PYR channels Art Deco in a luxurious new-build

Although it’s unabashedly a new-build, the 170-key Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills doesn’t take its iconic position at the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards lightly. Its nod to the city’s Art Deco heritage begins with a prow-like limestone exterior (jointly designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, Perkins+Will, and Gensler) that bursts into bloom as the visitor steps into a double-height lobby. Before her: a vision of creamy marble pillars and flooring, sleek black lacquer furniture, touches of celadon and gold, and accents of Lalique crystal and bronze.

Upstairs, guestroom interiors—by PYR—further carry the lobby’s muted palette into airy abodes where the beds are outfitted with curvy padded

headboards and marble baths feature gold accents and standalone sinks that resemble a starlet’s dressing table.

Elsewhere, the public spaces skew darker. An injection of rich cherry wood, plantation shutters, and palm-leaf patterned toss pillows moves Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s fine dining restaurant into a warmer, but understated, tropical ambience. The La Prairie

Spa proceeds further along that scale, with a moody reception that emphasizes bold black and glittering gold tones.

The sense of glamor reaches its apotheosis in the ballroom prefunction, which is one of PYR principal and global design director Pierre-Yves Rochon’s favorite areas.

With black-painted ceilings dotted with starry LED lights, a carpet set in a swirling Deco motif, and handcrafted gilded-glass sliding panel doors that open to reveal a cocktail bar, “it’s a space unlike any other,” he says. Upon entering the ballroom, he continues, a guest “feels as if the curtains have been drawn away from a stage. Darkness gives way to light thanks to large windows and chandeliers draped with sparkling glass beads.”

There it is in one fell swoop, a bewitching play of mysterious depths and sunny openness that together sum up the hotel—and its ever-mesmerizing, ever-sunny setting.
