Meet some of our choice student-athletes

Fall Sports IN FOCUS

A special supplement of the Davenport Times, Oct. 29, 2009

Produced by Mark Smith, Marcia Smith and Karen Robinette, with appreciation to the coaches and athletes from schools in our cover-age area.

Our fourth annual “Fall Sports in Focus” supplement affords us the opportunity to introduce our read-ers to the kids inside the uniforms.

The regular sports pages have only enough room for game sum-maries and statistics, along with photos, of each week’s schedule. To get a more personal look at the individuals involved, we need a publication such as this one.

Near the start of the season, we asked each of our coaches to select a few “choice” players. They didn’t all have to be seniors – and they didn’t all have to be superb ath-letes, for that matter.

We wanted the kids who show excellence and spirit, who make a coach’s life easier – kids who make a school and community proud.

We threw in a new twist for this year’s edition – we asked our schools’ athletic directors to choose one individual for each that would make for an interesting read, someone who was regarded as an inspirational influence on his/her teammates and fellow students.

We went to their schools and spent a little while interviewing them for the stories labeled “Zoom In” you’ll find as you start reading.

There’s only so much space available in this special section, so we realize that some kids who also deserve recognition weren’t able to be featured here.

We want to thank the players who filled out our questionnaire, the coaches who facilitated that and the photography side of this project – and the businesses, organiza-tions and individuals who made it possible by purchasing advertising space.

By MARK SMITHOf the Times

Ryan Zeller started out his sophomore year as a wide receiver and defensive back on the Gorilla football team. But within weeks, he had joined the cross country team as well – and experienced success right out of the gate by winning his first competi-tive race.

Most athletes concentrate on one sport per season, but Ryan has continued to compete in both while keeping up with his work in the classroom as well.

“He’s a very versatile athlete with natural ability,” cross country coach Tim Zeiler commented. “Doing two sports is demanding – there have been times when he played football and then the very next day was running cross country.”

This week, Ryan’s expected to run at regional XC Friday afternoon in the Spokane Valley, then get to Reardan in time to join the Gorillas for this year’s edition of the classic east county football rivalry.

“He’s a 110 percent all-out athlete,” Zeiler continued. “He deals with what’s at hand and will give it his all.”

Ryan has found that both fall sports complement one another.

Cross country builds up endurance and, Ryan says, “I can run faster with the football for a longer period of time be-cause of cross country.” Football coach Aaron Carr “is perfectly fine” about what others might find a divided loyalty, Ryan continued.

He got interested in cross country when he discovered how well he did at track last spring – making it to state – and people “thought I was a better run-ner than football player – and it began to jell in my mind.” Practice schedules kept him devoted to football early on, but he was able to achieve a balance in order to remain eligible for running events.

He enjoys the differences between the basic nature of the two sports – cross country being more individual, football

a team sport. The two coaches also have different styles – Carr more energetic and “the competitive type, pushing you, getting the adrenaline going,” while Zeiler is “more relaxed, calm, not jump-ing on you all the time.”

But he appreciates the combined impression both have left on him.

He’s been in a football jersey at Dav-enport for four years, beginning in the seventh grade.

This year, Carr’s second, Ryan says is “more fun at both practice and games. A bonding between the coaches and play-ers is developing.” He’d like to continue football through his high school years, but thinks he’s up to running college-level cross country after he graduates.

He also was part of last year’s state runner-up boys’ basketball team – but as a stat keeper while playing junior varsity – so he’s looking forward to playing var-sity perhaps in the upcoming season.

As he runs the cross country course he tends to look around to see who’s ahead and behind him, while breaking up the course in his mind, setting smaller goals along the way. “It’s not as difficult

as some think,” he says, “but it is a men-tal thing to deal with the pain in your legs and keep pushing yourself.”

Because of the individualized nature of the sport, a runner in essence becomes his own coach, building on the inspira-tion generated before the race by the “official” coach.

