Juggun’s versatile and seasoned repertoire of media involve-ment includes acting for Pakistani and Canadian theatre, advertisements and acclaimed theatrical performances in such commercially successful plays as, Mano Salwa, Vasl, Pyaasi and Kaaghaz Ki Nao. She has also acted in music videos for Shehzad Roy, Jal and the Mekaal Hasan Band and has played lead roles in movies such as Khamosh Raho and Pink Ludoos. Juggun is also an occasional model and has been a refreshing talk show host for several Pakistani television channels, for shows including VIPs Only for AAG TV and Honestly speaking with Juggun Kazim for PTV and Yeh Subh Tumhari Hey for Express News. Indeed Juggun has always been passionate about acting and she did her first commercial at the age of four and her first commercial play at the age of fourteen!

Ceaselessly engaged in the arts and media, Juggun is an energetic, creative and highly visible personality. Well-spo-ken in both Urdu and English, Juggun started her profes-sional acting and modeling career under the name ‘Jay Kazim’ in Toronto, where she was approached by a Canadian modeling agency for representation as a commercial model. While signed with this agency, Juggun successfully acted in two music videos and was then approached by her current Canadian agents. With them, Juggun starred in an advertisement for a well-known beverage company which ran for two seasons due to its popularity. She also completed numerous other commercials coupled with her work in theatre whicheventually led her to audition for a lead role in the feature film, Pink Ludoos. Not surprisingly, after only the second stage of auditions she was chosen for the lead role in the film.

Juggun’s natural beauty, talent, professionalism and down to earth demeanour make her a natural choice for those who seek high quality work. Indeed a tangible

manifestation of this is her selection by Garnier, a leading international hair and skin care brand, as their sole Pakistani Spokesperson.Beneath the glamour of being a celebrity, Juggun is a real woman like any other. She is a mother and is also one of the most socially responsible members of the industry. Juggun’s social work is a private aspect of her life fuelled by her belief in caring, not just for herself but for others and the world around her. The actress supports organizations that work for causes such as, the prevention of violence against women and children, education and cancer awareness and research.

Here Juggun Kazim talks to us about her recent experi-ences as a host, actress and Garnier’s Local Spokesper-son.

1. What is the secret behind the fresh and radiant look of Juggun Kazim?Natural beauty products, Garnier, loads of water and regular exercise. I also recently re-colored my hair for the latest Garnier Color Naturals com-mercial, and I think brown suits us women here in Pakistan. 2. Tell us about your latest work, projects and experiences?I recently visited Beirut for my new Gar-nier Color Naturals commercial - Amazing experience I have to admit. I was shooting with a lovely Lebanese director, Leyla. Work wise the team was extremely professional and the work was fun and exciting. From a travelling point of view I had a blast. Lebanon is a beautiful place. The people are very beautiful, friendly and charming.

3. What are your current projects and work involvements?I’ve finally set up my production house where I’m producing my very first serial. Soon I will be back on air with a NEW fabulous show which I am working on.

4. A beauty tip you would like to share with us?My mantra is to go natural. Use hair products such as shampoos and coloring that are Natural!

PakistanInstitute of Fashion and Design Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) is a very unique institute, which has visibly revolutionized fashion and design education in Pakistan.

2012 is a year of great significance for PIFD. For the first time it displayed the work of graduation students of three new departments apart from Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, namely Jewellery Design

and Gemological Sciences, Furniture Design and Manufacturing and Textile Design. It holds great hopes and aspirations especially for graduating students from these new departments.

This year, forty seven students of Fashion Design, made a collection of four garments each. They dedicated their final semester to develop and execute their creations. A spe-cial feature is that all students designed and tailored the garments themselves. The amount of effort put in by every student was evident in the final presentation.

As for other detais,it is pertinent to share that the graduating batch of Fashion Marketing and Merchandising

comprised of seventeen students. They havel presented the final year project to the jury comprising of French consultants, eminent fashion industry leaders and senior faculty members.

