Have We Met ? I’m Fatma al Hashemi, a 20-year-old graphic designer and photographer, I’ve been practicing graphic design since the first Adobe Photoshop was created, I was young and unaware of what I was doing, but its one reason the portfolio in your hands actually exists! Graphic design is not only my profession it’s also my passion in life! I breathe-in creativity and exhale idea’s that develop into an artwork. Design is one of the essential things that nurture me in life and make me who I ‘am. So back to my question, have we met? Let’s hope this is the start of a journey that could answer this question.

Page 5: Fatma Al Hashemi

As an ambitious artist, my designs reflect the expressed needs and desires of my clients, a reflection of their vision in the language of art and design. My work revolves around aspects that build up my client’s identity, after all an artwork should obtain a specific message and idea, which is the reason of this design to be created. I live in a world surrounded with logos, business cards, posters and a lot more things that can be created through design, which is why I happily live and remain in the world of design.

My objective in life doesn’t end with success itself, but it ends with the satisfied smile I draw on every person who seeks my assistance in giving his or her work a unique identity and design.

A design is not just a shape, line, curve or all these combined; It’s a whole new identity that reflects the faces of humankind.

This poster is aiming to promote Al Khor, a heritage site in Dubai in where it still strongly positioning itself as a historical area that cher-ishes every aspects of the UAE rich history. I chose a fun and dynamic visual languages to represent the es-sence of the place. Al Khor is vibrant and energetic place. I chose typog-raphy and solid shapes all arranged to represent the tag line I chose “where the present meets the past” It connects past and present and cre-ates a harmony and vibrancy. I have attempted to present Al Khor as the significant connecting point where everyone can meet and its’ organic culture contributes to Dubai urban landscape

Through my design process of creat-ing a branding set for Al Khor, The map was considered important to complete the task and make a whole identity that deifnes it, which made me create a simple tourist map that helps to guide and also show a fun and enjoyable side of Al Khor.

Once Upon A Date Package“ ”For this project, we were asked to de-sign a package that promotes the Date Honey Festival. This package will be a giveaway that holds in it a jar of date honey. The package was created to con-sider all aspects of the design process, research, and principles.

There is always an end to every great story and the idea for this package is to create a short meaningful narrative about dates. The title “Once Upon a Date” pulls the viewer into the package using a storybook approach. The name suggests a casual and personal perspec-tive about the product and creates a unique and engaging experience for the consumer. The date-honey package uses illustration, typography and colour to attract an audience of both UAE resi-dents and International visitors.

Page 15: Fatma Al Hashemi

12

Design Process: The overall design process began with conducting re-search on date-honey, identifying a package to suit the brand-story, and creating an appropriate narrative. I began by sketching the overall package, defining the dieline, and determining what information to place on each side. The location of the “Date Honey Festival” in the UAE meant it was important to include both Arabic and English in the final design. I choose an Arabic poem that compares dates to gold, telling readers to not underestimate the value of a date, even though it weighs less than gold. For this reason, the intention of the design was to provide a sense of surprise by combining a simple exterior pack-age with a rich interior design. The use of playful typography was combined with natural colours to enhance the Arabic poem, while giv-ing a feeling of tradition and design harmony. The narrative begins with “Once upon a date” on the top of the date-honey jar and concludes with a message found underneath the jar that reads «This is how my story ends”.

13

Deck of Cards Package“ ”In this project we were asked to cre-ate a whole suit for a deck of cards and choose a theme for the design. We were divided into groups and each of the groups were asked to choose a general theme and then each member of the team chose a specific cetegory under it. Our team chose animals as the general theme and I chose to design my cards with a specific focus on birds. Our suits were randomly assigned and I was given diamonds to use for my chosen theme.

Page 17: Fatma Al Hashemi

14

Birds are creatures that were meant to be free, their wings glide through the sky giving us hope and serenity. Whenever I look at a bird in flight, I cant help but wish I was the one who has been set free. The title I created for my deck of cards is “ Would you fly with me?” because it represents the feeling of freedom that comes with the inspirational idea of flight. The package uses only typography to illustrate this idea in an elegant and textural manner. My cards were designed by integrating collages and brush strokes, along with the birds I chose to represent each card.I chose the rooster as a King because of his royal appearance in stature and pride. Although he cant fly as high as other birds do, he still has what it takes to be a King.

Self-Promotional Package“ ”For this project, I created a promo-tional package that represents me as a person and as a graphic designer. I chose to create a package that will be given to the client as a thank-you gift at the end of my work with them. As a graphic designer and as a per-son, I love to offer people something more. For this reason, I thought that a chocolate giveaway could serve as a small gesture of gratitude to a client once a project we are working on comes to completion. The package will superimpose two boxes in order to display two differ-ent products; the CD with the work I’ve done for them and the box containing the chocolate giveaway. My promotional package is a simple way to share love and my ideas to the costumers who approach me for graphic design work.

Page 21: Fatma Al Hashemi

18

A simple thank-you does make a difference and the title of the pack-age reflects how glad I was when they considered me. The design of the package is simple; I chose a combination of colors I like along with a simple illustration that defines me as a designer who enjoys cute and casual styles. The phrase “shar-ing is caring” is written on top of the chocolate box, since chocolate is a source of happiness. No matter how small or big the gesture is, the message within this package de-fines how much I appreciate people considering me to work with them.

I created two posters each defines a city, Dubai and San Francisco were different and similar in the same time, i used typography to create a harmony that will be enjoyable to see. I also created two different writings for both to say a little more about both cities.

Author, illustrator, and designer of the bilingual children’s e-book The research behind the book focuses on introducing a world of a child with Autism, where I found people unaware fully of how an Autism child thinks and acts; to keep it child friendly I reflected an imaginary world without barriers, because people with autism are known to be ultimate day dream-ers and mostly their mind has no limits to what they create and visualize. The e-book was displayed as part of the exhibition “Change in Motion: A Storybook Exhibition” held at Zayed University from May 9th – 16th, 2013.

6pm in Dubai “ ”6pm in Dubai is a photography exhibition that showcased the different aspects that fill my life with joy and energy, the title was chosen based on the two parts of my daily life, the part that starts early in the morning when I used to go either to the university or at that time, work; and the other part where my passion comes to life, the time when i enjoy my day the most, 6pm. January 15, 2013, my first solo exhibition was launched at Momentum Dubai in DIFC. The exhibition showcased a series of photos that reflects what I’m passionate about, most of the photos were taken at 6pm which made the title easier to relate to.
