L’ EDITORIALE
As the old times of small town coziness are defnitely over, the reinvention of the Italian fashion system is going ahead at full
speed. Both during Pitti and Milano Moda Uomo the atmosphere perceived by buyers and infuencers alike has been nothing less than energizing. In Florence there were truly many novelties to be experienced, both from the product and the business point of view (see our full reportage from page 48). Also, there was a conspi-cuous air of optimism that was largely absent only one year ago (see our range of interviews at page 13). Not to mention the debut of Massimo Giorgetti at the creative helm of Emilio Pucci, which in ist freshness was a clear highlight (see our portrait at page 76). Milan, where new names are making an ever bigger contribution, did then follow along these same lines. First and foremost, with Gucci’s vulcanic exploit, which has effectively purveyed Alessan-dro Michele among the absolute top of opinion leaders within the global fashion elite, maybe even ahead of a celebrated genius such as Miuccia Prada (see buyers‘ opinions at page 19). She did ho-wever surprise everyone again by joyously interpreting what I call the contemporary myth of
‚nerd dolls‘, meaning the childlike style
of modern day programmers-turned-billionaires, halfway between Silicon Valley and the dollhouse (see our catwalk analysis at page 34). True upstarts such as Damir Doma, Les Hommes and Face-tasm have to be duly mentioned as juvenile motors of reinvention alongside Zegna, Jil Sander, Boglioli, Canali and Neil Barrett, who are all in the middle of a convincingly new creative journey. Not to be forgotten, youthful Dolce & Gabbana did it again and unleashed their joyful imagination in an enthusing way. Well done, all of them. ●
Change of course

What is the secret at the base of Cesare Attolini’s success?I have to mention the many years of hard work and abnegation, together with a clear will not to relent on distribution matters. We strongly believe that quality lies in tradition and that an exclusive network of dealers is necessary to preserve it. For many years demand for our products has exceeded pro-duction. We did, however, choose to grow organically.
What are the key characteristics of your distributors? They are good ambassadors of our brand who do understand the nature of the product. On this basis we have established a dealer network that has pushed our sales up by 10% in 2014, even as the overall market stalled.
Also, we continue to invest in retail. After openings in New York and Istanbul, we feel re-ady for directs stores in London and Milan.
What are the main areas of your business?Firstly, 90% of our revenues are generated through exports. Then again, half of the 10.000 suits we produce stems from bespo-ke tailoring, while the other half consists of ready-to wear. Both types of product are meticulously handmade in Naples, in 32 hours by our master tailors. Besides our core business of suits and jackets we also produce shirts, trousers and ties, while with regards to knitwear and leatherware we rely on exter-nal partners. In this case the design and mo-delling are strictly provided by us. Our latest creations in this feld are leather jackets and bags, characterized by an intricate pattern of wickerwork and silk.
What is your relationship with menswear fashion as shown on the catwalk? It seems to me that for the past ten years sartorial styles have quite infuenced the runway. Classic menswear should therefore never be perceived as something dusty, as it is a collection of classy timeless items that are seasonally subject to minuscule changes. Class, however, is not expressed by the sole height of the price. We are costly, but at a price of approximately 4.500 euro per suit we do not participate in the race of who of-fers the most expensive product available on the market. ●

From our perspective, our strongest markets are still China, Japan and South Korea, but things have gone well in Italy too, even though it’s more of a niche market for us».
good vibrations
came from the catwalks
There are largely good vibrations from the catwalks of Milan as well, which were at-tended by Italian buyers in their droves and seem to confrm the return to growth forecast by a series of macroeconomic indi-cators. For some time now, Michele norsa has been emphasising the fact that Italy has reclaimed its status as Ferragamo’s third-biggest market (€111m the Italian turnover, +9%), even if this is mainly down to tourist shopping. Sales are also on the up for cor-neliani, which has registered steady growth in the frst six months of the year. Before the brand’s Milan catwalk show, marketing and fnance director Maurizio corneliani told he was «surprised by the return of domestic buyers, even from secondary cities that are not main touristic destination, such as Bari and Bologna». The news will come as great relief to the sector and are by no means isolated cases. It was a sentiment echoed by andrea Della valle as he met the press during the presentation of the collections of the Tod’s group: «There’s a positive atmosphere, a different feeling, both among consumers and Italian buyers». ●

È diffcile mettere tutti d’accordo. So-prattutto i buyer.

