FASIG-TIPTON CATALOGUES252 FOR SARATOGA SALE
Fasig-Tipton has catalogued 252 selected yearlings for its
Saratoga Sale to be held Aug. 8-9. Sessions will begin each
evening at 6:30 p.m in the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion. This
year=s catalogue cover features Saratoga=s four 2015 Eclipse
Champion sale graduates.
AWe are thrilled with the catalogue,@ said Fasig-Tipton
President and Chief Executive Officer Boyd Browning, Jr. AIt is a
spectacular group of horses, both on the front cover and the
back cover and everything in between. We=re really proud of it.
We=re proud of this year=s group and we=re proud of our
graduates.
He added, ASaratoga produced four Eclipse Champions in
2015--American Pharoah, Songbird, Stellar Wind, and Tepin--
more than any other individual Thoroughbred auction in the
world. And, not only are these horses great champions, they are
arguably some of the most accomplished racehorses we=ve seen
in some time--a testament to the type of quality our consignors
offer at Saratoga.@
Some potential highlights of this year=s catalogue include hip
122, a War Front filly out of MGISW millionaire and GI Kentucky
Oaks winner Plum Pretty (Medaglia d=Oro); and hip 49, a Tapit
filly out of MGISW Her Smile (Include), one of 13 in the
catalogue for her hugely successful sire. Cont. p3
SOMEWHERE IN (ON?) (NOT NEW) JERSEYBy Bill Finley
When it comes to racing I have always liked the offbeat. When
you=ve seen 25 or so runnings of the GI Mother Goose S. at
Belmont, the Mother Goose just doesn=t do it for you anymore.
So while many of the finest 3-year-old fillies in the country will
be racing at Belmont Park I will be some 3,500 miles away trying
to figure out the card at Les Landes Race Course in Jersey.
Not that Jersey. Not Monmouth Park Jersey or Bruce
Springsteen, Chris Christie, Snooki or traffic circles, but the Isle
of Jersey. It is part of the Channel Islands, a small group of
islands just off the coast of Normandy, France yet part of the
United Kingdom.
Why I am I here? Because different is fun.
Les Landes runs nine meetings a year. There is also one
meeting on another of the Channel Islands, Guernsey. The Les
Landes races will be held Friday and there is a five-race card,
one jumper and four flat races. Cont. p4

Fasig-Tipton Releases Saratoga Catalogue cont.
Hill >n= Dale Sales Agency as agent consigns another potential
headline act in the form of hip 61. The dark bay, foaled on St.
Patrick=s Day 2015, is a Ghostzapper daughter of the talented
Ivanavinalot (West Acre), making her a half-sister to the
aforementioned and still-undefeated Songbird as well as the
dam of GSW Mico Margarita (Run Away and Hide). There will
also be yearlings offered by
Galileo (Ire), Animal Kingdom,
Bernardini, Uncle Mo, the late
Scat Daddy, Pioneerof the Nile,
Medaglia d=Oro, Paynter and
Curlin. Browning Jr. is particularly
impressed with the depth of
quality in terms of the Saratoga
sale=s sire power.
AI think all of us were a little bit
fearful of what was going to
happen and how we were going
to replace the Storm Cats and
the A. P. Indys of the world and
lo and behold, there are new
superstars that emerge,@ he commented. AThe Tapits and in the
form of exciting horses like War Front and Frankel and Uncle Mo
is off to a phenomenal start and we have some really nice
freshman sires. It is kind of an exciting time in the Thoroughbred
industry with significant performers on the racetrack and
significant performers in the breeding shed.@
While the 2015 Saratoga was void of first-crop yearlings by the
irrepressible Frankel, buyers will be able to avail themselves of a
couple of opportunities in 2016. Indian Creek, agent, offers hip
65, a Feb. 28-foaled filly out of MGSW J=ray (Distant View),
making her a half-sister to MSW General Jack (Giant=s
Causeway). Hip 148 is a colt out of champion She Be Wild (Offlee
Wild) from the consignment of Bluewater Sales, as agent. And
after a year=s absence, Galileo offspring--a pair of colts and one
filly--return to Saratoga.
AWe=re really excited about that,@ Browning Jr. said when
asked about the opportunity to bring yearlings by Frankel to the
marketplace. AHis 2-year-olds are off to a fantastic start; he was
a brilliant racehorse and obviously he=s off to a very successful
start as a stallion, so we=re very please to have the opportunity
to have some Frankels this year. We didn=t have any last year,
but it=s just reflective of the growing international nature of our
business.@
And not to be forgotten is the inherent allure of Saratoga.
AThe great thing about Saratoga is if you=re a racing enthusiast-
-whether a racing fan or a breeding fan or a sales fan--there is
almost magical pixie dust in the air,@ he said. AThe quality of
racing is fantastic, the atmosphere around it is so good, you see
multiple generations of families with a Form talking about >who
do you like in the third?= or who=s going to be a really hot sales
sire this year. Saratoga puts a little bounce in everyone=s step,
whether you=re a consignor, buyer, trainer, owner, fan or a
bettor. There=s always a sense of anticipation when you get to
Saratoga and we=re thrilled to be a big part of that.@
The catalogue may now be viewed online. Print catalogues will
be available from all Fasig-Tipton offices beginning July 1.

