Fad: Fringe

Fringe was originally used in Native American clothing to repel rainwater; it was later adopted as a decorative fashion statement by the 1920s flappers, and reused in the ‘70s by the hippies who sympathized with Native American civil rights. I think fringe is only a fad because it’s now a nonfunctional, purely decorative addition to clothing. I also think the excessive amount of fringe used in this trend makes a garment look busy and tacky.

Classic: Leather jacket

Leather jackets originate from military aviators in the early 1900s, when they were called bomber jackets. In the 50s, the jacket became a symbol of rebellion, individualism, and general ‘coolness.’ Since then, many variations of color and style have evolved to fit both the nonconformist young adults and the chic fashion bloggers of the 21st century.I think the leather jackets has endured because the garment itself is functional, and leather can be constructed and designed to fit the current trends. It can be both classy and edgy, so it appeals to a several markets.
