for Peace: in our World, in our Families and in our Hearts. We
also pray the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, for healing
and reparation in our Church.
SACRAMENTS
Baptism – The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on
Sundays at 12:30 PM. A Pre-Baptism class is required for both
parents prior to the Baptism of their first child. Register with
the Parish Office: 203.775.1035.
Marriage – Weddings generally are celebrated on Friday
evening or Saturday afternoons and must be scheduled at

Office.
“GLUTEN-FREE” HOSTS
St. Joseph Church has a limited supply of low-gluten
communion hosts available for those with a gluten allergy (not
dietary preference). While often referred to as “gluten-free,”
the hosts actually contain 0.01% gluten in order to conform to
liturgical standards. Please advise a priest or deacon before
Mass if you wish to receive the low-gluten host.
IMPORTANT HOSPITAL INFORMATION
Parishioners entering Danbury Hospital as patients
are urged to contact the St. Joseph Parish Office –

identify themselves as Catholic when being admit-
ted.

SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
In search of heavenly
bodies
Church father Tertullian insisted:
“The flesh is the hinge of salvation.” Cyril of Jerusalem concurred:
“Do not believe anyone who maintains that our bodies have noth-
ing to do with God.” These thoughts countered religious schools
disdaining the body and viewing only the purely spiritual soul as
worthy of the afterlife. Christian thinkers held the Resurrection of
Jesus as proof positive that God values the entire human person.
So we profess in our Creed each Sunday: “I believe in the resurrec-
tion of the body.” Our flesh and blood takes its dignity from the
God who chose to inhabit it personally.
TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14; 2 Thessalonians
2:16—3:5; Luke 20:27-38 (156). “May the Lord direct your hearts
to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ.”

MARTIN OF TOURS, BISHOP
Be of service
On Veterans Day we honor all people who have served in the Unit-
ed States Armed Forces. While we honor that past service, we
must also remember that veterans have a life after the military
and sometimes need help as civilians—whether it be a job or a
meal or a friend. Saint Martin of Tours was a fourth-century soldier
who, after encountering a beggar, said to his commander, “I have
served you as a soldier; now let me serve Christ.” Pray to Martin
for today’s veterans and serve those who’ve served us.
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 1:1-7; Luke 17:1-6 (491). “If your
brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.”
Tuesday, Nov 12, 2019
JOSAPHAT, BISHOP, MARTYR
Father, may they all be one
Josaphat is commonly known as the patron saint for Christian uni-
ty, his martyrdom in 1623 coming as the result of his efforts to
bring a segment of the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith back into
full communion with the Catholic Church following the Great
Schism of 1054. He succeeded. And today, 23 different Eastern
Catholic Churches—each keeping their unique Eastern liturgies,
theologies, and customs—are in full communion with the Roman
Church. What’s not as well known: Josaphat had a favorite devo-
tional practice, the penitential poklon (Old Slavic for “deep bow”)
while saying the Jesus Prayer. Honor him—and all humble, peace-
making efforts for unity—by praying the Jesus Prayer today: “Lord
Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 2:23—3:9; Luke 17:7-10 (492).
“Grace and mercy are with His holy ones.”

FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI
Be persistent in your faithful service
Poor health kept Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917) from joining
a local Italian convent. Determined, prayerful, and organized, she
started her own religious community. Soon known as Mother
Cabrini, she established convents and then opened schools, hospi-
tals, and homes to care for poor children. Pope Leo XIII asked
Frances to bring her considerable skills to the United States where
more than 50,000 Italian immigrants lived in poverty. When she

My sisters and brothers in the Lord, Peace be with you.
Last year Bishop Caggiano unveiled a new initiative to the
parishes of the Diocese regarding the uniformity and dignity of
the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Having been in
Bridgeport Diocese for 5 years, the Bishop noticed that accre-
tions and abuses had crept into the celebration of the liturgy in
many parishes that needed to be addressed. He charged the
Leadership Institute under the direction of Dr. Patrick Donovan
to create and implement Guidelines for Liturgical Ministries that
were to be followed in all the churches in the Diocese. The min-
istries addressed were ; Reader (previously known as Lector),
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion; Music Ministry; and
Hospitality (greeters and ushers).
Earlier this year our Readers, Ministers and Music minis-
tries completed classes and were presented with new guide-
lines for participating in the liturgy that included the proper
dress for serving, ongoing education, spiritual support and
changes in the manner in which their particular ministry is per-
formed. Think “choreography.” I am sure you have noticed some
of these changes and agree they have elevated the dignity and
majesty of our liturgies.
The last piece of the puzzle is our Hospitality ministry in-
cluding our greeters and ushers. As with the previous ministries,
the Bishop expressed concern about form and function. The
guidelines state that although proper dress and etiquette is
required for participating in all ministries, the ministry of hospi-
tality will need to be addressed on a local level because of the
varying needs of each church community.
Our greeters do a wonderful job in their ministries so the
only change will involve the distribution of the bulletins. In the
light of the fact that the entire congregation exits through the
main doorways after Mass, it would be best if the bulletins were
left in the racks to be taken only by those who desire one. That
would allow for a free flow of traffic.
Regarding our ushers, there will be one major change. Our
wonderful Knights of Columbus from the Candlewood Lake
Council will assist at all masses with the offertory collection. The
Knights you see at each Mass are members of St Joseph
Church and members of our local Council. Nationally, the
Knights provide this ministry at many parishes around the
country and their presence adds the dignity and formality of the
Mass. Please thank the Knights for their service to our parish
community. The several long-serving ushers we are used to see-
ing each week have generously offered to continue in their ser-
vice and we thank each of you, as well.
In summary, Bishop Frank’s intent is to assure that the
great majesty and dignity of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—our
highest form of prayer to our Creator—will be maintained in all
parishes. I believe that at our wonderful parish we have wonder-
fully succeeded in this most noble endeavor.

arrived, the local archbishop told her to go back to Italy! But
Frances persisted, bringing the love of God to the immigrant poor.
Canonized as the first naturalized American citizen in 1946, she is
the patron saint of immigrants. Say a prayer this day for the immi-
grants in your community.
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 6:1-11; Luke 17:11-19 (493).
“Stand up and go your way; your faith has been your salvation.”

