It’s school holidays again and I still don’t have any idea what I’m doing! Seriously people-- is anyone on top of this child rearing business? I have an arts degree and I’m not even nailing ‘craft with kids’-- it’s like they aren’t even focussed on the outcome and just want to enjoy the process. Yuk-- those projects will never turn a profit on Etsy.

This time I’ve finally accepted that I won’t be able to work from home and enrich their little lives between phone calls so I’m signing them up for vacation care! This will be augmented with weekend activities where we do an ‘event’ on the Saturday and then spend Sunday peacefully playing on our device of choice. My heart goes out to the child care workers who will spend the next year picking glitter off themselves after one afternoon of supervised craft-- you are my heroes.

This issue we create an exciting list of attractions and events you can schedule optimistically into the calendar and tick off with varying levels of personal satisfaction. There is literally no way you can carry the amount of snacks you need to spend a day out with your kids so I recommend hiring an urban Sherpa to assist you on this mission. Please report back via Facebook with a carefully curated photoshoot of the fleeting moments of joy and exuberance you experienced between meltdowns! I need to believe some us know what we are doing.

Wishing you glitter filled dreams and a handbag full of crumbs not squished banana.

Freedom of Access to Information and Resources (FAIR) launched their Great School Libraries campaign recently to find libraries that help children and young people find reliable information; use the information effectively; think critically; make informed decisions; work productively with others; build knowledge and understanding of the world and safely navigate the internet.

Glennie Junior Years Library is truly honoured to be one of two schools in the Toowoomba region to appear on the Honours List. The results of the Great School Libraries campaign shows the school library is a valuable asset for the school, but for the library to perform at its peak, qualified library staff must be employed.

Education

5

CREATING A STUDY SPACEThe first step is to create a physical environment that’s conducive to learning. Distractions are everywhere and children don’t need any extra excuse to lose focus so try and keep the space clear and noise level low. Apart from ensuring the table and chairs are comfortable and at a suitable height (their feet should be able to touch the floor when sitting) it can be good to add one underrated piece of technology – a simple clock. A clock helps children to see small 10-15 minute blocks of homework instead of a never ending pile of it! These manageable blocks of time can be slowly increased as your child builds his or her powers of concentration. If they need to use a computer or laptop that is connected to the internet for research, ensure there are parental controls and keep an eye (and ear) out for online ‘chat’ behaviour… distracting!

THE APPLE NEVER FALLS FAR FROM THE TREE!Secondly, take a closer look at your attitudes towards homework. When your child has trouble with maths homework, do you tell them lengthy stories of how you struggled with maths or do you encourage them to keep trying and praise them for their efforts?

Many parents openly admit their maths shortcomings and in some cases, even brag about struggling with maths when they were at school. A 2015 study by the University of Chicago found that a parent’s attitude towards maths homework quickly rubs off on their children which can lead to everyone feeling nervous when the calculator comes out. So what’s the solution? It’s best to take your personal experience out of the equation and try to see homework as

a learning opportunity. Talk to your teacher about how to make use of maths apps, books or games or research learning programs for an extra helping hand.

THE THREE HARDEST WORDSThe next step is to see learning opportunities as they happen and take full advantage of them! In a world where knowledge is often at our fingertips and children look up to us for answers, the three most difficult words to say have become ‘I don’t know’. Instead of seeing this phrase as a failure, the next time you’re stumped by a primary school geography question, embrace it by cheerfully admitting you don’t know and asking your child to teach you when they find the answer or, if time permits, find the answer together. This is a great way to lead by example in showing your child the enjoyment that can come from learning or discovering something new. To further increase the effectiveness of this step, allow your child to make some mistakes along the way and praise them for their persistence rather than their answer.

SPOTTING THE DIFFERENCESAnd lastly, learn from your child and your child’s teacher. While you may work best at night, your child may be a morning person. While you may work best alone and in complete silence, your child may like the background noise of people being nearby. The perfect homework formula may never be found but with these tips, we’ll all be getting a lot closer.

FOUR STEPS TO HAPPIER HOMEWORK

Homework. It’s a word that’s often met with groans and frustration from parents and children alike but it shouldn’t be that way. Taking these simple steps to create a positive learning environment can turn those groans into grins.

Making Family Memories Starts at HomeSchool holidays present a great opportunity to spend time with our children – whether it’s scheduling a family holiday; a day trip or just an activity together. Of course quality time can be any time! It’s those precious moments we spend with our children making memories; teaching life’s lessons and sharing experiences.

