Throughout the years that it took to complete the Faulkner County Cemetery Census, I was helped along the way by many people. To name them all, would be difficult due to the passage of time and I would run the risk of omitting some. However, I would like to especially thank the following: Veradean (Johnson) McCord, Charlotte (Johnson) Moudy, Stephanie (Moudy) Weatherington, Glenna (Blair) Shumate, Suzee (White) Cia, Joe Melton, Connie (Hall) Weir, Lynita Langley-Ware, Desmond (Walls) Allen, Euna and Steve Beavers, Charles Parsons, and Vivian Hogue. I'm also grateful for and indebted to Terri Buster and Charlie Ward, who have made it possible for me to accomplish my dream.

This census is dedicated to my sweet, dear mother, Veradean McCord, my wise and understanding sister, Charlotte Moudy, and Suzee Cia, my tried-and true, faithful friend, who have continually supported my efforts to complete this long and difficult project. It is also dedicated to the memory of so many loved ones that have gone before us, whose lives changed our history and our perspectives of life. To my Lord and Savior, whom I thank for guiding me and watching over me as I walked the hallowed grounds and for giving me courage, strength, and determination.

East Shady Grove Cemetery

Location and Description This is an active, well-maintained, and organized cemetery. It is situated on a gentle slope and is surrounded by pastureland and a panoramic view of wooded hills and valleys. It is located approximately three miles east of Greenbrier on Highway 225. There are many people buried here who have long connections with Greenbrier and the surrounding area. The cemetery is aptly named because of its grove of large trees which provide shade throughout the cemetery. In recent times, the descendants of people buried at East Shady Grove have organized a board and annual clean-up day. David Reynolds, president of the board, has also mailed out a newsletter for several years. This endeavor has improved the cemetery’s future by reaching out to the families and friends connected to the cemetery for financial support and kindling an interest in the cemetery. In the March 2003 issue, Mr. Reynolds stated that a new chain-link fence was installed along two sides of the cemetery, donated by Kitchell Wilson. “He has been a strong supporter of the cemetery in various ways through the years. “Bob and Ann Cantrell print out the newsletter and address labels at their own expense. This is truly a great benefit to all of us who are entrusted in the events related to the cemetery.” In 2007, Mr. David Reynolds relinquished his position as president, and his nephew, Rick Reynolds, assumed a position on the board. In his remarks, he stated: “It was an honor to serve these past many years and I thank you for your confidence and cooperation and support. Thanks for what you have done and are doing to keep our cemetery looking good.” The enthusiasm and support this cemetery receives should be a model for all cemeteries. The efforts of those who participate in its well-being will be a source of pride for many years to come. History East Shady Grove Cemetery had its beginnings with the burial of Mary Ann Castleberry, wife of S. M. Castleberry, who died in 1874. The next recorded burial was Mary Powell Carter, who died in 1881. Her large, hand-lettered rock marker is remarkable, in that it is still partially legible today. According to an 1873 ownership map of Faulkner County, East Shady Grove Cemetery is located on the old El Paso-Springfield Road. The property-owners of the land surrounding the cemetery at that time were: W. M. Mills, W. M. Carter, J. J. Cantrell, James Earnhart, and S. A. Sarber.

Naomi (Moore) Cole, the widow of Virgil R. Cole. They were married in 1908 in Faulkner County. Amanda was the daughter of Madison Elliott and Mary Elizabeth (Hardin) Moore, early settlers of Greenbrier. F. D. and Amanda had three children. Francis and Ellen and several of their children were buried in East Shady Grove Cemetery. According to an article submitted for Faulkner County: Its Land and People by Dennis Cantrell and the journal of Lou Glenn Tucker, "The Cantrell family dates back to a brick maker and a brick mason who came to Philadelphia around 1682. He is credited with the building of the first brick home in Philadelphia which was to be the home of William Penn. It stands today [1987] as a historical landmark in Fairmount Park. The bricks were shipped from England as ballast in the ship "Welcome," which brought William Penn to America. The ancestors of the Faulkner County Cantrell families were from Georgia." Joseph J. Earnhart was born on March 14, 1828, in Cabarras County, North Carolina, son of James Allison and Esther (Long) Earnhart. The ancestors of this Faulkner County branch of the Earnhart family have been traced back to 1630. The original spelling of "Earnhart" was "Ehrenhardt." Hamman Erhenhardt was born in 1630 and died on December 29, 1722, in Ilbesheim, Pfalz, Germany. He had two children: Hans Counrath and Anna Margaretha (b. 1671).

