It is the most important me because it is the only me when we have any power.(Leo Tolstoy) Heads Message I would like to start this Forum off with congratulaons and thanks to all those involved in the Choral Concerts which took place at the end of last term. The performances were fantasc and it was truly inspiring to see the fruits of the hard work of the singers, musicians and technical support teams. An event like this can only be created through well-intenoned and well-managed collaboraon, and the staff responsible for this at all the parcipang schools deserve tremendous appreciaon of their engagement and efforts. The concerts are a shining light – an example of community coherence at its best. As you may remember, it is almost a year since we held our first consultaon for Farlingaye families in relaon to our exploraon of the possibility of becoming part of a Mul-Academy Trust. Since then, governors and senior staff at the school have been in discussion with several other local schools and the relevant authories about this project. It has been a complicated process, and progress has been cauous as governors and staff seek to create the best situaon for our students, present and future. There will be a Governing Body meeng in early May, at which decisions will be made about how to move the process forward towards a conclusion. More informaon to parents/carers about this maer will follow soon. For some of our families this Easter will be seem to be a paradox: a holiday period during which a lot of school work is being done. Certainly, it is always a challenging me of year for our students in Years 11-13, but we know that the focused work they do can lead to great rewards in August and beyond: geng processes right now equals open doors in the future. We would encourage all our exam class students to seize their opportunity for success by geng down to work – including during these next two weeks. Farlingaye HIGH SCHOOL “Remember then: there is only one time that is important-- Now! It is the most important time because it is the only time when we have any power.” (Leo Tolstoy)

Head’s Message I would like to start this Forum off with congratulations and thanks to all those involved in the Choral Concerts which took place at the end of last term. The performances were fantastic and it was truly inspiring to see the fruits of the hard work of the singers, musicians and technical support teams. An event like this can only be created through well-intentioned and well-managed collaboration, and the staff responsible for this at all the participating schools deserve tremendous appreciation of their engagement and efforts. The concerts are a shining light – an example of community coherence at its best. As you may remember, it is almost a year since we held our first consultation for Farlingaye families in relation to our exploration of the possibility of becoming part of a Multi-Academy Trust. Since then, governors and senior staff at the school have been in discussion with several other local schools and the relevant authorities about this project. It has been a complicated process, and progress has been cautious as governors and staff seek to create the best situation for our students, present and future. There will be a Governing Body meeting in early May, at which decisions will be made about how to move the process forward towards a conclusion. More information to parents/carers about this matter will follow soon. For some of our families this Easter will be seem to be a paradox: a holiday period during which a lot of school work is being done. Marjoke Henrichs Art Photography Workshop As part of our visiting artist scheme, we welcomed Marjoke Henrichs to our Art Department this month to work with our A level Photography students. Marjoke is an illustrator and artist who has experience in Art, Textiles and Theatre Design. Students enjoyed working with Marjoke’s concepts relating to transforming their photographs using experimental paint techniques. They explored distorting and extending their photographic imagery to create beautiful abstracted outcomes. The resulting work will support the student’s exam portfolios. Our 2018 visiting artists programme has been generously supported by “The Arts Society Woodbridge”

Sainsbury Centre for the Arts GCSE Trip Our Year 11 Art students enjoyed an enlightening visit to the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich as part of their exam unit. Students explored the “Radical Russia” exhibition, including works by Kandinsky, Tatlin and El Lissitzky. Students also viewed works by “Fabergé” and a range of artefacts from royal households. During the day they worked with an artist in residence to create experimental pieces using collage and photomontage exploring use of space, shape and the human figure. Students created temporary “human” sculptures and 3D models to create artwork linked to their exam title.

School Experience Morning When parents were asked if they wanted to ‘go back to school for the day?’ 30 parents said ‘Yes please!’ They arrived punctually for a quick cup of tea on Monday March 19th, had registration in the Library with Dr Sievewright and were presented with individual timetables for their morning activities. After Registration, it was straight into Assembly – a grown up Sixth Form one for our Year 12 students. The topic for this was preparing for exams, having just had mock-exam results, and showing resilience and overcoming challenges. Once assembly had finished and it was time for lessons, the parent/carer visitors were introduced to their own Year 8 guides. The Year 8 students were fantastic and extremely helpful. They had the responsibility of taking their visitors to all of their lessons and then returning to their own lessons! They collected their visitors at break and took them to the New Hall where tea, coffee and biscuits were provided amongst lots of excited chatter about lessons and the shock of those who had attended a Year 13 Maths A Level lesson! Some parents had even enjoyed a PE lesson in the Fitness Studio. All the adults were in agreement that the school felt a ‘happy’ environment in which to study, and they all enjoyed the variety of lessons to which they attended, ranging from A Level English to Year 7 Science, Resistant Materials and Art, to German and Psychology. After break the visitors enjoyed one more lesson and then they returned to the New Hall for a ‘speed dating’ information session with 25 students, who took it in turns to quickly meet small groups of parents to discuss the variety of activities available to students within school. These varied from Book Mastermind, to school productions and music within school, horse-riding with the Farlingaye Flyers, school sports and school trips, various school councils, languages, student investment and enterprise, and young carers. The morning finished just before 1pm and the parents were dismissed. They had all hopefully had an enjoyable morning and said they would recommend the ‘school experience’ to others. Comments were: ‘I would just like to say a big thank you to the school for such a great experience this morning. The children in the three classes I attended were well behaved and engaged in the lesson. All three teachers were very encouraging and brilliant at keeping the class attention.’ ‘The student who showed me around was very polite and helpful, and the children involved in the ‘speed

