Safety and ergonomics are the primary factors that define the quality of a safety harness.

The issue of ergonomics is not even anchored in the standards and is difficult to quantify. Even today, tests are only car-ried out with dummies. It is therefore all the more important that the harness developers have years of their own appli-cation experience and adopt a systematic and scientific approach and that they have a precise understanding of the user’s requirements. We have more than 20 years of experience in height assembly – we know what we are talking about!

Strength is not the only decisive factor, it is the ergonomics that set the limits in terms of the arresting forces exerted on the body when suspended, after a fall, or for every-day use. The potentially fatal orthostatic shock (suspension trauma) can only be alleviated by ergonomically optimised har-ness geometries and design details.

Ergonomics does not just entail padding. BORNACK harnesses are fitted with small carefully positioned padding elements and the harness is designed to fit the body effi-ciently.

Another important aspect when selecting harnesses is the way it is worn and locked into position with the buckles. Simple click-fasteners with frame parts are uncomplicated and robust. The conscious design of the BORNACK-click-fasteners facilitates a good grip and simple and fast connection. The new CLICK fasteners are even faster.

It is important that the safety harness can be correctly configured (adjusted) for the wearer and that the user maintains an upright, almost vertical position in the har-ness. Use Innovative harness design with ergonomic features for a wide range of uses. The vertical step sling of the ENERGY harness has a patented energy absorbing function. The energy absorber tape will rip on the vertical-fall- arresting D-ring during a fall and will shift to chest height to allow an ergonomic, upright suspension position. If the RS S05 vertical-fall-arresting runner is used, the load is also shifted to the sternal anchor point.This prevents the harness slipping to an uncomfortable position in case of a fall.

Life-vestFS 2-3 MARITIME

UseLife-vest made of sturdy, seawater-resistant nylon material for operations above water even in extreme work situations. It can be put on quickly, is simple to operate and versatile. Velcro fasteners connect it with a full body harness.

Both securing elements have been tested and certified in accordance with the European Standard EN 399 and individually in accordance with other relevant standards. The life-vest is approved for use with the body harness FS 3 AVIAT and for the aviation industry. Also, the body harness FS 2-3 MARITIME is the only PPE system in the European market that meets the strict regulations of the US Coast Guards. BORNACK therefore closes a safety gap in the protective equipment for safe working above water.

UseThe patented survival suit was specially designed for tough weather conditions and complicated work tasks at height close to water, the sea, coastal areas and inland lakes, and protects against undercooling and drowning.

The full body harness is worn below the suit and connected to the attached attachment D-ring via an integrated seawater-resistant stainless steel adapter. The inner rescue harness prevents air collecting in the suit extremities even when in the water, thereby ensuring the casualty main-tains an optimum position in the water. In combination with the match-ing life-vest, it ensures that the body lies flat in the water and the head remains above water.

The survival suit can be put on and taken off without having to remove the body harness. Its clever design allows enough freedom of movement whilst working, even when suspended in the harness.

Suspension trauma – potentially fatalHumans are not physically equipped to hang freely in ropes and harnesses, they are made to walk/climb and stand; and the blood circulation system, i.e. the sys-tem that supplies blood to vital organs, has been designed for this too. A so-called suspension trauma can develop more quickly or slowly depending on many fac-tors, such as physical condition and men-tal state, the ergonomic design of the full body harnesses etc.: blood collects in the legs, muscle pumps stop working and pinching by the harness causes the blood circulation to collapse etc.

For this reason, regulations governing res-cue concepts and equipment were drawn up to ensure that casualties are rescued from a potentially life-threatening sus-pension situation as quickly as possible!

Correct responseSince the beginning of the 1990s BORNACK has systematically addressed this issue, introduced rescue procedures and offered theoretical and practical training to persons who work at heights.

Simple tools are available that, if used correctly, can significantly reduce the effect of a suspension trauma.

The problem is serious, if the casualty is unconscious in his harness – possibly as a result of feeling ill or physical exertion. There is no way for an unconscious per-son to alleviate the suspension situation.

BORNACK vein protection padsV-PROTECTThe new protection pads V-PROTECT offer a unique opportunity to maintain blood circulation. The specially shaped V-PROTECT pads create a bridge over the vein near the leg straps and keep the veins free to transport blood. The blood pressure in the vein has dropped from approx. 136 mmhg to approx. 3.0 mmhg. Even tightly pulled leg straps during suspension can seriously impact on blood circulation.