Hans Counrath Ehrenhardt was born in 1660 and died on February 22, 1748, in Ilbesheim, Germany. He married Maria Petronella Buesin on June 22, 1723, in Ilbesheim. Hans and Maria had five children: Johannes (b. 1689), Johann Heinrich (1693), Hans Jacob (b. 1695), Anna Catharina (b. 1703), and Maria Elizabetha (b. 1726). Johannes Ehrenhardt, son of Hans Counrath and Maria Petronella, first married Anna Margaretha Funckin on November 22, 1912. They had two sons Johann Jacob and Johann Counrath. He married Anna Sybilla Taubin on October 22, 1721 in Ilbesheim, Germany. They had five children: Johannes Philip (b. 14 Oct 1726, Johann Kilian (b. 24 Oct 1928), Anna Sybilla (b. 11 Dec 1732), Johan Jurg (b. 13 Sep 1737), and Catherina Elizabetha (b. 13 May 1741). From researcher Jan Robison, the immigration of the Ehrenhardt family to America has been documented:

Johannes Ehrenhardt and his son, Johann Philip, arrived in America aboard the ship Friendship on November 2, 1744 (PA German Pioneers, Vol. I, Page 356). The signature of Johannes on the oath list in Philadelphia was that of an older man with an unsteady hand,

while Johann Philip 's signature was smooth (Ibid, Vol. II, Page 375). In the 1740s. Johannes and Philip obtained land warrants in Bucks County, Pennsylvania (later became Northampton and finally Lehigh County), about ten miles from where Jacob settled ( PA Archives, Third Series, Vol. XXIV, Page 124). Additional land grants were issued adjacent to Johannes and Philip to Killian and Jacob in the 1750s. When Johannes died in 1757, his estate was administered by Johan Jürg (John George), the oldest son then living in Pennsylvania. The fact that other older sons existed, but were not in Pennsylvania, may indicate that Killian and Philip had migrated to North Carolina and obtained Granville grants by 1762.

Johan Jürg (John George) Ehrenhardt married Maria Margaretha Heilman in 1760 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. She was born October 6, 1737, in Bidersheim, Germany. Upon their arrival from Germany, they settled in Lowhill Township in Pennsylvania. They were members of the Weisenberg Church. They had the following known children: Maria Barbara (b. 15 Mar 1761), Johannes (b. 25 Feb 1765), Anna Mariah (b. 1766), Maria Elizabeth (b. Feb 1768), and Johan Jürg, Jr. (b. Dec 1768). After the death of Maria in 1768, Johan Jürg married Veronica Wildt in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Veronica was born in 1750 in Pennsylvania and died in 1823 in Tennessee. Their marriage produced the following children: Eva Elizabeth, Anderas Weinsenberg, Heinrich (Henry), Christina, Jacob, Christopher, and Sybilla. Johannes Ehrenhardt, son of John George and Margaretha, married Catherine Furr. She was born in 1765 in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina. They had six sons: James Allison (b. 1789), John, Jr. (b. 1790), Peter (b. 1791), George (b. 1792), Paul (b. 1794), and Solomon (b. 1795). Johannes died in 1795 and Catherine died in 1798. The children ranged in age from 3 to 9 years old. The orphaned boys were put in several homes to learn a trade as they grew older. On Aug 8, 1797, Tobias Furr qualified as guardian in the Rowan County, Court, for John, Peter, George, and James Aaronhart, "orphans of John Aaronhart," and on the same day Henry Furr qualified as guardian for Paul and Solomon Aaronhart, "orphans of John Aaronhart." On Feb 7, 1798, Tobias Furr, having died, Henry Furr qualified as guardian for George Aaronhart and Moses Brown (son of Michael Braun of the Old Stone House) qualified as guardian for John, Peter, and James Aaronhart. James Allison Earnhart, the first son of Johannes and Catherine, was born on January 3, 1789. He married Esther Long, who was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, on April 15, 1793. They had eight children, all born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina: David (b. 1815), John (b. 1813), George (b. 1820), James (b. 1820), Mary "Polly," Joseph J. (b. 1828), Esther Delilah (b. 1830), and William (b. 1836). Joseph J. Earnhart married Marguerette Swann and they had ten children. Their first child, James (Jr.) was born in Mississippi in about 1860. The rest of their children were: Jane (b. 1861), James Morganton (b. 1862), William (b. 1865), Esther Delilah (b. 1868), John K. (b. 1871), George (b. 1872), Rowan (b. 1875), Samuel D. (b. 1876), and Mary Etta born in Arkansas in 1878. Joseph died in 1893 and Margurette died in 1913 and were buried in East Shady Grove Cemetery near Greenbrier, Arkansas. Also buried in East Shady Grove were: James Morganton (d. 1901); Mary Etta (d. 1903); John K. (d. 1906); Samuel (d. 1906) and some of their families. Peter Glover was born in 1532 in Kent County, England. Peter and his wife, Mary, had a son named Richard, who was born in 1556 in London, England. Peter died on June 24, 1579.

