In Memoriam - Fr. Robert A. Lange
From a day of reflection Father Lange gave for the Knights of Columbus and their wives. He shared a photograph taken of his home in Fort Valley with the following story. The room he used as a chapel was on the second floor in the exact spot where the "star" appears. The photo was taken on a cloudy, dismal day so there was no possibility of a reflection on the window of the room.
He stated, “Look at the picture and ask yourself where that wonderful light is coming from.” Fr. Lange’s note on picture: "In May of this year (2010) Bishop Loverde gave me permission to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in my chapel –The chapel is on the second floor of my home. The Eucharist had been reserved in the chapel less than a week when this picture was taken from the front porch of a neighbor’s home. The person taking the picture was enamored by the beauty of the valley and decided to take a picture for her collection. When she aimed
the camera towards the valley and tried to focus for the picture, she says the light coming from my house was so bright she said it was difficult trying to look into camera to view the picture to be taken.” He said, “My opinion is that Our Lord wanted to give us a beautiful reminder of His true presence in the Holy Eucharist – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity! It is a reminder that he is with us always, that we are never alone, that he is the Son of God and the Son of Man. It is a vivid reminder that he truly suffered and died on the cross and that he is present in this world – until his Second Coming – in this most special manner - the Eucharist.” Source: http://lesfemmes-thetruth.blogspot.com
Father Robert A. Lange died after a long illness on May 4, 2015.
Upon his retirement in 2007, he took up residence in
Shenandoah County

James Toth & The Guadalupe Free Clinic
Father Jerome Magat – Parochial Vicar, St. William of York – 2010-2013
SOURCE: Katie Scott | Catholic Herald 5 May 2015, extracts
“The Colonial Beach clinic serves the poor with a team of dedicated volunteers”
James Toth just joined Fr. Widmer Council #7877 and mentioned that he would be busy one day,
missing an opportunity to obtain the 2nd Degree. He was going to volunteer at the clinic. He states,
“First, I could effectively serve the poor in Westmoreland County by assisting them in qualifying and
receiving medical care and medicine. Second, this would provide me one more way of helping others
in memory of my beloved wife, Rena, who died over a year ago. Since Rena's sudden death, life has
been very difficult for me. To cope with this, I have become involved in volunteer efforts at SWOY by
donating my time and efforts. My wife was a teacher and I felt good trying to assist other teachers.’
I realized it is not so much what we do in life that matters, it is not simply what job we have or what we
give or where we volunteer . . . . "It is what we become" when we do these things (Matthew
Kelly). Donating my time would certainly not hurt. After all, life is short and every day is one step
closer to eternity. I thought I'd give it a try.
As Father DeMartino (pastor of SWOY) says "We have only this moment and eternity". So make every
moment count. I will return for training. Wouldn't you, if you realized eternity might be closer than you
think?
As far as assistance at the clinic is concerned, volunteers are needed in the following areas: Medical
supervisor, Medical physicians, Nurses, Lab Technicians, Administrative Coordinator, Pharmacist,
Pharmacist Technician, Receptionists, Interpreters and Eligibility Coordinators.
The Guadalupe Free Clinic, which operates on the grounds of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, was
founded in 2004 by Father Jerome A. Magat, then parochial vicar, to serve the working poor and
uninsured in Colonial Beach and Westmoreland County. They opened its door on May 21, 2005. How
to help
Mail donations to the Guadalupe Free Clinic, P.O. Box 275, Colonial Beach, VA 22443 or email Greg

Drive, Stafford. Registration is at 8 a.m., shotgun start at 10 a.m.

HONOR AMERICA CORPS & SK Bill McCarthy
Past State Deputy William J. (Bill) McCarthy passed away on May 8, 2015. Here is a link to his obituary: http://www.covenantfuneralservice.com/obituaries/william-j-mccarthy/ . He will be missed by his wife Joan, his family and all who knew him.
If you didn’t know Bill McCarthy, his obituary introduces you to a man who was a patriot and a truly accomplished Catholic gentleman. If you knew Bill McCarthy, you know that there was so much more to this brother Knight than any obituary could possibly convey.
Bill McCarthy left all Knights of Columbus a very unique legacy, the Honor America Corps (http://www.honoramericacorps.org/). The objective of the Corps as described on their website is: “The Rappahannock Assembly #1613 Knights of Columbus has instituted an Honor America Program to reinforce, through education and by example, a deeper comprehension and broader knowledge of the heritage and traditions represented by the flags of our Nation. To accomplish this, they have formed an Honor America Corps open to any Knight of Columbus, regardless of degree, of any Council or Assembly in the Order. These men participate in visits to the school districts of Central Virginia and before the public at large to offer a clearer understanding about the meaning of our flag.”
Father Widmer Council sponsored one of the Honor America Corps Flags. The most memorable Honor America Corps event we participated in was the funeral mass for Colonel Paul Kelly held at St. William of York Catholic Church in Stafford, VA on Wednesday Jan. 31, 2007. Colonel Kelly was a member of our parish before deploying to Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed Colonel Kelly joined the Knights of Columbus.
Here is an extract from an e-mail Bill McCarthy sent following Colonel Kelly’s funeral: “There were 1,000 people in attendance and well over 200 were Knights of Columbus --- a superb expression of support for Colonel Kelly’s family! The Knights of Columbus of the Virginia District as well as those of the Jurisdiction at large can be justifiably proud of their efforts to honor Colonel Kelly. They were at their finest in a moment which now belongs to the history of our Order. The Honor America Corps was privileged to have participated and the more than 100 Sir Knights along with all other Knights who sacrificed their time to be present to honor Colonel Kelly, are to be commended for their incomparable display of fraternity and patriotism!”

