The M. V. KOORINGA

Kooringa ’Wins’Title As FirstContainer Ship

Back in March the Port of HoustouMAGAZINE ran a photograph of theBritish flag, Germau-t)uilt (1965) M.V.LA BONITA, identifying the 972 tonvessel as "the first vessel designed andbuilt as a container ship."

Now. from Associated SteamshipsPty., Ltd., in Melbourne, Australia, comes word that their M.K. KOORINGA"was designed and built as a containership, commissioned in May, 1964, and,to the best of our knowledge, fhe firstpure container ship designed and builtin the world."

J. A. McMeekin, marketing managerfor Associated Steamship, says the 6,750ton KOORINGA is capable of handlingup to 10.000 tons of cargo in 36 hoursand can load and discharge simultane-ously.

Officials of Lykes Bros. SteamshipCo., Inc., of New Orleans, revealed de-tails of a $20 million program callingfor reconstruction of nine of its rela-tively new general cargo transports toprovide U. S. Gulf Ports with regularlyscheduled, fast ships having adequatestowage for containers and increasedbreak-bulk cargo space.

The plan calls for jumboizing nine oftl~e 21 ships of the Lykes Gulf PrideClass by adding a mid-body section 97feet long. thus increasing the cubiccargo capacity of each ship by 40 percent, and the deadweight capacity by30 per cent. The new "Jumbo Prides"would add in excess of 2 million cubicfeet of cargo space, or the equivalentof three new ships, to the Lykes Linesfleet.
