Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - we hope you enjoy your time in this fantastic region.

As always, there's plenty of choices if you're looking for things to do. Who said nothing much happens in the country?!

Once again, cultural events dominate the list of what's on this month.

It all kicks off on Saturday the 1st, with two exhibitions opening at the Eden Killer Whale Museum - Blue Whales on the Brink and Men of Timber (details on pages 6 & 7).

There's a Car Boot Sale at the Nethercote Hall from 8am til 12pm (page 9) and a fashion parade presented by Aquablu Resort Wear in Merimbula Plaza, Merimbula at 11am (see page 12).

Cathcart is holding its 12th Annual Horse Trail Ride, complete with a dinner and dance at the Cathcart Hall (page 17), or if you're in Batemans Bay,

you can try African drumming (page 37 for details). That's certainly a lot to do on one day!

If you're a fan of aeroplanes old and new, the Moruya Aero Club is holding an Open Day on Sunday 9th at the Moruya Aerodrome (details on p 31).

Also in Moruya is the fantastic River of Art Festival, held from 21st - 30th May and featuring many talented locals (also on p 31).

Keep your Imag handy as you travel around the region or check out our website at www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

Do drive carefully, especially at night - there's lots of wildlife around.

Enjoy!

VISITOR INFORMATION CENTREMitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

...will take you there!

www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au

George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another

century.

You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

Historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay.- the Seahorse Inn here has been beautifully restored.

Blue Whales on the Brink at the Eden Killer Whale MuseumBlue Whales are the largest animals on our planet. They can weigh about the same as 40 elephants and are as long as around three school buses. Their heart alone is around the size of a small car. Due to their low numbers and the size of the ocean, mysteries remain of the nature of this swift and powerful creature.Blue Whales are considered Endangered, meaning there is a very high risk of their extinction in the wild. Prior to the invention of the exploding harpoon gun and steam-driven vessels, Blue Whale numbers in Antarctica were over 230,000. Their swiftness and power were too great for the oared whaleboats. Technological

changes in whaling tools and vessels soon changed this, and recent surveys estimate the population now around only 2,000 in Antarctica.Blue Whales on the Brink explores the technological advances in whaling that resulted in the dramatic decline of the Blue’s populations around the world, and the international recognition in 1966 of the need of conservation of whale species.Blue Whales featured in Eden’s history in 1908 when a mother and calf were cornered and herded by Killer Whales into the Bay and finally harpooned by Archer James Davidson near Davidson Whaling Station. The mother was the largest whale to be harpooned

by hand at the time, measuring 97 feet long (29.5 metres). This made the Guinness Book of World Records in 1984. A detailed account of the hunt featured in a Sydney newspaper and is both an intriguing and disturbing account to read. Though an uncommon sight, Blue Whales have been seen returning to the Bay on occasion.Blue Whales on the Brink features stunning documentary footage of Blue Whale populations off the South and West Australian coasts. Explore what we do and don’t know about Blue Whales, reflect on historical and contemporary human activity affecting populations and the role we can play in the conservation of these majestic creatures. The exhibition runs from 1 May to 10 October 2010.Left: Archer James Davidson standing on top of 97ft Blue Whale harpooned in 1908. Technological changes meant an increase in the number of whales that could be hunted and processed.

Men of Timber Exhibition explores Eden's timber history The Men of Timber exhibition explores the dangerous aspects of occupations associated with the timber industry as well as the historical aspects of living and working conditions. The exhibition also highlights the commitment of the National Timber Workers’ Memorial committee to bring to Eden a place of national commemoration for fallen Australian timber workers. The timber industry in Australia extends as far back as to the settlement of the colony in 1788. Timber was cleared from the land to fulfil the need to build shelter and furniture, provide fuel for cooking and for transport requirements such as building ships and carts. Red cedar was the first export of the colony of New South Wales and cedar

getters existed until the end of the industry in 1910.One of the earliest known exports of timber from Eden occurred in 1843 when the ship St Heliers left the wharf with a load of wattle bark and other goods bound for London. The first rail service in NSW opened on 26 September 1855. With the increasing use of railways across the country the demand for railway sleepers saw the emergence of a steady sleeper cutter industry. By 1907 there were 50 sleeper cutters producing sleepers made of Woollybutt, Blackbutt and Grey box.