dating’ session were incredibly informative and great to talk to’.

‘I just wanted to say thank you for a very interesting and enjoyable school experience on Monday. The Year 13 Maths class was a mystifying experience for me, it has to be said… but still good to see! (Maths was never my strong subject). However, I would have been happy to stay longer in the Art and History lessons – school is definitely better when you’re older! In any case, it was extremely well organised and I was impressed with the teaching and learning that we saw, plus the students in the ‘speed dating’ info session were very brave to face all those parents, well done to them too’. ‘A very big thank you to you and your colleagues for such an interesting and well-organised Monday morning. It was so helpful as a parent to see how the classes change as the students progress through the school – and to see the wide range of opportunities presented by those so passionately involved in the speed dating session. And a big thank you to Harvey Ford who was a charming, polite, confident and welcoming school guide. I will certainly recommend the event to other parents and thank you all once again’.

Mrs Ling, Headteacher’s Secretary

Rotary Chef District Final On Saturday February 3rd, the district Rotary Chef finals were held at the College of West Anglia, Kings Lynn. Ellie Smy having won the local finals held at the school went on to win the District Final. She was up against finalists from Kings Lynn to Cambridge, the competition was stiff and the atmosphere tense. The judges were pleased with her result and were impressed with the way she made fresh pasta and the presentation of her dishes. Ellie had to prepare, cook and serve a 3-course meal for two people based on healthy eating within 2½ hours. She had a maximum budget of £15 and was marked on her choice of dishes, planning, costing, skills, hygiene, time management, taste and presentation of each dish. Ellie will represent our School and District in the regional final at Redbridge College, Barley Lane, Romford, Essex. Ellie’s menu: Smoked Salmon Scotch egg served with a leafy salad and dill mayonnaise Chicken wrapped in Parma ham stuffed with mozzarella served on a bed of fresh linguine and tomato sauce Vanilla Panna Cotta served with a shortbread biscuit and raspberry compote

Big Lego Build Ipswich Art Gallery – 14th March As part of the British Science week, Ipswich Art Gallery hosted the Big Lego Build of Ipswich. This involved many schools contributing to the creation of Ipswich modelled in Lego on the gallery floor. Year 7 and 8 students had to look at photographs of buildings and then interpret them in Lego and creativity was encouraged! As part of the day students learnt about the heritage of Ipswich including going back to the Stone Age inhabitants, Romans and up to the current day. Mr B Hawtin – Endeavour Co-ordinator

KS3 & KS5 BT Innovation Labs Trip – 12th March As part of the British Science week, BT opened up their innovation labs for an exhibition of cutting edge technology likely to be used in the near future. Students were immersed in STEM throughout the day with a walk through simulated areas with industry experts presenting the exciting and ground breaking technology. This varied from surgeries, shops, manufacturing plants to banks. Following this students had the chance to walk around the exhibition hall where they participated in various challenges designed to inspire students in STEM careers and learning. Mr B Hawtin – Assistant Head of Technology

Year 7 TeenTech City of Tomorrow Showcase After months of investigation, dedication and collaboration, Year 7 Endeavour students had the chance to showcase their projects for the national TeenTech City of Tomorrow challenge in March. Throughout the scheme students have met regularly to learn about the materials, technology and styles of residential homes of the future. This led to unique designs which were then realised on two build days. Models had to be on a footprint of A4 and made using recycled materials or materials up to a £10 cost. Creativity was at a premium and the students rose to the challenge. Judges were hard pushed to reach a decision as to which two groups would represent the school at the national final at the Emirates Stadium in May. In the end a decision had to be made and team 1: Madeleine Brown, Lucia Shave, Sophia Stoney and Isla Turner and team 7: Melissa Coffey, Jean-Baptiste Bonniot, Sam Garratt and Madeleine Rea were selected. A huge well done to all involved. Mr B Hawtin – Endeavour Co-ordinator

