MACS on the Move We had another great winter sports season that impacted technology. Thousands connected to our Facebook Live or streams on MACS TV over a nine day period of WIAA regional and sectional action. The Lady MACS repeated as regional champions and over 1000 viewed their streams. The Boys won their third sectional final to qualify for state and over 2000 watched that night. Spring music

events are next on our stream schedule (live stream page.)

We are looking at security upgrades this month and the Media and Technology Committee is doing a final review of the 2018-19 technology hardware, policy and software directions based on long term goals. We forward these recommendations to the Commission. Spring lab updates and state testing updates to the server happen over break. And finally, a major security camera renovation is scheduled for this summer. More on that next month. A blessed Easter to you and your loved ones!

Love Series (TWL) is a program for Catholic parents that encourages and empowers them to embrace their role as the primary educators of their children; especially in the areas of moral and personal development. April topic is “Imitate the Holy Family.” Thank you for attending and growing with your child! http://www.twl4parents.com/

At MACS we have students who are waiting for a mentor. Please consider becoming a mentor and spend 30-minutes per week having fun while building a relationship with a young person. Talk, play a game, read a book, toss a ball, take a walk, you name it! Time is one of the most valuable gifts we can give a child. MACS partners with the Chippewa Area Mentor Program to match an adult with a student. Visit the mentor program website for more information www.chipfalls.org/camp. See our 5K information below:

SENIOR CLASS NEWS Junior/Senior Prom The Junior-Senior Prom will be held April 21st at Avalon. Dinner is at 6:15pm with music and dancing from 7:00-11:00pm. Parents and family may, if they wish, take pictures between 10:00-10:30pm Parents are to be aware of the possible use of alcohol before and after prom. This is a potential problem that only parents can deal with effectively. We ask that parents not drink in the presence of students and refrain from consuming alcohol while at Horizons. Although we have no policy and ultimately it is a matter of parental discretion, we strongly urge parents to NOT allow their sophomore and freshmen children to attend the prom with older students.

MACS. It is a state program which allows students to receive high school credit for working in one of

the many career options available. If interested, students should contact the guidance office as soon as possible to make sure it fits in their academic schedule next year. Summer Programs - In addition to the athletic camps offered this summer, there are many programs that allow student to explore careers throughout Wisconsin that include: Healthcare, Engineering, Music, Graphic Design, and more. For a list of the opportunities available, please go to the college and career readiness page on our website. You will find it under the school counselor page. The information is also available in the counselor’s office. We are still in need of businesses to offer guest speakers and youth apprenticeship opportunities to our students. Global Outreach a Catholic Program Have you ever wanted to make a difference in a young person's life, a difference that will, in time, help them transform the world? If so, Global Outreach, a Catholic student exchange program, to Catholic families is the chance in a lifetime. Global Outreach’s mission is to help young Catholics from six countries, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia, develop into true servant leaders. Our students study in U.S. Catholic high schools during their junior year and return to their countries to make a difference in their schools, in the Church, and in their society. This year, McDonell Central Catholic High School welcomed Global Outreach students to be part of its student body. We hope that next year we will be able to again send students to McDonell Central Catholic High School, but this can only happen if host families can be found for the students. Host families do not pay for the tuition at McDonell. Please open the door of your home and heart to a wonderful young person who will not only bring something special to the school, but also to your home. Students arrive in early August 2018 and return around June 15, 2019. To make a commitment to hosting a student for the 2018-2019 school year or to learn more, contact Barbara Tota-Boryczka, Executive Director, at (920) 540-3085 or email at [email protected] or contact Fr. Hosting International Students

Educatius Program This year Educatius students from Brazil, Vietnam, China and Thailand have thoroughly enjoyed all that McDonell has to offer! Sports, the School Musical and the class trip are some of their favorite things so far this year. Educatius representatives provide academic and monthly local host family support for their students. Students come with their own spending money. Host families can open their home up to students and receive a monthly stipend of $500/month per student. Hosting these future world leaders not only gives them the opportunity of a lifetime, but is life-changing for your family as you share your home and faith with them and learn about other cultures and customs. Contact area representative Anita Wahl to apply or with any questions to [email protected] or 715-271-6098.