Having said that, though the nov-elties drew appreciation in some quarters, particularly from Far Eastern buyers, re-tailers from Europe and the USA did ex-press some doubts.

we’ve seen men’s garments designed for young men and other agender men’s pieces, which are effectively stolen from womenswear. But how will we dress the real man?
‘‘
The upshot is that retailers have to keep in mind both the local and foreign clientele, cre-ating a hybrid “glocal” proposal, really per-sonalized. In this context, it’s no coincidence that the hot trend for the hottest season of the year is mix and match. That said, as consult-ant buyer tiberio Pellegrinelli confrmes, men’s wardrobes certainly won’t be missing classic shorts, loose trousers, bomber jackets, denim blazers and sneakers (though boat shoes would be a more welcome addition). But the real key is to assemble the various pieces
in the most individual way possible, with the objective of creating a unique style. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the two Ital-ian fashion events dedicated to menswear are increasingly become one sole entity, in-fuencing one another. Pitti showcased moschino, with a show judged by many buy-ers to be a tad over eccentric, while Pal Zileri - a historic men’s fashion brand - made its debut on the catwalk in Milan. What’s more, ste-fano Pilati’s work at Italian luxury stalwart ermene-gildo Zegna constituted one of the most innovative shows of the season. However, buy-
ers still go to the Tuscan capital to formulate an idea of what could be the easy seller items for their stores, thanks also to good value for money. And then they make the trip to the capital of Italian fashion to pick up their state-ment pieces.
Gucci steals Prada’s throne
The most widely discussed collection of this round - due in no small measure to the fact that it harnessed the current agender move-ment - was the new collection from gucci, de-signed by alessandro michele and supported by ceo marco Bizzarri. It meant that Gucci stole Prada’s long-term status as the most con-troversial show. In such a dynamic environ-ment (thanks also to Expo 2015, which has brought with it an injection of optimism and enthusiasm), emerging designers were able to create space for themselves and win plaudits from buyers. «I have found a new energy in Milan that I’ve not seen for several seasons. This holds especially true for a new genera-tion of designers that is growing in a place traditionally dominated by established fashion houses» stated eric Jennings, fashion director of New York’s saks Fifth avenue. “marcelo
Burlon is at the head of this “new Milan”, followed by msgm and n°21. And I thought the neil Barrett show was simply perfect: a new urban style wearable from the frst to the last look, something we shouldn’t under-estimate given that wearability is sometimes considered optional. Ermenegildo Zegna was excellent. Prada also did well, putting its own stamp on one of the biggest trends right now: sport-techno. And the new Gucci has a very well-defned direction – we’ll have to wait and see what the customers say». giorgio armani celebrated the fashion house’s 40th birthday with a perfectly on-trend catwalk show» add-ed Jennings. On the subject of Pitti, Jennings said: «It was a great edition, very young and contemporary. We believe in Pitti and are col-laborating together to celebrate ‘Italian Sarto-rial Style’ in our stores». mario dell’oglio, the president of camera Buyer and owner of Palermo’s dell’oglio, is on much the same wavelength: «There’s been a really bubbly atmosphere, not just in Milan but at Pitti as well, where at least 40% of companies re-newed their offering with a mix of formal chic and accessories loved by twenty-somethings. The staging of the pavilions, which always refect new trends, was excellent once again». maurizio Purifcato, from antonia in Mi-lan, says: «The will to do new things was certainly
not lacking at Pitti. With our ‘Goldmaniac’ installation in the ‘Futuro Maschile’ pavilion, we were the frst retailers to open a temporary shop inside the fair». Nonetheless, there was no shortage of criticism. Some Italian retailers found the Florence collections to be uninterest-ing and overly repetitive: «We know that it’s more diffcult to innovate for the summer, but for high-end stores like ours this show offers very little». Not all the buyers were convinced of Milan, either. «Rather than the looks them-selves, I found the details to be interesting
- the accessories and backpacks by Fendi, for example. I saw the best suits in showrooms» explained Ken downing, fashion director of the Dallas-based neiman marcus.
Fashion From the street
With regards to the often-mentioned agender trend, Downing states: «It’s a perfect edito-rial idea, but the same can’t be said in terms of sales». It’s an opinion shared by cesare tadolini of Modena’s L’incontro 2, who expresses the view of many of his Italian colleagues: «We’ve seen men’s items designed for young men and other agender men’s pieces, which have effectively sto-len from womenswear. But how will we dress the real man?». In Japan, the buyers don’t see it as a problem and in fact appreciate the mixture. After applauding the show of Japanese brand Facetasm, hirofumi Kurino, co-founder and creative advisor of United arrows in Tokyo, says: «The great thing about this collection and those of other Japanese designers particularly strong in men’s fashion is that their pieces are the ones you later see on the streets». Kurino also appreciates Prada, missoni and emporio armani shows. «In reality - declared Beppe angiolini, owner of sugar in Arezzo and honorary president of the camera dei Buyer - this round of shows has completed what I call the personalisation of menswear. Designers and companies have fo-cused on different trends - they suggest, but they impose nothing. The real message is that every-one should dress how they like. Now like never before, what you see on the streets is borrowed, mixed up and then given back to the people».
BudGets remain staBle
From a business perspective, buyers speak of budgets that remain generally in line with pre-vious years. Interviewees from Mainland China and Hong Kong are watching attentively to see what measures the Beijing government is going to take, with particular regard to cuts to import duties and the consequent VAT increase. The Jap-anese continue to be undermined by the weak-ness of the yen, while the Europeans are still in a state of economic uncertainty and Americans are feeling the effects of the strong dollar, which contributed to a contraction of foreign shopping on American soil. The only signifcant, quantita-tive cuts were imposed by Russian buyers, who reduced their orders by 20-30% due to the en-during crisis and unstable exchange rate. Buyers who increased their orders did so with a clear goal in mind, though this was not always made clear: either ahead of new openings (this was the case of Saks Fifth Avenue, for example, who have six store openings on the horizon), or be-cause they’re investing in online shopping and/or gray market. Also in this case, it impossible to speak of a unanimous opinion. ●

