Flotation agentsFlotation is designed to operate theseparation of one material from a mix ofseveral substances. To achieve this, thetarget product needs to be madeselectively oleophilic and this – as in thepotash flotation of potassium chloride –can be brought about by treatment withlong-chain amines i.e. compounds of typeROFAMIN T/TD, T40/TD40 or R .For maximum yield, we take care tosupply amines with chain lengthcompositions adjusted to specificconditions. Equally good results areobtained with ROFAMINs in the flotationof quartz, sands, feldspar and other acidicsiliceous minerals and rocks.

Anticaking agentsThe term anticaking agent refers tosubstances such as ROFAMINs that can prevent inorganic salts from caking. Their anticaking effect is based on ahydrophobic action displayed by fattyamines and their substantivity for thevarious salts, which enables salts andfertilizers to be made smooth and free-flowing. The effect thus produced is a lasting one and persists during the timeof storing, shipping and up to the time of further processing of the material. The fatty amine treatment is made using either the molten form or aqueousdispersions or aqueous fatty amine saltsolutions.

Corrosion inhibitorsROFAMINs and their salts are suitable foruse as anticorrosion agents as they can besubstantively absorbed onto metalsurfaces from either aqueous or oilysystems. The resulting coating firmlyadheres to and protects metal surfacesfrom aggressive liquids or gases. Verygood results have been obtained with type ROFAMINs T applied as internalanticorrosion treatment to steam andcondensate piping. Similarly, in thepetroleum industry, fatty amines and theirsalts give outstanding results in corrosionprevention. ROFAMIN salts added to fuelor mineral oil or other hydrocarbonsprevent corrosion caused by condensationmoisture in storage tanks.

Longtime R&D experience combined withadditional synergies from globaloleochemistry allows DHW to presentitself as a strong and reliable partner forindustrial cooperation. DHW in Rodlebenoffers starting from vegetable based rawmaterials tailor-made oleochemicalderivatives to be used in the production ofnutritional products, cosmetic andpharmaceutical goods as well as additivesfor industrial purposes.

Progress from Nature

Over the years, as worldwide

awareness for environmental issues

have grown, gentle processing

technologies and the use of renewable

resources have become increasingly

important. Our technological expertise

making use of natural ingredients for

the production of chemical substances

qualifies DHW at Rodleben to fulfill

its obligations in meeting the require-

ments for a sustainable, ecologically-

sound world. The concept of a chemical

production site based on human needs

and environmental awareness is already

reality within our company today.

DispersantsAddition of ROFAMINs including theirethoxylated forms or salts, in thepreparation of paints and printing inks, provides an effect that induces optimumwetting and dispersion of dye pigments.Even small percentages of ROFAMINsadded to formulations in the plastics andrubber industry can act as release agentsand as dispersants for fillers and pigments.

Fatty Amines

By 1931, Deutsche Hydrierwerke (DHW) inRodleben/Germany patented and initiatedthe world’s first production of fattyalcohols based on the evolving technologyof catalytic, high pressure hydrogenation. The experiences acquired by the DHWsince this time in field of hydrogenationtechnology resulted in a key innovation forthe company in 1960: the production offatty amines from natural raw materials. The initial use for primary amines was inthe flotation of potash ore and thenfollowed the establishment of a widerange of fatty amine compounds.Decades of experience in fatty aminemanufacture then led to the constructionof a new state-of-the-art production facilitywhich was built in 1997.

DHW fatty amines are made anddistributed under their trade name,ROFAMIN. Through extensive researchand development, continuous qualityassurance and customer information, theROFAMIN range has expanded to includeproducts for a large variety of applicationsin industrial and chemical processing.

In 1991, DHW was incorporated in theworldwide network of research andproduction facilities of our oleochemicalsgroup. With the creation of EcogreenOleochemicals in 2001, DHW reinforced itsposition as a global producer and supplierof primary fatty amines, unsaturated fattyalcohols, sorbitols and other sugar alcoholsas well as of a new range of speciality fattyesters and ethers.

