Dear Parent/carerFalmouth School offers a full and rounded education to all students from Year 7 to Year 11 and also to our Sixth Form. This prospectus will provide you with a brief snapshot of life at our school and everything we stand for, however please contact us if you would like any further information, or would like to arrange a visit. We will be delighted to show you around and answer any queries that you may have.

Staff, students and governors are very proud of our recent achievements. In August 2011 the school became an Academy and we are very excited by the benefits that the new status is bringing. In September 2011 we introduced a new uniform which has been very well received within the community. At the same time we introduced a fair and robust behaviour policy to ensure that all students can fulfil their potential in the classroom. Our examination results have been improving steadily and we achieved the best ever examination results in 2011, and in recent years students in the Sixth Form who wish to go on to university have secured places in a university of choice.

“My child is happy at Falmouth School and the opportunities & experiences she has been offered have helped develop her into a conscientious student with high aspirations.”

Our school building is bright and clean. We have had significant investment in our school building over recent years, most recently with new windows, external walls and heating to the original block parallel with Trescobeas road. coupled with the recent enhancements to our design Technology block, the installation of 210 solar panels and a wind turbine, our carbon emissions are falling rapidly. We have detailed plans and funding for further building enhancements over the coming years. In addition the Governors are currently pursuing a reconfiguration of our external sports fields which should enhance the sports facilities currently available.

Falmouth School is a friendly and caring school which is focused on ensuring that all students develop into happy, confident young people fulfilling their potential and capable of taking a full role in society. We are committed to the development of the whole child, and offer a wide range of extra curricular activities and trips to provide opportunities for personal and social development alongside academic achievement. Our tracking systems ensure that students continue to make good progress, and we employ a range of interventions to support individuals when needed. Staff know individual students extremely well and do everything possible to help meet their needs and aspirations, and relationships between staff and students are very positive.

We believe that it is a real privilege to work with young people as they grow from children into young adults, and look forward to working in partnership with parents to achieve success for every child.

Yours faithfully

... enterprise & team work

your School Day term DateS

“Falmouth School gave me the confidence, opportunity & skills to go on to further education.”

This creates positions of responsibility for students within the House system, and provides more opportunities for older students to work with younger ones, developing their leadership skills. We also believe that under this system, students will get to know people from other year groups in a safe environment while still working with their year group peers in lessons, and this will develop the positive relationships that exist across the school.

the first day

On their first day students will meet their tutor and be given their student planner and personalised timetable. Year 7 students starting in September will spend the first morning working with their tutor before commencing lessons after lunch. during their first few days, students from Year 8 are assigned to help each group find their way around the School and answer any questions which may arise.

Students joining the school in the middle of the academic year will be assigned a ‘buddy’ in their tutor group to show them around the school.

What students should have each day

Students should ensure that they are properly equipped for each day, so they should first refer to their planner to check which lessons they have. each day they are expected to bring their planner, pencil case complete with pencils, pens, rubber, pencil sharpener, coloured pencils/pens, ruler and a scientific calculator. When choosing a calculator, choose one with a ‘natural display’ (one where input appears exactly as it does on the page).

In addition, students need to ensure that they have the above, together with the books they need for the day, their Pe kit as necessary and any ingredients they may need for Food Technology.

the school calendar

This is published in advance and can be viewed at any time by visiting www.falmouthschool.net. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that published dates are adhered to, there may be occasions when dates are changed – these will appear on the on-line calendar and you will also be informed about these via the school newsletter.

parent evenings

Throughout the academic year, parents are invited to meet with their child’s teachers and tutor. These run after school, from 4pm to 7pm and are appointment-based. Your child will receive a booking sheet prior to the evening to make appointments with their teachers. If you are unable to attend the evening but would like to receive an update on your child’s progress, please let us know.

sports day

World of Sport day is a chance for everyone to participate in a wide range of sports, whilst representing their House. As well as the more traditional sports such as athletics, World of Sports day gives students the opportunity to sign up to compete in other sports such as cycling, kayaking, roller-skating, stand up paddle-boarding, tennis, cricket and volleyball. On the day, additional ‘turn up and try’ events such as a football keep up challenge, frisbee target throw and the 500m row are run to allow students and staff to compete against each other for their houses in a fun competition.

the house system

All students are attached to a ‘House’ on entry to the school (Boscawen, Melvill, Smithwick and Trelawney). The tutor groups are made up of students from their own year group, but each house will have students from Year 7 to 11 and will be led and guided by a Head of House with the support of the Student Achievement Team.