A world split into four partsSeabreeze, Blue Mood, Sunbleached and Essential: these are the names of the four capsule
collections that make up the Bugatti collection for men for Spring/Summer 2016, shown at Pitti
Immagine Uomo. The division has been strict, with moods that are clear and easy, conceived
to spark the buyers’ enthusiasm and their wish to purchase more products, states the German
company. Indeed, each capsule is a mini collection that contains all major types of clothing, from
knitwear and tops to trousers and blazers, including sports jackets and dust coats. The variety and
contemporary look of the outerwear is especially impressive: relaxed, masculine, high quality and
with savvy detailing, it amounts to the brand’s crown jewel this season. Bugatti is looking forward to
a busy 2015, during which the challenge will be to maintain positions in Russia and to strengthen
exports overall. In 2014, the Herford holding company (which, in addition to Bugatti, also possesses
other brands, proprietary or licensed, such as Eduard Dressler, Daks and Wilvorst) totalled
revenues of 220 million euro, up by 3.5% (not including the licenses). Currently, sales abroad are
45% of the total turnover, with Italy being the leading importing country. In addition to the quality of
its collections, the meticulous timing of seasonal lines is another element that the company applies
to ensure success, as an essential factor to satisfy retailers. Investments are therefore geared
towards optimizing logistics and processes, with the support of cutting edge technology.

Brand come IÕm Isola Marras, Moschino Boutique, Pollini, Philosophy, Dondup, CŽdric Charlier, Alice San Diego, Maison Olivia, Citizens of Humanity, Alessandro DellÕAcqua, Bagutta, Messagerie, Isabel Benenato, Saucony, per citarne alcuni. (c.me.)
200 more square meters of styleIn its 25th year of operation, Clan is increasing its foor space on via Pontaccio 15, in Milan. The
owner, Fabio Bisogno, had been very perceptive when he opened the store 25 years ago, on a via
Pontaccio that was very different from today, with very few shops. Today, the store has become a
700 m2 boutique, following the recent addition of the 200 m2 top foor, which has been modeled
to resemble a showroom, with the clothes set out to create different looks, based on combinations
of items from different brands. “With a total of 70 mainly Italian made brands on sale, we aim to
dress a customer who does not appreciate uniformity,” says Fabio Bisogno. “A chic woman, with a
rock and roll heart, and a man who wants more from his clothes than just a cover up. This is why
we like to combine the more well-known brands with younger labels. Names like I’m Isola Marras,
Moschino Boutique, Pollini, Philosophy, Dondup, CŽdric Charlier, Alice San Diego, Maison
Olivia, Citizens of Humanity, Alessandro Dell’Acqua, Bagutta, Messagerie, Isabel Benenato,
Saucony, to name just a few”. Now Fabio Bisogno is ready to start selling online: “We will launch
in the frst half of 2016, with an innovative selling concept. For us, our direct relationship with the
customer will always play the major role.”

