As the only program of its kind in Western Canada, Kwantlen’s Bachelor of Fashion and Technology Program is becoming a destination school for local, national and international students. The Program’s curriculum is noted for its industry focus and on fomulating design solutions that are both creative and marketable for the global apparel economy. Since 2005, over 90% of our graduates have been able to successfully enter the apparel industry with qualifications and experience which enable them to quickly progress to supervisory positions, technical specialties, and to move into leadership roles. This dynamic program features industry-based education and training using leading-edge technology; class projects facilitated by prominent apparel companies and an extensive internship that often results in employment. Identifying the needs for sustainability within the fashion industry is integrated throughout the program.

Most people who apply to the program hold a passionate life long interest in fashion. They may come directly from high school, transfer from other institutions, be mature individuals returning to the profession, or industry personnel upgrading their skills. The Fashion Program also welcomes international students. Applicants have a desire to undertake the depth of study that a degree program offers.

Kwantlen also offers a two-year Fashion Diploma program (the first two years of the degree program) and a two-year Fashion Marketing Diploma. Applicants who have prior learning experience may challenge segments of the program and gain advanced standing at various levels. Industry personnel may wish to take a specific course or courses on a part-time basis to complement their job skills.

“My 4 years at Kwantlen were some of the most fun filled, intense, hard working and rewarding years of my life. The program gives you what you put into it. If you are passionate about the fashion industry and it is your dream to work in it, this is the best place to get your career started. Not only will you leave the program grounded in the fundamentals of the industry (design, marketing, production) but you will also leave with industry experience and contacts. Whether you want to work in New York City or Vancouver, this program helps you build your career and take you wherever it is that you want to go.”

“Kwantlen was everything that I wanted in a fashion design program. With a penchant for design but a lack of technical expertise, I searched for a school that would fill that knowledge gap. That is exactly what I got with Kwantlen and I was immediately able to put everything I learned to use in my business. Without the education and ongoing support that I receive from the faculty, Evan & Dean would not be where it’s at today.”

tiPs For sUccess in the Fashion ProGraMs The fashion industry is a very demanding profession. Success in the field is related to commitment, enthusiasm and hard work. To that end, the fashion programs simulate an industrial environment, placing high demands on students as they develop working skills and knowledge. Students need to be prepared to spend time outside the class equal to time spent in class. For example, a 3 hour class will require a minimum of 3 hours work outside class time. Students who take a full load (5 courses - 20 to 25 hours) in a semester will need to commit at least 50 hours total per week to their studies. Our experience is that students who take a full load and work part-time are overwhelmed and too exhausted to learn. We advise that students who need to be employed, limit their working hours to no more than 8 hours a week. If you must work more than 8 hours per week, then you should take a reduced course load. Some students work full-time for a year before entering the program to save money in order to concentrate on their studies once they are enrolled in the program.
