LIVESTRONG® at the YMCALIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a twelve-week,small group program designed for adultcancer survivors. This program fulfills theimportant need of supporting the increasingnumber of cancer survivors who find them-selves in the transitional period betweencompleting their cancer treatment and theshift to feeling physically and emotionallystrong enough to attempt to return to theirnormal life or their “new normal.” Theprogram is conducted outside of medicalfacilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG atthe YMCA is about health, not disease.

Our goal is to help participants build musclemass and muscle strength, increase flexibilityand endurance and improve functional ability.Additional goals include reducing the severityof therapy side effects, preventing unwantedweight changes and improving energy levelsand self esteem. A final goal of the programis to assist participants in developing theirown physical fitness program so they cancontinue to practice a healthy lifestyle, notonly as part of their recovery, but as a wayof life. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants asupportive environment and a feeling ofcommunity with their fellow survivors,YMCA staff and members.

YMCA fitness instructors work with eachparticipant to fit the program to theirindividual needs. The instructors are trainedin the elements of cancer, post rehabexercise and supportive cancer care.Call Dan Braun for more information.920-236-3406 ext 311. or [email protected].

We believe that every child deserves the opportunity toexperience YMCA programs, regardless of financialdifficulties their family might be facing. Y programs suchas child care, camping, swim lessons, youth sports and teenleadership programs do more than teach skills - they instillconfidence, responsibility, and help young people to bestrong in spirit, mind and body. These experiences have astrong impact on kids, helping them grow into healthy, contributing adults.

With your help, no person will be denied the benefitsof a Y membership based on financial limitations.Through the YmCA Annual Campaign, people like youcome together to make the Oshkosh community

THE CONNORSSpecial Olympics USA Games

I now know what Missy Franklin’s mom must have felt like when herdaughter left for her Olympic debut in London. Erin flew for the firsttime ever on Friday, the 13th of June 2014, with 62 Team Wisconsinathletes to represent the great Badger State at the 2014 SpecialOlympics USA Games, held in New Jersey. After an inspiring openingceremony, my 14-year-old daughter, Erin Connors, made her Olympic

debut and took to the water at one of thefastest pools in the nation, the DeNunzio poolat Princeton University.

Beneath Erin’s ever-present smile is an incredibledrive to succeed. She and her teammates knewthey were swimming against the toughestathletes in the nation and all hoped to do theirbest. What a week it was! Erin and her seventeammates swam a total of 40 events duringthe week, setting 25 personal best records andwinning 32 awards with an impressive 26 ofthose awards being medals.

Erin set a personal best in her 50-yardbackstroke with a time of :49.78 winning thesilver and missing the gold by a fingertip (sevenhundredths of a second). The gold wasn’telusive, though. Showing real Wisconsin pride,Erin claimed the top spot on the podium, winning a gold in her 100-yard freestyle. Thatwas quite an achievement for any athlete, letalone one making her Olympic Games debut.

As part of the Team Wisconsin 4x50 FreestyleRelay team, Erin and her 3 teammates stoodon the podium for the bronze and establisheda team best record, before winning the silverin the 4x50 Medley Relay and setting anotherteam best record with an 8-secondimprovement.

This experience was amazing for Erin; she came away with increasedconfidence, independence, and maturity. She has bonded with hercoaches and has made lifelong friends of her teammates. She hasnever traveled independent of her family before nor has she seen thesights of the east coast. Thank you all for supporting Erin in thisadventure, it was an absolute success.