House tutoring allows us to increase the opportunities for leadership, competition, and a sense of belonging.

assembly

each House group has an assembly every week. The assemblies are for each Tutor Group in theHouse from Years 7-11.

inset days

Throughout the year there are a small number of staff training days (INSeT days). These dates are published in advance in the school calendar.

the school year:

The school year is split into three terms: Autumn, Spring and Summer.

each term has a half term break for 1 week midway through each term.

Term times at present are set by the Local Authority and do change slightly from year to year.

On average a school term will be between 12-15 weeks in length. Schools in england are open for 195 days a year with 190 days open for students.

School uniform policy

Plain black in colour with embroidered logo on left pocket. Blazers not to be ‘customised’ e.g. sleeves to be made smaller. School supplier is Mc Sports. If you purchase a black blazer from elsewhere it will need to match the school supplier item and you will need to get it embroidered (the school can supply the details of the recommended embroiderer if requested). Blazer to be worn inside the building in all public areas at all times.

Managing students The study environment

being ready for lessons

Organisation is an important part of secondary education for students as they progress through their academic career. At Falmouth School students will have more teachers, different classes, more school friends and more homework than they experienced in Primary School. It is important for students to develop a set of routines for home and school which will help them succeed and reach their full potential.

At Falmouth School we will expect all students to wear their uniform smartly, to bring a bag with pens, pencils and their school organiser plus any books, equipment and homework required for that day.

It is helpful if students have a routine of preparing for school the next day before bedtime. This can be organising uniform, packing their bag, checking their

“Staff are motivational and inspirational, they have high expectations for my child and motivate and challenge her to push her own boundaries, she will be the best she can be at Falmouth School.”

the focus in lessons

The school is structured in such a way as to enable all students to have opportunities to be successful. Our students deserve to leave Falmouth as well rounded individuals with the best examination results they can achieve.

We emphasise the importance of personal responsibility and good relationships with all members of the school. There is an atmosphere of care and concern for each individual within a clear framework of firm but fair discipline.

The behaviour of students at Falmouth is very good. Our students are polite and mature young people who have a positive attitude towards their work, their teachers and each other. effort, hard work and participation in all aspects of school life are valued highly and students are rewarded through a system of star points.

The school has a clear Behaviour Policy and there are clear sanctions for students who choose to misbehave. These include after school detention, daily report cards and exclusion. Sanctions run parallel with student support to help improve future behaviour. equally we welcome praise and regular formal recognition of achievement is a vital part of effective student development.

Our system is based on the fundamental concept of chance before consequence. If a sanction is required it will be consistent in both the setting and operation. After school detentions are referred to as ‘c3’s because they indicate that the student has not responded to the first and second chance issued by the teacher. A c3 sanction lasts for 1 hour after school. This system is applied to all lessons to ensure that the focus in lessons is learning for all students.

timetable and organiser so that they are prepared and not rushing in the morning.

Students do have the opportunity of using a locker to store books and equipment. ensuring the locker key is packed in the bag the night before will save unnecessary stress if accidently left at home.

Some students find managing their homework tasks challenging. We support students by providing them with an organiser for them to record their homework tasks. Homework advice can be found on the school website. Parents can support their child with home-work by providing a regular place and a regular time to work on homework. Alternatively your son or daughter may wish to attend our staffed homework club which runs most days after school in the library.

Key stage 3

All students will follow the national secondary curriculum at Key Stage 3 (from Year 7 to Year 9). The curriculum is made up of ‘core’ and ‘Foundation’ subjects.

Students are placed in pathways to best match their ability across a large proportion of lessons. Students are therefore in sets for certain lessons throughout the Key Stage. The pathways allow the statutory entitlement of lessons to be delivered at the appropriate pace to all students with a focus on the learner at all times.

Key stage 4

At the end of Year 9 students will make choices for Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11). This is called the ‘Year 9 Option Process’. At Key Stage 4 all students will be required to still follow ‘core’ subjects alongside their chosen ‘Options’.

Work experience is a very important part of Key Stage 4. Students join the workforce for a week in the Summer Term of Year 10 to experience a work environment. This experience is also crucial in helping to shape course choices when each student moves from Key Stage 4 to 5 (staying in our Sixth Form college or moving on to a different learning environment). Owing to the close relationship between Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 subjects these stages are often referred together as the 14-19 curriculum.

“When we moved from Buckinghamshire, we dreamt of our children going to their successful local community school and being taught by passionate, committed staff and we are absolutely delighted to have found that in Falmouth School.”

the school day

The school day has three taught lessons with a range of clubs and activities available after 3:00pm from Monday to Friday. The timetable operates on a two week cycle, referred to as ‘Week One’ and ‘Week Two’. Some lessons such as ‘core’ subjects, for example english and Maths, will take place each week with some ‘Foundation’ subjects, for example Geography and History, having a lesson once every week. each lesson lasts for 100 minutes.

careers advice & guidance

We have a strong belief in providing all of our students with personalised practical advice and guidance which will support them throughout their studies at Falmouth School to make the right decisions about their futures. We strive to provide support and guidance which equips every student with the tools they need to achieve their academic and employment potential.