The V-PROTECT therefore creates impor-tant time to rescue a casualty from a sus-pended position! Experience has shown that the suspension time can be prolon-ged by about 100 %.

V-PROTECT gives you more time and is a very inexpensive way to be safer! This applies in particular to full body harnes-ses in compliance with EN 361 when the rear D-ring is used.

We have decided to equip all our STRIPE harness series with V-PROTECT to take advantage of this extra safety feature and make it standard.

UseWorldwide patented protection against suspension trauma. It prevents impairment or even blockage of the blood circulation when a person hangs freely in a full body harness. The system comprises distance pads that are affixed to the leg straps above the veins to form a bridge. This sig-nificantly reduces the risk of a suspension trauma and is a great improve-ment on the ergonomic quality of a full body harness.

In particular, V-PROTECT works for unconscious persons who have been hurt after a fall or who have collapsed and are incapacitated and suspend-ed in the harness. Tests with the V-PROTECT have shown that the suspen-sion time in a full body harness can be extended by up to 50 to 100 %.

Ergonomic design for easy handling with no 'catches'. The was the goal of the product development process and it has been achieved perfectly. In combination with modern and very high-performance kernmantel ropes, it is the securing device of the future.

'Arresting' a fall, 'positioning' and 'restraint', 'abseiling' and 'secur-ing the lead climber' are all functions offered by the LORY securing device. You will find various models in the catalogue, either for universal use or specific models for certain applications.

Securing a lead climber LORY CLIMB

UseSecuring persons vertical climbing up a mast or a horizontal climb in areas where there is a risk of falling via a securing person, or secure following climbers. The person climbing is connected to the safety rope. During climbing, securing points are positioned using sharp edge-tested slings.

A 2nd trained person secures the climber and releases the rope in a con-trolled manner. This is facilitated by the special spring-controlled basic setting of the LORY CLIMB.

If the climber falls, the LORY CLIMB arrests the person's fall. The securing person can lower the person who has fallen in a safe manner without any additional equipment!

The equipment may only be used by trained personnel in compliance with an individual rescue plan.

Securing device ROPSTOP

The perfect securing device for permanent professional use and use in extreme conditions (weather, dirt etc.).

The device is hinged and can be placed or removed anywhere along the rope. This means it is possible to combine the device with various rope lengths or persons one after another to allow climbing on a taut climbing rope. The ROPSTOP03 can be used on both twisted ropes and kernmantel ropes.

The fastener mechanism is secured in a unique fashion: twin-lock bayonet fastener that can be operated quickly and easily with just one hand. The ROPSTOP device locks automatically to close. No additional screw locks that could be forgotten.

Safety: In the event of a fall, an eccentric tappet clamps the secur-ing rope and arrests the user safely. Ergonomics: A separate tape energy absorber limits the impact force and thereby minimises the risk of injury. The tape energy absorber can be integrated as a connection between the arrester device and arrester D-ring on the body harness or in the mounts of the guide rope.

Energy absorber line PYTHON

In a systematic development process, BORNACK studied the previ-ously known fall arresting technologies and further optimised all tolerance values. After many trials on the test stand and practical exercises, a completely new product was created: The shock absorber line PYTHON.

The shock force is no longer absorbed via the very heavily influ-enced rope friction or the ripping of a strap/seam. In the PYTHON system, the shock is absorbed by converting the energy across the entire length of the shock absorber line! This means it is possible to make this product very compact and handy..

The 10 user benefits of the PYTHON: 1. Shortening of the braking path by around 33 % = shorter

arresting path. This means that the rope protection can also be used even at lower working heights.

2. Low impact force, optimum absorption curve across the entire braking path.

3. Static strength of the overall product 22.0 kN.4. Very high energy absorption capacity: A PYTHON P02 achieves

absorption outputs for up to 3 consecutive falls. This is the greatest safety reserve for the rescue or the return after a fall.

5. Tested and certified for horizontal use and for edge loads.6. Easy handling: No annoying energy absorber package, instead

it is slim across the entire length. 7. No textile parts that are sensitive to climatic conditions such

as Dyneema or untreated fibres made polyethylene. Therefore no irreversible change caused by contact heat (attachment to heating pipes etc.) or longer storage periods in places where heat can accumulate (containers, cars etc.).

