It was later part of the Marquisate of Tuscany, as a free city under the favour of Countess Matilde of Canossa, whose privileges were to be confirmed under the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa I. In the 13th century, Barga fell under the influence of Lucca. Following the death of Castruccio Castracani, Barga voluntary placed itself under the rule of the Florentine Republic, obtaining exemptions from numerous duties and taxes. In 1400, after being besieged by Piccinino, a military adventurer at the services of the Visconti family of Milano, Barga, which repelled the attack with the aid of Francesco Sforza, went on to enjoy a lengthy period of peace that lasted until the Napoleonic occupation.