This guidance and support begins in Key Stage 3 where students are given regular opportunities to access and investigate careers information. This is done through their Student development programme by looking at the range of opportunities available and the skills and qualities needed to be successful in different employment sectors.

In Year 9 the information and guidance offered through our Student development programme is supplemented by small group workshops and one to one advice and guidance sessions. These are provided by both independent careers guidance

individual learning

Falmouth School is committed to meeting the individual needs of every student. Some students need additional help in school for a variety of reasons. Some needs are short term, others more permanent but they are all important. We work hard to make the change from Primary to Secondary School a positive and enjoyable process. Students are visited at Primary School prior to transfer so their individual needs can be planned for by teachers at Falmouth School.

every student is encouraged to develop and achieve according to their abilities, aptitudes and interests and we constantly look for opportunities to support them. Teaching Assistants are organised in dedicated teams working with specific year groups so that they get to know your child’s needs and strengths.

staff and senior teaching staff, who all have many years of training and experience providing support and guidance to young people. All students in Year 9 are interviewed one to one to discuss their progress and aspirations and are offered advice on potential careers to consider as well as suitable courses at GcSe, based upon their skills and aptitudes.

In Years 10 to 13 this individualised guidance continues to help students make the right choices concerning their options Post 16 and then routes into Higher education, employment or further training. As well as the offered one to one sessions, students have the opportunity to have further one to one advice and guidance sessions throughout the year to help them make the important decisions about their futures. We are proud of the access to the individualised support we are able to offer. We strive to ensure we meet the needs of every child so they are capable of making informed decisions about their futures, based upon sound independent advice.

“Thank you for your hard work and determination, we just wanted to say how pleased we’ve been with our sons education.”

ProgressionAssessment & reporting

1514

reporting progress home

We believe that assessment plays a central role in a child’s education. To make progress towards challenging targets students need to know the areas where they have achieved well and those where they need to improve.

In lessons assessment may appear in many different forms; question and answer sessions, quizzes, tests, group presentations or peer and self assessments to name a few. All these methods allow a student to address their weaknesses and achieve their potential.Formal reports to parents occur every term in Key Stages 3 and 4 and every half term in the Sixth Form. reports comprise either an Interim or a Full report. Both Interim and Full reports contain grades that show the attainment of a student and their effort for the period since the last report.

tracKing progress

We keep detailed information on the performance of every student in each curriculum area. Teachers record student achievements for their class work and homework. Periodically the student’s attainment is recorded centrally. This attainment is compared to national standards for excellent progress. We challenge our students by setting targets that encourage them to meet, and aim to exceed, the achievement of the top 25% of students nationally who start with the same prior attainment.

supporting personal development ... ... rising to challenges

Attainment is shown as National curriculum sublevels in Key Stage 3. This is the level at which the student is currently working. GcSe, AS or A2 level grades are used in Key Stage 4 or our Sixth Form. These grades show the expected grade outcome that the student can expect if they continue to work at their current level of attainment.

effort is given a grade on a scale from A to e. The same system for assessing effort is used in every school year, from Year 7 to Year 13. This consistency allows us and parents to compare effort across the age groups.

In Year 7 there is an extra report which is sent home towards the end of October. This consists solely of effort grades. The intention of this report is to give parents an early indication how their son or daughter is settling in to the Secondary school way of life. Any issues can be quickly followed up.

Full reports also contain written comments from each of a child’s teachers addressing their progress and target areas for improvement. A comment also is provided by the student’s form tutor which addresses overall development and other successes or areas for development in school life.

If a student has received a particularly good set of reports, they will be recommended for Praise day. This is a one to one meeting with a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team, or other senior staff. At this meeting the child will be formally praised, but will also be asked for their thoughts and ideas on a range of other school topics, and the secrets to their success!

Parents’ evenings occur once every year. These meetings allow parents to meet and discuss the progress of their child with their teachers. These evenings are often very busy and therefore an appointments sheet is provided by the tutor for students to make appointments for the event.

“I left Falmouth School with the confidence and energy to tackle further education and the world of work! The skills I learnt as well as the academic qualities prepared me well for life.”

links with the local University, the ‘Poly’ and Princess Pavilions, both of whom have accommodated our renowned student performances.

There are 8 dedicated IcT suites including a full Apple iMac Suite complete with ‘green screen’ technology and more than 500 Pcs and laptops around the school. We use both Apple and Windows software. Wireless networking is also available. This allows uninterrupted learning to take place throughout the school and our developments in virtual learning allow students to easily access work remotely via the school website.

