As a Bilkent Holding company, TEPE BETOPAN established BETOPAN factory in 1984 at Ankara Beytepe Facilities with the nameTEPE GROUP as it was called at the time, and pioneered the production of cement-bonded particle boards in TURKEY. In 1999,the factory was renovated using state of the art systems and its capacity was doubled. In 2001, the other Cement-Bonded Particle

board factory in ARHAVI was acquired making the Group the sole manufacturer in Turkey, and one of the leading manufacturers inthe world with a capacity of 67,500 m3/year. In 2008, the transfer of the production line in Arhavi to our facilities at Bilkent, Ankaraunified the production resulting in a stronger production facility and boosting the sales both locally and globally.

Developed by diligent and unrelenting in-house research and development, “BETOPANPLUS” was added in the year 2000 to ourproduct range as a more stable and durable BETOPAN. Thereby, TEPE BETOPAN hailed as a technology developer company bystarting the production and sales of BETOPANPLUS along with the “cement-bonded particle board” BETOPAN.

After adding BETOPANPLUS to its product range along with its first product BETOPAN, TEPE BETOPAN launched the “wood-textured YALIPAN” and “stone textured TASONIT” boards.

TEPE BETOPAN, as an entity, made significant contributions to enhancing the quality and, widening the usage range of boardsthanks to the dynamism it has drawn from research and development over time and the respect it shows for production, and con-tinues to do so.

1.1 - CEMENT-BONDED PARTICLE BOARD

Cement and wood have been used as two fundamental elementsof construction throughout history.

Cement and wood had been used as two separate constructionmaterials until early 1920s. Then studies were started to usea combination of the two, and most of the research activitiesfocused on the determination of the physico-chemical relationbetween the two items.

Towards the late 1920s, it became a common practice to mixcement with wood chips instead of sand.

By early 1940s, the knowledge required for turning the mixture ofcement and wood chips into a board was attained.

In 1940, the first wood fiber boards were manufactured byadding very long fibers to cement and pressing. Subsequently, the panels that were the prototypes of today’s cement-bondedparticle boards were manufactured by adding shorter woodfibers to cement.

The first company to manufacture the present cement-bondedparticle boards was established in 1967 in Switzerland. Research

continued since then aiming to create boards manufactured fromversatile, practical, environment-friendly and wholly ecologicalraw materials.

The 1970s witnessed the erection of cement-bonded particleboard factories one after another around the world.

1.2 - CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIAL

Cement-bonded particleboard created by combining the favorablefeatures of wood and cement is a high-quality building material.

Moisture ResistanceBETOPAN is the right material required for wet cells and exteriorfaçades for its resistance to moisture.

Water ResistanceBETOPAN swells negligibly ( 1.5%) when immersed in water for24 hours.

Non-molding 1- BETOPAN does not mold due to its moisture resistance.2- It is resistant to insects and pests.3- BETOPAN does not host insects and pests due to its cement

content.

Fire Resistance (European Classification)Fire resistance standard : TS EN 13501-1

Fire : B1Smoke : s1Fall of particles or burning drips : d0

Fire Resistance (UK Classification)It is more resistant to burn than ‘Class 0’ according to the UKBuilding Regulation, Document B2, Chapter 6. According to thisregulation, ‘Class 0’ corresponds to;

Fire : Class B,Smoke : s3Fall of particles or burning drips : d2.

As it can be inferred from above;Being better than Class 0 as specified by United Kingdom Building

Regulation proves that the material characteristics of BETOPANboards in European Standards (i.e. B1, s1, d0) are better than manyproducts and rank higher in classifications.

Thermal insulationA BETOPAN layer of 1 cm in thickness provides the same thermalinsulation as a 10 cm thick concrete. Thermal insulation providedby a 8.4 cm thick sandwich wall covered with BETOPAN on bothsurfaces can be equal to that provided by 39 cm thick insulated airbricks.

Crash and Impact Resistance

The material has the highest resistance to impact and crash amongsimilar materials.

Machine ProcessibilityBETOPAN allows inserting lamps, opening grooves and bushings; itcan be drilled and cut.

LightnessIt is made of a light material. For example, 10 mm thick BETOPANweighs 13 kg/m2.

Moisture ResistanceThe product swells by 1.5% at maximum when immersed inwater for 24 hours. So it exhibits superior resistance featuresin moist environments compared to other similar materials (e.g.hardboard, MDF, plasterboard, OSB).

Resistance to Biological AgentsThanks to its high alkalinity (pH 11-13) and density, BETOPANis resistant to environmental factors and biological agent. Itssusceptibility to fungus and mold was tested in above-the-groundand buried conditions in extremely moist areas. No mold orfungus was detected on boards above the ground; some moldingtraces were detected on boards after remaining buried under theground for 8 years. However, this deterioration remains at 0.9 mmthickness on the surface. The insect infestation test conducted inopen air revealed that the boards were not affected by insects.