His most memorable moment thus far was beating Reardan’s Grant Schultz this season – and having to take first place in order to do it.

“Since he was in second behind me, I knew that in order to accomplish my goal of finishing ahead of Grant, I was going to have to finish first,” he recalled. “It took me several hours of sleep to re-cover from how drained I was after that. We shook hands afterward – Grant’s a pretty sportsmanlike guy.”

Ryan said he wants to keep his grades up to stay eligible for sports-related scholarships. He plans to become a line-man, following his father’s pace (Robert Zeller works for the Bonneville Power Administration based in Grand Coulee).

Since he enjoys the outdoors and activities that include hunting, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles – “the last two winters were delightful,” he quipped, “and I wouldn’t mind another like those this year” – he finds that work-ing as a lineman would be compatible with those hobbies.

“He’s a busy kid,” Coach Zeiler added, “and when kids are as busy as he is, he needs to stay true to himself and on top of his studies.”

It’s already apparent that Ryan isn’t running on empty and is well on his way to closing in on those goal lines.

Two-sport athlete stays true to self as he meets challengeMeet Ryan Zeller, Gorilla football and cross country

Meet C.J. Trego,Reardan football

By MARK SMITHOf the Times

At the beginning of his junior year, C.J. Trego decided the time had come for him to reverse course and take school seriously.

He’d already achieved a lifelong dream – to be on the Reardan Indians football team – but he determined that the accomplishment had its limitations.

“Reardan football had been my life since first grade,” the senior explained. “My buddy Chris Pence and I would go to the games and say ‘that’s going to be us someday.’”

They watched former coach Dan Graham in action – “we regarded him as a god, larger than life. You respected him because you were afraid of him,” he laughed, “but he was a good role model for us.”

That “someday” came – but it hasn’t been easy. CJ was a second string quarterback as a freshman – “and then I broke my leg, came back, tore my ACL, worked hard to come back, and tore my other ACL as a sophomore.”

Through the adversity, he made him-self available to “play wherever coach put me in to help out” – and this season, he’s “helping out” as a running back and defensive linebacker.

His No. 10 jersey signals a strong presence on the field. And this year, as coaches have moved him around for his own protection, he’s nursing a shoul-der rotator injury that he knows will eventually require surgery to fix – “but I’m going to tough it out through this season.”

As a freshman and sophomore, he ad-mits, “I didn’t do school seriously – just enough to be able to play football.”

He could be forgiven perhaps, consid-ering that for several years he’s basically raised himself and his younger brother (an eighth grader) while his mother sorted things out in her life.

He’s never met his father, now an animal sciences professor at a Colorado

college, but has talked with him several times on the phone.

“I’ve been on my own a lot,” he ex-plained, “and my mom understands I’ve kinda raised my little brother and credits me for helping her to get where she is now. My brother and I work together to keep stress off my mom. I felt we should support her as much as we could.”

Realizing, as he put it, that “I wouldn’t go anywhere in life on the path I was on,” he decided to pursue his studies with a new enthusiasm and raised his grade point average to a 3.95. “I was actually surprised at how easy it was to excel in class,” he recalled, “and I didn’t mind the new respect I was getting from my teachers, who I

C.J. (10) in action for Rear-dan ear-lier this season.

found were more than willing to help me do well once they knew I was serious about it. They all have been helpful in expanding my dreams.”

“He’s basically raised himself, and he very easily could have gone the wrong direc-tion,” says his coach, Eric Nikkola. “There were times he lived with other people and he’s kept away from temptations like drugs and such. He’s a senior that other students can look to since he’s gone through a lot of adver-sity already.”

The “C.J.” stands for “Colton Jae.” He explains: “Mom always liked C.J. as a name, but I don’t know how she came up with the full name. But her name begins with a C, mine does and my brother’s, too. I came up with a 3C brand for a tattoo and for our horses to register with

the state Agriculture Department at some point.”