Racing at Les Landes
Jersey Race Club photo
A World War II battery
on the Isle of Jersey
Bill Finley cont. from p1
I can tell you that the feature race is the one jump race, the
Channel Islands Champion Hurdle, and the winner will receive
,2,380. I also know that Mark Johnson, the track announcer at
Churchill Downs between 2009 and 2013, is the regular caller at
Les Landes. Go figure.
I also googled away and found out that our New Jersey indeed
comes from this Jersey. New Jersey was named by James, Duke
of York (the brother of
King Charles II of
England), who was
given New Jersey by
his brother. James
later gave New Jersey
to Lord John Berkeley
and Sir George
Carteret. James named
the colony New Jersey
to honor Carteret, who
had been the Governor
of Jersey, a British island in the English Channel.
But that=s about all I know. Who are these horses, jockeys,
trainers and where do they come from? Why would a remote
island with just 92,000 residents have a racetrack? Can they
compete on the mainland of the UK or are they hopelessly
outclassed. Are there any past performances? I searched long
and far for that information and could come up with little.
Racing at Les Landes is a mystery, and I hope to have a at least a
few answers tomorrow.
In the meantime, Thursday was spent exploring the island. The
easiest way to get here from the East Coast was to fly to Dublin
and take a puddle jumper
from there. Upon my arrival I
asked the nice man at the
Avis counter for a GPS, which
just as well could have meant
to him a Geothermal
Protective Spaceship. Ok,
strange country, windy roads,
drive on left, no idea where
I=m going...yep...I=ll be fine.
Though I=ve driven in the UK
plenty of times, it still takes
some getting used to and I
was so conscious about staying away from the right-hand side of
the road that I veered too far to the left and scratched up the
driver=s side door. (We=ll be burying that one deep down on the
expense account right under dinner with some trainer the
bosses have never heard of). Cont. p5

Being that these are islands out of the middle of the sea, one
would think the main reason tourists come here is to enjoy the
sunshine and the beaches. If they do, they=re nuts, that is if
Thursday was anything typical of a late June day in Jersey. The
high was 62 Fahrenheit, it was dreary and it drizzled on and off
most of the day. Not a soul could be found on the beach. At my
hotel, a lovely place called La Haule Manor, there is a swimming
pool, but I=m guessing the last time anyone jumped in was 1984
and they were soon afterward whisked off to the hospital with
an acute case of hypothermia.
Apparently, they don=t share their French neighbors= affection
for fine wine. In the first liquor store I went to the shelves were
loaded with three packs of wine selling for a total of ,9. Sorry,
we=ll pass.
I was also surprised to see no signs of the secretive banking
businesses that are part of so many of these islands. Jersey is
supposedly like so many of the rest, a place where the mega-
wealthy go to hide their money to avoid paying taxes. I expected
to see ridiculous mansions and Mitt Romney driving around in a
chauffeur-driven Maserati. I saw nothing of the kind. In fact, I
couldn=t even find a bank and had to hit an ATM at a Shell
station. Maybe I just didn=t know where to look.
I did stumble upon one of the more endearing features of
Jersey. There are plenty of unattended farm stands here where
the owners leave out flowers and
produce and expect the
customers to do the right thing
and leave the appropriate
amount of money in a box. I paid
,2 for some flowers.
So, tomorrow will be the races
at a place everyone says is quaint
and picturesque, as it sits right
on top of the sea. The first race
goes off at 6:30 p.m. and it=s a seven-furlong handicap. Thirteen
are entered, including two from the stable of Alyson Malzard
(the Linda Rice of the Isle of Jersey?) and two from the barn of
Angie Corson. I believe there=s a Pick Four on the card and I=m
hearing that Rossetti is the Arkle of Channel Islands steeplechase
racing and is lock city. Other than that, I haven=t got a clue. Tips?
Expert opinions on racing at Les Landes? Send them my way or
come meet me at the track. I=ll be the guy wearing a parka.
IOWA DERBY A USEFUL TEST FOR
AMERICAN FREEDOM by Ben Massam
The buzz about Gary and Mary West=s American Freedom
(Pulpit) has been present since his debut, and the bay has an
opportunity to take
the next step towards
delivering on his
seemingly massive
potential with a try in
the GIII Iowa Derby at
Prairie Meadows
Friday night. American
Freedom has been
installed as the 5-2
morning line second
choice behind recent
GIII Matt Winn S. third
Texas Chrome (Grasshopper), but it seems likely that he will go
postward as a heavy favorite.
Acquired for $500,000 as a Keeneland September yearling,
American Freedom turned some heads with a convincing debut
score going seven furlongs at Santa Anita Apr. 9, and trainer Bob
Baffert fueled the hype with ensuing talk that the colt could be a
contender for the GI Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in
late July. Cont. p6