Emulsifiers and AdditivesSalts of the ROFAMINs, i.e. their acetates, hydrochlorides, lactates and citrates havemanifold uses as substantive emulsifiers.Together with ethoxylated ROFAMINs,they enter the preparation of cationic oil-in-water type emulsions. These formulationshave two distinct features – excellent oilperfusion and oil adherence, a quality thatanionic or nonionic formulations couldnever achieve. Asphaltic bond emulsionsprepared with fatty amines and theirderivatives have gained great importancein roadbuilding. With them, roadbuildingmay be carried on even in wet and coldweather.

Fungicides, Bactericides, AlgicidesFatty amines and their salts have a broadspectrum of activity against bacteria andfungi, which explains why formulations andpreparations made with ROFAMINs fail toshow putrefaction or mould. Against manyorganisms, activity is optimal in a chainlength range of 12 to 16 carbon atoms.ROFAMIN K and KD or preparations basedon these are therefore most appropriatefor disinfection uses in the medical, technical and household areas. In order toachieve a satisfactory fungicidal effect, fatty amines are neutralized with acids andphenols having fungal activity.Combinations of fatty amine andquaternary ammonium salts derived fromit are known as algicides and prevent algaegrowth in swimming pools, cooling towersetc.

Substantivity – dominantprinciple of versatilityThe cationic compounds i.e. fattyamines and fatty amine derivatives, differ from anionic and nonionicsurfactants in that they have a markeddegree of substantivity for nearly allsolid surfaces. Their substantivity is acharacteristic property which allowsthem to be absorbed onto solids andform a firm cationic film on them sothat properties can be varied to fit inwith any desired application. Thusmaterials such as wool, hair, leather, cotton, synthetic fibres, plastics, dyepigments, rocks, metals etc. can betreated with fatty-amine-based cationicformulations to acquire usefulproperties for quite specificapplications. Substantivity impartsversatility in product application and thisreflects in fields including

• anticorrosion agents for oil, aqueous media, and lubricants,

• fabric softeners, antistatic agents,

• bonding and wetting agents for varnishes, paints, adhesives, dispersions and bitumen/asphalt,

• textile, leather, rubber, dyeing and washing auxiliaries,

• hair conditioners and disinfectants,

• flotation agents and anticaking products etc.

ROFAMIN formulations deny no wishesManufactured to meet highstandards of qualityLong standing production know-how and a production technology specificallyengineered to meet fatty amine qualitystandards are a guarantee of products ofthe highest grade. Being concerned withregard to both technology and ecology, wehave committed ourselves to a strategy forquality that accords with the tradition andweight of an established brand of productsknown as ROFAMINs. As a result, there isa dedicated high level of quality thatassures processing security and productsafety as well as marketable end productswith a competitive edge.

Uncompromising qualities –optimum benefitROFAMINs and their salts are invaluable interms of substantivity and indispensable ina wide range of uses of cationicsurfactants. They have entered numerousproducts and industrial processes andmany of these would now beinconceivable without them. In addition tothis, ROFAMINs are appealing anddesirable for use as raw materials inchemical processing. As primary fatty amines, they are a keyelement in the synthesis of secondary andtertiary amines and of quaternaryammonium compounds. ReactingROFAMINs with ethylene oxide giveswater-soluble products which, unlike thewater-insoluble free fatty amines, can exertdistinct substantive properties as early asat the basic stage – a crucial advantage insome specific textile auxiliaries.Primary fatty amines are also basicmaterials for propylene diamines, with aprime use as cationic emulsifiers inasphaltic road construction. Apart fromthese, there are many other synthesesthat can use saturated or unsaturated typefatty amines and this, of course, highlightsthe role of ROFAMINs in synthesis.

Physical characteristicsROFAMINs at room temperature, can beeither liquid, pastes or solids depending ontheir chain length, and have a characteristicsmell. While fatty amines are virtuallyinsoluble in water, their hydrochlorides, acetates, formiates etc. as well asethoxylated compounds at more than 5 moles EO can readily be dissolved inwater. Most of the fatty amines and theirderivatives dissolve in organic solventssuch as alcohols, hydrocarbons, oils etc.
