Togas• Romans clothing is most

reconized with the Toga• The Toga was a long piece

of wool cloth wrapped around the body in a stylish fashion

• The colour of the toga showed who was rich (patricians) and who was poor (plebians)

Togas

• A toga in the off-white color of the undyed wool that was worn by adult male citizens.

• An off-white toga with a large purple / reddish border was only to be worn by high ranking politicians (senator, consuls, etc.).

• An artificially whitened toga would be worn by candidates for political office.

• After a death, a dark toga was worn to show you were in mourning. This is much like funerals today.

Tunics

• A tunic is like a t-shirt.

• It was made from a folded piece of cloth sewn up the side with arm holes and a neck hole cut out.

• It was often held with a belt at the waist.

• Patricians wore white tunics under their togas.

• Plebians could often only afford a darker / offwhite tunic

• Depending on the season you could wear different tunics

Women’s Fashion

Peplos

• A peplos was a sleeveless dress that was put together much like a tunic.

Tunica (Chiton)

• Like the men’s tunic, the Tunica was much like a T-Shirt

• Women made themselves fashionable by using buttons ans pins to hold their tunicas together.

Stola

Married women dress is layers.After marriage, a woman would begin to wear

the stola, a long tunic held together by sigle straps at the top.

It was worn OVER another tunica.