Their projects are diverse in nature and not only capture the essence of academic program but also realities of the corporate world. It covers all the aspects of fashion marketing from design, costing, market survey and promo-tions.

The department of Jewelry Design and Gemological Sci-ences showcased the work of twenty five students. The pioneering graduating batch from this department made a collection of five pieces each. Four are jewellery pieces whereas the fifth one is an experimental, non wearable article. The students were given a semester to develop and execute a collection which was hand manufactured from the initial stage to the last. Each piece is a labor of love with hours of hard work and conscientious detailing put into finishing the pieces. And that is why three out of them adorn the pages of this magazine. As for others, some of the toppers will appear in the next issue of this online publication.

AshrafHuma

This is Huma Ashraf, a recent graduate from PIFD 2008-2012 (Pakistan Institute of Fashion & Design).Choosing a fashion designer career was the beginning of an exciting journey of hard work, creativity and tenacity. What’s fashion-able and “in” one day can be old and outdated the next. So I knew

straight away, launching a successful career as a designer would require preparation, dedication and ambition & I tried my best to carry through and put in effect, all three ingredients; by being creative, living all things fashion and endure talent in my very own rite.

Throughout my entire course, I gained variety of work experience, including my tenure at PFDC Fashion Week and at MEERAS (Nilofer Couture) where I am working at current as well.

It can easily be seen from the designs, part of my port-

folio that they include well turned out flair of textures and colors. Also my innate understanding about the latest trends made me competent enough in my working with various fabrications & colors. It also goes out to show those artwork and illustration skills that I have possessed and owned by the time. I enjoy experimenting with my own creations; while being flexible as well as creative, I like to be goal oriented at the same time working in a diverse way even being in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnical environment.

Professional Focus/ObjectiveStarting out in the industry can be difficult, but there are other potential places a fashion designer career can take one to, So my first & foremost focus was & always has been to gather and go on from a challenging position as Fashion Designer in a professional, artistic environment that utilizes and expands my competencies, skills, education and experience & where my abilities & capacity for hard work can lead to the opportunities of exposure, growth & advancement. Some of these options might work out well if one cannot seem to get their foot in the door working for a big name fashion designer so I’ve always got my objectivesquite vibrant & full of energy.

Page 15: Fashion Central-Oct2012

Future GoalsProjections for a career as a fashion designer are expected to grow more slowly than other occupations. Continued population growth will require more clothing but demands for more affordable fashions will dominate.

While keeping in mind the versatility of work and other obligatory things as well as my willingness to obtain a challenging role as a fashion designer professionally in a way that my skills & expertise in the fashion field could add to the growth and amelioration of the firm as well as enhance my knowledge further, I was much profound on getting a chance to work for MEERAS (Nilofer Couture). For the near future I would like to add to those skills of mine by working on & with MEERAS, one of the well-known names around when we talk about Fashion Pakistan.

I always knew that talented & creative designers who’ve learned their sewing skills as an apprentice to a skilled tailor or seamstress can be successful as a self-employed designer if they also are willing to work hard and have some business savvy on how to market their product. That’s why I have always had a mindset towards emerging up with my very own entrepreneurship in coming future after analyzing a suitable time so that without being rusted over, I could introduce individuals with some of the exceptions that I’ve got in-store in my mind for some of the better sights people have ever came across.

Collection•My collection “Winds of tranquility” explores, hidden wonders traveling can lead us to.•The main focus of the collection is to explore the relevancy of the satchels and the flags that people carry; the flow of colors and the volume created in the air which is also quite inspiring. The color pellet is motley and multi-colored patch work.

InspirationTraveling can do wonders and my muse to travel took me to the cultural festival (urs) of “Sheikh Daud Bandagi Kirmani” which inspired me towards the satchels that people tie to the stand, colorful fabrics treated as bag packs wrapped around which add colors to the dust in the wind. The flags and different patterns of satchels all together create a symphony of single spectrum.

