SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM COMPLETES ITS 2ND YEAR

The Service Learning Program (SLP) has culminated its second year with a successful Service Learning Showcase held on April 19th, 2006. The goals of the program were to heighten students’ personal commitment to service, social justice, and civic responsibility, and to broaden students’ perspective about the physician’s role in promoting patients’ health and well-being. The program was designed to enable students to better elicit and take into account patients’ needs, preferences, values and health beliefs, appreciate the biopsychosocial aspects of health and disease, and work with com-munity agencies to develop and implement workable solutions to health-related problems. The program received finan-cial support from several agencies, including the Achieving Diversity in Dentistry and Medicine Program, the American Medical Student Association Foundation, and the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Twelve students participated in the program this year. The students each completed a final project report and presented the findings at the Service Learning Showcase. Once again, evaluations from the program indicate that both students and faculty have perceived this experience as ex-tremely beneficial.

Congratulations, not only to the students completing the program, but also to Dr. Memoona Hasnain and Dr. Diane Kondratowicz for their hard work and determination in make the SLP an enormous success.

DFM NEWSLETTER STAFF Special thanks to Naomi Ashley-Benedict, Administrative Coordinator, Liz Hawes, Administrative Coordinator; and Meg Oberholtzer, Assistant to the Head for their contributions to this newsletter. Please direct questions and comments to Meg at [email protected].

DFM MVTP - Spring 2007

Congratulations to Elizabeth Hawes, Project Coordinator, Administration, who has been chosen to be recognized as the Spring 2007 DFM Most Valuable Team Player. Liz joined the department in March, 2004. Since that time, she has demonstrated remarkable flexibility during multiple job responsibility changes, using a “take-charge” attitude in moving projects forward. Liz was nominated by several people who made the following comments about her:

“Liz is special, and an outstanding resource for the department. Whenever I have a question I go to her first.” “Liz has superior computer skills and is widely recognized in the department as an expert in the development of databases and the generation of reports.” “Liz is a dedicated and valuable member of the DFM. She is an excellent resource for faculty and staff and is always willing to lend a hand. She is a true team player.” “Without a doubt, Liz Hawes should be the Most Valuable Team Player. Her work ethic, organizational, and computer skills, are outstanding. She is reliable, conscientious and efficient, often suggesting ways to improve processes with enthusiasm. Her willing-ness to pitch in wherever and whenever necessary, is greatly appreciated.” “Liz takes multi-tasking to an entirely new level. Her varied responsibilities in departmental finance and HR, her prior role as interim predoctoral coord, were completed effectively and efficiently. In her “spare” time, she plans the departmental holiday par-ties, installs plastic on drafty windows, and attends classes toward her MBA in the evenings. Liz is awesome!” Congratulations Liz and thank you for your outstanding service to the DFM and UIC!
