MAY 13, 2018—ASCENSION OF THE LORD

LIVE THE LITURGY

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

We are called to be missionaries. Jesus said to his disciples: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature." Proclaiming the Gospel means looking out at my brothers and sisters and choosing to walk with them on their journey of life. It means having a listening, loving presence that allows the Holy Spirit to work in and through us. In this way we can show them-not only in speech, but in action-the difference a relationship with God and a life of faith really makes. Even though Jesus has ascended to the Father, he still remains with us helping us proclaim the mission of the Gospel. Are we willing to allow him to do so?

MEMORIAL DAY MASS

MONDAY, MAY 28th

A 9:00a.m. liturgy will be celebrated on Memorial Day, May 28th. We would like to remember those individuals from our parish who have died in service for our country. If a member of your family has died in the Armed Forces, please complete the form below and place it in the collection basket or drop it off at the Rectory Office by Sunday, May 20th. Weather permitting, the 9:00a.m. liturgy will be followed by a flag-raising ceremony led by the parish Cub Scout Troop. Please plan to attend.

ROSARY FOR MARY

The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please join us as we honor Mary on Friday, May 18th, by saying the rosary at the outdoor shrine at 7:00p.m. (Please bring a lawn chair as

limited seating is available.) In the event of inclement weather, the rosary will be said in the church. What is a rosary? The rosary is the recitation of the Hail Mary, Our Father and other traditional pray-ers in a particular order. Don't own a rosary? Don't know how to say the rosary? Please join us anyway, and we will provide you with what you need.

2017 MASS INTENTION BOOK

The 2017 Mass Intention Book still has openings. Each parishion-er household may have 4 Mass

Intentions (one weekend and three weekdays). The Mass stipend is $10.00.

8TH GRADE GRADUATION— MAY 19TH

The 8th grade class of St. Leo the Great School will celebrate their graduation at the conclusion of the 4:00p.m. Mass on Saturday, May 19th. Please join the rest of the parish in congratulat-

ing these young men and women and wishing them success as they prepare to attend high school in the fall.

First Reading: Acts 1:1-11

Today’s passage takes us back to the beginning verses of the Acts of the Apostles and sets forth the themes that Luke is going to develop throughout this, the longest book of the New Testament. His major theme is the role of the Holy Spirit, who enables the apostles to be effective witnesses to Jesus. The Holy Spirit is mentioned 57 times in the Acts of the Apostles.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-13

Today’s passage from Ephesians was chosen because of its reference to Jesus’ ascent to heaven, which is contrasted with his descent to the dead. Early Christians believed that those who died before the coming of Jesus awaited redemption in a shadowy existence described here as the lower regions of the earth. It is our Christian tradition that immediately after his death, Jesus went to these people to announce that they had been saved.

Dear Parishioners,

Next Saturday, May 19th, our 8th grade students will be

processing into the church at the 4pm Mass as they graduate

from our parish school. They will receive their diplomas after

Mass has ended so we will wait for everyone to leave the

church before we begin that brief ceremony. We are always

sad to see our students move on but are grateful for the

opportunity to have given them a great education in the

atmosphere of faith. May God guide their journey through

high school.

We welcome Joshua Kindry into our Catholic Faith

through the Holy Sacrament of Baptism this Sunday. May

God bless those who have taken upon themselves the respon-

sibility of “training him in the practice of the faith.”

Please bare with me as I call upon your generosity this

weekend for two very worthy causes. The Knights of Colum-

bus have asked my permission to ask for donations at the

doors of the church after Mass for their annual “Measure Up”

campaign which donates money for mentally challenged

adults and children organizations. Please consider offering

them something for this good purpose.

This weekend we will also have our Catholic Charities

Follow-up Appeal. You may remember that in the last couple

of years, this follow-up appeal was made for the sake of

those who may not have been present during the first appeal

back in February. However it has taken a new direction so

that this particular appeal is made on behalf of a specific need

in the Catholic Charities organization. This year, all funds

raised this weekend will be used to expand addiction

treatment services across our diocese. The news is filled with

stories of increasing opioid addiction (and deaths) and so the

need for such treatment services has never been higher. I ask

you to please consider making some kind of donation to this,

especially if you did not already make a pledge to Catholic

Charities earlier. Thank you in advance for reaching out to

help those who are addicted. “Whatsoever you do...”

We moved Fr. Vesely into his apartment at Mount Alver-

na this past Wednesday. This assisted living wing will be

different from what he’s had in skilled nursing as he will

have his own space with more privacy, and will eat with

fellow residents in a beautiful dining room which provides a

menu of options for each meal. Though he is no longer in

residence here at St. Leo’s, he will always be considered an

important part of our parish community. We have plans for

him to celebrate Mass here soon.

Finally, at each Mass I will ask God’s blessing on all the

women of our parish who act as mother, grandmother or god-

mother. Though we take our mothers seriously, we can also

smile as we think of them. Maybe this will help: Mom No. 1:

How do you get your sleepy-head son up in the morning?

Mom No. 2: I just put the cat on the bed. Mom No. 1: How

does that help? Mom No. 2: The dog’s already there.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES

May Follow-Up Parish Appeal to Help People Recover from Opioid Addiction

THIS WEEKEND, we will be participating in an important Follow-Up Parish Appeal for Catholic Charities. Funds raised through this effort will be used to expand treatment and prevention services to fight the opioid

crisis that has a grip on our families, friends and communities. In 2017, nearly 1,200 people in our diocese died of drug overdoses. With your help, Catholic Charities will be able to expand their reach into every county and provide help and hope to those suffering from addiction. DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT! All new, increased and additional gifts returned in the In-Pew envelopes this weekend or donated online at www.CatholicCommunity.org/Challenge will be matched up to $100,000. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by drug addiction. Prayerfully consider the impact you can have on their recovery and please give as generously as possible. Contact Karen Joyce at 216-696- 6525 ext. 1910. Thank you for making a difference.
