ADVENT CHRISTMAS
What is Advent?Advent is the liturgical season
of four Sundays that begins the Church’s year of worship and prepares for Christmas.
In a spirit of hope and expectation it first focuses on the second coming of
Christ at the end of time, then concentrates on
preparation for Christmas. The liturgical colour for
the season is violet.
What is Christmas?Christmas is the liturgical season following Advent. It begins with the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord and includes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph; Mary, the Holy Mother of God; the Epiphany of the Lord; and concludes with the Baptism of the Lord. Add a white candle to the centre of the Advent wreath. Light the Christmas candle when you gather for meals through the Christmas season.
This Christmas may we be consistent in living the Gospel, welcoming Jesus into the centre of our lives.
HOLY FAMILY Then Jesus went down with them
and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. (Luke 2:51)
Jesus, thank you for our family. Help us to honour and respect each other even when we do things that are annoying. Amen
During this week, try hard to listen to, love and respect each person in your family.
It is very important toreaffirmthefamily, which remains the essential cell of society and the Church.

The Nativity SceneThe Nativity Scene represents the Christmas story according to the Gospels of Matthew
and Luke. The first nativity scene is said to have been created by St Francis of Assisi in 1223 to try and focus on the reason for Christmas, Christ. It was a living scene with people and animals in the various roles. Over time the people and animals were replaced by statues.
At the beginning of Advent set up an empty crib in a prominent place in the home in anticipation of Christmas and have figures from the nativity scene journey around the house. Move them as they travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day, with the wise men reaching the baby Jesus on the feast of the Epiphany.
The Jesse TreeThe Jesse Tree is used to tell the story of Jesus’ ancestry through symbols, starting with creation through to Jesus. The name comes from Jesse who was the father of King David of the Old Testament.
Search online to make your own Jesse Tree ornaments to add to your family Christmas tree during the Advent season.