Page 16: Fashion Central-Oct2012

TextilesFor the textile I focused on travelers, nomads and malangs in the “urs”, who carried the bag packs at the satchels. Through combination of bags and flags print, the base of main fabric is patch work.

SilhouetteThe cut lines were inspired from the fall of the flags and the shrine. I translated the exaggeration of flags and the bags through giving volume and gathers in the silhouettes.

Project WorkDid a comprehensive project of 11 weeks on Kids Wear with Adventure Theme holding Design development ac-cording to the customer profile. Selected designs were put into stitching and selected garments were taken to PFDC Fashion Week 2011.

An Eastern Wear project of Fashion Drawing inspired from Russian Architecture.A Men’s Wear project inspired by Safari using three boards to define customer’s interest. One describing his Social activities, 2nd holding his Life/Living Style and the other having details of his modes of witnessing various Exhibi-tions.

Did a project of Pattern making (one of my key strengths) in which Patterns were made in Regular size of a five year old Kid.Made personal Jacket of my own size in accordance to cope with different customer demands. To help out in selecting appropriate Fabrications in accordance with the themes, Inspired from “Victorian era movie” (Marie Antoinette), a Jacket was designed & later on stitched after doing selection from a verity of fabric options.

The above verses pronounce to a floor that had led me how to live a life. This report is about an innocent girl whose colourful stage of life has entered to the shadows of darkness. The girl who’s light of life has been accidently stolen from her.

The girl who could see world around herself once could only rely on the darkness of world. She is walking blind folded. She had gone astray her eyes. She can’t see anymore, she is screened. This second phase of her life where she is living is a miserable existence. But the inspiration is how she transfer her miserable life into redden life.

This is what this whole report is about. How this story had inspired me to design my attires. And show the world what I have achieved through my designs from such a disincentive which somehow relates to my own personal life. Then how these designs were transfer into practical developments through draping, then its pattern, and to the final stage sewing. And then what it showed the world through the designs.

Page 20: Fashion Central-Oct2012

Over the next few years, I am looking forward to do fashion shows and exhibitions to step into Pakistani fashion market and create my own label with a very ethnic design philosophy. Besides, I’m joining my university’s faculty department to remain stringed to the teaching and learning process. I am looking forward to distinguish myself as a fashion designer who wants to take Pakistan’s customs and heritage to international forum and prove the world that our country is not all dark but it has a rich heritage that is still keeping the country intact. I want to design clothes that speak story of every corner of my country in a mature manner and show all the colors associated to it.

The first round of HT Brunch Dialogues kick started with Madhur Bhandarkar, Siddharth Roy Kapur and Raj Kumar Gupta in conversation about the filmmaker’s role in por-traying the Indian female lead. A short musical interlude was followed by the second round of HT Brunch Dialogues. This round witnessed a truly remarkable artist from yesteryear’s Indian cinema – Sharmila Tagore. There was an incredible & awe-inspiring chat with the super-heroines of today, Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor. The discussion revolved around the way things have changed (or stayed the same) for the

Hindi film heroine. With the release of Madhur Bhandarkar and Kareena Kapoor’s much awaiting film Heroine right around the corner, the discussion couldn’t get bigger than this!

HT Brunch Dialogues led by Vir Sanghvi was all in all an interesting trilogy. The emcee of the events was Maria Goretti. Travel In LondonLondon Underground

8 million people live and work in the one of the world’s leading financial and cultural cosmopolitan city called Lon-don .An average to 2 million people uses the underground system every day, however; 150 years ago this transport mechanism didn’t even exist. London in 1820 was con-gested from people, tight housing and traffic, this caused problems for workers to arrive to work hence they would choose to live in London to be closer to work. An ambitious solution was needed in order to ease the pressure on this great city

The first steam train railways begun in 1825 and 25 years later, Kings Cross was a terminal to allow commuters into London but the rail road companies were not permitted to expand any further. This meant that the 750,000 workers who arrived at the rail road each day had to find their way to work in the heart of the city, causing grid lock. London was grinding to a halt and the only way for the railway to link into the city centre was underground. The Times news-paper were against idea but Charles Pearson persuaded London that this system was needed. Pearson knew the public would accept his concept, it would allow commuters from far to enter into London therefore easing the conges-tion in the city.