Iowa Derby cont.
He subsequently disappointed when sixth as the 7-5 favorite in
Churchill=s GIII Pat Day Mile May 7, but recently bounced back
with a gritty one-length victory in the listed Sir Barton S. at
Pimlico May 21--an effort that was flattered when fourth-place
finisher Donegal Moon (Malibu Moon) came back to win the
GIII Pegasus S. June 19.
American Freedom returned to California following that effort
and has registered three consecutive six-furlong drills at Santa
Anita. Baffert has won the Iowa Derby three times previously,
most recently with Prayer for Relief (Jump Start) in 2011.
American Freedom=s sternest test could come from Texas
Chrome, who chased GI Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Gun
Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) home to complete the trifecta in the
June 18 Matt Winn. The Texas-bred, a four-time stakes winner,
has only finished off the board once in nine starts.
Trainer Donnie Von Hemel sends out the impeccably bred
Synchrony (Tapit) off a two-month layoff. The chestnut, third in
both the Jan. 18 Smarty Jones S. and the Apr. 16 GIII Lexington
S., tends to lag in the
early stages and
figures to need a lively
pace up front to
deliver his best effort.
A son of GSW & GISP
Brownie Points (Forest
Wildcat)--who won the
Iowa Distaff S. here in
2007--he adds blinkers
for this try and has the
benefit of two local workouts in the past month.
Ramsey Farm homebred Hint of Roses (Tapit) was entered for
the May 7 GI Kentucky Derby as a maiden on the also-eligible
list, and although he did not draw in to that prestigious event,
he recently broke his maiden over 10 furlongs at Churchill
Downs May 30. Cutting back to 1 1/16 miles for Friday night=s
test, the Mike Maker trainee figures to do his best running late
with jockey Florent Geroux aboard.
Michael J. Bruder=s Lookin for a Kiss (Lookin At Lucky) is the
only other entrant in the Iowa Derby with previous experience
at the graded stakes level, having finished seventh after
contesting a hot pace in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. Apr. 9 and
an even fifth--just ahead of American Freedom--in the Pat Day
Mile. The chestnut has worked steadily at Churchill Downs in
recent weeks and could make use of his early speed from the
inside post position.