In support of our community's Lenten focus on the virtue of charity, the McDonell Student Council sponsored a food drive in collaboration with the local Salvation Army. The whole food drive was very successful, and in the future, the student council will continue to work with the Salvation Army to support their

efforts in combating hunger and homelessness in the Chippewa Valley

community. Moving into fourth quarter, the Student Council is working to organize an exciting talent show and various service projects, and elect members for the 2018-19 school year. More information will be available in the near future if any high school student is interested in running for office. As always, please feel free to contact the McDonell Student Council at [email protected]

Stations prepare the way to Easter Students rally basketball players

Junior Achievement (JA) offers volunteer-delivered, grades K-12 programs that foster work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, while using experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. Last, but not least, it’s also fun! Thank you to our volunteers who have worked with our students at St. Charles and Holy Ghost this year: Kristin Anderl, Seth Eder, Rolly Enderes, Libby Leinenkugel, Greg Misfeldt, Jennifer Ruf, and Cathy Statz. Kudos to you all!

A fourth grader (above) signs her name to a “good luck” card for a McDonell basketball player before the big semifinals game in Madison on March 16th. Preparing to follow the Stations of the Cross with the

First graders discover the amazing characteristics of light

It’s fun to make designs with colored lights (above). How many bears are reflected in this mirror (above)?

Let there be light!

After learning about another form of energy called “light” through books, videos, and discussions, the first grade boys and girls were able to put their new-found knowledge to use. They explored a variety of stations using flashlights, mirrors, lenses and prisms.

A lens really changes the way this boy looks!

It’s all in the numbers

Mrs. Bridget Ericksen’s fourth grade class found a common denominator between math and the Olympics – it all comes down to the numbers (as well as considerable skill!). Whether it’s solving multiplication games, or adding up the medals in the Olympic games, the final scores determine the outcome.

These fourth grade girls enjoy a multiplication game together (left).

Fourth grade students welcome in the Chinese New Year Ms. Abramowicz’s fourth grade class recently celebrated Chinese New Year. Unlike our January 1st New Year’s holiday, the Chinese New Year is a moveable celebration. This year, the year of the Dog, began on February 16th. According to the Chinese Zodiac, people born this year (or in 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, etc.) are honest, friendly, loyal, smart, straightforward, venerable and have a strong sense of responsibility. As part of their study of this cultural event, the students made Chinese lanterns to help ring in the New Year.

The fourth grade students carefully copied and drew Chinese characters and then added their own personal touches to make each of their lanterns a unique piece of art (left and above).

Fun Facts about SPRING . . .

Children grow faster during the spring. The first known time there was a “spring cleaning” was in 1857. Sense of smell can be more acute in spring as there is usually more moisture in the air. Around 1800 bird species (out of 10,000) migrate in the spring, returning home after going away for the winter. The first spring flower to bloom is often the dandelion. Originally from Asia, it can be used as food and medicine. Spring fever is real! When the temperature rises, blood vessels expand and some people get an energetic feeling. A myth says that only at the spring equinox can you stand a raw egg on its end. This is just a myth. With a little

practice, you can do that at any time of the year.

St. Charles and Holy Ghost Schools recently held a book drive for their school libraries. K-5 families were asked to donate new or gently used books to help widen the selection of materials on the school library shelves. If they wanted, families could give a book in memory or honor of someone special. When the drive came to an end, over 300 books were donated! Many thanks to everyone who shared their love of books. Piles of books were donated at Holy Ghost (right).

Beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss would have turned 108 on March 2nd, and he would have been proud to see that his many works are still as popular as ever with children – and adults – of all ages. Born Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904, the writer produced more than 60 children’s books before his death in 1991. To remember this favorite author, St. Charles and Holy Ghost students could wear green clothing (in honor of Green Eggs and Ham) or dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character on March 2nd. If they did so, they were asked to make a small donation to families in need. Everyone had a great time celebrating this very special birthday! “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” – Happy Birthday to You! (1959)

Instead of cheese, everyone say “Cat in the Hat”! Mrs. Bahnub shares Dr. Seuss with kindergarteners.
