MODERATOR’S MUSINGS

Getting Up There

Recently someone asked and I told them my age. They replied, “You are getting up there.” Yes, I reply, as I prepare the way of the Lord, I am getting up there. Heaven is in my sights everyday as I read my bible, journal, devotions and prayer. I am preparing a way to live with Jesus because He has prepared a place for me. All Christians are ‘getting up there’ to our heavenly home.

Sometimes our lives are a struggle and our hearts are heavy with burden, but knowing what is prepared for us, strengthens and fortifies our faith. Be encouraged when you are told You are ‘getting up there’ and thank the mand say, ‘yes, I am’.

NOTES FOR THE JOURNEY

Maybe you are like me, the season of Advent and Christmas has

snuck up on me and here I sit, less than a week before Advent, knowing, not just feeling, like I’m unprepared for the season, let alone Sunday. There is always so much to do and to prepare for as we enter this season. Advent is the four Sundays preceding Christmas, a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus on Christmas morning. While I know that there are things I need to do to prepare for the season and for each Sunday, maybe it seems silly to be fully prepared for a season of preparation.

There are many different ways to focus our attention and preparation during Advent. This year in worship, we will be doing many of the familiar things, Advent devotions, singing, lighting of the Advent Candles, decorating the church, candlelight Christmas Eve service and many of the other events and

celebrations of the season. Each Sunday we will be focusing on a different theme – Hope, Peace, Joy, Love – and how these are brought into the world through the person of Jesus and expressed in our faith. You may not feel hopeful, peaceful, joyful or loving, yet it is through the gift of Jesus, Immanuel – God with us – that these become more than feelings, they become promises and realities. On the Sunday after Christmas, we will celebrate by doing a lot of singing and having the Christmas choir sing for us.

It is my prayer that as we journey through the season of Advent toward the celebration and reality of Jesus’ birth, that we will experience anew, the gift of Jesus and what He gives us and the world each day. May all who are hopeless find Hope, may all who are conflicted find true Peace, may all who are joyless find true Joy and may all who don’t know love find the unconditional Love of God found in Jesus.

Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight!

Peace.

FAITHFUL PLANNING

UPDATE

I wanted to share an update on the Faithful Planning Process. Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to share as the Elders, Cabinet, and the congregation, how we saw the community and neighborhood that we live in. There was quite a long list of great observations, many that were from one end of the spectrum to the other. This was shared in summary form the following Sunday and a complete list was and still is available to all.

On October 23rd, we gathered to talk about the complied list and then to pray over it and where God maybe leading us. There will be at least one more opportunity to do this after the first of the year.

As we have talked together as the Faithful Planning team and in the prayer group, there have been a couple of different images that have come out. The first one is the image of a

Bridge. The church acts as a bridge in many different ways – to help people get needs met, to help people make connections, ultimately to help bridge people to a relationship with God. I really like this image of a bridge which connects well to the other image that came out of the prayer time.

That image is opportunities. Many have looked at the observations and seen things like fear, polarization, growing issues and uncertainty. All of these can lead us to see and imagine the opportunities for ministry in our community. While there is a lot of needs around us, they also present many different opportunities for us to present the Good News of God, reach out in word and action, to be agents of peace and love in the brokenness and division that is around us. These can be done as individuals and as the church.

If you do not have a list, they are available at the church and I encourage you to be praying over them for God’s leading and guidance in how we are to be bridges of opportunities to our neighborhood and community. Cathy Myers-Wirt will also be with us in January as we continue our journey.

Two pair of women’s/girl’s socks. One pair is yellow with stripes, the other is black and white stripes with pink.

These and some found jewelry items are in the office. A white plastic bag with some clothing items was left on the porch by the office door. There was no note with it, so we are presuming these are for the rummage sale. If you know otherwise, please let the office know.