Family Tree made four starts at two for this barn, winning her
maiden over six furlongs at Kentucky Downs on debut, then
adding third placings on the main track in Churchill=s Rags to
Riches S. in November and again in the Trapeze S. at Remington
Park Dec. 13. Turned over to Bob Baffert for the first part of her
3-year-old campaign, the $225,000 Keeneland September
purchase finished two lengths adrift of Thrilled (Uncle Mo) in
Sunland=s Plum Pretty S. Mar. 20 prior to a comfortable
allowance victory back beneath the Twin Spires on the Kentucky
Oaks undercard May 6. The chestnut was 3-5 when squaring off
last time with Ready to Confess in Lousville, but could not resist
the latter=s late surge and settled for second.
Drawn widest in a field reduced to 10 by the scratch of
Thursday Santa Anita allowance winner Emmzy (Eskendereya),
Family Tree, back with Catalano for this, raced widest into the
clubhouse turn and secured a stalking spot from third as
Marquee Miss (Cowboy Cal) set the pace just to the outside of
8-5 favorite Thrilled, a rare Prairie Meadows runner for the
almighty Todd Pletcher barn. Given her cue three deep on the
second bend by Florent Geroux, Family Tree edged up to take
command just about the same time that Thrilled was calling it a
day at the rail. Family Tree cornered for home narrowly in front
and although Ready to Confess (More Than Ready)--who
defeated Family Tree in a Churchill allowance May 28--took a
run at her to the outside in the final furlong, Family Tree dug in
and was edging away late.
Pedigree Notes:
The winner=s stakes-winning dam, herself a daughter of six-
time GSW and three-time GISP Gold Mover (Gold Fever), was
purchased by Dell Ridge Farm for $350,000 carrying her first foal
by Quality Road out of the Ned Evans dispersal at the 2011
Keeneland November sale. Giant Mover is the dam of the
2-year-old filly Clearly Claire (Candy Ride {Arg}), a $220,000
KEESEP yearling, and foaled another filly by that Lane=s End
stallion Mar. 21. This is also the further female family of Grade I
winner Dance Teacher (Smarten), GSW Fiesty Countess (Count

PUERTO RICO=S YOUNG GUNS TAKING OVERby Joe Bianca
Take a look at the top of the current Belmont Park
spring/summer meeting jockey standings and you=ll quickly
recognize a few common threads. For one, Jose Ortiz (63 wins),
Irad Ortiz, Jr. (43) and Manny Franco (43) are all under 24 years
old. More importantly to Angel Cordero, Jr. though, they=re all
natives of Puerto Rico.
Cordero was a pioneer for Puerto Rican
jockeys in the United States at a time when the
vast majority of riders were either native-born
or hailed from South America. He won over
7,000 races, was the first jockey from the
island commonwealth to capture all three
jewels of the Triple Crown and, in 1988,
became the first Puerto Rican to be elected to
racing=s Hall of Fame. 24 years later, then a
jockey=s agent, Cordero watched with pride as
his longtime student, friend and client, Puerto
Rican pilot John Velazquez, was enshrined.
Now 73, Cordero has a new reason to be
proud of the trail he blazed, as the Ortiz
brothers, Franco and 19-year-old Eric Cancel
have begun to usher in an era of success for
Puerto Rican jockeys unlike anything racing has
ever seen.
AThose four guys are the future of racing,@
Cordero predicted. ATwo to three years from now, they=ll be the
ones at the top. There ain=t no doubt about it. They=re the most
talented, the youngest, and the ones who want it the most.@
Irad, the elder Ortiz, came stateside as an 18-year-old in 2011
and settled in New York, finding some success early on as an
apprentice. The following summer at Saratoga, he celebrated a
signature win when his mount Questing (Hard Spun) dominated
the GI Alabama S. by nine lengths. Not looking back since, he has
already found the winner=s circle 1,262 times in his nascent
career en-route to over $80 million in purse money earned.
Jose, one year younger, joined Irad in the States in 2012 and
won with his first mount aboard a gelding named Corofin (Flashy
Bull) at Aqueduct that March. Somewhat overshadowed by
Irad=s success for most of four years, he is enjoying a breakout
season, having already captured both Aqueduct riding titles, as
well as 11 graded stakes, equal to his total from all of last year.
Franco, 21, is also having his best campaign since arriving in
New York in 2013 and has eclipsed his win total from last year=s
Belmont spring/summer meet by 18 victories with several
weeks still to go. Cancel is going through a bit of a sophomore
slump, but was far and away New York=s leading apprentice
rider in 2015.
AThey were like when you train horses and you get a nice
2-year-old,@ Cordero said, Athen you get another one, and
another one. They all came back-to-back. I=m very happy and
very proud of them. To come to the big circle and hit it big that
quick, not too many people can do that.@
All four riders are graduates of the Escuela Vocacional Hipica,
Puerto Rico=s state-run jockey academy. The school teaches a
soup-to-nuts approach to horsemanship that Cordero says is key
to the young riders= development.
AIt helps them know how to deal with the
horses in every aspect,@ Cordero explained. AAs a
groom, as a hotwalker, as a jockey. They learn to
love the animal and to know the sacrifice that it
takes for a horse to get to a race.@
At the same time, there=s no teacher like
experience, and getting thrown into the fire
riding against some of the top jockeys in the
world in New York is what Cordero says
ultimately forges greatness.
AWhat they=ve got in themselves now, the
talent mixed with the knowledge, they got that
over here in the United States,@ he explained.
AThere=s no school or anything, they just got it
from riding against the best riders in America.
They came into the major leagues straight from
college.@
Once a father figure to Velazquez, Cordero has
now seen Velazquez turn around and fill the same role for the
new wave of Puerto Rican riders, something he says is both
indispensable and unbeknownst to most people.
AJohnny=s like an idol to them,@ Cordero says. AHe=s not only a
great rider, but he=s such a good friend that he welcomes them
and helps them out a lot. Whatever they need, he=ll get it. He=s
not one of those guys who does something and everybody
knows about it. He=s very quiet, never says anything to anybody.
I only know because the guys will come and say >Johnny bought
me a saddle,= >Johnny got me a pair of boots= or >Johnny got me
a helmet.= He=s like a hero to these kids. To be able to compete
with him and be able to be his friend, it means a lot to them.@
Natural talent, schooling, competition and the positive
influence of mentors have proven to be a potent combination
for this group of ascending stars. But there=s one more thing
they have in common: a love for their home.
AThey visit Puerto Rico a lot,@ Cordero related. AOn their days
off, they say >I don=t want to ride anywhere else, I=m going to
Puerto Rico.= They like that.@