Uno

vealed that they were dreaming up a format that would inject excitement into the city and strengthen its role in the world of European fashion. In the meantime, B & B will return to the former Tempelhof airport after a year-long hiatus between 7 and 9 July. This time it will occupy just three hangars. Hangar 5 will be dedicated to an exhibition of start-ups from various sectors, including fashion, sport, life-style, mobility, augmented reality and cutting-edge gadgets. Hangar 6 will be a real snapshot of the legendary sportswear and young fashion show’s soul, with collections taking in denim, streetwear and urbanwear. Finally, Hangar 7 will play host to cookies, a selection of chil-dren’s fashion. B & B’s return to Tempelhof will see involvement from around 200 brands, with a dozen or so hailing from Italy. None-theless, one of the pillars of Berlin Fashion Week - especially for the depth and breadth of its offering - continues to be Premium, which will run at Station-Berlin between 8 and 10 July. Over the same dates, the contemporary fashion show seek will be taking place at Arena Berlin. This season, for the very frst time, it will be fanked by Bright, the show comprising streetwear, lifestyle, sneaker cul-ture and board sports, which will be leaving the Warenhaus Jandorf for the location on the banks of the Spree. This move enables Bright to increase its exhibition area from 3500 to 5000m2 and to synchronise with Seek on some aspects. Both shows are also connected to Premium via a non-stop shuttle service. Anita tillmann, the owner and managing director of Premium and Seek who recently launched #fashiontech Berlin, a series of conferences on the future of fashion in the digital era, welcomed the change represented by Zalando’s acquisition of B & B, stating: «I believe that innovation is always positive
and I’m happy to welcome all new events that move forward with a signifcant concept and give added value to Berlin». Panorama Ber-lin owner Jörg wichmann’s position was less defned, ahead of Panorama’s run at the ExpoCenter City at Messe Berlin between 7 and 9 July: «It’s clear to me that Karl-Heinz Müller’s B2B show failed. In 2016 it will be-come a B2C event, tailored to the wishes of Zalando. Panorama will remain a B2B plat-form and we’ll try to constantly improve it». For the frst time ever, Panorama Berlin will be pairing its clothing and accessories collec-tions for him and her with an area dedicated to lifestyle, nova concept, showcasing beau-ty and wellness lines, objects for the home, gifts and much more. There is also a new section being introduced by show&order at Kraftwerk in Berlin’s Mitte district between 7 and 9 July: it’s called so.. by show&order, a selection of fashion, jewellery and lifestyle products curated by sophie Guyot. ●

The digital debate among Italian fashion players is often oriented towards the e-com-merce platform of choice. As a veteran of the industry, what is your advice? It is a typical mistake in early stages of the mar-ket to focus one’s attention on issues of technol-ogy before strategic objectives are established. The right approach, I believe, follows the op-posite path. Only after revenue potential and sales targets have been identifed is it possible to evaluate technical necessities. A key topic for global fashion brands, for instance, is in which markets to start with a serious e-commerce presence. Within Teradata we have set up a
consulting unit pursuing exactly this aim, to help clients avoid typical pitfalls.
What distinguishes Teradata from competitors who offer similar services, especially with re-gards to a young e-commerce market like Italy? It is normal that in a moment of great growth entrepreneurs enter the stage and offer email ser-vices, maybe by leasing a server and hiring a com-puter expert. In the very short term these players can offer some value. However, problems arise when their clients face international competi-tors who base their efforts on advanced practices. Teradata is not the only player in this feld. We do however offer a range of important value added services that together make a unique difference.