2015-2016 Theme
“Living a Fraternal Journey” Stephen Paul Raschke Sr.- Virginia State Deputy
My theme for this year is: Living a Fraternal Journey, Live, Know, Share our Faith. As we live our daily journey and as we share our faith, I am encouraging everyone to make a commitment to learn more about our religion, its faith, principles, and laws. If we don’t know our faith how can we explain it to those that we want to share it with, our families, community and potential brothers? I would ask that each Brother take some time this year to learn more about what being a Catholic is all about, it is not just going to Church on Sunday, it is the daily journey as we depart the parking lot. Over the next year I am encouraging a number of activities by councils to help each Knight and his family have a better appreciation of our Catholic Heritage. By living, knowing and sharing our faith we can continue to make our council, parish and community a better place to live, grow and raise our Knights of Columbus family. As each Brother Knight and your family travels the journey of life, appreciate all that is around you and be the example that shows the world what being Catholic and a Knight of Columbus is all about. Living a Fraternal Journey Live, Know, Share our Faith.
Final expense policies for older knights are another relatively low cost product that everyone needs. A $15,000 policy takes away the fear of who will take care of final expenses. Every husband and wife should have one.

Holy Trinity Assembly No. 2520
Greetings Fellow Sir Knights!
A message from the Faithful Navigator – Alan Arena
First I would like to congratulate the new slate of Officers for Fr.
Widmer Council No. 7877! I wish you all the very best in the
upcoming Fraternal year! I will work hard with the Assembly in
supporting your Council events when there is need of the 4th Degree
Honor Guard or escort.
To those of you who are also 4TH Degree members I look forward to
working with you in also supporting Holy Trinity Assembly activities.
To those of you who have recently completed the 3rd Degree I
salute you and hope that you continue your journey into full
Knighthood and pursue the 4th Degree on 31 October 2015.
Please let me pass on a quote our new Worthy Master Tom
Trudeau: “The mission of the Fourth Degree is to foster the
spirit of patriotism by promoting responsible citizenship and a
love of and loyalty to the Knights' respective countries through
active membership in local Fourth Degree Assemblies. The 4th
degree fosters the spirit of patriotism in members and the
community at large and encourages active Catholic citizenship.
The Sir Knights of the Virginia District are proud to carry on
this tradition. Members of the Fourth Degree serve as honor
guards at civic and religious functions, an activity that has
brought worldwide recognition to the Knights of Columbus.”
I will be passing on to you more details of the 4th Degree and Holy
Trinity Assembly during the upcoming months.
Vivat Jesus!

VISIT TO NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT - By Brother Marty Sprick
Having in-laws in New Haven, Connecticut makes for a convenient opportunity to visit the Knights of Columbus Museum at Supreme Headquarters as well as Council 1 at St. Aedan’s and Council 10705 at St. Mary’s, where Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney founded our Order in 1882.
On 31 May, I attended Mass at St. Aedan’s and was given a brief tour of San Salvador Council’s meeting chamber by their outgoing Grand Knight, Michael Rogers.
The evening of 1 June, Father Michael J McGivney Council graciously welcomed me for their annual election and bratwurst dinner. In addition to the election, they discussed several accomplishments and milestones. Their Columbia Squires provided a travelling Mass kit to an active duty Army Catholic Chaplain, Father Christopher Opara, currently stationed in Baghdad, Iraq.
Grand Knight, Bobby Rauch, reminded all present that 14 August of this year is the 125th anniversary of the death of our Founder. Father McGivney Council also hosts tours of St Mary’s and the Museum at Supreme Headquarters for those individuals or Councils desiring a guided tour.
I highly encourage any travelling Knight to take the opportunity to visit with any council having a meeting in the area they might be visiting this summer on vacation or at any time they are out of our area.