Turf Course Installation Complete at Santa Anita:
The installation of approximately nine acres of turf has been
completed at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, and is
expected to be ready in time for the fall meeting beginning Sept.
30. Santa Anita is the
host site for this year=s
Breeders= Cup Nov. 4
and 5.
AThis has been a
major undertaking and
we=re very pleased
with how the entire
project has
progressed,@ said Joe
Morris, Senior Vice
President, West Coast
Operations for The Stronach Group. AThe hillside portion of the
course was completed about three weeks ago and the oval was
finished late yesterday. This particular turf has proven very
resilient in our immediate area and right now, with the warm
temperatures we=ve been experiencing, conditions are optimal
for fast growth.
Morris continued, AThe hillside has already begun to root, so
that=s great news. About 40% of our races are run on grass, so
this project is obviously a huge priority for us, our customers
and horsemen. We=ve been told that we=d be able to run on it in
45 days, but with the installation completed on time, we=ll have
90 days before we have horses competing on it. We=re excited
about opening day on Sept. 30 and we=re looking forward to
welcoming the best horses in the world here for the Breeders=
Cup.@

TCA Dinner to Honor McCarron:
Retired jockey Chris McCarron will be honored by the
Thoroughbred Club of America at the organization=s 85th
testimonial dinner to be held at Keeneland Race Course Sunday
evening, Sept. 25.
"We are thrilled to honor Chris as the 2016 Thoroughbred Club
of America Honor Guest," said TCA
President Shannon Arvin. "His
accomplishments as a world-class
jockey, competing for nearly three
decades with Thoroughbred legends
including Alysheba, John Henry,
Sunday Silence, and Tiznow, as well as
his tremendous contributions to the
Thoroughbred industry and jockey
profession by founding the North
American Racing Academy, certainly
make Chris worthy of this distinct
honor."
Inducted into racing=s Hall of Fame
in 1989, McCarron was a leading rider for nearly three decades,
winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness S. and Belmont S. two
times each while also piloting the winners of five Breeders= Cup
Classics and eight Breeders= Cup events overall. He retired with
7,141 career victories (21% winners) and his mounts earned
nearly $264 million. An Eclipse Award-winning apprentice,
McCarron was recognized twice as outstanding journeyman
jockey and scooped up several other awards voted on by his
peers.
McCarron has carved out a productive career since giving up
the saddle. The general manager of Santa Anita from March
2003 to February 2005, he is the founder and lead instructor for
the North American Riding Academy (NARA) in Lexington.