The key characteristics are around personal interaction so that children can feel important, valued and loved. It’s opportunities as parents to role model our own behaviour; to observe and guide our children; give them a voice and develop strong bonds. Activities that promote happy and healthy family time together do not have to be difficult or expensive. What is critical is that as parents, you “show up” and are engaged, as opposed to being merely physically present.

With many parents working outside of the home and managing financial, emotional and other stressors, it can be difficult to find time to be both physically and emotionally present for our children. It may take some planning and commitment on your behalf however the investment will be worth it when you have happier children who have a sense of belonging that builds self confidence.

Involve the Kids in Planning A great way to start giving your child a voice and develop a sense of importance within the family is to invite them to share ideas with you about activities they would like to do, places they would like to go and interactions that would be meaningful to them. Perhaps you can create a “family activities jar” (get the kids to make and decorate it!)

where everyone is encouraged to write down ideas and add to the jar which can then be the “go to” when planning a holiday; an adventure or just a weekend activity. Often the planning and brainstorming ideas can be a fun and exciting activity all of its own!! Be sure to include everyone – especially middle children who often do not feel they have a voice and tend not to share their opinions. Use it as an opportunity to develop positive communication by asking questions about suggestions enthusiastically; affirming contributions and sharing and combining ideas. You might be surprised what you learn about your children and yourself when you start sharing things on your secret wish list to see, do or experience!

THE IMPORTANCE OF family time in raising

GREAT KIDS

Every parent wants to raise a happy, well adjusted child. Teaching respect, setting boundaries, imposing consequences etcetera are all part of that process, however, rules and regulations without relationship typically lead to rebellion and bitterness. One of the keys to forming strong relationships is the spending of quality time together. The family that plays together, stays together!

Traditions in Families – some ideasQuality time can also come in the form of regular traditions developed within your family from reading stories at bedtime to mealtime rituals. Again, it’s not always possible with shift work and the other juggling acts that parents do, however there is a body of research that supports the idea that families that come around the dining table and share a meal together often function better.

For many families, meal times can be unpleasant fights about food or sullen teenagers giving one word answers to common questions about school. Change the dynamic by introducing a topic that’s interesting to your children. Little boxes of “conversation starters” can be a regular feature of the dining table. These commercially bought or home made cards present the start of a sentence which family members then take turns completing example: “The funniest day of my life was when…” Kids LOVE hearing their parents’ stories

(just don’t turn it into a lecture!). Another idea might be to put everyone’s name in a jar on the table and take turns pulling out a name and saying something that you love/appreciate or admire about them. This is a fantastic way to praise each other (including mum and dad). This builds self esteem, models empathy and strengthens the sense of identity within a family unit.

Get creative and have fun with ways to connect in your family. While “whole family” time is important, so too is one on one time with each of the children; mother/ daughter; father/son; daddy/daughter date nights; mother/son coffee afternoons and every combination in between including parent only time.

Happy parenting!

Coping with school holidays when families

separateChildren need the continuing care and support of both parents. They will worry less if you can agree about what is going to happen and explain why to them. You should both:

> reassure your child/ren that you still love them

> remember that accepting and dealing with the separation will enable you to better assist your child/ren to do the same

> allow your child/ren the right to love both of you – don’t make them choose

> tell your child/ren that they are not to blame and help them to discuss their feelings – they often blame themselves, especially when parents fight about them or things they have done

> listen sympathetically to your child/ren’s feelings and opinions without judgment

> talk with the other parent about issues relating to your child/ren

> make sure your child/ren don’t hear or see you fighting

> keep your child/ren out of your arguments with or about the other parent

> be positive about the other parent when talking to your child/ren

> turn to other adults for emotional support rather than to your child/ren

> talk with your child/ren’s teachers so they understand the situation, and

> keep your focus on your child/ren’s well-being rather than on what is ‘fair’ for you.

Because it’s for the Kids…Professor Jennifer McIntosh is well known for her writings about the needs of children after separation. Jennifer is a clinical child psychologist, therapist and developmental researcher. In her article “Because it’s for the Kids – Building a secure parenting base after separation”, Jennifer discusses the impact of conflict on separated families and ways to manage this. The following suggestions are taken from that article:

Parents in conflict can protect their children by:> keeping the children out of the middle of their

arguments

> not asking the children to carry messages to the other parent

> not asking the children personal questions about the other parent

> making arrangements that suit the children

> knowing the children may have different feelings from the ones they have

> trying to notice what it’s really like for the children

> giving permission for the children to enjoy their other parent

> helping the children to have a healthy relationship with their other parent

> noticing when the tension is being soaked up by their children

> remembering that children can twist themselves into strange shapes inside, in order to cope with conflict between the people they love most

By taking on board these suggestions, parents will provide much needed support to their children, both while they are at home and in transitioning into the other parent’s care for lengthy periods of time, such as school holidays. If the children feel supported in their relationships with both of their parents, and are shielded from any conflict between their parents, then school holidays can be what they should be for children: a time for relaxing and enjoying time with family.

