A Treasure

By Mildred Hatfield

It’s more than a coverlet,

More than a spread,

This beautiful quilt,

That graces my bed.

It’s laughter and sorrow,

It’s pleasure and pain,

It’s small bits and pieces,

Of sunshine and rain.

It’s a bright panorama,

Of scraps of my life,

It’s moments of glory,

It’s moments of strife.

It’s a story I cherish,

Of days that have been,

It’s a door I can open,

To live them again.

Yes, it’s more than a cover,

This much-treasured quilt,

It’s parts pieced together,

Of the life I have built.

Trip to Bali presented by Carol Culton

Here are two of the possible

Chicken Challenge Blocks

from the October Workshop

by Ann Shaw. There are five

patterns to choose from.

Ann will share the methods

and techniques for designing

chickens using Ruth McDow-

ell’s piecing strategies.

AND MORE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, JANE SZABO:

By the time you receive your Newsletter, the Northwest Quilting Expo sill be done for another year. I have

been busy collecting, tagging, and sorting the 56 quilts that are being displayed there. Jean Amundson, Karen

Donobedian and Sue Stephenson have also entered quilts in the juried show. I just heard that one of them has

received a ribbon. How Exciting! I’m sure it will be a whirlwind few days of selling raffle tickets and walking

among the quilts. Thank you to all who have helped make this a successful display. I am proud to represent

the guild with all our beautiful quilts. We should all be proud to be a member of an Oregon Featured quilt

Guild.

Please volunteer to help out next year in the Guild. Many committees would love to train a new person and

you would be making friends and sharing ideas. See Cindy McEntee at the next Guild Meeting for details on

committee openings. The Board was excited to add a Round robin next year with Nancy Terhaar’s and Patti

Stephen’s idea. The Board is very welcoming of new ideas and is also going to add a special Guild-wide pro-

ject with Betty Jones’s plans.

Calling all 2016 Raffle Quilt Ideas!

October Guild Meeting is the time to share plans for the next Raffle Quilt, 2016. Talk to your Guild friends and

think of a great quilt. If your idea is chosen in November, you will be the Raffle Quilt Committee Chairperson

for 2015. The committee along with Guild members will have a year to work together to finish it. You will have

plenty of help from the Guild to assist in piecing or appliqueing the blocks. The expenses of the Raffle Quilt

are provided within the Budget of 2015. This year’s Raffle Quilt, “Postcards from the Coast,” turned out beauti-

fully and was finished early enough to be ready for ticket sales at the Portland NW Expo.

Don’t delay! Talk to your friends and start planning! If you can’t attend the October 9, 6 PM Meeting, just email

or phone me your ideas.

Jane Szabo

OCTOBER PROGRAM

Kathy McNeil will be here to present, “Tips, Tricks, and Stories.” “Sharing our tips has been a hallmark of

the quilting community. Let me share 15 years of award-winning tips and a couple of disasters with you.

The inspiration and stories behind my quilts will make you and laugh and make you cry. Let me inspire con-

fidence in your own creative process!” ~Kathy McNeil

Just a reminder:

“Feathers are Flying” Workshop:

Friday, Oct 10: 9:30-4:00

Kathy McNeil, nationally known quilter, pattern designer, and instructor will be here to teach the workshop,

“Feathers are Flying.” Be sure to bring your $52 for the class (plus $10 for the pattern) to the Guild Meeting.

If You have any questions, be sure to contact Heidi Ware of Julia Bailey and you can visit Kathy’s website

at kathymcneilquilts.com.

“Chicken Challenge” Workshop

Friday, November 14, 2014

Becky Mershon is replacing Liz Ritchie as co-chair with Marylynn for the November Program and

Workshop. Liz’s phone number is 541-547-5364. There are still 3 spaces left for the Workshop.

Ann Shaw will be presenting the program on November 14, 2014 at 1:30 PM as well as teaching

the Workshop on Friday, November 15, 2014. Her program is called, “Line, Shape, and Design in

Quilts.” She will be giving us an overview of her approach in designing quilts and will talk about

how different choices in the design process influence the look of the quilt. Ann specializes in

pieced art quilts based on the methods developed by Ruth B. McDonald. Ann also creates mod-

ern abstract art quilts based on repeated block patterns of her own design. Call or email if you

have any questions. ~Marylynn

Block of the Month Spotlight by Lorne Pleger

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

Twenty Six members signed up to receive the August BOM Sunshine Block, and twenty two of those members picked up

their packets at the August meeting. Due to the low turnout at the September meeting only twelve of those completed

blocks were turned in. Jean Amundson won the drawing and with my preview block received 13 blocks. Jean will also re-

ceive any additional Sunshine Blocks turned in at a later date.

Seventeen members had signed up to receive the September BOM Summer Winds Block, but only ten of those members

were present to receive their packets at the September meeting. Two additional members signed up and received their

packets for a total of twelve packets picked up at the September meeting. I have quite a few packets left, so if you would

like to receive one let me know. You are welcome to pick up any BOM packet late, and we do our best to get the late turn

ins to the respective winners.

Fifteen members signed up to receive a packet for the October BOM Jack-O-Lantern Block. I will make up extra pack-

ets, so I should have plenty for any additional members that would like to receive a packet at the October meeting. A

swatch of orange and yellow batik will be provided in each packet for the pumpkin pieces of the blocks. This block is paper

pieced, so the pattern provided will be printed on freezer paper. The pattern is comprised of six segments lettered A

through F. A, B and C segments are sewn together to form one half of the block, and D, E and F segments form the other

half. Once the segments in each half are assembled, the halves are carefully matched and sewn together along the match

line to form the completed block. Piecing be with you.

Lorne Pleger, BOM Committee Chairman

GOOD NEWS!

We are making plans for next year’s Small Quilt Auction at the 2015 Quilt Show. We will add a new feature for

our Guild—an “EARLY BIRD BUY-OUT”—option to allow any item to be bought off-the-wall at any time during

the Quilt Show on both Friday and Saturday, at a pre-set dollar figure. The maker of the item will suggest a

total value price to the Committee for this option. Unless an item is sold for that price, ti will remain in the bid

process until the end of the Quilt Show and be sold to the highest bidder as in the past. We would like to sug-

gest that if you are making an item especially for this sale that you consider a Beach or Ocean theme because

they usually bring the highest bids.

We look forward to another 25+ wonderful donations next year.

THANK YOU to everyone who participated this year and another THANK YOU to all of you who plan to help

us with a quilt donation for the Charity you nominate next year.

~Betty Jones and Knotty Ladies Silent Auction Committee

find members to volunteer for the few positions and committees

that we have? This organization runs on volunteers. Your partici-

pation will make membership a much fuller experience for you.

Check the sign up board and find a place where you can serve.

There is plenty to do and if we all share the load, it is a lot more

fun!

Show and Share August 2014

Dear Oregon Quilters Guild Members,

As you can easily see, this page of the Newsletter is basically empty. There is a rea-son for this. Like many of our committees, YOU are missing. We really need you to participate in our Guild activities and those activities include sharing your talents on committees as well as with your Show and Share. We know how busy you are; any one of us probably wonders how we got everything done before we retired or while we had young children at home, or while we were single or even two days before we joined the Quilt Guild. There are enough activities in a day to fill up pages of Newslet-ters. And yet. . . and yet we know that you are wonderfully capable people who just need an opportunity to share your organizational talents, your writing abilities, your creative flair, and your love of people to make our Guild function as it should. Take the time you would have spent reading a long article on this page and think about all you have to offer. We promise you that there is a place for YOU anywhere you’d like to help us out.
