McGarry House Day 2020 On Tuesday 1 st September, we celebrated McGarry House Day. Father Marian celebrated Mass in the Library for students and staff in McGarry House, to reflect upon the values of Peace, Solidarity and Witness. Frank McGarry was a lay Catholic missionary who was a strong advocate for the welfare of Aboriginal people and the needs of others. We enjoyed a Sausage Sizzle lunch prepared by the McGarry Student Representatives and Mrs Sobey, our Canteen Manager. Thank you to the staff and students who assisted in the preparation and celebration of McGarry House Day. Father’s Day We wish all our fathers a very happy Father’s Day and hope that Sunday is a great family day.

McGarry House Day 2020 On Tuesday 1st September, we celebrated McGarry House Day. Father Marian celebrated Mass in the Library for students and staff in McGarry House, to reflect upon the values of Peace, Solidarity and Witness. Frank McGarry was a lay Catholic missionary who was a strong advocate for the welfare of Aboriginal people and the needs of others.

Year 12 Retreat On Thursday 27th and Friday 28th August, the Graduating Class of 2020 embarked on a journey to the Swan Valley Adventure Camp in Middle Swan for their Retreat. The Retreat was an alternating series of input sessions and small group discussions. Meals, prayer and time for personal space were woven throughout these sessions and created reflective moments, a relaxed environment, community growth and good conversation.

The key threads in the retreat included:

• Simplicity and stillness.

• Personal Reflection – looking within.

• The Spirit of Irene – Peace.

• Transition – preparing for an inevitable journey beyond school.

• Growth through sharing in a Catholic community.

The Year 12 Retreat was a heart-warming experience, with memories that Year 12 students will treasure forever. On behalf of the Graduating Class of 2020, we would like to thank Mr Marshall, Mrs Smith, Mr Gullen and our Year 12 Care Group Teachers for enabling our students to slow down and reflect upon their past, present and future directions. Academic Scholarship 2021 Congratulations to Keeno Uriarte from East Butler Primary School, as the recipient of the Academic Scholarship Year 7 2021.

Chickenpox We have been informed that two students have been diagnosed with chickenpox. The North Metropolitan Health Service has recommended that you check your child’s immunisation record. If your child is immunocompromised or shows symptoms of chickenpox please consult your General Practitioner. Please notify the College if your child contracts the disease. Social Science

Geography Fieldwork Excursion The Year 11 students from Miss Varady’s Geography class, have been investigating the production of wine as part of their investigation of the wine industry. Students were able to visit Upper Reach Winery in the Swan Valley. While there, students were able to tour the vineyard and learn about the complexities of climate, soil and location that influence the varieties of grapes that are grown.

Students were taken on a tour through the winery and shown the process of manufacturing wine from collecting the grapes, collecting the juice and the processes involved in fermenting the wine to achieve consistency and quality products. The owner, Laura, gave a comprehensive overview of the processes and inputs required and shared her experiences over the 26 years her family have run Upper Reach. Modern History Fieldwork Excursion Year 11 Modern History ATAR and Year 12 Modern History General students who have been investigating Nazi Germany, travelled to the Holocaust Institute where they were given a comprehensive account of the events in the Holocaust. The first half of the workshop provided a detailed context for the rise of Nazi Germany by exploring post World War 1 Germany. The intricacies and impact of propaganda were investigated and the subsequent demonisation, discrimination and exclusion were discussed. The second half of the workshop examined the anatomy of the Holocaust from the outbreak of World War 2, life in the Ghettos, Einsatzgruppen and the “Final Solution” to Liberation. The theme of Resistance and the resilience of the human spirit in the Holocaust was explored as well as democracy, discrimination and the world today. This leads on to investigating the importance of Upstanders and the Righteous Among the Nations which inspires, and prompts facilitated discussion on social justice, moral compass and our responsibilities today. Students also heard a moving testimony from a Holocaust Survivor.

Drama Night

Please join us for a fun-filled evening at Drama night! There will be acts from Drama Club, ATAR Drama, and Year 10 Drama. Performances range from musical theatre and slapstick comedy to thought-provoking and tear-jerking dramas. There will be a short intermission with soft drinks and snacks available for purchase. Come along and support your peers and loved ones.

Sport ACC Basketball Update Congratulations to our junior boys’ basketball team who made it through to the grand final of the ACC Championship this week. The Championship pits the winners of each ACC sub-association competition against each other in a knock out draw. Premiers in CAS, and after convincing wins over CBC Fremantle and Swan Christian College, the boys encountered tough opposition in Corpus Christi College on Tuesday night at Warwick Stadium. Against a quality team, our boys fought right to the end and were fantastic ambassadors for the College at such a significant ACC event. The team was coached by Mr Woodhouse and team members included Stevan Merenda, Zac Daniel, Addison Squire, Ashton Ifould, Duol Simon, Nahom Gunsa and Adolfo Ushla. On Monday night, our senior boys faced off against CBC Fremantle in the quarter finals of their competition. After being in touch at half time, the boys fell away in the second half but should be proud of their effort in reaching this stage of the competition. We thank Mr Hendricks and Mr Carbone for their work with this team.

ACC Athletics Live Stream The ACC Athletics Carnival, Monday 14th September, will be having track events live streamed. Any parents unable to attend the carnival, who would like to view the live stream, are asked to email me at [email protected] or by direct message to receive the link. Please note that the live stream won’t be available by searching online. 2020 Five-a-side Soccer Competition The semi-final line-up is now complete following the conclusion of the remaining group fixtures this week. The two Year 7 teams, (who can play with seven players on the pitch at any one time against their older opponents) get their opportunity to challenge for a place in the Grand Final. Second reading: Romans 13 8-10 Gospel: Matthew 18: 15-20 Jesus said to his disciples: "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that 'every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again, amen, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us the importance of dealing with conflict and outlines a process for resolving conflict in the community. Jesus wants us to love and forgive each other. He says, if someone sins against you, go and tell them how they have hurt you. Jesus wants issues resolved in a way that both parties respect and maintain the dignity of each other; but sometimes we are distracted by pride or selfishness that we refuse to confess our sin. If we take a look at our past conduct have, we really tried to help our neighbour? Have we given a good example of a truly Christian way of living? Have we offered advice and encouragement when it was needed, and correction in private where that was possible? In our dealings with others we must see them as sisters and brothers, children of God like each of us because we are all part of a family in Christ. Mrs Daphne Peters Campus Ministry

Football and Soccer Academies

The College has well established Football and Soccer Academies for girls and boys for all Year levels. The Academy programs are based on scientifically supported training methodologies and curriculum. The Academies provide a culture of resilience, respect and achievement, as well as opportunities to network and experience the football and soccer industries. Message to families from the WA Police As our children's education is vital to their future and the future of our community, in a bid to ensure that students are at school every day, ‘Keeping Kids in School’ was implemented in 2008.

Under this program your child will be refused service by local businesses displaying a sign, similar in look to this handout, in their shop front or entrance during school hours. These businesses have the right to refuse to serve school-aged students who are not at school during normal school hours if they do not have a valid leave pass from the College, as the one below.

The College will be contacted immediately by shop owners if students who are absent from school without an appropriate leave pass are found in their premises.

Irene McCormack Catholic College is a part of this WAPOL initiative and is thus in partnership with Ocean Keys Shopping Centre, Farmer Jacks Shopping Precinct and all shops and shopping centres around the Butler, Merriwa, Jindalee, Ridgewood, Clarkson and Quinns Rocks areas.