The metropolitan railway company was the first under-ground railway and broke ground in 1860, the building method used was a “cut and cover “process. It was very expensive and involved digging tunnels which were over 20 feet wide, laying two tracks side by side and then brick-ing these over to replace the road. The Metropolitan line opened in 1863 and connected three major terminals at Paddington, Euston and Kings Cross. John fowler bid to run the new underground system on compressed air. The

idea would be to blow trains through tunnels and sucked back by air generated by compressors at each end of the line. The major flaw was that compressed air leaked con-tinuously through the tunnel joints. Therefore, Metropolitan railway was forced to borrow steam railways from Great Western in order to start its service. It was an immediate success carrying 40,000 passengers on its first day running from 8am to 8pm every 15 minutes per day.

The success of the Metropolitan railway encouraged other companies to start up and in 1874 London’s second underground railway was setup, this was the London Metropolitan and District which ran along the Themes and Embankment. By 1884 a complete circular underground had been constructed by Metropolitan and District railway called the Circle line and is still in use today.

With the turn of the new century, a technology came its way. Steam was a troubled service because of the pollu-tion and the “cut and cover “technique was causing trouble on the London roads. New advances came from the U.S and Germany called the electro rail which would replace the steam trains but how was the London road problem going to be solved.

A South African Engineer called James Henry Great-head was going to take the builders deeper underground was his new technique called a tunnelling shield, this would allow workers to dig the ground under the tunnel-ling shield and when a hole large enough was made, the device would simply be pushed forward and the tunnel

lining would be used to erect behind the shield holding the ground up and the process repeated. The shield was the single most important engineering invention to create the London underground.

In the 1900s, permission had been granted to various transport com-panies who were proposing deep underground routes. In 1890, South London Railway made history to make the first underground trans-port by electric traction. In 1900 an-other electric train power company called the Central London Railway was opened by Queen Victoria’s

son, the Princes of Wales. The line was built entirely of a tunnel 10 ft diameter from east to west of Lon-don and over 14 million commuters was carried in its first years. Central London’s line became popular be-cause of its flat rate fare.

Charles Tyson Yerkes a business man from United States brought access to several important things to the Lon-don underground, American money used to build these very expensive trains at the turn of the century and also American technology particularly in the electrical field. By 1902 Yerkes became the chairman of the newly formed Underground Electric Railway Company of London ltd with a capital of £4million. He also built a large power plant in

Page 64: Fashion Central-Oct2012

Chelsea which was an ideal location for supplying coal along the Themes. He believed that if you supplied your own power, you would increase profits. The Lots Road Power Plant was one of the biggest generator stations in the world. Yerkes died in 1905 in New York and a new gen-eral manager called Albert Stanley an American, bought all the bus companies in London, the only mode of trans-port that was making a profit and he also employed Frank Pick, the man responsible for the branding of the London underground producing the circle with a bar across it and rebranded the company to The Underground.

The underground lines expanded, in 1908 one line came to the surface just off north of London in open country side and within the next few years Hampstead Garden suburb developed around the basis of the underground station. Albert Stanley realised there was great profit to be made in the expansion to the suburbs but so did their arch rival the Metropolitan Railway, together the two companies expanded the railway outside of London. Metropolitan Rail-way had a smart idea of buying out land either side of the railway out in the countryside and use that land to develop houses increasing their profits. By 1930s, control of all the tube companies was taken over by the newly formed Lon-don Passenger Transport Board; their role was to see the continuous expansion of the underground. Initially develop-ment of this project required investment from private.

