On Wednesday May 4, 2016 during a Special Called Business Meeting the First Baptist Church, Elkins WV

confirmed the recommendation of the Pastoral Search Committee by electing to the position of Pastor, L. Scott

Hamby of Liberty, Missouri. Scott completed a Theological Studies degree in Christian Doctrine at Southwest

Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri and has been licensed to preach since 1992. He and his wife Julie; a high

school math teacher in Missouri, have three daughters ages, 16, 11 and 8.

In bi-vocational work, Scott served as a Police Officer and Sergeant for 20 years until his informal retirement in

2015, and is currently a Vice-President of U.S. Bank in Corporate Security. Scott and his family are active at the

Northern Hills Baptist Church near Kansas City in Holt, Missouri.

Scott was called to preach as a teenager and after some time resisting the

priority of the call, God moved in a way that could not be denied. In

high school, Scott began preaching in churches around Kansas City and

dedicated his college education to theology and evangelism under the

tutelage of Dr Jack Stanton. His preaching reached through out the state

of Missouri during college and after. In more recent years he is the

founder of Scott Hamby Evangelistic Association which is involved

with preaching revivals, bible conferences, seminars, retreats and pulpit

supply for churches.

As our Pastor Scott, " I believe the Lord will use my education, work

experiences, and ministry history together in furthering God's will and work

at First Baptist Church and the Elkins Community. I look forward to the opportunity to meet and grow our under-

standing of how God may bring us together in church and the community for Kingdom advancement. To God be

the glory for his leadership and guidance as we all seek to be in His will on this matter."

New Beginnings

Joshua 1:1-9

I am excited for First Baptist Elkins and newly called Scott Hamby! This isn’t just a coincidence that Scott is going to be your Pastor. God has been preparing him for some time to be your leader. Just like Joshua, God chose him to replace Moses to lead his people into a journey of promise land. The act of God’s will in His calling included a long period of preparation for spiritual leadership. During this time Joshua experienced the glory, the power, the providential care of God in his life. Scott has been in preparation as well and he will come with some religious experience that will be beneficial to the congregation here.

Interestingly, God told Joshua something very special in the new beginning. He said, “Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (vv. 7-9)

This is great advice not only to a new pastor but also to the congregation as well. So how do we prepare for a New Beginning at First Baptist Elkins? 1) Be strong and courageous; 2) Keep the Bible at the center of activity and 3) meditate on it and put to practice what it says.

If we do this, God will prosper the New Beginning! Then you'll get where you're going; then you'll succeed. We will continue to pray for Pastor Scott, Julie and family as they start this journey with us. We want to express our thanks and gratitude to the members of the Pastoral Search Committee: Jim Bialek, Chairman; Mary de Courten, Brian Kalar, Adam Kittle, Beth Markley, Jackie Potts, and Joe Wolfe for their year-long dedication in finding our New pastor. "Well done, Good and Faithful Servants."

The Shine Effect is a full-time, energetic 3-piece Christian rock band from Jacksboro, TN striving to answer the

call God has placed on their lives to serve Him and minister to others through music. The band consists of Josh

Roberts (vocals/guitar), wife Christa Roberts (drums), brother Ben Roberts (bass/vocals), and Ben’s wife Maria

Roberts (merchandise/lighting/sound).

The band released their first full length self-recorded album “The Life. The Hope. The Journey.” in May 2011

and since then they have played over 450 concerts with many great bands and artists. In March of 2013, The

Shine Effect released their 6 song album “With Open Eyes” which was recorded at The Sound Lair in Knoxville,

TN. As of January 2015,

The Shine Effect gets their name from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:14-16. “You are the light of

the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. In-

stead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine be-

fore others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

The Shine Effect has taken this verse to heart and tries to truly be that shining light in a dark world. Their pas-

sion is to encourage the church and reach out to the lost through music and love, while making many new

friends along the way!