If you need support creating clear understandings with your partner about shared care, you can get more information from the team at Briese Lawyers.

Pamela Mortensen, Solicitor, Briese lawyers www.brieselawyers.com.au

School holidays are a time when families can come together and enjoy a break from the usual routines of school runs, homework, and packed lunches. For most families, they provide the opportunity to plan fun activities and even take a family vacation. But for separated families, it can be a time of added stress and anxiety, for parents and children. This is because school holidays are typically the time when children of separated families will spend more extended periods of time with each parent (and away from the other parent).

Sharing School Holiday CareA common arrangement is for parents to share school holiday time, so that one parent spends time with the children for the first half of the holiday period, and the other parent has the second half. Given that this arrangement will only occur four times each year, children may need additional support from their parents to cope with the transition and ensure that they feel stable. This can be difficult for parents, who may feel anxiety at the prospect of their children spending longer periods away from them. This is particularly so where parents’ trust relationships have broken down, as is often the case with separated families.

Tips for Helping Your ChildOne of the most important (and often most difficult) things for a separated parent to do to support their children is to put aside conflict and mistrust in order to cooperate with the other parent and support and encourage their relationship with the children. The Family Court of Australia website has tips to assist parents. The following is taken from the “parenting” section of the website:

3 Simple No Sew Fancy Dress For Kids

BAG OF JELLYBEANSWhat you need:

• Hit up your favourite department store for a huge clear bag - the good folk at the layby section or the back docks should be able to sort you out.

• Balloons

• Ribbon

What you do:

• Cut off any excess from the top of the bag (leave the sealed ‘bottom’ of the bag sealed for now). Ideally the bag should be around the same height - or a bit less - than your child. Laying the bag on a flat surface, cut two leg holes (big enough for their thighs but not big enough to let a balloon escape). Then cut two arm holes - about 30cm down from top of bag on the sides.

• Blow up balloons about halfway to their capacity (too taut and they will pop very easily).

• Once your child has stepped into the leg holes, start filling up the bag with balloons (not too many, if you leave some space they can wiggle the balloons out of the way when they need to sit down)

• Pop their arms through the holes, gather up

the excess bag over one shoulder and tie on the ribbon.

NINJA TURTLEWhat you need:

• Tin foil BBQ tray

• Green poster paint and paint brush or sponge

• Craft glue

• Wide clear tape

• Approx 2.5 metres of fabric or ribbon in orange, blue, purple or red

What you do:

• Paint the BBQ trays and set aside to dry.

• Cut ribbon or fabric into three lengths. You will need a piece long enough to go across the middle of the shorter width of the tray. Another piece to stick to the inside of the tray and long enough to wrap around your child’s tummy to tie at the front, and anything leftover can be used to tie around their head (with holes cut in for eyes, or as a headband)

• Tape the waist ribbon across the middle of the inside of the tray, with even lengths leftover on either side to attach the tray to your child’s back by wrapping around their tummy to tie up at the front.

• Glue the piece of ribbon across the outside of the BBQ

Tray ‘Shell’. Wrap any excess around and

tape to the inside of the tray.

• Allow to dry completely, then get your pizza ready -

you’re about to be ‘Cowabunga’d!’

LEGOWhat you need:

• Large cardboard box (big enough for your child to fit in) and second smaller box for hat piece (optional)

• Poster paint in your favourite LEGO colour, and paint brush or sponge

• Sturdy plastic cups in the same colour

• Scissors or Stanley knife

• Clear tape

What you do:

• Use clear tape to seal up box. Cut out head hole, arm holes and enough of the bottom of the box so that your child can a) wiggle into box, b) walk!

• Cut bottom of hat box, but DO NOT cut away all the board. Leave the cardboard as flaps so that you can push them back up into the box at an angle. This will help hold the box on your child’s head.

• Paint the box(es) and allow to dry.

• Once paint is dry, trace around the smaller bottom of plastic cup several times in a LEGO design on the box(es). Cut holes slightly bigger than the circles you have drawn, but not as big as the larger open end of cup, this will allow you to wedge the cups into the hole.

• From the inside, wedge the cups, bottom side out into holes so that they all stick out the same height. They will jam into place with no need for glue or tape.

• Wriggle them into the box, and ... Done *dusts off hands*