Book Mastermind Area Finals. On Monday 12th March, Saul Clark took part in the Book Mastermind Area Final held at Ipswich Academy. Saul competed against several schools from the County, such as Copleston High School, Ipswich High School, Westbourne Academy, Chantry Academy, Ipswich Academy and St Joseph’s College. Saul was challenged with two rounds; during the first round Saul was asked 20 questions on his chosen book “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins. The second round consisted of 20 general knowledge questions. The winner of both rounds was a student from St Joseph’s College, Ipswich. Well done Saul for taking part in the competition and we will be attending the County finals Friday May 4th at Stratford St Andrew Riverside Centre. Mrs Mason

The Discovery Club Bowling Tournament 2018 A group of six students from Learning Support took part in the Ipswich and South Suffolk School Games on Friday March 16th at Martlesham Tenpin. Bayley Walker (8E) went first and scored 99 points in total. Matty Capell (9E) scored the highest score in the tournament with 118 points in total and won a Pin trophy. There were two games, the first was the tournament and the second was a fun game. It was fun but kind of stressful because only a few people got strikes. The Farlingaye team came second overall out of 11 teams and all got silver certificates. Thanks to Mr Johnson for organising the event and Mrs Wright for driving the minibus. And big thanks to Mr Hall and Mrs Moore for letting us all go along! Bayley Walker

Bar Mock Trials On Saturday March 17th, the Farlingaye mock trial team competed in the Suffolk heat of the 2018 mock trial competition at the Magistrates Court in Ipswich. The team consisted of lawyers, prosecution and defence, magistrates, and all other roles required to construct a working court of law. We competed against three other schools; Holbrook, East Point Academy and Chantry. Each of the schools showed a good understanding of the case and the Farlingaye students competing made their points come across very well. We took part in two cases, one for defence and one for prosecution, allowing us to present our skills for both different areas of law. In both of the cases that we took part in, the defendant was found not guilty. This decision was made by the magistrates from the competing teams, with the assistance of professional magistrates. Meanwhile, other professional magistrates were watching and were awarding points for each school based on how well each person played their part. As the competition came to a close and all of the cases had been awarded points, it was time for the magistrates and judges running the competition to go and tally up all of the marks and make their final verdict on who the winner would be. The Farlingaye team waited nervously on the edge of their seats, waiting to be called back into the court room to find out who had won, and loud cheers erupted when the magistrate announced that the winner of the first heat was Farlingaye High School. Taking part in this competition has been a great opportunity for us to be able to develop our understanding of how a court works. The team all agreed that it has been a fantastic experience and that we are much more knowledgeable about the law. Round two, here we come! Molly Lord and Will Boast (Court Reporters for the Mock Trial Team)

FHSF Quiz Night The annual FHSF Quiz Night was another roaring success. With over 200 entrants in teams of up to eight people buzzing in the Dining Hall, Mr Piddington, ably assisted by Mr Moran, unveiled this year’s quiz. In parts it was quite tricky, but thoroughly enjoyed by all. A lot of thinking was required, which necessitated copious amounts of drinks and food. Luckily, the FHSF ran a well stocked bar and the ploughman’s dinner provided was delicious. All the waste from the evening was carefully recycled reducing our carbon footprint. The winning team with 126 points was the Magnificent Seven (again) made up of some of Farlingaye’s teaching staff. The winning student team was the Danny Devito Appreciation Society with a superb 71 points. The night was a fantastic fundraiser for the FHSF, with profits, including proceeds from the raffle, of £1,620.66. Well done to everyone who organised it and to everyone who took part.

Malfi Trip On Friday March 16th, 36 English Literature Sixth Form students went to Stratford-upon-Avon for the evening to watch the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of “The Duchess of Malfi”. A play studied at A Level, “The Duchess of Malfi” is a violent revenge tragedy which revolves around the Duchess and her corrupt brothers who both seek to destroy her. The play began unexpectedly, with the Duchess dragging a beheaded (stuffed) bull onto the stage which was left to hang suspended there for the entirety of the show. In the second half, Ferdinand, one of the Duchess’ brothers, slit the belly of this beast, and for the remainder of the show blood seeped from the wound. The audience and our sixth formers watched on, aghast yet captivated, as the blood crept towards the perimeters of the stage, proving to be a poignant representation of the destruction and suffering of this toxic society. The students really enjoyed this production of the play and the opportunity to go to the home of Shakespeare and the Swan Theatre. Watching a recreation of Webster’s 17th century revenge tragedy in a modern setting provided opportunity for debate and discussion, which continued on the long coach ride home! The English Literature team would like to thank those Sixth Formers who attended. We had a fantastic evening in your company. “A gory and haunting interpretation which has provided us all with a unique and alternative take on the text,” Sadie Montague.