SUMMER STAKES TARGETSFOR JUDDMONTE RUNNERS
Khalid Abdullah homebred Fair Eva (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who
became Juddmonte=s first runner and winner by its peerless
homebred Frankel when taking a Haydock maiden by four
lengths June 8, has a few potential black-type options ahead of
her, revealed Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe when issuing
an update on a handful of the stable=s runners on Thursday.
The chestnut daughter of Group 1-winning sprinter African
Rose (GB) (Observatory) had been considered for novice races at
Newbury and Haydock this week, but Grimthorpe said she could
instead go up in class later in the month.
"[Trainer] Roger [Charlton] is very pleased with her and she's
come on since the race [at Haydock],@ he noted. "I think we're
just going to pick and choose where we go. She has various
options. She could go for a novice race, but if not there is
something like the [Listed] Star S. at Sandown [July 21], the [G3]
Princess Margaret at Ascot [July 23]--that sort of thing."
Grimthorpe told At The Races one-time G1 Investec Derby
favourite Midterm (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who didn=t contest the
blue riband after finishing a disappointing fifth as the favourite
in the G2 Dante S. May 12--could return to action in the Aug. 17

>TYCOON= NOMS AUCTION CONCLUDES Five nominations to fully booked breakout sire Written Tycoon(Aus) (Iglesia {Aus}) were recently auctioned via Inglis=s onlinebidding platform over five weeks, realizing up to 22% higherthan his advertised A$49,500 stud fee. Written Tycoon, who stands at Woodside Park Stud in Victoria, has sired three Group 1 winners this year, headed by G1 GoldenSlipper winner and >TDN Rising Star= Capitalist (Aus). He sitsthird behind Street Cry (Ire) and Not A Single Doubt (Aus) on thegeneral sire table and is Australasia=s current leading 2-year-oldsire. The first nomination was bought by agent Neil Jenkinson forA$56,500 on behalf of Glenlogan Park, which will stand WrittenTycoon=s son Rich Enuff (Aus) this year. AWe have been a big supporter and fan of Written Tycoon forsome time, which is why we had to buy into Rich Enuff and whywe had to secure a nomination for this year,@ said GlenloganPark=s General Manager Steve Morley. Summer Stakes Targets For Juddmonte Runners cont. from p1
"Midterm is back cantering this week,@ Grimthorpe said of the
son of six-time Grade/Group 1 winner Midday (GB) (Oasis
Dream {GB}). AI saw him a couple of days ago and he's in really
good form. The Great Voltigeur could be a target. I think it might
be a bit premature, but you never know.@
Grimthorpe said Khalid Abdullah=s Midweek (GB) (Motivator
{GB}), under the care of Criquette Head-Maarek in France, looks
likely to drop back in
class next week, having
last been seen
finishing eighth in the
G1 Investec Oaks May
1.
"Midweek is coming
back and will run in a
listed race next week, I
think,@ he said. "We're
still hopeful she's going
to turn into a decent filly."
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Exosphere (GB) (Beat Hollow
{GB}) was a disappointing eighth of nine in Royal Ascot=s
G2 Hardwicke S. after coming home an impressive winner of the
G2 Jockey Club S. Apr. 30, and Grimthorpe said no excuses had
surfaced.
"We don't know what happened to Exosphere,@ he said.
ANothing came out of it, he scoped fine and was sound out of
the race. He will probably head for the [G2] Princess of Wales's
[at Newmarket July 7].@
VOLTIGEUR OPTION FOR ULYSSES Flaxman Stables homebred Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), 12th in
the G1 Investec Derby after breaking his maiden impressively in
May, could bid for redemption in the G2 Great Voltigeur S. at
York Aug. 17.
"The horse is doing well,@ said Flaxman Racing Manager Alan
Cooper. "We've given him an entry in the Great Voltigeur and
will give him plenty of time to get over the Derby. [Trainer] Sir
Michael [Stoute] will decide nearer the time if that is the right
race for him.@
Cooper was offering up no excuses for the son of Oaks winner
Light Shift (Kingmambo)=s Derby effort. "He got a bump in the
Derby, but the Derby is the Derby, we're not going to make any
excuses and we'll go forward from here,@ he said. "We haven't
discussed the [G1] St Leger; we'll just take it one race at a time.
We need to get him back on track."
WELD COULD APPEAL FINE Trainer Dermot Weld told Racing Post he may appeal the
i1,000 fine he received after a filly under his care, Va Pensiero
(Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), tested positive for a local
anaesthetic--a metabolite of Lidocaine--after winning a rated
race at Dundalk May 13.
Weld said at a hearing Wednesday that he had never given, or
ordered to be given,
the 3-year-old
Moyglare Stud
homebred any
medication.
"I'm completely
baffled by the whole
business and I'm
seriously considering
appealing the fine.
That's all I have to
say on the matter," Weld told Racing Post.
Dr. Thomas Barragry noted at the hearing that the levels of
medication in Va Pensiero=s system were very high. Weld=s
veterinarian, Joe O=Donnell, said the filly had never been
administered any medication. Turf Club veterinary officer
Andrew Tyrrell testified that Weld meticulously maintained his
medications record and there was no record of any horses
under his care receiving Lidocaine.
Va Pensiero was disqualified from her win.