The last sleeper shipment from Eden was the Lantao which departed on 28 October 1961 bound for Pakistan.Eden was the first Australian town to begin exporting woodchips. This began in 1968 when the state government entered into a 20 year agreement with Harris Daishowa (Aust) Pty Ltd for the sale of woodchips from the Crown’s forests. By 1969 the chipping plant built on the shore across the bay from the town of Eden was operational. The first woodchip shipment took place in January 1971.Men of Timber exhibition runs from 1st May to 6th February 2011

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.

European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s

meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.

Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century.

However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course.

Just 5 minutes east of the village is

Award winning Broadwater OystersOysters, like wine & cheese, have a distinct flavour, depending on where they are grown. Pambula Lake oysters have a smooth, subtle flavour influenced by the water they are produced in.The clean, clear waters of the lake are a combination of fresh water moving down the Pambula and Yowaka rivers, and tidal exchange from the Pacific Ocean - perfect for the production of the finest Sydney Rock Oysters.Broadwater Oysters, on Pambula Lake, won a Gold Medal at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards in August 2009 for their locally grown oysters, following up on Silver Medals won in 2008.

With new signage making it easier to discover them (see photo right), you can visit Broadwater Oysters located on the Pambula Lake foreshore.Talk to farmers about oyster production and watch oysters being freshly opened – for local restaurants and the public to enjoy. Between Pambula and Eden, turn off the Princes Highway onto Landing Road and head down to he foreshore.Broadwater Oysters offer fresh award winning oysters to eat ‘natural’ by the lake, or to take home to enjoy at your leisure. Panboola - a great natural asset for PambulaVisitors to Pambula may have noticed a change in the land at the bottom of the town over the last few years. This floodplain has a wealth of history. For thousands of years it was frequented by Aborigines of the Thaua clan of the Yuin nation. Its first white settlers arrived in 1835. Since then these fertile river flats have provided valuable farming land for dairying and grain production. It was here the original township of Pambula was devastated by flood. Syms Covington, Charles Darwin’s assistant, owned cultivation blocks on the flats. Chinese market gardeners grew vegetables for gold miners, and for one hundred years

keen racegoers attended meetings of the Imlay Racing Club on the now abandoned racecourse. The project known as Panboola (in recognition of the Aboriginal presence

on the land for many thousands of years) offers many recreational options,

including bird-watching, picnicking, cycling, walking or just sitting and enjoying the view. Picnic tables and seats have been installed in Tips Billabong and the Waterbird Sanctuary making outdoor lunches easy, or just bring a picnic blanket. Shade, shelter and seating are also available in the re-vamped Kiosk, located beside the former race course in the south east section.Panboola has also become a favourite spot with locals for walking their dogs, but please note that dogs must be kept on a leash, and are restricted to roads; they are not permitted to enter through any gates. In an exciting new phase of revegatation, planted corridors have been established (and protected by

fencing) to link existing plantings at the front (north) of the site to the Pambula River in the south. The main entrance to Panboola is off Bullara St, next to Robert Smith’s. Just down from the entrance over the arched bridge is an information booth that has brochures providing information about Panboola.Panboola is a wonderful place to experience nature, history and culture, and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early history.

With its beautiful location on the shores of Merimbula Lake, there are plenty of places to enjoy the view; looking across the bay from the restored Merimbula Wharf, enjoying the sunrise or sunset from the Boardwalk around the southern section of the Lake, or strolling around Fishpen watching the pelicans.

