Introduction
The Farmers’ Diary is an initiative to help farmers maintain correct and regular records of different activities of an enterprise and its related costs. It would ascertain the true costs of each farming enterprise and help in informed decision-making and improving farm business profitability.
The FAO’s Technical Assistance to Food Security and Agricultural Productivity Project (TA FSAPP) designed this Diary after going through the one prepared earlier by CARLEP in the Eastern Region of the country. It was also presented to the all the Dzongkhag Agriculture Officers and Commodity Coordinator of the Department of Agriculture (DoA) during their Consultative meeting on the 30th of August 2019. During the presentation, the meeting suggested that FSAPP look at Farmers’ Diary prepared for Bhutan Organic Certification System (BOCS) and the Book Keeping prepared by the Department of Agriculture Marketing and Cooperatives (DAMC).
The Diary for BOCS, as the name suggests, is for organic certification for all products that a farm would produce. It does not help in maintaining records at individual commodity level while the Book Keeping prepared by DAMC is a Financial Management Module.
The Farmers’ Diary of FSAPP is simple and can be used for any annual crop, be it vegetablesor cereals. It is divided into six sections. The first is the record for inputs used in the production of a crop. Inputs would include, but not limited to, seeds and seedlings, fertilisers, farmyard manure, pesticides, weedicides, crates, bags etc. The quantity of each input with its corresponding unit and price must be recorded. The second section is to record the labour days, draught power days, machine days or hours by activities and its corresponding wage rate or prices. The third section is to record the production figures. Unlike cereals, some crops, especially vegetables may not be harvested at once and the production figure from each harvest of a crop will have to be recorded. The fourth section is regarding the expenses incurred for marketing such as transport and labour costs. The fifth section is about the quantity sold at different times and the prices obtained while the last section portrays the net income earned from an enterprise.
Besides helping the farmers in maintaining proper records of costs and benefits, it would also help extension officials in developing cropping calendar and working out the production economics without having to carry out any survey.