Resistance to Earthquake and ImpactIt owes its tensile strength and impact resistance values to itswood content.

Bending resistance : 9 N/mm2

Elasticity module : 4500 N/mm2

Tensile strength vertical to the surface : 0.5 N/mm2

Fire ResistanceBETOPAN boards are fire resistant.

Movement related to Ambient Moisture and TemperatureWooden material moves depending on the ambient moisture.Similarly, set cement and concrete move as the ambient moisturechanges.

The movement rate of BETOPAN is less than that of wood and morethan that of set cement. The structure of BETOPAN is much morehomogenous than wood, so the movement is also homogenous.

During the applications, BETOPAN boards must be painted withpreferably a silicone-based, alkaline-resistant paint. With theimpact of paint, linear movement will diminish, but will not becompletely eliminated. Thus the boards must be affixed by amethod that will allow linear movement.

This will completely prevent formal movements such as hollowingand swelling up of the surface.

APPLICATION OF EXTERIOR FAÇADE

WITH MECHANICAL VENTILATION

Insulated and ventilated systems functionwithout thermal bridges or heat loss.

In buildings where Tepe Betopan Façade SidingSystem is applied, the surface of the building,or the outer surface of the insulation materialwhich is in immediate contact with the buildingsurface, is separated from the siding surfaceby means of the bearing profile (M Profile). This not only enables maximum ventilation, butalso prevents moisture, heat loss or thermaldifferences (bridges).

3 - ADVANTAGES OF INSULATED AND VENTILATED FAÇADE SYSTEMS

4 - APPLICATION PRINCIPLES FOREXTERIOR FAÇADE SYSTEMS USINGBETOPANPLUS, YALIPAN, AND TASONIT

Betopanplus, Yalıpan, and TASONIT, which are used for claddingthe interior walls and exterior façades of all types of building, willprotect the façade for many years without causing any loss in thearchitecture of the building as long as they are used in accordancewith the rules recommended by Tepe Betopan.

4.1 - DETECTION OF WALL DEFECTS

Walls to be clad will be tested for their deviations from thehorizontal and vertical axis by means of a plumb , water gauge andleveling rope, so that the defects will not continue on the bearingconstruction. Defects up to 3 cm can be eliminated by the help ofthe flexible construction material among the bearing construction

elements belonging to our products (Picture 1-A)

For deviations larger than 3 cm, a separate frame system (steel boxprofile, etc.) needs to be constructed. Especially the deviations onthe vertical axis in corners are important since they will determinethe dimensions of the outer corner accessories.

4.2 - MOUNTING THE INSULATION MATERIAL

If thermal insulation is to be applied to the surface that will be clad, the insulation material must be chosen and applied according tothe desired insulation values and specifications before the bearingconstruction is established. (Picture 1-B)

Thermal insulation boards will remain under the bearingconstruction; therefore it will be sufficient to affix them to the wallduring their assembly. (Picture 1-B)

(Picture 1-C)

4.3 - FORMING THE BEARING CONSTRUCTION

After the vertical axis deviations on the wall are detected, ourproducts will be fixed to the wall with the bearing constructionelement M profile and flexible connection elements at appropriatesizes, by leaving 2-3 cm space in the lower end. The affixingprocedure is repeated along the M profile at every 80 or 100 cm byusing recommended wall plugs and screws. Slots of M profiles mustbe marked on the wall starting from the spots where accessorieswill be placed. Vertical axis is checked for one last time (plumb bob)by tightening and loosening the screws marked on the M profiles.

After this check, M profiles and flexible connection elements will beconnected to each other by metal sheet screws and the affixation

procedure will be completed as such. After the initial and final Mprofiles are affixed in accordance with the vertical axis, slots of theM profiles that will be situated in between will be marked on the wallwith a leveling rope in accordance with the vertical axis. The spacebetween two M profiles should not be more than 75 cm. (Picture1-C)

4.4 - MOUNTING THE ACCESSORIES

Standard or decorative jamb - head jamb accessory combinationmanufactured from Betopanplus, Yalıpan and TASONIT can be joined with 45° or 90° angle like in wooden furniture workmanshipA small recess created at this joint can hide potential cracks.Accessories should be affixed to the M profile at every 100 cm bymeans of drywall plug.

4.5 - CUTTING

Betopan (Plain), Yalıpan (Wood-textured), TASONIT (Stone-textured)exterior façade siding materials are manufactured by the factory asboards, strips or in modular dimensions.

Cutting processes that need to be conducted on the worksite mustbe conducted on portable or stable cutting benches by using HARDSTEEL (carbide) or DIAMOND BLADE SAWS.

Since our Plus Group products are more durable and solid, thecorners on the edges of the boards may not be smooth after individualcutting. So our company recommends that such edges are finished.

Standard Masks and Goggles should be worn during the cuttingprocess.

4.6 - SCREWING

Screwing is easy, however there are certain points that requireattention:

First, the screwing slots should be determined and marked onthe board that will be assembled.