There are a range of activities and attractions in Merimbula, including deep-sea fishing, whale-watching, snorkelling, surfing, cycling, scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There

In May 2010, Margaret Venables and Cathy Foster from Aquablu Resort Wear are celebrating their second anniversary as owners of this stylish boutique. In honour of this milestone, they've organised a free fashion parade to be held on Saturday 1st May at 11am in the Merimbula Plaza courtyard, and all are welcome. The parade is a great opportunity to check out the latest winter fashions, as models will be wearing selected items from Aquablu's new winter range. There will also be lots of give-aways during the parade.

Aquablu has been operating in Merimbula for 11 years, and Margaret and Cathy have built on its reputation for stocking labels you wouldn't expect to see outside the big cities. And the friendly, relaxed atmosphere at Aquablu means you can purchase the latest fashions and enjoy your shopping experience.Aquablu is the exclusive stockist of NYDJ Jeans from the USA. Also known as 'tummy tuck' jeans, they are designed to make you look slimmer, but allow you to be comfortable at the same time.Followers of the sun planning an

escape north will be pleased to know that Aquablu carries a range of Irene Berzelli Australia and Togs Australia swimwear all year round. Created for women in sizes 10 to 18, there are many flattering designs and colours to choose from.If casual day wear is what you're looking for, you'll find both Marco Polo and Didier Parakianl in a range of great fabrics and styles. For something a little fancier, there's day wear and dresses from VSSP, Dusk, Citi and Hot.iAquablu's winter trading hours are Monday to Saturday 9am - 5 pm and Sundays 10am - 4pm.

12th Annual Trail Ride helps Cathcart's School of ArtsThe Cathcart Trail Ride combines the great country traditions of horse-riding in the bush with a great night out in a country hall. The riding starts at 7.30am on Saturday May 1st, with the horses departing from the Cathcart Hall in the heart of the small village of Cathcart, located 20 minutes south-east of Bombala. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting some $50m of product every year. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a

must for anyone new to the region; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s.

The Heritage Centre is also home to

the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides a wealth of information about attractions throughout the region.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas.

Every January, the Tathra Wharf to Waves Beach Swim is held to raise funds for various community groups.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters,

and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

If you’re keen to play some golf or tennis, try the Tathra Beach Country Club.

Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

Tathra is a great base from which you can explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, which follows the coast up towards Bermagui. Beaches include Nelsons, Moon Bay, and Bithry Inlet, with camping available at Gillards and Middle Beach.

Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go.

Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkelling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River.

Try out the 18-hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls. Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests.

Take a guided tour of the Montreal Goldfield and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s.

Drive south to taste local wines and enjoy a meal at the Mimosa Drystone Restaurant.

There is a range of accommodation in Bermagui including B&Bs, motels,

tourist/caravan parks, self-contained holiday units and houses and camping.

The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel offers fine food, beverages and accommodation in truly spectacular location overlooking Horseshoe Bay.

Bermagui is undergoing something of a building boom, with the new $3.5m Fisherman's Co-op opening in December 2009. This magnificent building, designed by architect Phillip Cox, features timber in its construction including white stringybark poles that were harvested locally.

After receiving almost $1m in funding from the Federal Government, it is hoped that the club rooms of the Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club at Horseshoe Bay will be completed by mid-2010.

Bermagui is a fantastic place to base yourself when on holiday. After you've finished exploring all the things to do around town, it's only a short drive

to Foxglove Gardens at Tilba Tilba, and the historic village Central Tilba. Cobargo, the village famous for its working craftspeople, is only a 15 minute drive away.

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of a working village of local artisans, with many of buildings over 100 years old, reflecting the charm of the art & craft housed within them.

The two storey building that is home to “Bangles Gallery” is a fine example of century-old architecture, and features lovely wrought iron lace work around the verandahs..

Take a stroll around the town and experience the delightful ambience of yesteryear. Take your pick from an array of art and craft, rare gems and jewelry, pottery, woodwork & leatherwork, or hunt among the collectables, curios and old wares on offer.

Recharge your batteries at Valley Edge Cafe with great coffee and a fresh, delectable menu. Take a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful photography that adorns the walls - there are some

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains.

The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries.

In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town.