Our well stocked library is housed in a large spacious area, providing a formal learning area, our popular homework club, an e-learning centre with Pc’s for student access, a huge selection of fiction and non-fiction books, along with daily newspapers, magazines and a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute specialist careers library.

Our design Technology department has specialist rooms with bespoke equipment, including our wonderful Sorrell Building at the front of the School, which was a student led design and build project.

Falmouth School is situated on extensive grounds which are ideal for athletics and team games; we have many hard courts for tennis and other ball games, as well as an indoor sports hall and gymnasium, all of which offer extensive and convenient Pe resources all immediately adjacent to the school buildings, as well as easy access to a variety of watersports. We run successful and competitive teams who compete in a variety of both team and individual sports, locally and nationally in many sports.

off the school site

Falmouth School works in partnership with a number of off site providers to ensure that students get the very best opportunities off site to complement those available within our boundaries. At times this work involves full groups and at other times it can just be for an individual.

At Key Stage 4 & 5 we have worked closely with combined Training Falmouth (cTc) for a number of years to offer work based NVQ qualifications on day release courses. We also have students working with Falmouth Marine School (cornwall college) at these age groups.

Working with cornwall Marine Network and elemental (waterfront leisure provider) has further expanded our curriculum and enrichment based opportunities available to students.

Through our partnership with other schools (South Shore Partnership with Penryn, Helston and Mullion schools) in the local area we have been able to secure significant resources, including funding, that have enabled us to offer and provide the very best opportunities available to all students at Falmouth School.

on the school site

Specialist classrooms are essential in promoting a productive and stimulating learning environment, which provide the best facilities for academic subjects and extensive resources for our extra-curricular and enrichment activities including sport, art, music and drama. Wherever possible, subject rooms are grouped together, to provide a suite of dedicated teaching rooms.

We have purpose-built art studios which are light, airy and modern. There are specialist rooms for IT and science and we are particularly proud of our drama and music facilities, with ample practice space, as well as dedicated classrooms and a movement centre where dance and drama take place. In addition to the main school hall, which is used for performance and concerts as it has full stage lighting and sound equipment, we also have close

enterprising community

The enterprising skills embedded in school are also put to the best of use out in the wider community. examples here include working with the Fire Station, local businesses, the Town council, county council and local residents associations. Our students have also used their skills to help run very successful IT classes for local residents for a number of years, through our participation in the Silver Surfer Programme. Our young people are also involved in ecological and environmental projects like the Waterfront crew, dance projects and music events in the community.

enterprising school

enterprise is very important in developing and promoting lifelong skills that will help young people to become well-rounded individuals who are able to be self-reliant, strong team members and excellent employable communicators.

What are those enterprise Skills?Team work, communication skills, fiscal awareness, problem solving and risk taking.

enterprise Learning is embedded in general learning at Falmouth School. We also believe that our school is part of our community; as such we are involved with many projects locally, nationally and internationally. Our ethos is that we share our skills and abilities with the wider community and enjoy the opportunity to have them share their skills with us.

Enriching your time

“I have enjoyed my lessons, we have learnt about money, the environment and people who live in other countries in English. It was part of a competition and I really liked everything, but especially performing in front of the judges.”

it is not just the lessons!

It is important that young people are prepared for a world which is rapidly changing. Young people today need to develop the skills and outlook which will allow them to make the most of their individual abilities to contribute to an ever changing society and the challenges that this will bring.

We offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities throughout the school day, as well as after school and holiday activities which support and develop skills which are not readily gained through the standard academic curriculum.

We are renowned for our exceptional musical and performance opportunities as well as Sport, duke of edinburgh and community Programmes. every student is encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities which can develop the individual’s initiative and self-reliance, as well as cultivating interests and hobbies that may last a lifetime.

Our Sixth Form College

The team at Falmouth Sixth Form college works hard to create a friendly and supportive environment in which a learner can flourish. We pride ourselves on paying attention to the needs of individual students, keeping groups as small as possible and giving each student the opportunity to express themselves and make the most of their potential.

We offer a wide range of A-Levels and equivalent qualifications but that’s not all; at Falmouth Sixth Form college, there are plenty of opportunities for curriculum enrichment and, in today’s competitive Higher education and employment markets, these additional activities are what can make a cV stand out from the crowd.

“Falmouth Sixth Form gives great teaching in a friendly environment and provides loads of opportunities.”

“I enjoy the mature relationships with staff, and the freedom to manage my time.”

“The Sixth Form allowed me to improve my grades, and gave me the advice & support I needed to make the right decisions to achieve the course and future I wanted.”