What are key elements of this digital value chain? The capacity of analysing big numbers of data, together with the ability to per-sonalize messages on all channels, from email to social networks, creates signif-cant advantages. By being able to segment interactions you do not only increase will-ingness to buy, you can also protect your brand from counterproductive exposure. On top of this, we just acquired a new technology with which we can personalize push notifcations from mobile apps, open-ing up new horizons for our clients. ●

l’homme
There are no musts or codes to follow. Only one rule applies: carpe diem. Seize the moment, using the wealth of your heritage but setting yourself apart from tradition. Defy convention and delve into anarchy to fnd your own personal whole. The latest Milan collections were dominated by a new generation of designers, who are rewriting the grammar of fashion in a deliberately ungrammatical way. The boundaries between masculine and feminine are becoming less pronounced. Formalwear is looking more and more like utility wear and technology teams up with tailoring. The new man is open, cosmopolitan, permanently on but always relaxed. He has no aesthetic standards to satisfy. His only aim is to express himself.

FORMAL CITY
Suit fanatics refuse to sacrifce a single ounce of their charm. It’s simply not true that dressing in a classical way levels a man’s personality. On the contrary, a suit – jacket, trousers, shirt and tie – highlights a man’s best characteristics, often emphasising them. And you can always play around with the rules and style conventions: you just need tact, precision and elegance. Classical isn’t just one concept, it’s a collection of styles impossible to resist.

A hommage to white will illuminate the elegant soirées of the coming season. The time has come for the ultimate non-colour, which adorns man’s suit from head to toe, invoking the famous “cellar door” expression depicted in Richard Kelly’s film Donnie Darko, alluding to an opening towards a new perception of how to dress. Yet it strays away from the stiff elegance of yesteryear, which saw white as a symbol of power and self control.

Msgm docet.
The sTrengTh of MassiMo giorgeTTi«Things don’t happen by themselves: you have to make them happen. My Romagna ro-ots have equipped me with great energy and a fair bit of chutzpah», declared Massimo giorgetti as he dived into his new adventure at Pucci, where he has been named creative director in place of Peter Dundas. Giorgetti will be sticking to the self-ordained rules he’s lived by thus far: to always work with “joyous effort” and, when it comes to designing new collections, to dabble with fuorescent colours and surprising prints. Both tricks worked to great effect in his successful stewardship of his Msgm brand (d35m turnover and 700 clients worldwide). According to those close to him, Giorgetti works tirelessly in his he-adquarters in Milan’s via Adige, grafting 10-12 hours a day to oversee a career that will only get busier thanks to his new role at the Florentine fashion house. That said, judging from his instagram profle - which has 78.7k followers - he is sure to make time for going clubbing, concerts, days spent at the seaside and walks with Pane, his Jack Russell who he’s even dedicated a T-shirt to. Meeting him is a pleasure. Born in 1977 in Longiano, a small town in the province of Forlì-Cesena, he began building his fashion dream in his aunt’s tailoring workshop. Af-ter qualifying as an accountant at the age of 20, he started working as a salesperson at nick & sons, the historic boutique in Mi-lano Marittima, before earning invaluable experience in international stores. Giorgetti’s career as a designer proper began in 2004, with the turning point coming in 2008 when he struck out on his own, creating the Msgm brand in partnership with the Pao-loni group. «Having experience in several sectors helps you to understand the whole production chain of a collection», explains Giorgetti. Unveiling the Pilota collection at Pitti Uomo, he spelt out the direction of his tenure at Pucci, leaving the fashion house’s heritage to one side in favour of a desirable product. Msgm docet. ●

Il Principe raddoppia il suo impegno sul fashionEmanuele Filiberto di Savoia aims at transforming its Prince Tees brand in a total look collection.
«Siamo tornati all'essenziale. E prosegue: «Oggi la collezione è distribuita in otto Paesi: Italia, Francia, Spagna, Germania, Inghilterra, Svizzera, Montecarlo e Giappone come new entry.

Come è

Q&A
celebrità a livello mondiale. Come hai
Sentendoti parlare in inglese, potresti
sembrare americano. Hai vissuto a
lungo negli Stati Uniti?
come hai fatto?
