque Autonomous Community), as well as in Spain

(Spanish Red Book) and in Europe (Directive 92/43/CEE of the Council, relating to the

conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna and, Directive 2009/147/CE of

the European Parliament and Council of November 30, 2008, relating to the conservation of wild

birds).

INVENTORY OF INVERTEBRATES OF VITORIA-GASTEIZ

Taking all the studies carried out at a local and regional level as the bibliographical basis, a

partial inventory has been drawn up of invertebrate species whose presence has been detected

in the municipality. Likewise, other sources of information such as the Invertebrates Red Book

of Spain and the Atlas of Threatened Invertebrates of Spain (critically endangered and

endangered species) have been analysed.

It should be noted that the data presented here are the results of a review of the specific studies

carried out to date in the municipality and represent a mere approximation to the local

biodiversity with regard to invertebrate species. No attempt has been made to assess the total

number of invertebrates that exist in the municipality or to compare this with the situation in the

Basque Community, but we have tried to reflect the enormous diversity and originality of

invertebrate species in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

So much so that the Carabida order, one of the most widely studied communities of coleopters

in the municipality, represents one of the groups of greatest interest for conservation at a state

level, with 108 species.

Having analysed a small portion of the total invertebrates that inhabit the municipality, there

follows a list of the 9 endangered or protected species (according to the State Catalogue of

Endangered Species, the Red Book of Invertebrates of Spain and Directive 92/43/CEE of the

Council relating to the conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna).

Exotic Invasive Species of Vitoria-Gasteiz

According to the “Diagnosis of exotic invasive fauna of the Basque Country, Ihobe 2009”, more

than half of the exotic fauna species of the Basque Community are invertebrates, specifically 25

species. Of the total exotic species of invertebrates of the Basque Community, there follows a

list of those invertebrates whose presence in the municipality is proven and in addition to being

exotic are also invasive or have a high potential invasiveness in wild ecosystems. Agricultural

plagues have been segregated.