8. Fall load is easily recognisable to inexperienced users. 9. Y-shaped shock absorber lines with 2 strands can be used

without limitation in terms of strength or use.10. Attachment point encircled with the shock absorber line is

possible without limitation.


UseUsed as a fall-arrest-system when working in exposed situations (e.g. securing when window cleaning, climbing from vertical fall-arrest-system equipment on rooftops etc.). Ideally suited for use in rough operating con-ditions with large mechanical loads.

The energy absorber line PYTHON P02 stands out thanks to its innovative arresting method. UseThe abseiling and positioning device DRD60 is a unique patented system with many useful benefits.

In contrast to other devices, it works with a double rope and therefore has an integrated redundancy function. Loads are distributed equally across both ropes and therefore only need to bear half the load. In the event of an accident (failure of one of the ropes) the remaining, already taut, rope assumes the function on the shortest arresting path. This eliminates larg-er arresting paths caused by rope expansion and reaction paths! In the case of longer rope lengths, arresting paths of up to 10 m are prevented.

The device is easy to use and can also be used safely by less experienced persons thanks to the double-stop function. If necessary, both ropes can be controlled individually, making it possible to pass vertical areas (right/left outside the perpendicular). Rope equipment The craft of rope-making is ancient and is still of paramount importance today for securing ropes, even though nowadays new materials and production techniques are used. The use of technical equipment such as abseiling devices, rope-shortening devices and energy absorbers require pre-cise quality and tolerances if you as a user want safety and functional properties throughout the service life of the product.And this does not come cheaply.

Rope end connections All our ropes are equipped with safety hooks and with integrated rope end con-nections.

PROFI This is the proven mature 30-year old clas-sic product among our ropes. Produced by a German rope factory to exact specifica-tions provided by BORNACK for precise tol-erances and quality. At the same time we always retain proven aspects – the FALLSTOP® ropes from BORNACK still have 4 strands instead of just 3.

PROFITEC technologyDue to their construction, high quality kernmantel ropes cannot be spliced.Therefore they have always been knotted, which is associated with the risk of strength losses and manipulation by unauthorised parties. For this case, BORNACK has devel-oped a puncture sewing procedure that allows extremely strong stitching:• High strength of over 39 kN (knotted approx. 29 kN).• High level of protection against damage to the seam (over 70 % of the thread lies hidden inside the rope).• No sources of error caused by wrong han-dling by the user.• The PROFITEC end connection is also pro-tected by a transparent protection cap.

PROFITEC The properties of kernmantel rope designs may vary: low-stretch static ropes through to high-energy dynamic ropes. We have selected a very high-performance kern-mantel rope for the FALLSTOP® SAFETY product range – the PROFITEC 12.0 mm.The mantel protects the load-bearing rope core and allows recognition of tolerance values of mechanical damage and facili-tates handling.

The rope end connections are still always equipped with a splice produced in crafts-manship quality. This task is assumed by a third generation rope-maker master craftsman at BORNACK.

Horizontal use of rope protectionIf possible, the attachment points for securing ropes or height securing devices should always lie above the user. This pre-vents longer fall paths and higher fall ener-gy from being exerted. Rope protection can therefore be preventive = precautionary. Ideally as a retention system (no free fall possible). This also solves the problem of rescuing a colleague who has fallen from the rope protection.

However, overhead attachment points are not always available. For example, when working on roofs etc., the attachment points are near the feet. This means: longer fall paths (2 – 3 m free fall), and deflection of the securing rope over an edge.

Approval according to EN 353-2 is inade-quate as this test is only vertical. In the case of short connecting ropes between the body harness and arrester device, only small fall paths of approx. 30 to 50 cm are tested; however, fall attenuation according to EN 355 is required. All FALLSTOP® prod-ucts from BORNACK have met these strict requirements for over 25 years. Today an addition test 'horizontal use' is being dis-cussed for the EN 353-2 standard.

The sharp edgeFalls over edges should be avoided. In extreme cases, the edge can be very sharp. This always poses a risk for the rope and danger in general. Only edge-tested secur-ing ropes should be used. Use edge protec-tion or rope protection.