C.J. says he’s kept to himself more, “cutting myself out of the high school gossip and drama so I could spend more time working in class.”

Science teacher Ryan Leonard took note of the difference between C.J.’s performance in freshman physical sci-ence and how he’s handling chemistry as a senior – “he thanked me for turning it around,” C.J. related. “I didn’t do it to get attention – and I don’t like being profiled; I try to break the mold people try to place me in.”

C.J. said he dreaded having another science course, “but it turns out that I’m really enjoying the challenge it brings. I like being tested and learning in class.”

He and his teammate Chris are looking into a fire science-technology program at a Texas school – “something beyond the Spokane area so I can experi-ence another place and all that I can.”

He credits FFA advisor and ag in-structor Rick Perleberg for being a posi-tive influence on his future plans. “He pushes me to try harder and accomplish more.”

And with his own life and example to back up his words, he’s conveying the same message to his younger brother. “I’ve talked with him about the impor-tance of trying hard, too.”

A l y x a n d r a “Aly” Peone, senior, setter, daughter o f Monica and Ti-ger Peone.

Other sports in which you compete and which is your favorite?

Basketball. I cannot pick a favorite, but I am a daddy’s girl! (Mom coaches volleyball, dad girls’ basketball).

What one goal /accomplishment did your team have this year?

Our main goal is state. We do have a very young team, although we do not use that as an excuse. We have all developed so much and are progressing great. I like looking to my girls all as upperclassmen and not just the grade they are in.

What one goal did you have for your-self? Describe your progress.

Make a great set, even on a not-so-good pass. My progress is in action; however as a senior, I still have plenty to work on.

If you weren’t playing your sport this fall, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t doing a sport, I would be working.

What are your plans after high school?

Become an accountant. I have college credits from my accounting tests, that will help me get my start in a two-year col-lege then transfer. I’m thinking strongly on North Idaho College.

LUKE KLEIN

REARDAN CHEERLEADERSContinued from page 10

Zoom In

Meet Luke Klein,Christian Heritage soccer

By MARK SMITHOf the Times

He may be quiet and seem reserved, but Luke Klein, a Christian Heritage junior, “bal-ances his responsibilities with maturity beyond his years,” according to CHS athletic director Karl Moldrem.

“He never will ask for recognition,” Moldrem continued. “He’s a humble and energetic servant, a honor student” who also serves as a school and church wor-ship leader, a regional 4-H leader and a recent applicant to serve on the Lincoln Hospital Foundation board.

And in the fall, he’s a pretty good soc-cer player, too.

Every week, Luke has been respon-sible for scoring goals and providing assistance to others’ goals as the Patriots have continued to build a strong pro-gram in the Mountain Christian League. They’ll play in the MCL tournament this weekend.

As good as he is on the field (he’s played soccer since sixth grade), he actu-ally prefers basketball as his “first love” in sports.

“God has blessed me with talents I can use, and leadership is a big one,” Luke said. “Some don’t use their talents, but I do. I like to get everyone involved and also be kind to those who don’t usually get that kind of treatment.”

But put a soccer ball in front of him, and by his own admission, “it’s no more Mr. Nice Guy. I get into position to score, put forward a smart attack with all my strength. There’s a thrill associated with playing, as opposed to watching from the sidelines. It’s like watching a roller coaster compared to being on it.”

To successfully compete, Luke said he’s worked on his skills, but there’s a point when “instinct has to take over.”

He pursues his academics and spiritual life with equal fervor. Bible instruction is his favorite class at CHS – “it’s like a chapel everyday” – and he also enjoys reading and reciting speeches in literature

Humble servant demonstrates maturity beyond his years

class. During his school years, he also has performed as part of the cast of the spring CHS productions that are build-ing a reputation for fine student theater in the region. “He’s a wonderfully gifted actor,” Moldrem added.

His speech and drama skills have been honed as a 4-H member in both the Country Kidos and Teen Time clubs, where impromptu and persuasive speeches, along with demonstrations, have been a part of his repertoire for several years.