The technology, design, and innovation with London underground transport system is extraordinary, for example introducing underground and under water tunnel. Use of electronic ticketing system and the London underground Map itself is a amazing example of graphic design, demonstrating the complex routes in the most simplified manner .

The Metropolitan Railway Company was the first rail-way company to introduce underground railway, and the success of which attracted many more private investors attention. In 1997, when Labour party was in power chose Public Private Partnership (PPP) and finally in 2003 Trans-port of London took responsibility of London Underground (LUL). Train operation was to remain a public sector responsibility under London Underground. (LUL). London Underground has got huge impact in the city’s economy, consumer’s businesses managing the service. London underground carries one billion passengers a year. The Mayors Transport strategy sets out the route to achieve Mayors vision which is to ‘Deliver a world class underground for a world-class city.

Inside Fashion’s Night Out 2012

VOGUE’s 2012 Fashion’s Night Out was the biggest yet, even its official T-shirt was an unprecedented success - selling out at the Condé Nast Worldwide store in less than an hour. We even found a few lost shoppers inside Vogue House, trying to track down the event’s stylish item.In Mayfair, the streets were alive with music - from Labrinth at Emporio Armani’s Secret Garden Party to live perfor-mances from four of the capital’s emerging musicians at the Samsung Stage - which attracted hordes of crowds.

Burberry’s Bond Street store was - as usual at FNO - packed to the brim, as shoppers turned up to watch its band-of-the-moment, Southern. We wonder if they noticed the label’s current muse, handsome Roo Panes, watching from the sidelines. One-girl-band Delilah took to the Topshop windows for a special gig, while Hermés got people dancing in the streets with its Swing Patrol band. A lone accordion player standing on a Bond Street corner was cheered on by crowds - a truly perfect sight to see. The link between fashion and music could not have been more obvious or more enjoyable.

Elsewhere in Covent Garden, the Chanel human vending machines went down a storm - manned by hidden people who dispensed the chosen products into Chanel bags. Opening Ceremony took its Korean-themed street party to the next level, with Japanese-inspired cocktails, delicious food and a trailer - in which shoppers could get their hair done in the style of Manga girls.Of course, the party of the night was undeniably the Vogue and Mulberry official FNO soirée - held at the label’s Bond Street store. The star guests were in no short supply - Manolo Blahnik, Edie Campbell, Roland

Mouret, Christopher Kane, Daisy Lowe, Suki Waterhouse, Portia Freeman, Matthew Williamson and Erdem to name but a few - as were the decadent refreshments. Oys-ters and Champagne anyone? “The crowd is wonderful and there’s a real buzz here,” Suki Waterhouse told us. “I love having the chance to meet all the designers too. Emma Hill, for example, is amazing - I really appreciate her work.”Unsurprisingly, some of the most popular spots involved food, as lengthy queues formed outside Missoni’s ice cream van, Daks’ popcorn stall and Hotel Chocolat’s pop-up venue. The talk between Francesca Burns and Bronwyn Cosgrave on the legacy of Coco Chanel (featuring a sur-prise fashion show with Edie Campbell and Pixie Geldof), at the label’s Bond Street store was such a hit with shop-pers that even latecomer Daisy Lowe had to stand on the stairs because there were no seats left.

We could go on about the Hershesons’ 15-minute blow-dries; Radley’s adorable Scottie dogs; how Louis Vuitton’s Yayoi Kusama windows became the sight everyone wanted a photograph of; and the aesthetically-pleasing men who sprayed us with Jo Malone’s Blackberry & Bay scent; but it’d be difficult to stop. Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out 2012 brought together a bigger, more lively and fashion-ob-sessed community than ever before. “It feels like one huge fashion festival,” Portia Freeman told us. “It’s just so good to see everyone together; there’s no other place where you’d see so many fashion names in one place.