In every end, a new beginning
This time of year, we hear a lot about the end of the world in the
readings. That might seem odd as we approach Advent and pre-
pare for the birth of Christ. A new-born, after all, is the ultimate
new beginning—especially when one is born to bring salvation. But
then again, we’re concluding the Church year soon, so reflecting
on endings is fitting. Even nature in northern climes is going
dormant to ready itself for rebirth in the spring. Get your spirit in
sync with the Church season and pray that the light continue to
overcome the darkness.
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 7:22b—8:1; Luke 17:20-25 (494).
“For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.”

ALBERT THE GREAT, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Charitable thinking
Saint Albert had broad interests that advanced many areas of
study in medieval Europe, including natural sciences, logic, music,
mathematics, astronomy, and economics. His incorporation of
Greek and Arabic philosophy in his studies paved the way for the
influential work of future Catholic theologians, including his re-
nowned student Saint Thomas Aquinas. But Albert’s expansive
intellectual pursuits, while rightly labeled “great” by history, all led
him back to one simple truth: “If we possess charity, we possess
God, for ‘God is Charity.’” Recognize God in the charitable giving—
material or spiritual, in word or deed—that you offer and receive
today.
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 13:1-9; Luke 17:26-37 (495). “All . .
. were by nature foolish who were in ignorance of God . . . who
from studying the works did not discern the artisan.”

MARGARET OF SCOTLAND
Don’t let comfort insulate you from the needy
Saint Margaret of Scotland may have been queen—with all the
perks of that lofty position—but her early life wasn’t easy. Her fa-
ther died when she was young and her family had to flee trouble.
She ended up in Scotland because she was shipwrecked there.
Maybe that’s why she was so kind and generous after marrying
the king, always helping the poor and building churches, because
she had known hard times, with no one but God to lean on. Let
your own trials and tribulations make you more empathetic with
others.
TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 18:14-16; 19:6-9; Luke 18:1-8
(496). “Will not God then secure the rights of His chosen ones
who call out to Him day and night?”

SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Some Saducees, those who deny that there is a
resurrection, came forward and put this question to
Jesus …” In this Sunday’s Gospel, the Saducees avoid
their real question. Is there a resurrection from the dead
or not? Rather than ask this question point blank, the
Saducees try to prove their point through a roundabout,
unrealistic scenario. Jesus cuts straight to the question
behind the question, citing Scripture passages relating to
the resurrection.
The Saducees are trying to trick Jesus. While we may not
intend to stump God, our doubts and questions may
have more in common with the Saducees than we care
to admit. Doubts are part and parcel of life in a fallen
world. Still, there are different ways we can word our
doubts to ourselves, God, and others. When we’re
struggling, truly struggling, about some article of faith, do
we admit it? Or do we cloak it with other, obtuse
questions to hide the nature of our concern?
Have you considered leaving the Church over the
hypocrisy of some of her members and leaders? Perhaps
the real question is: “How can a place blessed by God
and instituted by Christ have this evil in it? Can I
reconcile with the concept that an institution has an
admixture of good and bad? What do I expect from
others, from myself? What responsibility do I have to try
and remedy evil in an institution I’m part of?” Perhaps
you’ve wondered about the nature of romantic love, and
if God is love, does He really care so much about the
details of this particular scenario? Perhaps the real
question is: “Can my mind wrap around the concept of a
God whose law seems — on the surface, in this situation
— to make people unhappy? What is the relationship
between the moral law and human flourishing?” These
aren’t easy questions, but they are more honest ones.
This week, don’t be afraid of your deeper questions!
Bring them to God, to someone you trust, and to yourself.

Ahh, Marriage!!!
A husband and wife drove for miles in total silence after a terri-
ble argument in which neither would budge. Passing a farm, the
husband pointed to a mule in the pasture.
“Relative of yours?” he asked.
“Yes,” she replied. “By marriage.”
Executive overheard talking to a friend: “My wife tells me I don’t
display enough passion. Imagine! I have a good mind to send
her a memo.”
Did you hear about the dentist who married a manicurist? They
fought tooth and nail!
Over breakfast one morning, a woman said to her husband, “I
bet you don’t know what day this is.”
“Of course I do,” he replied indignantly as he marched out
the door and headed to his office.
About 10 AM, the doorbell rang and when the woman
opened the door she was handed a box containing a dozen long
-stemmed roses. At 1 PM, a beautifully wrapped, two-pound box
of chocolates was delivered. A little later, a boutique delivered a
designer dress.
The woman couldn’t wait for her husband to come home.
“First the flowers, then the candy, then the dress,” she ex-
claimed. “I’ve never spent a more wonderful Groundhog Day in
my whole life!”