Richard Glover married Mary Holmedon and perhaps had two other wives. He had several children, but the Arkansas branch of the Glover family descends from his son, Richard (Jr.), who was born on May 10, 1611 in Yeldon, Bedfordshire, England. He married Mary Booker in 1637 in Virginia, which establishes that he and Mary immigrated to America sometime before 1637. Richard (Jr.) died in 1684, supposedly "at sea in Sulawesi, Tengah, Indonesia." There is conflicting information as to the birthplaces of their children. Richard and Mary's first child, Richard II, was born in 1645 in Virginia, and also purportedly "died at sea in Sulawesi, Tengah, Indonesia" in 1698, about fourteen years after his father's death in the same place. Their other children were: Elizabeth (1646-1725), Thomas (b. 1647), Robert (b. 1630), William (b. 1653), Alice (b. 1655), Benjamin (b. 1657), and Samuel (b. 1661). William Glover, son of Richard and Mary, was born in Rappahannock County, Virginia, in 1653. He married Mary Burton, who was born in 1664, in Henrico County, Virginia. William died in 1713 and Mary died in 1692. Their son, William (Jr.) was born in 1678 and died on July 30, 1754, in Northampton County, North Carolina. He married Mary Norwood, daughter of William and Lydia (Jordan) Norwood. Mary was born in 1685 in Surry County, Virginia, and died in Northampton County, North Carolina, the same year as her husband. Their children were: John Marion (1707-1770), Sarah (1709—), William III (1711-1782), Benjamin (1714-1764), George (1715-1764), Lydia (1718-1740), and Joseph (1720-1784). William Glover III, son of William and Mary (Norwood) Glover, married Ann Lowery. She was born in 1714 in Northampton County, North Carolina. William and Ann had six children, all born in North Carolina: John Abner, Lowery, William II, Isham, Drury, and Elizabeth. The Faulkner County branch of the Glover family continues with Drury Glover, who was born in 1748, in Northampton, North Carolina. Drury married Rebecca Creswell and they had nine children. Their last child was Preston H. Glover, who was born in about 1780. He married Elizabeth Jackson. Both Preston and Elizabeth died in Georgia. Their children were: John Jackson, Matilda, Wiley Washington, Augustus Lawrence, Eli J., Elizabeth C., William Macajah, and Preston H. An article written by Edna Earl Williams Barger for the Faulkner County Historical Society's Faulkner County: Its Land and People, details the early lives of the sons of Preston and Elizabeth (Jackson) Glover:

Between 1872 and 1875, four Glover brothers, their wives and children, along with one sister and her husband, came to Arkansas by ox wagon and settled in Faulkner county. They came from Spring Place, Murray County, Georgia. Their home had been on the road that was used by Sherman and the Union Army as they marched to Atlanta during the Civil War. Many stories were handed down by word of mouth from one generation to another relative of their hardships during those days. It had been necessary for them to hide in caves as the troops passed through. They were often without food for the army took their provisions from the farms through which they traveled.

The brothers were John Jackson and his wife, Pamela Owens; William M.

and his wife, Mary Jane Cantrell; Augustus Lawrence and his wife, Evaline Bagley; and Preston Hampton and his wife, Caroline Cantrell. The sister was Elizabeth C. and her husband was William Taylor. Another brother, Wiley [Washington] did not

come to Arkansas because he died during the Civil War from an illness he contracted while in prison. He had been put in prison for refusing to be drafted to fight against the Union Army. His two sons, Henry and John Jackson, also came with the four brothers to Faulkner County.

Preston Hampton Glover married Lillian Ann Cantrell, a sister of Francis Dwight Cantrell, in 1874. From The History of the Greenbrier Baptist Association 1884-1926 , written by Alexander McPherson, it was said of Elder P. H. Glover that "...he was born on December 11, 1853, in Murray County, Georgia. He came to Arkansas in 1872 with his parents and attended school at Black Fork, a community east of Greenbrier. " He joined the Baptist church and was baptized by Isham R. Hall. Elder Glover, in turn, became a Baptist preacher and baptized about 1,200 people throughout his career. He and his wife lived and farmed in the East Shady Grove area and also operated a blacksmith shop. There are many members of the Glover family buried in East Shady Grove Cemetery, including the original four brothers who first came to Arkansas. Also buried in this beautiful cemetery is Miss Hattie Ann Kelso. As a member of the Faulkner County Historical Society, Miss Kelso was largely responsible for producing the Faulkner County Census of Cemeteries as of December 31, 1987. This book forms the basis of this publication and is an invaluable tool for genealogical researchers throughout Faulkner County. Her father, Clyde Cornelius, married Louise Glenn in 1902. They had nine children: Ruby, Doyle, Hattie, Don, Bernard, Chester, Dean, Bill Joe, and Howard.

James Kelso was born in 1785 in Tyrone County, Ireland. He immigrated to America and died on September 26, 1865, in Lawrence County, Tennessee. He married Keren Happuch Rea and they had a son named Oliver N. Kelso, who was born on October 13, 1810, in Henry County, Virginia. Oliver married Mary Carthart on May 13, 1834.