On the marked slots, body holes will be drilled, and thencountersinks will be created with a diameter wider than screwdiameter, which enable the screw head to be embedded inthe board. Countersinks must enable the screw head to beembedded in the board surface for 2-3 mm.

Excessive force should not be applied in order to fasten thescrew during the screwing process. Such excessive pressurenot only runs the risk of cracking the board, but also causesthe screw to get jammed and prevent the movement of theboards.

Screws must be inserted vertically to the surface during thescrewing process.

Screwing must be performed according to dimensions. Forexample in a siding application, on a strip of 12 x 175 x 3000mm dimensions; 20 drywall screws will be used in every 1 m2.On the vertical axis, 2 screws will be placed at a distance of20-30 mm from the edges. On the horizontal axis, 1 screw atevery 600 mm (max) will be inserted at the slots correspondingto M profiles.

4.7 - PAINTING

After the assembly of accessories and boards is completed, screw heads will be concealed with polyester steel paste byusing a spatula. It is important to use an appropriate amount ofpaste since excess amounts can cause cracking.

Pasted slots must be sanded with a thin sand paper.

Polyurethane based grouting material can be used in order to fillsome spaces that may be created during the application.

Accessories and boards can be painted by alkaline–resistant,acrylic-based exterior façade paint. In order to increase theresistance of paint to exterior conditions, the surface must becleaned from dust and a single layer primer must be appliedbefore painting.

Alkaline-resistant, silicone-added or pure acrylic paint shouldbe used for painting the accessories.

Paints to be used on other surfaces are not different than thoseapplied on concrete surfaces. Different effects can be obtained

by applying different painting methods on the materials.Pasting and painting process must not be conducted at ambienttemperatures below +5°.

The weather should not be rainy, or the surface must have beendry and relieved from the water it absorbed during the rainbefore painting.

Instructions by the paint manufacturer should also be observed.

BETOPANPLUS was created by combining the middle layer ofBETOPAN that is manufactured from wood, cement and harmlesschemical additives with external layers produced from naturalminerals and cement. Betopanplus has a plain surface.

Thanks to its superior structural qualities created by combining thelightness, elasticity, high tensile strength and processibility that itowes to its wood content with resistance to water, moisture, fire and

decay that it derives from cement and minerals; BETOPANPLUS is amodern, widely used construction material resistant to earthquakeand fire. This resulted in a board which moves very little due to relativehumidity, has a high fire resistance (Euroclass Fire Rating A2, s1, d0),is as resistant to external factors as high-quality concrete, and allowsthe application of all paints applicable on concrete.

BETOPANPLUS can be used in interior and exterior siding applicationsof all types of buildings.

5.1 - GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

It is stable.

It provides perfect sound and thermal insulation. Both surfaces are a kind of particle-free concrete that includesnatural minerals, and are not affected by heat variations. It does not swell in water (maximum 1.5%), nor does it mold.It is not affected by heat variationsIt is not affected by moisture. It is not affected by environmental conditions over time.It does not accommodate insects. It is environment-friendly.It does not release formaldehyde. It is fire resistant.(Euroclass Fire Rating A2, s1, d0).It does not contain asbestos. It can be easily and quickly mounted. It is highly resistant to impact.

5.2 - ADVANTAGES OF USING BETOPANPLUS INEXTERIOR SPACES

IMPORTANT POINTS REGARDING CLASSICAL LAP

SIDING SYSTEM

If thermal insulation is to be applied on the surface to besided, it should be applied before the mounting of the bearingconstruction. It will be sufficient to affix the thermal insulationboards on the wall before mounting the bearing construction

since they will remain below the bearing construction.

Walls to be clad will be tested for their deviations from thehorizontal and vertical axis by means of a plumb bob, watergauge and leveling rope, so that the defects will not continueon the bearing construction. Defects up to 3 cm can beeliminated by the help of bearing construction elements ofBetopan. For deviations larger than 3 cm, a separate framesystem (steel box profile, etc.) needs to be constructed by boxprofiles.

Yalıpan jamb-head jamb accessories must be cut at 45°angle on the edges and joined at 45° like in wooden furnitureworkmanship. This process will be conducted by exercising

with the accessories at an appropriate place other than thesiding surface. Joined parts are stabilized by aluminum cornerprofile, and marked on M profiles by means of drywall screws.

Yalıpan strips are mounted starting from the lowest row afterthe assembly of the bearing construction and accessories.

Yalıpan strips will be affixed to M profiles by means of drywallscrews. It is recommended to join the ends of strips at differentspots in each row. In the second row of affixation, the otherwing of the M profile is used so that strips pulling the profile inopposite directions are not tied to the same point at the bottomand the top. Spots corresponding to end joints are excludedfrom this rule.

Drywall screws are inserted at 2 cm distance under the upperedge of Yalıpan strip. For this reason, the visible surface ofYalıpan strips is maximum 15 cm. This distance can be reducedin door and window slots.