by Montjeu {Ire}), fourth on debut over five furlongs at
Bordeaux-le-Bouscat May 23, started as the 2-1 favourite and
broke well to cross over from his wide stall and gain the early
lead. Pressed by Fankairos Ranger (US Ranger) from the quarter
pole, the i105,000 ARQAUG yearling asserted to win by 1 1/2
lengths. Jeu Celebre, who becomes the third winner for his
first-season sire (by Exceed and Excel {Aus}), is a grandson of a
full-sister to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning sire
Special Quest (Fr) and a half to the G2 Criterium de
Maisons-Laffitte-winning highweight Moiava (Fr) (Bering {GB}).

third on debut over six furlongs here June 9 and had her head
poked in front initially before taking a lead from three rivals.

traveling 6-5 favourite with just over 300 metres remaining, and
she quickly settled the issue en route to a comfortable two-
length success from Mademoiselle Marie (Fr) (Evasive {GB}). The
dam is a half-sister to two black-type scorers, with the more
prominent being America Nova (Fr) (Verglas {Ire}), whose

JUMPERS HEAD SUMMER SALE SESSION Arqana's mixed Summer Sale enjoyed a bumper year back in
2014, when the subsequent GI Woodbine Mile winner
Mondialiste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was offered by the Wertheimer
brothers and sold privately for i190,000. The clearance rate,
and consequently turnover, fell markedly last July but the first of
two days of trade at this year's event provided an increased
average of i26,198 (+11.5%), while the median also rose to
i16,000, from i15,000. An 11% rise in clearance to 69% led to
an 8% boost in the aggregate, which stood at i2,530,000 for 96
horses sold.
In this session
of breeze-up
horses for the
Flat and young
store horses, it
was the jumping
sector which
monopolised
the top of the
market, with
Haras de la
Source's 2-year-old son of Walk In The Park (Ire) leading the way
when bought by Willie Browne for i150,000.
Runner-up to fellow Montjeu (Ire) stallion Motivator (GB) in
the 2005 Derby, Walk In The Park has become a hot property in
the National Hunt division in recent seasons. From covering
relatively small books at the French farms of Haras du Val
Requet and Haras des Granges, he has sired some highly exciting
young jumpers, including the Willie Mullins-trained duo of
seven-time Grade 1 winner Douvan (Fr) and Min (Fr). He was
switched to stand on Coolmore's National Hunt roster at Grange
Stud for 2016.
Walk In The Park's session-topping gelding, named Roll Again
(Fr) (lot 125), is a son of the dual jumps winner Olina (Fr)
(Dounba), whose first foal is the Grade III-winning chaser
Argentique (Fr) (Saint Des Saints {Fr}). Browne commented,
"This horse is a real rarity on the market. He was expensive but
this is what you have to pay for such good-looking horses. He
will be re-offered next year."
English jumps owner James Douglas-Gordon lost the highly
talented young hurdler Bonito Du Berlais (Fr) (Trempolino) in a
paddock accident last month, but reinvested in French stock on
Thursday when instructing agent Bertrand Le Metayer to go to
i145,000 to secure a Saints Des Saints 2-year-old (lot 87) from
the Haras du Buff draft. The youngster is the third foal of En La
Cruz (Fr), a Robin Des Champs (Fr) half-sister to the top-class
chaser Voy Por Ustedes (Fr) (Villez {Fr}).
"It is unfortunately a sad story with the recent passing of
Bonito du Berlais," said Le Metayer. "This horse reminds me a
lot of him. He has the same profile and offers similar potential
on conformation as well as pedigree. I bought his dam on two
occasions and she was a sound, tough racemare. I knew the
mating with Saint Des Saints would work. We will keep the horse
in France."
In total, four store horses broke the six-figure barrier, including
lot 131, named Duc De Beauchene (Fr), a 3-year-old AQPS
gelding by the recently deceased Saddler Maker (Ire), who was
bought by Hubert Barbe for i145,000. Jehan Bertran de
Balanda will train the Jacques Cypres-bred El Salvator (Fr)
(Network {Ger}) (lot 132), who made i120,000.
The Haras de la Cauviniere freshman Rajsaman (Fr) has had
four first-crop winners to date and his colt out of the
listed-placed Platini (Ger) mare Macina (Ire) was the
highest-priced breezer of the day when knocked down to Sylvain
Vidal for i69,000. Powerstown Stud bought the March-born
colt at Arqana last August for i30,000 and reoffered the
half-brother to Washington Singer S. runner-up Practitioner (GB)
(Dr Fong) (now a three-time winner in Hong Kong under the
name Fat Choy Oohlala) as lot 27. The colt will be trained in
Chantilly by Alessandro Botti.
The sole Frankel (GB) juvenile in the catalogue (lot 12) was
offered by Mocklershill and bought by Armando Duarte for
i42,000. Cont. p7