A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

N u r s e r i e s & G a rd e n s

In my nursery at Tilba Tilba I take great delight in watching birds making themselves at home amongst the plants as they search for nectar or the seed left over from the last season's flowering.

You might ask how can you attract these beautiful creatures to your garden, which gives you hours of pleasure, watching them go about their daily ritual.

There are a number of “rules” to help you:

Water: Probably the most important requirement for birds, is water. Apart from nourishment, it provides them with somewhere to cool down in the summer heat and to bathe in.

A pond or birdbath is ideal and care should be taken to freshen the supply as often as you can. Placing them near shrubs or trees allows them protection from harm by preying cats and larger birds. Make sure they have a clear view of the surrounding area so as not to be surprised by unwelcome guests.

Food: Provide a variety of native trees and shrubs that become a suitable source of food.

Callistemon, Hakea, Melaleuca and Salvia for example provide nectar. Grasses provide seed.

You shouldn’t put out seed as they birds become too reliant on this and should you be away for several days, the birds that have relied on this form of feeding could go hungry.

Protection: Provision of small “prickly” plants in the garden provides a safe haven for a lot of the smaller birds. They can hide amongst the foliage should trouble appear, like larger

Attracting Birds To Your Gardenpredatory birds or the neighbourhood cat.

Plants like Hakea sericea, Berberis, Grevillea and the like are very suited to this purpose.

Call into your local nursery for more advice on plants that are suitable as bird attractants.

site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on

The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble Arch Deua National Park

The north-western section of Deua Na-tional Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 min-utes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon.

Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

These days, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Moruya has a thriving arts community, with exhibitions frequently held at the Mechanics Institute, as well as numerous festivals held throughout the year, including the River of Art

Moruya Aero Club Open Day takes flight over MoruyaMany people think aviation is a rich person's sport, but with the growing availability of ultralight and recreational aircraft, aviation has become an affordable and challenging hobby for all ages.To raise the awareness in the community of the Moruya Aero Club and its facilities, the Club is hosting an Open Day on Sunday May 9th. One of the highlights of the day is the arrival of the Snowy Hydro Southcare Helicopter Rescue, with the helicopter and crew at the airfield from 11.30am - 12.30pm (provided they don't have to dash off to an emergency).

The crew will be available to chat to the public and discuss the valuable contribution they make to our community.

Other fly-in visitors include vintage and antique air craft, and it is anticipated that a large number of ultralight aircraft

will fly in to Moruya. Visitors should note that fly-in aircraft may not be able to attend if the weather is unsuitable. There will be lots of displays from other community organisations including the Rural Fire Service, SES, vintage and veteran cars and motorcycles, antique tractors and standing engines.Admission for the day is $15 per family or $10 per person and a barbeque will operating all day. Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests

Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.

Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.

HEADLANDFISHING ADVENTURES

Merimbula - NSW

The best fishing boat in town offeringREEF, DEEP SEA & GAME FISHING

Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures, and provides guided fishing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. With over 20 years experience in the industry, Stuart really knows his fishing. Check out his website at www.ausfishing.com.au for more information, or call Stuart on 0400 062 504 or 02 6495 9902 to book a fishing experience you won’t forget.

May along the Far South Coast sees some sensational fishing available. Whether your fishing the rocks, beaches, estuaries or offshore, an array of species will be on offer using a variety of different techniques.Beaches: Fishing late afternoons on a flooding tide can pay huge dividends this month, with bream, salmon, mullet, tailor and mulloway all on the cards. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter and fish it accordingly for best results. Fresh squid, pilchards, blue bait and pipi are ideal baits but using live beach worms is certainly the best for bream especially. Both surf poppers and chromed lures will also work for salmon and tailor. Better beaches to try are Tura, Gillards, Camel, Tilba, Brou and Barlings.Rocks: The pelagic action will be in full swing with salmon, tailor, kingfish and bonito all available. Anglers throwing chromed sliced lures up to 60grams, whole pilchards rigged on ganged hooks and live bait will have a great time. Almost any deeper headland should produce but some of the better ledges are Tura Head, Tathra Wharf, Mystery Bay and the Golf course rocks at Narooma. Drummer, blackfish and bream will make the suds home and should also be readily available. Fresh cabbage and cunjevoi being the prime baits.Offshore: With the water hovering around the 19-20deg mark, yellow fin tuna and albacore will be patrolling the current lines. Depending on bait activity