All BORNACK ropes of the PROFITEC and PROFI series with the associated arrester devices and energy absorbers have passed the horizontal test and have been approved accordingly.

In a systematic series of trials involving 40 fall tests, none of the BORNACK products failed. These tests were carried out by the reputed neutral testing institute DMT (now DEKRA EXAM).

Explanation:A 'sharp edge' within the meaning of the standard draft and tests is a steel profile with an edge radius of R = 0.5 mm.

Retractable type fall arresters allow great freedom of movement and are therefore used as lanyards if movements need to be secured with as little limitation as possible. They may not be used over bulk goods or other media into which it is possible to sink!

Like seat belts in cars, the lanyard can be pulled out of the hous-ing and blocked if jerked (pull-out speed greater than approx. 1.5 m/s).

A spring keeps the lanyard taut. When retracted, the retractable type fall arrester automatically winds up the lanyard again to prevent slack. In the case of a fall, the device blocks and arrests the user. An integrated energy absorber system with a slip clutch limits the fall impact to less than 6.0 kN.

Use• Stationary maintenance work on road and rail vehicles: the

retractable type fall arrester remains permanently attached to a rail guide.

• Horizontal movements, e.g. transport of material on a flat roof or an unsecured platform.

Starting situation »Emergency«:

An unconscious person is hanging com-pletely passively in the arrester device of an vertical fall-arrest ladder. There is a seri-ous risk of an orthostatic shock that can lead to death very quickly.

As quickly as possible, the casualty • must be freed from his suspended posi-

tion• must be transported to a safe and easily

On platforms, roofs, lattice masts, cranes etc. – everywhere where rope protection is used and rescue operations cannot be car-ried out with technical equipment quickly.

The rescuer climbs upwards to the casualty with the rescue basket.

Lift the casualty using the lift function and relieve the vertical fall-arrest system so it can be disen-gaged.

Use The abseiling device SOLID S has an automatic centrifugal brake and is therefore ideally suited for abseiling over great heights. It does not need to be operated which is why it guarantees that an unconscious person can be lowered safely.

The ideal rescue device for construction sites and stationary installation on tower platforms etc. Can be used for self-abseiling or as a shuttle ser-vice for several persons one after another. Stationary ladders are installed for access to elevated workplaces, for instance to rooftops, silos, light masts, radio towers, but also on large machines such as shelf-operating systems or vehicles such as ships etc.

Other application examples, such as pylons have step irons on the corners. Access to workplaces with restricted depths such as shafts etc. are usually equipped with step irons or steps. If the climbing path is longer than 5 m in total, persons need to be secured.

Back cages on ladders are not considered effective fall protection. An unconscious person would fall unhindered. Rescuing a casualty by means of abseiling requires a great amount of effort and is difficult.

With few exceptions, prevention deliberations generally lead to the use of a fall arrester system.

Fall arrester systems are governed by the standard EN 353-1 and comprise a guide, which is perma-nently installed along the climbing path, and a detachable fall arrester to which the user is secured; this secures him as he ascends and descends, and arrests him in case he falls.

The guides may be made of cable wire or rails. These are materials that can be permanently mounted outdoors exposed to the elements.

Load-bearing guides made of rails are anchored onto the ladder at regular distances of approx. 1.3 m; their structural stability must have been statistically verified.

An ideal and inexpensive option is to equip lad-ders with integrated rail guides, like the RS ladder.

Cable wire rails only have one load transfer point on the upper cable attachment which greatly facilitates planning and assembly. They are highly suitable for retrofitting to ladders or step irons with a vertical-fall-arresting system.

When climbing or descending, the arresting device simply slides along the rope freely without the need for intervention; even across rope guides.

In the event of a fall, the eccentric of the safety catch clamps steplessly onto the rope and arrests the user; even under horizontal strain or if the user falls to the side.

The redundant safety catch prevents the arresting mechanism from blocking in the event that the user panics (grabbing the device) or scrap-ing (if holding onto the bracing rope).

Use The horizontal bracing rope AK-LEOS 01 allows inexpensive and fast prepara-tion of assembly sites for rope protection. The rope is simply tensioned between two adequately strong anchoring points.

Using the special manual tensioning device, the rope is adapted steplessly to each installation length and tensioned to the required level by means of a ratchet. It is not possible to reach a critical level of over-tension. The rope is prevented from returning and the tension is maintained even under load by means of a clamping cam.