Jumpers Head Summer Sales Session Cont.
A granddaughter of the dual Classic winner Imagine (Ire)
(Sadler's Wells), the filly's dam Guessing (Kingmambo) is a
half-sister to the group winners Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill),
Viscount Nelson (Ire) (Giant's Causeway) and Kitty Matcham
(Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}).
The Summer Sale continues today in Deauville with another
mixed session of fillies, mares and stallion prospects from 11
a.m. local time.
>Tycoon= Noms Auction Concludes Cont. from p1
The second nomination went the way of Nicole Agent for the
Victorian-based Three Fillies Lodge for A$60,000. Agent said,
AWe recently purchased a lovely young mare off the track and
wanted to give her the best possible chance to succeed as a
broodmare as well, so
we are delighted we
are now able to send
her to one of the best
proven stallions in
Australia.@
The third, and most
expensive, nomination
was bought for
A$60,500 by Balance
Thoroughbreds, a
boutique New South Wales breeder that had been underbidder
on the first two nominations. The fourth was secured by another
New South Wales breeder, Angela Haynes, for A$59,500, while
Iranian-based agent Hamid Nikoumanesh had the winning bid
on the final nomination at A$53,500.
AHamid had contacted me a number of times from Iran about
Written Tycoon just after we had to close his book,@ said
Woodside Park=s Matt Tillett. AThe Everyday Auction platform
worked perfectly as it provided Hamid a means of securing him
the nomination he wanted.@
Tillett added, AThe best thing that we achieved from the
exercise, however, was the exposure to a new range of clients,
as only one of the five successful bidders was a previous client of
ours. We are delighted that the five online nominations
averaged A$58,000, because it proves to us that the market
truly values our stallion as highly as we do.@
PURSE INCREASES TAKE EFFECT Increases in minimum prize money for Sydney=s country TAB
and provincial meetings announced last November after
wagering tax parity legislation was passed in New South Wales
will take effect from July 1. Minimum prize money for both
levels will increase A$5,000, meaning minimum purses of
A$27,000 per race for provincial races (up 23%) and A$20,000
for country races (up 33%).
AThese increases are part of a package of more than A$21
million in prize money increases for country TAB and provincial
races,@ said Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V=landys. AThe
prize money increases coincide with the second year of the
phase-in of wagering parity. These increases would not have
been possible without the Baird Government=s reduction in
state wagering taxes to bring us in line with Victoria over the
next five years. We particularly thank Troy Grant for his
leadership on this matter.@
Racing NSW will also stage 15 Country Showcase meetings
over the next year, which will boast a minimum purse of
A$30,000 per race.
AThe Showcase meetings provide excellent opportunities to
focus greater attention on some of NSW=s emerging country cup
meetings,@ said V=landys. AIncreases to minimum prize money
and Country Showcase meetings come on top of the highly
successful expansion of The Championships to include
country and provincial racing and the implementation of
Highway races at most metropolitan Saturday meetings.@
In other news for Sydney racing stakeholders, Racing NSW and
the Australian Turf Club announced Thursday that nomination
and acceptance fees would be eliminated for listed races at ATC
tracks from Aug. 1. Cont. p8