will determine where the fish are, but trolling lures from the 40-fathom line to the shelf is a good starting point. Inshore snapper, kingfish, mowing, flathead and john dory should keep the bottom bouncing brigade happy. Almost all reefs will be holding fish with fresh squid, striped tuna fillets and pilchards being the best baits. There should be a few kingfish around with Montague Island and Kowari point just south of Eden with jigs, live bait and squid fished on lead lines all working at times.Estuaries: Most estuaries along the coast will continue to fish well for most species. Flathead, whiting, bream, tailor and mulloway will all be available with softplastics, live baiting and fresh baits the best way to tempt one. Concentrate

your efforts around tide changes with early mornings a great time to fish the estuary. Using burley in conjunction with fresh baits should see some tasty fillets in the pan. Better estuaries at present include Pambula Lake, Bermagui Inlet and Wagonga Inlet at Narooma.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century.

The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia; the bridge celebrated its 50th birthday in 2006.

Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.

Hire a boat, kayak or even a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper

reaches of the Clyde River.

There are a myriad of beaches to explore, views to enjoy and walks to take, no matter what the season.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.

Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance.

Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or head north across the bridge and experience Long, Pebbly and Depot Beach.

While there, take a walk in the Murramarang National Park.

The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.

Learn traditional West African Drumming in Batemans Bay Canberra's leading djembe teacher, Kate Gascoyne of Drum Effect, is returning to Batemans Bay to run African Drumming workshops on Saturday 1 May. Due to popular demand, Kate now brings her workshops to the Bay regularly, always attracting a number of people who are trying African drumming for the first time as well as catering for the enthusiasts who travel from up and down the coast to attend these high-energy workshops. An accomplished djembe player and exceptional teacher, Kate has studied and performed with master drummer

Mohamed Bangoura from Guinea, West Africa. She has also undertaken intensive drumming and dance study in Ghana under Ghanaian master

drummer, Tuza Afutu. Kate thrives on sharing the joy of West African rhythms with people of all musical abilities and particularly

enjoys working with people who begin the workshop claiming they've 'got no rhythm', but leave the workshop amazed by what they were able to do! Kate is running a Beginners - Intermediate workshop from 11am - 12.30pm, and Intermediate - Advanced from 1pm - 2.30pm. Each workshop costs just $30, or $50 for both, with drum hire $5. The workshops will be held at the Batemans Bay Community Centre, 2 Museum Place, Batemans Bay.Bookings are essential as places are limited: phone Kate on 0414 236 323, or email [email protected]. www.drumeffect.com.au

New play 'Confusions plus 2' will make you laugh and cryBay Theatre Players’ next production, Confusions plus 2 will make you laugh and cry, occasionally squirm, and eventually reflect on your own life and those you know and love!!The production is a combination of Alan Ayckbourn’s work, Confusions, a series of short plays, together with another of his short plays and a monologue by a second playwright from another compendium of plays, Mixed Doubles. The plays deal riotously, but with sharply pointed undertones, with the human dilemma of loneliness - a monologue delivered by a Vicar to

open our show, a mother unable to escape from baby talk; an unsuccessful seduction attempt; a fraught dinner

encounter; two people in the latter stages of their marriage whose habits and familiar phrases irritate each; and a summing up by five self-immolated

characters on park benches. There will be 12 performances including two group booking nights on April 30 and May 11. A preview is on Saturday 24 April, followed by the gala opening night on Saturday, 1 May. Shows are on May 2 (matinee), 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th (matinee), 12th, 14th and 15th. Evening performances are at 7.30 pm and the matinees at 2pm. Preview tickets (24 April) are $10, and other tickets are $15 or $13 for pensioners (pension cards must be presented on payment).