Due to the energy absorption capacity of this special rope design in combina-tion with this tensioning device, no additional impact force absorption in the bracing rope is required.

Rescue chute PROMAN RR01 with horizontal jib

System for fast, safe rescue of incapacitated persons from spaces with vertical accesses without risking injury.

People and materials need to access the inside of upright tanks to carry out work such as repeated internal inspections, repairs, cleaning, assem-bly work, dismantling of parts. Therefore, access openings, so-called man-holes, are planned at the necessary points when tanks are designed. If a person in the tank becomes incapacitated due to an accident or a health problem, rescuing this person without suitable rescue equipment is extremely difficult and time-consuming due to the geometric circum-stances, and there is also a risk of injury.

Rescue operations using the rescue chute RR01 simplifies and accelerates the process significantly, allows the person to be rescued on their back and reduces the risk of injury considerably.

The rescue chute comprises a bent chute with a rope in the middle and a permanently attached anchor plate with two attachment vices for locking to the manhole flange. The chute that protrudes into the tank ensures that the casualty is pulled upwards with sufficient distance to the wall of the tank to prevent scraping. A clip attached to the rope of the rescue winch prevents further pulling until the head of the casualty reaches the chute allowing him to be turned onto his back. The casualty can then be pulled onto the rescue chute and is then moved ergonomically from a ver-tical into a horizontal position. He leaves the manhole head and shoulders first and can then be easily pulled out by the rescuers.

The helmet is one of the oldest pieces of protection known to man, dating back to the 3rd century BC. Even then, people tried to protect the sensitive head against attacks with weapons. Use The load pulley LH100 allows ergonomic and rational material transpor-tation: no second person required for transport tasks. The European standards are a basic requirement for free trade between Member States of the EU and for standardising health & safety regulations.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is split into three classes:• Class I No risk• Class II Risk to health• Class III Risk to life

Rope protection (PPE against falls) belongs to Class III.

The equipment is subject to type testing by a notified offices based on the EN standards. The manufacturer confirms the con-formity of the on-going production with the type test by attach-ing the CE label and the declaration of conformity.

The production of Class III PPE components is also subject to addi-tional production monitoring by a notified office and/or a moni-tored quality assurance system.

A height worker suspended in rope equipment in an exposed situ-ation at a great height needs to have absolute faith and trust in his own skills, in his ability to work at heights, but especially in his equipment. He needs to trust that this rope protection equipment was not produced to minimum standards as cheaply as possible, but that this equipment offers maximum safety with correspond-ing reserves, i.e. the strength and functional properties of the products, and also the experience and care exercised by the peo-ple who develop, design, test and manufacture the products.

Standards form a solid base acting as minimum requirements in terms of equipment performance and function. Standards, such as the ISO 9001, can 'control' the daily processes; what remains is the quality of the version and the creativity of the innovations as they are used by humans – people for people.

Made in GermanyThe Germans, and especially the Swabians, have a reputation for absolute precision and conscientiousness which is why many BORNACK products are “Made in Germany”. They are developed on site and produced at the company's own production facility. For customers at home and also abroad, this is a seal of approval that defines the quality of the BORNACK brand.

In all 5 stages, technical expertise and creativeness lead to innova-tive products! Innovation within the meaning of safety and dura-bility. BORNACK endeavours to keep all 5 stages in-house or at least to work with longstanding known cooperation partners.

Designed by BORNACKRight from the start, we produced products 'Designed by BORNACK' to satisfy our own standards. We always incorporated the input of know-how and experience from other application markets across the world. We still maintain cooperations with partners from abroad that resulted from this time many decades ago.

However, times have changed since the markets were opened to create a European market and as a result of the globalisation pro-cess. Companies have been taken over and BORNACK has lost them as a partner. Production capacities were transferred to “cheap labour” countries where quality cannot be controlled. Products need to satisfy international standards: uniform func-tions and sizes for everyone across the world? – that is not a phi-losophy to which BORNACK subscribes.

We want to maintain our standards for the German market and, to our great surprise, we have found that people in other coun-tries also trust the BORNACK products 'Made in Germany'. This vindicates our strategy to bring even more important production steps into our own production facility.