It was probably a given that Luke and 4-H would be so vitally linked. His mother Jan is well-known in state 4-H circles (having recently been honored with a state award) and has been in charge of the Know Your Government and annual teen conferences.

Last summer, the two went to Wash-ington, D.C., to participate in “Citizen Washington Focus on D.C.,” learning what it means to be a good citizen. He saw the House of Representatives and the Senate in action and had opportunity to talk things over with Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

He’s also emerging from the shadow of older brother Caleb, a 2009 CHS graduate, who led the way in many school activities – “he taught me a lot,” Luke acknowledges with gratefulness.

Of his six brothers and sisters, Luke’s the next to youngest in a family that ranges from 13 to 27 years of age.

As for his theater skills, he says he “really had to work at becoming” his character in last year’s production

of “Beauty and the Beast,” playing a sidekick to one of the villains, a role that required him to be punched and tossed about the stage by his abusive leader. Each scene brought an additional coat of makeup to bring forward another black eye or other wounds on his face and body.

“To be better at what you don’t nor-mally do,” he says, “you have to act it twice as big.”

He’s not sure yet about what life will bring him following his high school graduation but he has developed two interests that he hopes will be part of the future – playing piano and enjoying being around younger kids.

And he is convinced God has a plan for his life and is even now preparing him for what’s to come.

Other sports in which you compete and which is your favorite?

Candace: I’ve played basketball since seventh grade. My four sisters have played volleyball, so I’ve grown up with it, playing since fifth grade. Volleyball is definitely my favorite.

Sunny: I play basketball, but I like volleyball better.

Joshua: Tennis (my favorite sport) and basket-ball.

Dale: I don’t compete in other organized sports, but I snowboard regularly during the winter.

What one goal /accomplishment did your team have this year?

Candace: To just work together and remember that our No. 1 is Jesus Christ, and to strive for that on and off the court. Also, just to get our team percentages high up there.

Sunny: That we should work as a “team.” Just like our motto says: “Together. Everyone. Achieves. More.” So far, we are keeping our goals good. We trust each other, have more communication and show good attitudes.

Joshua: The major goal our team had was to beat ICA, because they won the championship match last year.

Dale: Beat defending champions ICA.

What one goal did you have for yourself? De-scribe your any progress so far.

Candace: Just keep pushing myself and get better in every position. Reminding myself it’s my senior year, I have to go all out! My spike approaches have gotten very good; I’m pleased. Just keep pushing

myself!Sunny: I wanted to

pass and kill the ball better. Thanks to the coaches, my passes got much better after drills.

Hitting-wise, I think I got better after all those weight lifts and other stuff.

Joshua: Come out of the goalie position for a game and score. So far, I’ve come out three times and scored once.

Dale: To score a goal. I play defense, so I don’t get too many opportunities, but lately I have been able to get a few shots on goal per game.

If you weren’t playing your sport this fall, what would you be doing?

Candace: Focusing fully on school work. That’s my main goal. Let me tell you – fighting “senioritis” is REALLY hard!

Sunny: Just studying. I might have looked for part-time jobs, but mainly I would get ready for SAT and college.

Joshua: Playing tennis at Spokane Racquet Club.

Dale: Practicing guitar and with my band.

What are your plans after high school?Candace: Attend Spokane Falls Community Col-

lege and major in physical education, maybe someday be a personal trainer.

Sunny: I would like to go to the University of Michigan and study business. I really don’t have exact, detailed plans; just whatever God wants me to do.

Joshua: Play tennis for a two-year college, get my AA degree, transfer to a four-year college for my B.A. Next, go to the Army Medical College in Maryland to get my doctor’s degree and become a surgeon at whatever hospital needs me.

Dale: I’m not totally sure what my plans are. God has a plan for me which is better than anything I can come up with, so I’m gonna follow Him. I would really like to tour with my band, though.
