    FLC In Action

The Transition Task Force has been hard at work in the past months and will belooking for your input in the coming months. The purpose of the group is to marecommendations and proposals to the Executive Committee and the Church

    Council for:

    1. Prioritizing FLCs needs and goals within the context of effectively continuing and expanding our ministry in accordance with the congregations missstatement.

    2. Effectively utilizing church volunteers and staff to meet the needs of FLCsmission and carry out the goals.

    3. Identifying and prioritizing needs for an overall staffing design capable ofboth leading and equipping other to lead in FLCs ministry.

Kris Akin is leading the group as the Chair and Brian Wenck is serving as ViceChair. Other members include Katja Andresen, Dave Baumbach, Marilyn Briescher, Darrin Ceason, Cindy Adams Ellis, Karen Hulscher, Alleen Wicktor, andRoger Wood. Sara Otterness is also assisting in her role as Council President anPastor Phil Walen continues to offer his guidance and insight to help move FLCmove forward in the transition.

In the fall, the members of the Transition Task Force had the opportunity to attetraining and read Temporary Shepherds as we prepared for the work ahead. Wehave learned about the timeline for a search process, revisited our rich history atFLC, and learned more about each other and our working styles. We have alsolearned about some of our demographics and what it means to be a growing

    church of our size.

Each of the members has been assigned to one of three working groups. Thegroups include the self-study team which is focused on looking at the body of oucongregation and the various organizational structures. The staff needs team wistudy and review our existing and future needs for both staff and key volunteers

The mission/vision team will help us better understand, embrace, and modify ifnecessary the existing Vision for Mission.

In the coming months, we will help with a history celebration and begin to gatheinformation from our staff and members in various ways. These include bothwritten surveys, individual meetings, and some group meetings. Please take timto meet our Transition Task Force members and accept their invitation to help aneeded. They will begin to wear name tags at church services and events so youcan more easily find them if you havent already met! Your prayers as this imptant work moves forward are also appreciated.

    4/12

I have some handwritten notes that I have saved now for 12 years.

I know it is 12 years, because the notes are dated March of 99,but I have no memory of where I gathered the information. I amassuming it was a conference or some continuing education event, but I cant be sure.

I saved the notes, though, because I thought these seven pointshad some real value as an assessment tool for looking at congre-gational life, checking up on how things are going, and focusingin on those things we need in order to best move into the future.

I have been with you almost a year and a half now in this interimperiod (wow, how time flies), and by this time next year weshould be closing in on the excitement of new pastoral leadership,

so I want to invite you to join me in looking through these oldnotes of mine as we seek Gods guidance into this important yearahead. My notes are in bold letters; my comments then follow, but see what you think

Have a clear sense of mission! If you were asked to statethe mission of FLC, how would you respond? We know thatGods love through Jesus is at the center, but what else would yousay? This is a critical piece for a vital congregation, and in themonths ahead, the Transition Task Force will with your inputand help be seeking to understand and better define our missionand our future vision.

Recognize worship as the center of congregational life. Ithank God for our rich worship life here at FLC. Worship is notonly an important time of renewal, but it is a picture window tohow we are called to live in daily life. It is my prayer that thepeople of FLC will continue to make worship a priority, notwanting to miss a single opportunity to gather together.

Develop and maintain a strong sense of hospitality. Dopeople visiting our faith community feel welcome? Every churchlikes to think they are friendly, but too often churches are friendlyonly among their own. Thanks be to God for the spirit of hospi-tality I see being extended at FLC, but can we be better? Can webe even more intentional? Whachathink?

Always seek to connect the faith experience to daily life.

What a confusing and complex world we live in! Where do weturn for stability and understanding? I hope and pray you havefound solid touch points in this community that go beyond wor-ship great relationships, learning and growing, service opportu-nities but we still have work to do to embrace and encourageone another.

Identify and lift up leaders across the generations. Doyou know how blessed we are at FLC? Unlike so many churchesthat are just growing old together, we have the oldest to the

youngest among us (actually, lots of the

youngest), and every generation bringsan abundance of different skills and ex-perience and ideas and energy to bear. Ithank God for both the challenge and thejoy of ministry in such a rich setting.

Develop an idea-friendly structure. Churches are verygood at doing things in certain ways simply because it has alwaysbeen done that way. However, as a community of faith zeroes inon its essential mission, constant assessment of ministry is neces-sary. A vital church is open to sharing new ideas, taking steps offaith, embracing change that enhances ministry.

Finally, think Lutheran. As Lutherans, we have a mar-

velous theology for life together in community and life in theworld. We come from a tradition (Luther and the reformers) ofcourageous believers, both grounded in scripture and led by theSpirit. Confident in Christs presence, we can live in the challeng-ing and ever-changing world around us with hope and expecta-tion.

So what are your thoughts about my old notes for a new future?

    From the Pastor

    Church Council Notes

At the January 11 meeting of the Church Council, Pastor Philreported that 1550 people worshipped over the Christmasweekend, with the 3:30pm Christmas Eve service being thebest attended (overflow crowd of 525).

Pastor Phil made a presentation about a Military Biblesticks program in which FLC could participate to provideminiature audio Bibles ($25 ea) to members of the military

who are being deployed in this coming year. The Councildesignated a Sunday in February to promote this effort.

The December finance report recorded very strong giving, inpart due to good response to the Christmas Blessing oppor-tunity for end-of-year gifts. December income exceededexpenses by $17,000, which resulted in a much strengthenedend-of-year cash position (think checkbook balance) of$42,000. However, this balance going into 2011 is substan-tially less than the $70,000 with which we began 2010.
